Introduction

If you thought you had your hands full with previous GTA offerings, whoa nelly! Welcome to San Andreas, possibly the largest console game ever made. Veterans of the series will marvel at the fact that San Andreas feels about five times larger than Vice City, with enough core missons to keep you busy for dozens of hours. Newcomers might feel the enormity of the game collapsing in on them.

This massive game spans the entire state of San Andreas, with visits to three major cities patterned on real-life counterparts. There is Los Santos (based on Los Angeles), a gritty blur of smog and violence; San Fierro (based on San Francisco), and Las Venturas (based on Las Vegas), a midnight wonderland crawling with money, sex and corruption.

Three cities would have been more than enough to keep gamers busy for months, but Rockstar went and did it. adding huge chunks of countryside that link all the areas together. Contained within this massive landscape is a helluva lot of game. There are dozens of missions, hundreds of secrets, tons of vehicles and weapons, and all kinds of new stuff to do.

Stuff like recruiting gang members, swimming, building property, riding bikes, eating, working out, getting a haircut, attracting the ladies and much more.

Basics

What is there to do?

There are a series of missions dedicated to forwarding the expanisve story of San Andreas — the story of you, Carl Johnson. After being away from the hood for five years after the death of your family members, you have returned. The problems that plagued you are still there. and have gotten worse. it is up to you to set things right, gain respect, and deliver the hood from evil.

The story missions can be found in MISSIONS. They are listed under the city (or countryside) they take place in and the person who doles them out. Sometimes, mission-givers disappear for awhile, and reappear when the story moves along. Pay attention where you get the mission, and try to note its name to easily find the section of walkthrough you are looking for. Not all missions are needed to complete the story; however, some are needed to forward the narrative.

As you progress through the game, you drive and steal countless numbers of Vehicles. As you become more of a big-shot and start earning money, you want to purchase some real estate in various places around the map. This gives you more home bases and save locations. Check out the Buildings/Stores section for the low-down on property and other stuff to buy.

When you get in certain vehicles, you are able to push a button and trigger special missions. Visit the Vehicle Missions section to get the scoop on these.

In addition to missions, there is tons of stuff to find, scattered throughout the three cities and the countryside. There are 100 gang signs that you need to Tag over. There are 50 Snapshots to take, 70 Unique Jumps to make, 50 Oysters to find, and 50 Horseshoes to locate.

What is in a Name?

it is called Grand Theft Auto for a reason and that is because your main means of transport is to jack someone else's car and take it on a joyride of your own. In order to jack a car, you simply need to make it stop (most motorists will stop if you stand in front of the car, unless they are going too fast to stop), then press the hi-jack button while near the car in order to assume ownership by force. For more information on the kinds of rides you can steal, visit the Vehicles section.

Once you jack a car, get out of the area quickly. People do not like getting their cars stolen, and some come after you and try to take back what is theirs. Some of them use a shovel to do this. you also want to avoid jacking a car when a cop is around. If a police officer sees you steal one, your wanted level automatically goes to one star, and the po-po is on your tail. Which leads us to.

Wanted Level

what is a wanted level? it is a tangible representation of just how much trouble you are in as a criminal at the given moment. Here are things you can do to raise your wanted level:

  • Jacking cars: Sure, it is the bread and butter of the game, but if a cop sees you do it, he comes after you.
  • Running pedestrians over: As in life, this draws attention, especially from the boys in blue.
  • Shooting people: Pretty obvious. Shoot all you want when the cops are not around, but when Johnny Law is in sight, lay off the trigger. If you shoot a cop, then you are in a world of hurt.
  • Damaging property: This one is tricky. Cops will not nail you if are knocking down light poles, but they might take notice if you are wrecking cars left and right especially cop cars.

The more things you do, the worse it gets. Your Wanted Level is represented by stars. If you have one star, it is pretty easy to maneuver out of danger. If you have over one star, the police chase you more fiercely. Cars will chase you, and get more aggressive. Anything above that is big trouble. SWAT members will be called in, roadblocks formed, etc. If you want to have some fun, see how high you can get your warning level and then see how long you can stay alive/evade the police.

If the cops do catch you, they bust you provided they do not run you over or shoot you first. you wake up after spending a night in prison. Your wallet is a lot lighter and you are stripped of any weapons you may have accrued, so be careful when messing with 5. There is nothing more depressing than losing a nice Shotgun just because some cop decided to collar you.

Getting Out of Trouble

If your wanted level is a mere one star, all you have to do is stay out of the policeman's eyesight for a bit, and the wanted level goes away. Pursuit in motor vehicles is weak at best. so just find a quiet neighborhood to drive around in, or run to a secluded spot and just wait it out.

If the wanted level is higher, you Are needing to get to a Pay N' Spray (indicated by a green spray can icon on the map). It costs $100 a pop, which is hardly anything when you consider you stay out of jail for a night. After you get your car sprayed, you have to be nice for awhile. While your stars are flashing, you have to stay completely out of trouble, or your warning level vaults back up to its orginal glory.

Another way to whittle away at your wanted level is to find Bribe icons and walk (or drive) over them. Doing this lowers your wanted level by one star, which could be the difference between freedom and the slammer. A bribe icon is shown on the picture above. The final way to drop a wanted level is to finish a mission. Even if you are at six stars, the second you finish, the threat goes away.

