Introduction

Donkey Kong is back, this time in the largest adventure ever seen on the Nintendo 64. Along with DK, you will join three other Kongs on a huge quest to restore DK's famous banana hort. Diddy and Tiny return from previous adventures, while Lanky and the super cool Chunky make their first appearances. Along the way you will familiar faces such as Rambi, Enguarde, Cranky, Funky, and even the ghost of Wrinkly Kong.

Basics

After viewing the rap, start your new game and watch the opening cut scene. It seems that K. Rool has arrived next to your island and is trying to blow it up with his laser. Unfortunately for him the laser malfunctions and is now stranded next to DK Isle. While the kremlings are doing maintenance on the laser, the hero (Donkey Kong), sets out on his journey to save his four other kongs and to take down K. Rool.

Your adventure starts inside the heart of DK Isle. While training in your house, Squawks the parrot flies in unexpectedly and tells Donkey Kong about what has happened. Not only has K. Rool attempted to destroy the island but he has also stolen all of your bananas! Walk outside to view the area of your home. It’s quite beautiful with the waterfall gliding down. Jump down and head on over to Cranky’s laboratory. From a distance it will be the head of Cranky with an arrow pointing to it. When you near it the cabin will spin into existence. Inside, Cranky will tell you that you are too lazy to do anything right now and he reveals four barrels that you should use to train in. Head back outside and follow the signs to the south to find the four barrels.

You can do each barrel in any order. In the front-left barrel is the underwater challenge. Simply press Z to swim under and press A to swim. Collect the coin at the bottom to complete the challenge. In the front-right barrel is the vine jumping challenge. Simply jump onto the tree and climb to the top. Jump onto the swinging vine and let go when the vine nears the end of its arc. Swing to the coin to complete the challenge. The back right barrel is the barrel throwing challenge. Pick up a barrel by pressing B. Throw it by pressing B again. Do this to all of the barrels to complete the challenge. The back-left and final barrel is the orange throwing challenge. Simply run over all of the oranges and throw them by holding Z and pressing the right C button. After you complete these four challenges, head back to Cranky.

Cranky will give you the Simian Slam potion. With this move you can stomp harshly on the ground by jumping and pressing Z. Head back out and run to your tree house. Examine the signs near you to find “Way Out”. This will point you in the direction to a cave. (This is almost directly across from Cranky.) At the end of the cave is a switch with Donkey Kongs face. Perform the Simian Slam to open the gate. Head on through into DK Isle.

Shacks

There are four different types of shacks in the game, but not all of them appear in every level. They are:

Cranky - Cranky makes potions for the Kongs that give them special abilities.

Funky - Funky is the source of weapons for the Kongs.

Candy - Candy provides musical instruments.

Snide - Snide collects blueprints from each Kong, and in exchange gives them a golden banana.

Of course, the potions and weapons are not free. To get them, simply collect the coins that are scattered around the levels. It is a good idea to find each hut as early as possible whenever you start a new level. You never know when a new move will be offered.

To complete a level 100% with each character you must do the following:

  1. 1. Collect 75 small bananas for a medallion.
  2. 2. Find a blueprint, and return it to Snide for a golden banana.
  3. 3. Collect four other bananas for a total of 5 each level.
Fairies

These are scattered all over the place. Whenever you hear one giggling, look around and you will probably find it. By taking pictures of them, secrets can be unlocked. These are described in the Secrets section at the end of this guide.

Gold Crowns

These are obtained by completing the battle arena levels. There is one per stage.

Bonus Barrels

These lead to a bonus round that will reward you a golden banana for completing it.

Banana Objectives

Each monkey needs to collect five bananas in each level, and five in the central hub. In the regular levels, turning a blueprint into Snide always collects the fifth banana. Blueprints are found on enemies with their hair the same color as that character’s small bananas, coins, etc.

Freeing The Kongs

Donkey Kong. You start off the game with only Donkey Kong at your disposal. In order to use the other Kongs, you must first locate them, and then perform some sort of small task that will both free them from their prison as well as reward you a golden banana. In case you are having problems locating and freeing one of the characters, we have put together this quick list of pointers.

Diddy
Level: Jungle Japes

Diddy Kong.Diddy is found in the first level, Jungle Japes. To find him, climb up the cliff side vine, then swing across the vines to the cannon. Rocket up to find Diddy. After you talk with him, three coconut switches will appear. The left and right ones are easy to shoot, but the middle one is a little trickier. You need to stand on either ledge with the swinging vines, look down, and shoot. Once all three are shot, you will free Diddy.

