Severnaya

Surface 1 Installation, Severnaya, Siberian Plateau, 4 Years Ago

Severnaya Surface Installation 1 is the fourth level in the game where Bond must sneak into the Satellite Control Bunker. The guards patrolling either carry Sniper Rifles, Klobbs, or KF7s. The surroundings of Surface are pine trees and snowy grounds. The Surface is a wide open level that contains little huts, a satellite dish with inside features where an objective takes place, and trails with little hills along side of them. there is also an outpost area with two more huts, and it is fenced in. Down past that is another hut with a camera on it. If the camera sees you for a certain time, Arctic Commandos will appear, along side the Siberian Special Forces. The way to get out of the Surface is to shoot the locks on the ventilation tower, and drop down into the Satellite Control Bunker.

Background

Surface 1, Severnaya, Siberian Plateau.MI6 has had their eyes on this lonely, desolate area of northern Russia since before the fall of the Soviet Union. Communism is no more, a suspicious rise in military activity has been noticed in this territory, and rumors of Ourumov’s presence have MI6 interested enough to send their best agent to investigate. A spy satallite has detected increased levels of activity at an old observatory complex near Severnaya (62.08n, 102.58e) in Russia. Other sources have confirmed the shipment of a large amount of computer hardware to that location, and an influx of sdefeated personnel.

Objectives
  1. Power Down the Communication Dish (Agent)
  2. Obtain the Safe Key (Secret Agent)
  3. Steal the Building Plans (Secret Agent)
  4. Enter the Base via the Ventilation Shaft (Agent)
M Briefing

It might be a coincedence that there is a new head of the Soviet Space Weapons Division, your old friend General Ourumov, or it might not. Penetrate the base and find out what is going on. Building plans for the underground section would be ideal. They’re unlikely to be just lying around so look for a safe – there’s bound to be someone you can borrow a key from.

Q Branch

I looked over the recon photographs and I advise you to stay clear of the main bunker entrance by the helipad. However, there seems to be a ventilation tower nearby which would make an excellent spot for a covert entry. You ought to power down the the comms dish to, no point in letting them tell the whole of Russia that you dropped in.

Moneypenny

It’s cold in Siberia, James. Make sure you wrap up warm and take care to protect your extremities.

Surface 1, Severnaya, USSR - The Dam.Unlike the easy mission, fewer soldiers chase you, but they are better at aiming their weapons. You are in a snowy level. Firing a loud weapon will definitely attract some attention to yourself. Luckily, you are equipped with a Sniper Rifle as well as a Silenced PP7. So you can fire from afar at enemies and take them out with one shot to the head. There will most likely be several enemies tailing you or shooting at you in several areas. Stay alert, and remember that at a distance, the enemies have terrible aim.

Start by following the path forward. Pull out the unarmed, which is the butt of the sniper rifle. Sneak up on the enemy that is pacing away from you and smack him good. This is the ultimate stealth, and is harder to miss. There is a hill to the right, with a hut. Back away from the hill to the high ground and fire on the barrels with the Sniper Rifle to defeat the two guards.

Enter the house they were guarding. Pick up the grenade rounds in the green ammo cases. Climb up behind the house you are in, and then look to the closest house. Go up the house, then stand on the hill behind it. There should be a guard pacing a little ways away. Take him out, the move to the lone house that is a small distance away from you. Enter that house with the PP7 at the ready.

Shoot the enemy in the uniform, then quickly take out the other special forces member. Get the Hut Key and the ammunitions they drop. There is a grenade launcher laying on the crate. There is some extra ammo for it. I do not reccomend using it, as it attracts attention.

Run back from house to house to the hut with the barrels and the two guys that used to be outside it. Go to the hut opposite of it and open the door. The safe key is on the table in this room.

Exit the hut and follow the main path down the road defeating enemies that have the misfortune to come across you. As soon as you see a giant satellite building, leave the path and head towards it.