Driving Tips
  • it is more important to drive under control than it is to drive fast. you will avoid getting spun around and banged up, which becomes very crucial in certain missions.
  • When you are going fast, avoid sudden movements. These cause your car to spin out, flip, roll, etc.
  • If your car is banged up and smoking, get another one. If the mission requires you to stay in the same car... hurry up and get it to a Pay N' Spray! If a car starts flaming, get out fast, then run... it is about to blow. You do not survive if you are anywhere in the explosion halo.
  • Use the lock-on button on turns. it is there for a reason. you will be able to keep some of your speed by sliding through a turn, rather than braking sharply and then turning.
  • Know the limitations of your vehicle. do not take a slow or beat-up car to a street race, for instance, and do not take a wimpy compact to a job where you know you are going to get shot at.
  • Be alert. This sounds stupid, but it is not. There is so much going on in the city that it is sometimes difficult to see where everything is coming from. Focus on driving when you are driving and you avoid a lot of heartache.
Mixin' It Up

In addition to driving around and causing a ruckus, another major element in GTA is combat. This game improves on everything from Vice City. The targeting is much better, and combat just feels a lot more fluid.

Whether hand-to-hand or with weapons, the concept is pretty much the same. Lock on to your target, then punch or shoot. If you are shooting a weapon, you can cycle through targets as you continue to hold the lock. In this way, you can quickly move through targets and mow down a series of enemies in a hurry.

You can also target manually. Hold down the lock-on button and use the Right Analog Stick to move the manual aiming cursor around. By doing this, you can pinpoint body parts, or shoot at specific parts of a vehicle (like the gas tank). When holding down the lock-on, you can also strafe by moving the left analog stick left and right. Use this to stay on the move and dodge bullets as you dish some of your own.

Combat Tips
  • Always crouch when firing weapons. This improves your accuracy and decreases the enemy's chances of hitting you.
  • Speaking to a similar point, always fire from a position of cover. Crouch down next to a low wall or car and use it to protect yourself as you shoot at the opposition.
  • Use the right weapon for the job. do not bring a shotgun to the party when you need to blast across the room. A Tec-9 is a pretty good all-around bet.
  • Roll to avoid fire. Whenever crouched, pressing right or left on the left analog will make you roll, and this can be used to dodge bullets.
  • Use the manual camera to look around corners and down hallways before going willy-nilly into the fray. Doing this kind of cheaty recon will allow you to stay alive longer.
  • Use your mini-map to discover where potential targets may be coming from. Enemies can approach from any direction, so keep your head on a swivel, and do not be surprised!
  • do not reload in the open. Always seek cover to put in a new clip.
  • When you can, roll with numbers. Bringing buddies along to a fight will make it much easier.
  • If you can, kill people with your car before you get out and use a gun.
  • Always wear a vest. This will essentially give you two health bars to work with, and make you a much bigger asset in any firefight.
Hurting and Healing

Throughout your little journey through the mean streets of San Andreas, you will draw your fair share of violence, justified or not. Keep track of your health by checking out the red bar on the right side of the screen. If this completely empties, you will be "wasted" and will be deposited at the nearest hospital. If you have money, $100 of it will be taken each time you go there, so try not to go there. If you have less than $100, or are flat broke, the hospital will still heal you up, but you will be penniless.

The hospital is one way to heal, but you will want to do something about your condition before things get that bad. In San Andreas there are several options to heal:

  • Stop by a save house and save. You will come out refreshed!
  • Eat a meal at one of the restaurants on the map. Eating a meal will not recover full health, so you may need to eat a couple if you are really banged up.
  • Use a vending machine. For a mere $1, you will gain a health boost.
  • Pick up a "heart" icon. These are normally found within missions, but they boost your health considerably, so use them if you find them.

you will also want to be on the lookout for body armor (it looks like a blue, spinning vest) to use before going into battle. This will essentially give you an extra full health bar to work with. The vest strength will be represented by a white bar near your health. When the body armor drops to zero, your health will be chipped away, unless you find another vest.

There is a vest right near your house. Go out behind the house and into the aqueduct to the left. Go down the sloped wall of the aqueduct and head left. On an incline underneath the bridge, you find a handy vest.

Skills to Make the Deals

In San Andreas, your character possesses some RPG-esque attributes which can be grown throughout the course of the game to make certain things easier. While playing, you can quickly pull up a status display to see how you are progressing in those categories. Most of the skills are improved by simple repetition. It stands to reason that the more you shoot weapons, the higher your Weapons Skill rises. Here are the attributes you can affect and how to do so:

  • Respect: is not respect what we are all after? Your character is no different. Respect will be earned by killing rival gang members and completing missions. You can also gain some measure of respect by dressing appropriately and taking care of yourself.
  • Weapon Skill: This skill measures how proficient you are with weapons. As you use specific weapons more, your skill will grow accordingly. You can check out the progress you have made with a specific weapon by looking at the Stats: Weapons scroll. you will begin at Poor with each gun, and progress from Gangster to Hitman. As your skills improve, you will gain the ability to hold multiple weapons and more. The Weapon Skill you see on the display is your cumulative attribute.
  • Stamina: The more Stamina you have, the longer you will be able to sprint and hold your breath while swimming. To improve this skill, get on the treadmill or stationary bike in a Gym, run around the environment and scale a lot of hills. In addition to increasing Stamina, you will increase your Max Health, which is very helpful. Every chance you get early on, get some reps in on the bike.
  • Muscle: The more muscle you put on, the stronger you will be in hand-to-hand combat, and the more attractive you will be. You can get seriously yolked by spending some time in the Gym. Go to the Dumbells and Bench to put on lots of muscle mass quickly.
  • Fat: Having more Fat will slow you down, and hurt your Stamina. To get Fat, go to a restaurant and pig out on fatty foods. To burn it, do activities that promote Stamina--like running, swimming and riding the stationary bike. Or just do not eat.
  • Sex Appeal: This stat is a witches' brew of many factors. How does your body look? If you are ripped, your appeal will go up. If you wear the right kind of clothes and haircut and have the right tattoos, it can also improve. The number of missions you complete (ie, the more power you amass) is another factor. The higher your Sex Appeal, the more the ladies will dig you, and that is a good thing.
Eating Right

In order to keep your body fueled up right, you need to eat once in awhile. It never gets to an annoying level, but you have to nourish yourself to keep going.