Tiny
Level: Angry Aztec

Tiny Kong. Both Tiny and Lanky are in the Angry Aztec level. You will need to use both DK and Diddy to free both. For Tiny, use Diddy to enter the first temple. Stomp the Diddy switch and then climb up the platforms. Once at the top, look across and shoot the peanut switch. That will create a new platform that you will cross to a music pad. Use the pad to melt the ice down below and open your way to Tiny. Swim through the tunnels until you come to the room with Tiny in it. Dash the blocks in the correct order to spell out K-O-N-G.

Lanky
Level: Angry Aztec

Lanky Kong. To free Lanky, you need to first free the llama as DK. Then, go to the llama temple, and shoot the switch to enter. Find the music pad inside, and use it to have the llama come and turn to lava into water. Swim through the water to the room where Lanky is held, then shoot the switch to free him.

Chunky
Level: Frantic Factory

Chunky Kong. The final Kong, Chunky, is held in the Frantic Factory level. You will need to use Lanky to free him. From the entrance, go through the left hall and down the long pole. Follow the halls through one room, then exit into another hallway. This will lead to the room where Chunky is held in a large cage near the ceiling (there is a stack of boxes at one side of the room, which is the one main landmark to know you are in the right place). Use Lanky to climb up the pipe in the corner and stomp on the Lanky switch to free Chunky.

  • After you climb up the cable near the waterwheel house, stomp the switch on the roof to gain access to the winch room. Shoot the "ON" switch then dash at the up arrow to reveal a cage with a banana. Across the moat is a music pad that will release the banana.
  • On one of the barns, there is a Diddy pad that you can use to get into a small door. Once inside, play your guitar to call a bird with a flashlight. Use that light to walk along the planks to the banana.
  • Inside the big tree (Lanky will open the way) is a guitar pad. By playing it you will wake up an owl, fly through the rings and then do the bonus barrel.
  • Use your jet pack to get to the top of the giant mushroom for a bonus barrel.
  • Inside the giant mushroom, climb to the lower of the two vine platforms where the red Krusha is.
Bonus Games

1. Teetering Turtle Trouble - Keep the turtles spinning by shooting the snakes. Last for 45 seconds.

2. Busy Barrel Barrage - Shoot all the guys coming at you, and survive for 45 seconds. Do not just frantically shoot everywhere, shoot at the baddies.

Tiny
  • Just like DK, smash the switch in the mushroom, and the banana will be revealed. It is in a bonus barrel that you will need to climb to.
  • Go to the large tree area and walk behind the giant stump. Shrink, then use the music pad to call your bird friend. Drop down into the hole and defeat all the klaptraps inside to get a banana, and a magic bean.
  • Take the magic bean to the area near Funky’s to get another banana.
  • Find a giant spider by shrinking the barn near the #1 teleporter. You need to do this at night, so during the day have Chunky smash through the wall and break the boxes inside that are blocking the small hole for Tiny. First defeat the small spiders, then shoot the large one in the eyes three times for the banana.
  • The purple Krusha is on a deck of the third level of the giant mushroom.
Bonus Game

Speedy Swing Sortie - Climb up into the trees and swing through the vines, grabbing all the coins.

Lanky
  • The switch on top of the mushroom opens two doors for a short period of time. In one, it is very easy to get the banana. All you have to do is bounce off the mushrooms to reach it.
  • In the other room, use the picture of the Kongs that is on the wall and stomp the color-coded mushrooms in that order.
  • In the barn where Diddy pulled up the cage, there is a small doorway that Lanky can enter. Inside you need to stomp the switch, and then shoot down all the bats.
  • The fourth banana can only be received after going to the next level (Crystal Caves), and getting a new potion from Cranky. Once you do, wake up the rabbit by using the music pad, and beat him in a race twice.
  • Lanky’s Blueprint Krushea is under the giant tree (in the small tunnel).
Bonus Game

Krazy Kong Klamor - Hit 5 bananas in a minute, but they move fast, and the lights go FAST.