Enter the double doors to the right of the building. Go up the stairs and to the door at the end. Inside is a computer console. DO NOT DESTROY IT. Press B by the console to power down the communications dish. Do not destroy it either. Exit the area.

Go out to the back path (head left) and follow it until you see a fenced area. There are two huts here. Take the first one (on the left at the fence entrance) and enter. This hut has the safe. Open it up and seize the building plans.

Go back out and follow the path back to the satellite bunker. Take the other path to the right and head left off the path after you travel it for 10-15 seconds. There should be a circular establishment with a ladder. Climb this and start shooting the four locks holding the grate up.

This part will sometimes have enemies approach and climb up. So if you have very little health, stay on the side away from the area you came from, so you can see enemies approach. Ambush them as the climb the ladder. After the locks have been destroyed, jump down through the hole to enter the Bunker.

Secret and 00 Agent

Anyway, run out the door of the dish and take a left. You should find a little out of the way passage. Follow it into the woods.

Y should see some cabins inside a fence on your left. Run inside and open the door to the first cabin.

This cabin must belong to Ouromov...who else would wear such an ugly hat?! Oh look, there is a safe in here! Open it up and take the Bunker plans (Objective c: Completed), then exit back the way you came.

There is not anything of importance elsewhere along the path, just a security camera and some exploding toys.

There should be some guys waiting for you by the dish, so nail 'em with your Soviet. Keep following the left wall until you reach the ventilation shaft, shoot off the locks, jump in, and you are done. (Objective d: Completed)

Out in the middle of nowhere, a disproportionate amount of military personnel has set up shop but have moved nowhere. Obviously, something is being hidden here. Start off on foot into the tundra. Wander around to the left until you run into the first wooden hut. Inside there will be two soldiers to defeat and a safe key. Grab the key and venture out again.

Prepare for another trek into the wild. Russian soldiers suited for the cold will come at you, but they are few and far between, so do not worry about them unless they are up in your face. Make your way to the enormous satellite dish on the other side of the stage. The main door is unlocked, so walk in and go up the stairs. You can go onto the roof and get rid of the snipers if you like, but then go into the next room and face the computer. This machine maintains communication between this base and the headquarters elsewhere. It would be of great convenience to you if you shut it down before you infiltrate the bunker. Shut it down with B and leave promptly.

Before you make your way into the bunker for the next part of the mission, you have to find the blueprints so you know where you are going. The blueprints are in a safe in another hut off in the distance. Two sets of twin huts can be found on an alcove on the southwest side of the map. The first building that you see a camera and an alarm, so take those out from far away before advancing. Shoot up any guards there, and enter the first hut. The blueprints will be yours for the taking inside the obvious, gray safe. Grab the papers and rush out.

To finish this part of the mission, you need to drop into the hidden bunker from an alternate entrance. Avoid the front door helipad and locate the ventilation tower nearby. Shoot off the locks and the grate will drop. Follow it into the bunker exhaust shaft.

Trivia
  • Surface 1 was originally supposed to have a white sky, but was later changed to a unique pink and blue sky.
  • Destroying the console instead of using it will fail the mission plus sound the alarm (wrecking it while shut down will actually cause the dish to return on from reserve power). It also frequently cause serious glitches in the texture mapping of enemies that spawn afterwards, including guards with completely black or metallic faces and misapplied face textures which repeat multiple times. Sometimes the small ammo/weapon picture in the bottom-right corner may be corrupted as well (said glitch does not happen in original N64 hardware).
  • The scrapped motorbike model from Runway is visible in a small hut in one corner of the map, as a destructible figurine. If it is shot (just like with same type figurine-like car), it will violently explode, destroying a lot of things near it. It takes 1 or 2 shots to provoke this destruction on each figurine.
  • Destroying the crate in the room with the safe will lead to a shower of about a dozen books.
  • The map in the safe is an accurate map of Bunker 2. It can be destroyed with explosives or gunfire, which will fail the mission.
  • Severnaya simply means "North" in Russian.
  • If Bond tries to open the door to bunker, a message saying "Access Denied!" will be shown and the alarm will be sounded. Following this, reinforcements will be provoked to run to Bond's location, similar to destroying the dish console.