Head to a restaurant and order up some vittles. To do so, stand on the red marker near the counter. The employee will show you a platter of goodness. Cycle through choices by pressing LEFT and RIGHT on the D-Pad. Certain meals have more fat content than others. For instance, the salad meal in a fast food place does not add to your waistline, but a double pizza meal does in a hurry.

If you eat too often, your character gets fat. For a quick demonstration of this, save your game and head over to a fast food joint with a wad of money. Eat a bunch of $10 meals in a row and watch the pounds pile up. You can always revert to your previous save if you do not like your portly self.

Conversely, if you do not eat enough, your body goes gaunt. You slow down because of fatigue, so watch out for that. Either way you go — skinny or fat — you draw comments if your weight is off-kilter. Just listen up to hear passersby comment on your appearance. it is just as fun as it is in real life.

Getting Buff

Another new thing you can do in San Andreas is to build up your character's muscles. This is represented by a red dumbbell on the map. Cruise over there and go inside. Use the weight machines here to build up muscle and work toward your "gangsta physique."

Select a machine and follow the onscreen directions to build your mass. Most of the equipment requires you to tap a single button or between alternating buttons. it is a good idea to put your controller flat and use index fingers to do this quickly. After several exercises, you will be unable to improve your physique for the day.

There are various pieces of equipment in the gym, and here is what they do for you:

  • Treadmill: Improves Stamina, burns Fat
  • Bench: Increases Muscle
  • Dumbells: Increases Muscle
  • Stationary Bike: Improves Stamina, burns Fat

Once you get strong enough in the gym, you are prompted to learn some new fighting moves. Go talk to the trainer near the boxing ring and you get a crack at the fighter inside. Lock on to him and use melee moves to beat him silly. do not relent... just keep on punching until he drops for good. When he does, you are granted new moves for your arsenal. Here is what you get:

  • Running Attack: Whilst running, lock on to a target with then press the use item button.
  • Ground Attack: Lock on to a downed opponent then press the use item button.
  • Combo Attack: Lock on to a target then press the use item button repeatedly.

As you move into new cities, you will have even more opportunities to grow your skills by visiting those Gyms.

Looking Sharp (you have Got the Look)

There are several ways to change up your appearance that do not involve how much you work out or how much you eat. The beginning of the game does a good job of walking you through these things. Just play Sweet's early missions and he will make you go to the Barber and Clothing Store (Binco's) to get a feel for those activities.

Going to the barber changes your haircut. Plunk down the money, get your do, and walk out of the shop a new man. The kind of haircut you get affects how other characters treat you. you get respect from the homies if you get corn rows, for instance. However, if you roll into the hood with a Jheri Curl, your buddies rip on you. Show that same cut to the ladies, and they let their soul glow. You can get fancy and change your haircut before a date, and that is just what we recommend, as long as you can afford it.

You can also buy new threads at a number of clothing stores in various locations. Stores are represented by a shirt icon on the map. To buy clothes, head inside the store and go back to the fitting room. Here, you are given a list of different elements to your wardrobe. Select one to view the wares, try them on, and grab the gear you want. The last thing you buy is what you wear out of the store. In order to change, you need to go back to the wardrobe in your house (the upper floor in CJ's home). Early in the game, you want to wear something green... as these are the colors of your Grove Street Family gang.

The final piece of the vanity puzzle is the tattoo parlor. Go inside to ink yourself up. Tattoos range in price and size, and you can choose to put them almost anywhere. Note, though, that some tats will be obscured by clothing, should you choose to wear it. If you have a nice big back tat, consider going shirtless. Passersby will also comment on your tattoos, so choose well. it is a good idea to get a Grove Street tat to impress your homies.

Romance. San Andreas Style

So you are hot. now what? Once you meet Denise in the Tenpenny "Burning Desire" mission, you have a special lady to take care of. Her house appears on the map as a heart, and you can go over there at any time and walk to the red marker to take her out. When you get to her place, a number of icons appear, showing fast food, diner, restaurants, and bars. You get tips onscreen as to the area she might like to eat in, so take her to someplace nice in that region. On the way, she is likely to want to do some drive-bys, so just roll with it.

When you arrive at the place you want to take her to, get out of the car. Before you go in, you may be prompted to kiss her. Go ahead and take the opportunity. It may help your progress with your lady. If you take your girl to a spot she likes (in her neighborhood, usually), she views you favorably. If she does not like the place you go, your progress takes a hit, and she asks to be driven home.

Pay attention to your girl, or she stops liking you. If she calls you on the phone and tells you that you have been ignoring her, that is your cue to get over there and take her on a date. If you do not bother to follow up on a phone call, consider that date a disaster. Missing dates is a sure way to fall out of favor with your honey.