Chunky
  • The first banana is actually pretty easy to get. There is a well near the clock that if you stomp the grate, you will be thrown into a new mine cart bonus level. Once again, collect 50 coins for your banana.
  • Go to the barn where DK did the level puzzle, and enter once again by breaking down the large door. Play your little triangle (which will then turn on the machine), then place three barrels onto the belt to get the banana.
  • On the top floor of the mushroom, there is a door with a Chunky switch in front of it. Stomp the switch, then solve the puzzle inside by shooting the squares until an Chunky is formed.
  • For the final banana, goto the area near Funky's and use the Cranky barrel to get all buff. Squash the killer tomatos then pick up the worm's home and carry it to the patch of dirt with an apple on it (its near the clock).
  • At night, near the middle interior of the giant mushroom, swing on the vines to reach a outside deck where the green Krusha is.
Bonus Game

Mine Cart Race - 50 coins.

Crystal Caves

Donkey
  • There is a DK pad near Cranky's that will take you to a barrel blast level that ends with a bonus barrel.
  • The next banana is both tricky and frustrating to get. You will first need to get Diddy to fly through the DK star above the igloo. Then, you need to play your bongos to enter it. Inside, prepare to pull your hair out. There is a rotating ice maze with a banana inside. The trick is, even touching the maze walls once will take off an entire melon of life. What you need to do, is make as much progress as possible when the maze is moving away from you, and continue walking when it is moving toward you.
  • Near Candy's are two cabins. One of those can only be entered by DK. Inside, stomp the blue switches to rotate the room, and play a little matching game using the four-square boxes on each wall.
  • The other cabin is easy for DK. Just shoot down all the bees in the room.
  • DK’s blueprint is on a small ledge near the castle. You need to carefully walk on the small plank to get to it.
Bonus Game

Busy Barrel Barrage - Stand in the middle of a room and shoot the baddies so they stay away from you. You have to survive for 60 seconds.

Diddy
  • Diddy will also have to go in the igloo, but his task is easier than DK's. What you need to do, is remove the barrels from their bases in the correct order. The bases are numbered, but you can only see the numbers after picking up a barrel. So, pick up a barrel, and if it is not the right number, put it down and check another.
  • Right next to Funky's is a bonus barrel floating in mid air. Use your jetpack to reach it.
  • There are two doors for Diddy to enter on the large cabin. The first one is hard. You need to burst in, and defeat all the enemies in the time allowed. Use your jetpack and peanuts for the two weaker ones, then use oranges for the others.
  • Compared to the last banana, this one is very easy. Strap on your jetpack and light the candles.
  • After Tiny activates the fourth teleporter, Diddy can use the one of the stalagmite to reach the red Krusha.
Bonus Game

Mad Maze Maul - Bonk all the baddies in the maze and make it to the finish in time. There are 7 guys to defeat in 60 seconds.

Tiny
  • As with the others, Tiny must enter the igloo. Defeat the enemy inside, then stomp the switch. Then you will need to stomp the switch that is circling the room three times.
  • Nearby the igloo is a wall of ice with a small hole in it. Shrink down to get to a bonus barrel.
  • Near Funky's is a path leading to another wall of ice with another small hole in it. Glide over to the small ledge to shrink, then glide back and enter the tiny cave. Then use the Tiny pad to teleport inside one of the ice domes over near the igloo.
  • Finally, Tiny needs to go into the cabin. Defeat the enemies using oranges, then glide to get the banana.
  • Tiny’s purple Krusha can be found near the cabins.
Bonus Game

Krazy Kong Klamor - 60 seconds to shoot 5 golden bananas. But, the lights rapidly go on and off. If you want any chance of beating this one, you must fire before the light comes on.

Lanky
  • Surprise! Lanky also has to go through the igloo. By defeating all the enemies inside, a Lanky pad will appear. Then you need to use that to reach the banana.
  • Go near the cabin that can only be entered by DK, and there will be another cabin to the right that can be entered only by Lanky. On the roof is the pad which allows Lanky to enter. Inside, you need to float to the Lanky barrel, drop down and run at full speed to the switch in order to grab the banana in time.
  • The next two bananas are in the large ice castle. For the first one, stomp the switch and you will gain access to a race against the bug from the Angry Aztec level. Be sure to have collected Lanky's speed walk power from Cranky before you race here.
  • The next banana requires you to solve a small puzzle inside the castle. Simply turn over more squares than the monster, and you will win.
  • Use the Lanky pads to float up to the high ledge near Funky’s to find the blue Krusha.
Bonus Game

Scarab Slide II - Collect 50 coins. To beat the beatle, you must hop in the Lanky barrel so you can go fast.