Bunker 1, Severnaya

The Bunker, in its first iteration, is a small underground base in the middle of Siberia, on the Severnaya plateau. At this point in time, it is under construction, and only houses a small amount of computer hardware in preparation for the Goldeneye program. Bond must lead a programmer to activate him a computer, so that he can use his Datathief device on it (on 00 Agent).

Objectives
  1. Disrupt All Surveillance Equipment (Secret Agent)
  2. Copy the GoldenEye Key, Leave the Original (Agent)
  3. Get Personnel to Activate the Computer (00 Agent)
    • Bond: Take me to the mainframe terminal!
    • [The programmer and Bond go to the terminal.]
    • Bond: Disable the security!
    • Programmer: should not take long. Hmmh, the root password has been changed. 'K' 'N' 'O' 'C' 'K' 'E' 'R' 'S' - [return]
    • [An alarm is triggered.]
    • Programmer: Oops!
    • Finished download.
  4. Download Data from the Computer (00 Agent)
  5. Photograph the Main Video Screen (Agent)
M Briefing

007, I want you to infiltrate this base and find out what the devil's going on there. The satellite photographs reveal that there has been recent underground excavation. we would like to know the exact nature and planned extent of the workings. By the way, this is a covert operation. You may have to neutralize the security, but try not to be too obvious about it.

Q Branch

you will be doing some computer hacking on this mission, 007. I know you would rather be cracking open a bottle of bubbly than cracking passwords, so I took the liberty of putting together a little gadget which will do the hard work for you. If you attach the data thief to their mainframe it should override any computer security measures and download the information we require.

Points of Interest

Where you dropped in is in the very center of an underground stronghold still under construction. There are armed guards everywhere, but more importantly there are cameras. If any surveillance camera spots you, an infinite amount of soldiers will come in until you are eliminated. Start by entering the room right in front of you. Pick off the two guards quickly or they alert the whole Internet that you are here. Destroy the alarm.

From this room, aim through the glass and shoot the camera outside. Step out and take any guards that are there. Head to the left and watch the corners. Peek around the left corner. Head down the corridor to the left and defeat anyone who comes to meet you. There will be a door on your left. Peer through the glass and blow up the camera in there. Keep moving, and around the next corner will be a dead end and another camera. Slowly edge around the corner and shoot it from a distance.

This half of the bunker should be clear. Go back up the hallway to the small set of stairs that lead down. This leads into the main control room of the bunker, which coincidentally is filled with more soldiers. This part might be difficult, but try to take them all out as best you can. Note that there is a camera on the far side from the entrance, up in the alcove. Take it out to end your problems here.

Select your camera on your items menu and snap a shot of the big, complex screen at the front. Next, pick up the shiny, colorful disc on the table. Select the Key Analyzer, press Z to analyze, then toss the key away. Find a specific NPC. His name is Boris Grishenko and he is not invincible. Clear the bunker of all soldiers before aiming your weapon at him. Short dialogue will pass and he will lead you to the mainframe towers in another room. As soon as the data starts downloading, special ops guys will pop in and start firing, so make sure to be ready for their insanity while your download processes. As soon as that is done, head out to the glass doors in the control room, shooting up soldiers along the way. Open the doors and walk up the main hallway and back up to the surface.

Multiplayer

Facility is one of the five solo stages included in Multiplayer. It is a fan favorite and is often considered one of GoldenEye's best multiplayer maps. The multiplayer version of Facility only has the first part of it up until the second checkpoint, at which it prevents moving to it with a locked door and removes most of the objects from the stage to make it flow better. Like all solo stages featured in multiplayer the mission correlating with the one needed to unlock must be completed before it is available for play.