As you move deeper into the game, you gain other girlfriends. Progress with each can be monitored at the Stats: Achievements screen.

Two-Person Hi-jinks

you notice that the first time you go to Denise's house, there is an unfamiliar icon on her front porch. This is the two-player mission icon. Plug in a separate Dual Shock, get a buddy, and raise twice the amount of hell in San Andreas.

Burglaries

Once you complete Ryder's Home Invasion mission, you are able to burglarize several houses scattered around the map. You must be driving the same kind of black truck used in this particular mission, but the burglaries work roughly the same. Look for places that are lit up at night. If a yellow marker appears near the door, sneak inside, remain steathly (using crouch is the best for this), and watch the noise meter. Take goods out to the truck until the house is cleaned out, and put them inside. When the truck is full, drive it to the lockup.

Gang Warfare

Once you do the Sweet: Doberman mission, you have the ability to start your own gang wars. To do it, go into any area on the map marked something other than green (the Grove Street colors) and start shooting the gangsters there. This provokes a gang war, and rival gang members start coming out of the woodwork. Every gang war has three waves of attackers, and you are told you survived the wave once it is complete. After each wave, be sure to pick up any weapons and money the rival gangs drop.

Once you survive three waves, you control the territory. It is now yours on the map, and appears green. Your own gang members are seen in the area, but it does not remain yours forever. Rival gangs constantly try to take your turf over, and when they do, it flashes red and an icon will appears. Controlling turf also leads to money and respect. The cash appears in Grove Street, so head back there to collect.

it is always best to roll with a bunch of your own guys when trying to take over territory, so begin in an area that you control, target your own guys, and rally them to your cause by pressing UP on the D-Pad. Once you have a crew, get into a vehicle and roll off to the hood you want to conquer. The more respect you earn, the more homies you will be able to recruit to your cause.

Weapons/Tools

Skill Weapons

This set of weapons factor into your overall Weapons Skill score, and each category is also tracked on the Stats: Weapons screen. As your proficiency in each increases, you start gaining accuracy and the ability to use the weapons in new and exciting ways.

  • AK47
The signature chatter of the AK spells doom and defeat for any enemy stupid enough to walk into your sights. Brandishing an AK gives you an immediate edge in battle, so seek it out early and often.
  • Combat Shotgun
Oh hell yeah. This puppy has serious stopping power--and rapid fire to boot. Not to be messed with, it is one of the best weapons in the game.
  • Desert Eagle
A bit more powerful handgun, this is the one from Snatch . Pick it up and give it a tug... it is got a satisfying pop. Definitely a better gun than the regular Pistol.
  • M4
Another great machine gun, this one is crucial for group situations when you need to switch targets quickly.
  • Mini SMG
These things are great all-purpose weapons, simply because they chew through so many bullets so quickly. Take these into any gang war and you will not be disappointed.
  • Pistol
The standard pistol. Squeeze once to let off a round, or hold the trigger to hear the pop-pop-pop. This is a decent weapon, but if you can get your hands on something a little more auto, by all means, do it.
  • Sawn-Off Shotgun
A little more compact and a little more menacing than the regular shotgun, this weapon blows its targets into bloody mist. An Ammu-Nation exclusive, you cannot find this one dropped by anyone in the game.
  • Shotgun
As always, the Shotgun is one of the most enticing weapons in the game, primarily because it does so very much damage at close range.
  • Silenced Pistol
Like the above pistol, but this one can be used in stealth-style missions to kill victims without making a huge racket. If you do not want someone in the next room to hear fire and come running, this is the weapon for you.
  • Tec 9
A nice machine pistol, the Tec 9 rips through a lot of meat in a hurry. Equip it in large group situations where you can cycle through and kill targets rapidly.
Melee Weapons

Use these to get up close and personal. Bludgeon, slice and otherwise mash your target into a bloody pulp.

  • Bat
A trusty Louisville Slugger is a pretty decent weapon if you can get in close. Lock on and bam! Instant De Niro.
  • Billy Club
A cop's weapon of choice, the billy club is easy to swing, and does lots of damage in close. Too bad gaining one usually comes with a built-in warning level.
  • Brass Knuckles
Strap some of these to your meathooks to make your already deadly right cross that much meaner.
  • Chainsaw
A devastating weapon, the Chainsaw allows you to go all Leatherface on your foes.
  • Dildo
Yeah... you read that right. You can wield a prosthetic johnson as a deadly weapon. Anyone who has seen Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels will relate.
  • Katana
This samurai sword is another fun in-close weapon. Slash and slice your way to bloody revenge.
  • Knife
Particularly handy up close when your victim does not know you are approach... stealth style!
  • Pool Cue
A bar fight just wouldn't be the same without a pool cue broken over someone's back. Pretend it is Road House and go nuts.
  • Shovel
Before you dig someone's grave, make them grave-worthy with this weapon.
Other Weapons

These specialty weapons pack a lot of firepower.

  • Bazooka
Like the Rocket Launcher, this puppy fires a missile. Lock on to your target and blast for some serious pyrotechnics.
  • Flamethrower
Chestnuts roasting by the open fire... The Flamethrower continues to be a great weapon, as it is in most games. The best part about it is that it keeps hurting a target even after you are done shooting.
  • Rocket Launcher
As you would expect, this sucker can take down practically anything, including aircraft.
  • Sniper Rifle
Target and zoom for some nice long range shooting. When you absolutely do not want to get dirty, this is the rifle for you.
Explosives

These explosive weapons are all pretty handy for taking out groups and causing general mayhem.