Chunky
  • Inside the igloo, punch the flames to save the rabbit.
  • Find the small room with the giant rock. You need to turn into Hunky Chunky and carry it to the revolving switch. That will allow you access to the banana in the other ice dome near the igloo.
  • Go to Cranky and get your new potion. Then go to the entrance and smash through the wall to the Cranky pad inside. Use it and a banana will be revealed.
  • The final banana waits for you in the cabin. Stomp the bull's-eyes and a Chunky pad will appear. Use that to access a bonus barrel.
  • Chunky can find his Krusha on top of the igloo.
Bonus Game

Searchlight Seek - Hit the Klaptraps with melons, using only a flashlight to see. Hit 8 of them in a minute.

Creepy Castle

This is the final level where you will have to gather golden bananas. By now, all the puzzles here are easy as you have done most of them before. Cranky offers a new potion to allow you to stomp the red switches in this level.

Donkey
  • Near the entrance, there is a large tree. If you go to Funky and get the cool sniper gun, you can get a banana inside the tree. You need to zoom in with the gun to hit the targets to raise the water for the banana.
  • Inside the castle is a puzzle in a small way similar to the lever puzzle in Fungi Forest, and if you solve it you will need to complete another mine cart level. As in Fungi forest, the puzzle solution is on the wall.
  • Remember that Chunky puzzle in Fungi Forest where you had to form an your face? Well inside the castle DK has to do the same thing, but you need to stomp the tiles, not shoot them.
  • Inside the library, you need to first stomp the red switch, then use the DK barrel to run invincible to the banana.
  • Inside the big tree is a barrel blast, complete it to get to the yellow Krusha.
Bonus Game

Mine Cart Ride - Go on the mine track in the mine cart and collect 25 coins before the end.

Diddy
  • Now, Diddy must face the toughest puzzle in the game (yes, even harder than spelling "KONG"). In the catacombs you will find a large coffin where you must rack your brain and pound the switches in order. They are numbered 1 to 4, so try your best to bash them in order.
  • When you find the gold banana that disappears when you get close to it, simply snipe the peanut switch and swing to it.
  • Light the candles in the ballroom with your jetpack to get to a bonus barrel.
  • Fly to the top of the castle for another bonus barrel.
  • The red Krusha can be found in the middle of the crypt area.
Bonus Games

1. Big Bug Bash - 10 flies in 60 seconds.

2.Minecart Mayhem - In a minecart, going in circles, avoiding the TNT barrels for a minute.

Tiny
  • Jump and glide from each skeleton hand under the castle to reach the banana.
  • Again, under the castle, glide to the bonus barrel.
  • Inside the ballroom, use the Tiny pad to teleport to the top, then shrink down to complete another racing mini-game.
  • Find the silo outside the castle and shrink down. Then, bouce inside and shoot down all the enemies.
  • There is a ledge in the crypt area where the purple Krusha waits for Tiny.
Bonus Game

1. Teetering Turtle Trouble - Keep those snakes fed so the turtles keep spinning. Survive a minute.

2. Slot Car Race II - Race the car going through all the gates, collect 10 coins

Lanky
  • In the catacombs, shoot the grape switch, then use the Lanky barrel to run as fast as you can to the gate. Then use the music pad to get to the banana.
  • While under the castle, stomp the Lanky switch, then use the music pad. Finally, use the Lanky pads to float to a bonus barrel.
  • On the way to the top of the castle is a Lanky switch that will give you access to a hedge maze. Use the barrel to speed your way through it.
  • At the top of the castle stomp the Lanky switch. Then snipe the switches and float to the bonus barrel.
  • The blue Krusha can be found just beyond the drawbridge.
Bonus Games

1. Beaver Bother - Herd 15 beavers into the pit in a minute.

2. Kremling Kosh - Shooting with melons, hit 25 Kremlings in 60 seconds. Red Kremlings are, as always, worth 2 points.

Chunky
  • Inside the tree, Chunky can snipe a switch for a bonus barrel.
  • Under the castle, break open the coffins for a bonus barrel.
  • Find the small shack near the greenhouse, then break open the crate to find the Chunky pad. Turn invisible, then play your triangle to defeat the bats and get your banana.
  • In the museum, super punch the three gongs, then place the boulder on the table.
  • Chunky’s Blueprint is easy to find. Simply follow the trail of bananas from the dungeon entrance.
Bonus Games

1. Beaver Bother - 15 beavers in 60 seconds. Do not use the B button as much as you think you need to, that makes it harder.