Facility was one of the three "Classic" maps included in Perfect Dark, where it was retextured, slightly modified, and renamed Felicity. It also made it into Perfect Dark's sequel, Perfect Dark Zero, where it resembled a partially destroyed version of GoldenEye 007's Facility. Another, heavily modified version of it, stripped of doors, with several new areas and connections between old areas, is featured in the Wii version of the Quantum of Solace game. In addition to these official reappearances, it has also often recreated by fans for a number of other classic first person shooters, including Doom, Quake, Half-Life and Counter-Strike. In Goldeneye Source, Facility has 3 maps, including one that is a near-perfect copy of the original's solo stage.

Notes

The first Bunker is a major stealth mission. Use your Silenced PP7 all through the mission, until it is time to activate the terminal. Whenever possible, use "run and hide" tactics to avoid letting loose the squad of soldiers in the big room. If an alarm ever goes off (not including after you spring the datathief) restart.

Bunker 1, Severnaya.Open the door in front of you and quickly defeat both guards. If you are slow, they will hit sound the alarm. Pick up their stuff, KF7 Soviets, and use the PP7 again to knock out the red alarm on the wall.

Turn around and head to the room from where you started. there is another door there, and behind it is a generator and a surveillance camera, quickly open the door and blast it to pieces (you can nail it with one shot if you are good). No alarm means you have succeeded.

Go back to the second room you were in. you will see a guard passing. Reload the PP7 and take him out with one shot to the head. he is got a security keycard. If he does not, another guard in the near vicinity will. Knock out the camera outside and to the right.

With the room you just departed behind you, turn right. you will reach a room that is also part cave. Three men will guard it. defeat them and eliminate up the camera. Use your PP7 for quite death and few enemies, or your KF7 for more enemies, plus better enemies as well, like the Klobb and DD44s.

On your left is a hallway that leads to a staircase. That staircase leads to the main room with Boris, the key you need to copy, and a map of the world, of which you will need to take a photograph. But you cannot go in yet, there are simply too many armed men in it.

Leave that cave when the coast is clear.Close to you is a gray door that leads to another gray door. Go inside the first door, but not the second. Look through the window. There are three men, and a mainframe. do not use any grenades, and make sure not to blow up the mainframe. In the difficult level you will have to bring Boris up here and turn on the computer. Two men are to your right and one to your left. Open the door and spray them with bullets. Collect their weapons and head to the main room. At this point, you should have eliminated everyone in the hallways and other rooms, except for the main one.

Round the corner to your left and slowly use your silenced PP7. A few guards should be in various places around the room. One's directly to your left, another straight across from you — it is a good time to switch to the Phantom. To your right is a staircase, so run up it and defeat off the three enemies in it. The room you are in is a split floor and across from it is a similar one across the large main floor. Two men are in it. Run over there and blow out the camera. That should complete objective A. This should all be done quickly, so that Boris does not run away. Initiate conversation with him for the hard level of difficulty. he will lead you to the mainframe room. While you are in the main room, you will see a giant world map. While you are following the ever-so-slow Boris, switch to your camera and take a shot of the map, completing objective C. Let him type in "knockers," and then switch to your data thief. Press Z to enact it, and wait until it is completed. Boris will have turned on the alarm, so prepare to face dudes with DD44s.

Run back to the computer in the main room where you found Boris. Pick up the key and switch to your key analyzer. Copy the key by pressing the Z button and your primary objectives are complete. There is one door to the right of the world map. Enter this door which leads to a staircase where at least two guards are standing at the top. Use your C button to aim high.

Glitches/Oddities
  • You can defeat the programmer once you have him activate the computer without failing the mission. In Agent and Secret Agent difficulties, he is not required to complete the mission so he can be defeated freely.
  • The Commandant uniquely has the PP7 Special Issue pistol, despite the Russian/Soviet army as standard having the Dostovei pistols.