  • Grenades
The longer you hold the throw button, the further the grenades will go. Take into account the grenade's trajectory when placing your throw. Make sure you do not toss a grenade and run into that area, because that is plain silly.
  • Molotov Cocktail
Like the Flame Thrower, the added benefit of the Molotov is that it inflicts fire damage on its target.
  • Plastic Explosive
Place a plastic explosive by pressing the fire button. Detonate by targeting and pressing the fire button again. BOOM!
Very useful Tools
  • Camera
Also available from your bedroom at the Johnson House, the Camera is what you will need in order to shoot and collect Snapshots throughout the game.
  • Fire Extinguisher
Aim at the base of the fire to put it out when this tool is equipped.
  • Flowers
A tool of love, the flowers will not work well on a drive-by, but they can zero in on your lover's heart.
  • Spray Can
you will need this to tag over the gang signs you find scattered throughout San Andreas. There is always one to be found in your upstairs bedroom in the Johnson House in your hood.

Vehicles

  • Admiral
It does not have a ton of speed, but makes up for that with good handling. A fairly good car for any job.
  • Alpha
A 2-door car that is a cross between a street racer and a luxury vehicle. It boosts Sex Appeal out the buttocks, so get prepared for some sweet lovin' when you take your date back to her place. It also handles like a dream, to boot.
  • Ambulance
Found at any hospital, or roaming wild on the street, the Ambulance is a vehicle with its own set of missions. Know what that means? that is right. Visit the Vehicle Missions section of this guide for more info.
  • Baggage
A baggage cart from the airport! Oh joy! This thing controls very silly-like and is fairly useless, but man, who does not want to drive around Downtown in one of these babies?
  • Bandito
Words cannot describe how cool the Bandito is. Like a water skipper skates across H2O, the Bandito will skate across the rockiest of terrain.
  • Banshee
A super fast, super sporty vehicle that has a stripe down the center. You can even change the color of the stripe at a Pay 'N Spray!
  • Barracks
You can find the Barracks inside of the Naval Base in San Fierro. it is also wise to use this to pull off those nasty vigilante missions, as you can ram the hell out of your enemies using this one.
  • BF Injection
This little dune buggy has great suspension, great handling and is tons of fun to drive, on-road or off.
  • Bike
A standard bike, nothing too exciting…except perhaps the banana seat. Fancy!
  • Blade
This lowrider is a great car. it is got a lot of balls, and avoids fishtailing pretty well for such a big car. A good choice for any lowrider street race you might partake in.
  • Blista Compact
The affordable "soccer mom" street racer is loose in control, making those sliding turns oh-so easier. Just do not hit that handbrake at top speeds!
  • BMX
San Andreas marks the first time in the GTA series that characters are allowed to get on bikes, and this is the first kind you ride. Not much in the speed department, but it is maneuverable and can go places cars cannot.
  • Bobcat
This pickup is just what you would expect with a name like Bobcat--feisty, rather quick and not all that heavy for a truck.
  • Boxville
The perfectly boxed cargo truck! Get in a black one of these at night to perform Burglar missions.
  • Broadway
One could say that this is the pimpinest ride in the game. Press R3 in this car to do the pimp missions!
  • Bravura
A sporty sedan, the Bravura has good handling and cornering ability. Acceleration is fairly average, but gets the job done.
  • Buccaneer
A very stylish lowrider with an attitude. The sleek rear to the car caps off the pimp look with ease. The baby handles very well, to boot, with tight grip and flexy speed.
  • Buffalo
A sweet-driving muscle car and Catalina's ride of choice, get your hands on one of these whenever possible.
  • Bullet
Often confused with the Banshee due to the trademark stripe down the center of the vehicles, they both control very similar. The only way to tell them apart is the slight difference of the body build. Frequently found in Las Venturas.
  • Cabbie
A form of taxi, this one is rather larger and ungainly but still capable of Vehicle Missions. Visit that section of the guide for more info.
  • Cadrona
The Cadrona is another pretty reliable vehicle. it is not going to turn any heads, but its speed is decent, and handling is better than average.
  • Camper
A retro hippie experience, maaan. Mixing the 60s with the 90s to create a complete camper for those uphill, soul soothing karma cleansing vacations. Looking for one to export? Look atop of Mt. Chiliad!
  • Cement Truck
Need to run over a bunch of people, then bury them in solid concrete? here is the ride for you. The Cement Truck is an absolute monster of a truck. It takes awhile to get it going, but when it is, it is nearly unstoppable. Maximum carnage!
  • Cheetah
The Cheetah is the ultimate street racer, packing a punch with the sleek look and design that is recognizable.
  • Clover
More often than not, you will find this beater covered in primer and driven by a resident of one of the "outlying" towns. It has loosey-goosey handling, but decent acceleration. Still, it is far from an ideal ride.
  • Club
This boxy little number has a super-revving engine but not much pop. do not look to this car to do anything fancy.
  • Combine Harvester
When you need to turn bodies into body parts... reach for the Combine. Look for it at any farm.
  • Comet
Quite a sweet little ride, the Comet has plenty of get up and go, and is one of the most stylish vehicles in the game.
  • Dodo
The Dodo is the classic plane from the Grand Theft Auto series that used to be known as a "piece of crap." Now, it is a decent small plane, if you cannot find anything else. Watch out! Her tilt is heavy.
  • Dozer
Another great vehicle made by Dude, the Dozer is a compact ride with pretty decent handling. Whip some donuts with it and see what we mean!
  • Dumper
you have got a nice Dumper! This truck is tough and big. Pick one up and go on a car-crunching rampage.
  • Dune
A big dump-like truck that controls like a super speed racer. Very tight control and even tighter looks.
  • Elegant'
San Andreas takes on a Beamer, the Elegant' has nice pop and great handling.
  • Elegy
Tight handling and excellent speed combine in the Elegy to make it one of the nicer driving cars in the game. Whether you are racing in the Badlands to cruising on the San Fierro coastline, the Elegy is the perfect fit.
  • Emperor
It takes a while for the Emperor to get rolling, but once it does, it can be an unstoppable force. As the name suggests, this one is in charge once it gets a head of steam.
  • FCR-900
The perfect city living motorcycle. Completely rare and completely slick, the FRC-900 is like a pimped out PCJ600.
  • Feltzer
The Feltzer is incredibly slick, and hard to miss on the road. This puppy is the boxy convertible
  • Firetruck
Climb inside and start the Vehicle Mission of putting out fires around town.
  • Flash
This little firecracker has everything you want from a compact--serious speed, manueverability and style. Well, maybe not style.
  • Forklift
If you need boxes moved around, reach for the Forklift.
  • Fortune
It looks like a sports car, but it is a little slower on the acceleration than one might expect. Still, once it gets cooking, it is got a nice top speed.
  • Freeway
The ultimate biker's bike, this one has tons of power and ape-hangers to boot.
  • Glendale
The Glendale has very nice control, and a nice look, although the vehicle itself is fairly average. it is still a nice town car.
  • Hermes
This old-timey ride has good horsepower and drives pretty well. what is more, it is one of the sturdier cars you will find in the city.
  • Hot Dog
This vehicle has the added benefit of containing its own dedicated employee.
  • HPV1000
A police motorcycle, this one is functional and fast, and one of the sturdier bikes around. Know that if you jack it, though, your wanted rating will go up by one.
  • Hustler
Classic deuce coupe style, half the calories.
  • Hydra
You will acquire this during a mission further in the game. This thing is heavy machinery, packed with a homing missile launcher and nitro boosters in the back.
  • Infernus
This bad baby is one helluva street racer, and is one of the original "street expert" vehicles in the series. Just look at those cat-like headlights!
  • Intruder
This boxy sedan is fairly unremarkable. it is good, but not great... but will do the trick for simple jobs.
  • Jester
Sleek and elegant, the Jester is a speedy addition to the casuals library. it is not as fast as an Infernus, or as rare as a Cheetah, but it gets the job done. Plus, look how pretty that coat is!
  • Jetpack
Complete the "Green Goo" mission to acquire this at your Airport safe house in the Desert. This bad baby is one of the best traveling devices in the game, as you can reach items like Horseshoes a lot faster and easier — it is a requirement for some of them.
  • Journey
This RV is quite stylish. It has absolutely no acceleration, and it quite top-heavy (do not corner hard, or you will tip).
  • Kart
    It is a go-kart. It drives like a go-kart.
  • Landstalker
This SUV is, as you would expect, pretty burly. It looks and handles like a Jeep, and is pretty rugged. Not the fastest vehicle in the game, but it can take a serious licking.
  • Leviathan
The most common amongst helicopters, you can find the Leviathan at practically every airport. Everything about it is completely average.
  • Linerunner
This is basically the cab portion of a semi, and as you would expect it is tough as hell. Go into town with this puppy, and it will feel like Maximum Overdrive in no time.
  • Majestic
And truly majestic it looks. For a beater, this one ain't bad. Good acceleration, good cornering.
  • Merit
Remember when everyone was going off about cab-forward design? Voila... here you have the Merit. Named like the brand of cigarettes, this one is ugly, but can be smokin' on the straightaway.
  • Mesa
Looks like a Jeep, drives like a Jeep. This is a good ride, whether in the city or off-road.
  • Monster
A gigantic monster truck that crushes the competition. You can get this by beating the first arena mission, or by dropping off the first five vehicles in the Export business.
  • Moonbeam
A cute family van, the Moonbeam has terrible acceleration and a propensity to tip over when cornering
  • Mountain Bike
Looking for the ultimate in off-road cycling? Then look no further than the Mountain Bike! Excellent grip and control will allow you to do as you please down Mt. Chiliad!
  • Mower
You cannot do much with this except mow.
  • Mr. Whoopee
Do yourself a favor and look at the top of this ice cream van.
  • Mule
A big, clunky hauling truck. Awkward to steer, awkward to control, but a sex machine if we ever saw one.
  • Nebula
There seem to be an endless supply of this type of middling sedan in the game. This one, at least, has a snappy name.
  • Newsvan
The newsvan is really like any other van--topheavy but decent--except that it has a radar dish on the roof.
  • NRG-500
Found at the Docks, near the Import/Export, and used for the NRG-500 Challenge. If you want to talk about fast, look no further.
  • Oceanic
A traditional surf car, this one can be found near beaches. It drives a lot like the Hermes.
  • Packer
The name of this one comes from the fact that it can pack in a ton of cars on its back. The Packer is slow and hard to steer on busy streets, but man, is it fun to drive up and jump off of using a motorcycle!
  • Patriot
Found only in military bases, such as Area 69 and the Naval Base in San Fierro. you will have to take a risk in nabbing one of these babies.
  • PCJ600
This little crotch rocket is a burner. Open it up on the straightaways and see what it can do. do not corner too hard when going too fast, though, or you will bite it.
  • Perennial
One of the worst cars in the game, this beater is rather slow, has no pick-up and is devoid of handling. Only use it if your other option is hoofing it.
  • Picador
Essentially an El Camino, the Picador has decent muscle and pretty good control. Throw a rug in the back and take your special lady up to the point, and you have got a recipe for love.
  • Premier
The Premier has a grill that is not as bold as the Elegant. The steering is very nice with decent, tight turns that can be glided into, but do not expect a speed demon out of it. Regardless, this thing is perfect for drive-bys.
  • Quad
Riding the Quad is a nifty experience. It is the ultimate offroad vehicle: fast, maneuverable, and all-terrain.
  • Rancher
Much like a Jeep Cherokee, this truck is very durable and has decent speed. Love the two-tone.
  • Ranger
In terms of SUVs to steal, there are easier ones to go after... But none look quite this cool. This cop truck is, as you would expect, quite rugged. it is able to go offroad easily and even boasts Vigilante missions.
  • Regina
The Regina is a higher profile and more suitable station wagon. While not really luxury, it sets off a nice tone compared to some of the crap out there, but it still handles like a station wagon. Bummer.
  • Remington
The Remington is flat-out awesome. Like a steel-plated couch on wheels, it has unexpected power and speed, rides low to the ground and can take a beating. it is only knock is that it tends to slide and spin out at top speeds.
  • Roadtrain
This bad-ass semi cab is about the wickedest truck ever. Check out that front grill! If you absolutely, positively need to plow through a bunch of raw metal, this is the vehicle for the job.
  • Romero
it is a hearse, so that is cool right there. it is also named after one of horror's best directors, so that is even cooler. The car itself is sturdy and handles well, but it is not going to outrun anyone.
  • Rumpo
This is a pretty low-end van. it will take more of a beating than a standard car, but it ain't gonna impress the ladies.
  • Rustler
Located at the Airport in the desert. The Rustler is the perfect "learning to fly" plane, which is why it is used in Flight School.
  • Sabre
The Sabre is a steady vehicle that is about as common as the Stallion, if you are in the right neighborhood. The Sabre is a longwise vehicle, so naturally is controls very smooth and the handling is air tight.
  • Sadler
It is quite sturdy, but it is a little slower and less powerful than it should be.
  • Sanchez
The ultimate off-road accessory, the Sanchez is the perfect bike for the rough-and-tumble backcountry of San Andreas. In addition to its signature engine noise, it is got good pick-up, great shocks, and the ability to pull off some of the coolest jumps in the game.
  • Savanna
Obtained in the vehicle theft missions, this is the ultimate convertible street racer. The control is very loose, so watch out on the tight turns.
  • Securicar
The ultimate is handling money! Money for nothing and checks for free! The thing takes a beating, but it is still not bulletproof. it is not so secure after all, is it?
  • Sentinel
Decent speed and great handling make this a good city car.
  • Shamal
The perfectly average plane. Tilts at a moderate pace.
  • Slamvan
This is one sweet Lowrider. It will be hanging around the Strip in Las Venturas.
  • Solair
Another station wagon, the Solair has decent handling, but lacks pickup. Not a bad ride, but not a stellar one, either.
  • Squalo
This little diddy is what defines a racing boat. It can travel at high speeds, although the ripples throughout the water will hamper the tight controls and overall performance.
  • Stafford
The Stafford is one nice vehicle. It is a timeless classic town car that looks so gangsta that it could be a mob car. The grill sticks out as if to say "Fuggitabowdit" a trillion times over.
  • Stallion
Basically a Mustang rip-off, the Stallion performs very well. It has got a kick-ass engine and can reach some horrifying speeds, and it handles well, too. Also comes in a convertible.
  • Stratum
For a station wagon, this car is pretty bad-ass. it is got decent handling and speed, although acceleration is not all that impressive. Not the best car for the criminal life, but not the worst.
  • Stretch
Limos are not the most practical rides available in San Andreas, but they certainly are stylish. Still, cornering can be a problem, and so can maneuevering down some of the narrow alleys and such.
  • Sultan
Ever wanted a luxury 4-door town car that is mixed with a street racing lady killer? Look no further than the Sultan.
  • Sunrise
Yet another decent sedan-style car, the Sunrise is nice on the straightaway, and has good maneuverability around turns.
  • Super GT
This high-octane sports car tears up the highways and byways. Getting a Bronze medal on all driving school tests will park this car outside the driving school in San Fierro.
  • Sweeper
it is not going to wow the ladies, or impress your homies.
  • Tahoma
Pretty sturdy with decent power, the Tahoma is a car that can take a pretty good knocking around before it is out of commission.
  • Tampa
If it looks like a junky, compact Blade, it is likely a Tampa. With a roof. This thing has decent control.
  • Tanker
Another semi cab, this one hauls explosive materials. Like all semis, it is tough and big and ready to dish out some punishment.
  • Taxi
The Taxi is the standard cab in the game. Basically a yellow sedan, it has decent acceleration and durability, plus you have the option of taking part in specific missions when driving it. Visit the Vehicle Missions section of this guide for more info.
  • Towtruck
A decent truck in its own right, the tow truck is sturdy and has pretty good speed for this type of vehicle.
  • Tractor
This is not gonna get you anywhere fast, and you will not look cool riding around on it. Still, how cool is it that it is in the game?
  • Tug
The Tug is a small vehicle that controls like a mixture of a Baggage and a Forklift. One thing you shouldn't expect to do in this bad boy is go very fast.
  • Turismo
The Turismo is the ideal street racer. It even has the engine in the back! Talk about retro Hot Wheels action! Super speed, super grip, super duper. Or uber duber, take your pick.
  • Uranus
The Uranus is a fast, lethal vehicle that can be obtained during the vehicle theft missions. Excellent control on this one.
  • Utility Van
Your typical work truck with ladder equipped and all!
  • Vincent
A great four-door, this car is perfect for speeding into and out of drive-by situations.
  • Vortex
This can go on land and off, making it the raddest ride in the game.
  • Yosemite
The Yosemite is a larger truck-type vehicle, able to take (and dish out) some serious punishment. This is a good, beefy truck to take into any hairy situation, provided you do not need max speed.
  • Wayfarer
The perfect highway bike, the Wayfarer comes eqipped with saddlebags and denim shirt/beer belly attitude. Like all bikes, it handles well, although it is not the fastest cycle on the road.
  • Walton
This utlity truck is not all that useful. It is slow and handles sluggishly. The propane tanks in bank are pretty stylish, though.
  • Washington
A decent luxury-style automobile that looks like a secret service agent's car.
  • Willard
No, it os not named after that rat movie, or the meterologist. It is, however, a fairly average car.
  • Windsor
A slick ride that is sure to get you noticed, the Windsor is a lady magnet. Pick one up today!
  • ZR-350
Another sure panty-dropper, this is a fast and exciting sports car that should accompany you on all of your dates.

Buildings/Stores

Safe Houses

Safe Houses exist everywhere on the map, and are indicated by green houses on the map before they are purchased. Once you throw down some loot for these places, the icon will switch to a disc on the map and you will now be able to access these structures to save your game. Having a diverse array of safe houses is key if you want to save time in the game. And since saving your game often is a very, very good idea, having a nice group of safe houses throughout the map is also a very, very good idea.

In addition to saving, each of the safe houses contains a wardrobe which allows you to change into clothes you have bought or acquired throughout the course of your time in the game.

Asset Properties

By completing missions and challenges, you acquire certain asset properties. These places serve some kind of public need, and eventually earn money for you. To collect it, go to the $ sign in front of the place and collect your cash. Asset properties are as follows:

  • CJ's House, Los Santos ($ Variable): The money generated depends on how much gang territory you control. The money symbol will appear after completing Sweet's Doberman mission.
  • Roboi's Foot Mart, Los Santos ($2000): Complete the Courier missions in Commerce, Los Santos.
  • RS Haul, Countryside ($2000): Do all Trucking missions in Flint County.
  • Hippy Shopper, San Fierro ($2000): Complete the Courier missions in Queens, San Fierro.
  • Wang Cars, San Fierro ($8000): Buy the business and complete the Car Thief missions in Doherty, San Fierro.
  • Vank Hoff Park Hotel, San Fierro ($2000): Complete the Valet vehicle missions to make this one yours. It can be found in Financial, SF.
  • Zero RC, San Fierro ($5000): Buy the business and complete the Zero missions in Garcia, San Fierro.
  • Verdant Meadows, Desert ($10,000): Buy the business and complete the Airstrip missions in the desert.
  • Hunter Quarry, Desert ($2000): Complete the Quarry missions in Bone County.
  • Burger Shot, Las Venturas ($2000): Complete the Courier missions in Redsands East, Las Venturas.
Stores/Services

There are several stores that will allow you to change your look and buy goods, and they're scattered all over the map. Here are the types of things offered:

  • Barber: The barber shop is represented by a pair of scissors on the map. Head there to change your look (which in turn tweaks your Sex Appeal and Respect ratings).
  • Clothing Stores: Be it Binco's or Zip, a clothing store is represented by a shirt on the map. Head inside to secure some new threads. Keep your eyes peeled for new shops when you head to a new town, or return to an old one (wink). Stores have differing inventory, so check them all to get a wide array of threads.
  • Gyms: There is one in each city, and their services are free. Go inside to gain muscle. Once you are buff enough, talk to the trainers inside to gain new and fancier fighting moves. Visit the Basics section of this guide for more info.
  • Pay N' Spray: This is a business that fits a specific purpose — evading the authorities. It is represented on the map by a green nozzle icon. Drive into one, pay $100 and emerge with a new paint job and immunity from the Wanted Level you have accrued.
  • Weapons Stores: These are represented by a gun icon on the map. Go inside to grab weapons and body armor, and participate in the shooting challenges (in the back of some Ammu-Nations) to gain weapon skill.
Restaurants/Bars

There are several reputable establishments scattered across the map... and a bunch of fast food places as well. here is what you can expect from each:

  • Bars/Clubs: These only show up on the map when you have a lady in tow, but most of these places are open all the time. Select bars allow you to play pool and arcade games. Clubs allow you to dance, provided you finished OG Loc's "Life's a Beach" mission.
  • Burger Shot: Burger shot offers up just what you would expect at value prices. Head there to heal and to maintain your energy level.
  • Cluckin' Bell: This high-fat chicken joint is not hard on the pocketbook, but it is on the figure. Most fast food places contain a Fire Extinguisher in the kitchen, if you need one.
  • Well-Stacked Pizza: Pizza, pizza and more pizza. Get plump and healthy at the same time.