2. Searchlight Seek - Hit 10 Klaptraps in 60 seconds. The key, as always, is to shoot a little ahead of them. After you hit one, find the next as quick as you can.

Central Hub

By now you are powerful enough to get all the central hub bananas at once. Some you may already have found just by exploring, but all are listed below. As with the normal levels, there are also blue prints to gather. You will want to be sure to find them all before heading to the final level.

Donkey
  • This is actually the first banana in the game. You get it after talking with K. Lumsy for the first time.
  • There is a banana on the way up to Frantic Factory. Shoot the coconut switch to get it.
  • In the Frantic Factory lobby, pull the lever to access the upper level where there is a music pad.
  • In the lobby of Crystal Caves, have Chunky break down the ice wall, then use the DK barrel to walk across the lava to the banana.
  • After Creepy Castle, and after you activate all the teleporters, use the teleporter near the Hideout Helm entrance then shoot the switch to reveal the Krusha.
Diddy
  • Once you have accessed the Diddy barrel in front of Fungi Forest, you can rocket over to the banana on top of the waterfall. To get the barrel have Chunky throw away the boulders near Angry Aztec, then use Lanky on the pad.
  • There is a bonus barrel high up on the top of the mountain that you will need to rocket to.
  • Right next to Snide’s (Snide is found on the island that Frantic Factory is), there is a Diddy pad to access a bonus barrel.
  • As with DK in the Frantic Factory lobby, Diddy has a banana in the Crystal Caves lobby. Use the Diddy barrel to fly as high as you can to find a music pad.
  • On the small island in the lobby to Creepy Castle there is a Krusha behind a cage. Use DK to open the cage, then defeat the enemy with Diddy.
Tiny
  • Tiny’s first banana is on the fairy island where you need to shoot a switch to get it.
  • In the lobby of Gloomy Galleon, Chunky can stomp a switch to open a small passageway for Tiny to enter. That will lead you to the banana.
  • If you hit the two gongs in the Angry Aztec lobby, a bonus barrel will appear that Tiny can glide to.
  • Use the Tiny pad on the island where Frantic Factory is to reach a music pad that will give you a banana.
  • With Chunky, punch the box in the lobby of Frantic Factory to reveal Tiny’s Krusha.
Lanky
  • In the very first level lobby, Jungle Japes, there is a music pad under a boulder that will give you a banana.
  • On the back on K. Lumsy’s island you’ll find a banana behind bars.
  • Inside that same island is a Lanky barrel and switch. Use the barrel, then run over the switch.
  • Inside the Creepy Castle lobby, use the Lanky pad to float to the top of the small island for a bonus barrel.
  • Lanky’s Krusha can be found in the lobby of Crystal Caves near the DK barrel.
Chunky
  • On the main island, just find banana behind bars and shoot the switch.
  • Near Angry Aztec throw the boulder then use the music pad.
  • After getting Tiny’s banana on the island where Frantic Factory is, a Chunky barrel will appear on the island where you found the fairy earlier. Use that and go to the large "X" platform. Then stomp the "X."
  • Make yourself invisible in the Hideout Helm lobby to reveal the way to a bonus barrel.
  • In the entrance lobby to Gloomy Galleon you will find Chunky’s Krusha.

The 201st Banana: You may have thought that you have found all the bananas once you collect number 200. But, you still have one more to get. After you take pictures of all the fairies in the game, return to the fairy island with Tiny. Inside the great fairy will reward you for your hard work with the final banana in the game.

Hideout Helm

To reach Hideout Helm, use the Tiny Pad at the back of the giant K. Rool island (after giving all the needed boss keys to K. Lumsy). you will be transported to the top of the island. Jump into the island's "mouth" and go inside. Switch to Chunky Kong with the Tag Barrel in this room, then use the Chunky pad to become invisible. Some vines appear! Use them to swing across the lava to the other side. Then enter Hideout Helm.

NOTE: You are given a time limit to de-activate the Blast-o-Matic machine. This time limit is based on the number of blueprints that you collected from the different stages. If you got all 40 blueprints, you get 50 minutes. It takes about 30 minutes for the average player. If you need more time, go back and get more blueprints!

Get Lanky Kong from the Tag barrel and use his orangstand to go up the steep slope (watch out for those enemies). Switch to Chunky and shoot the pineapple switch to open up a secret door. Switch to Tiny Kong and hop into the Tiny barrel, now you can fit into the small hole in the wall.

Now you are at the Blast-o-Matic machine. Switch to Donkey and let him pull the lever. Some DK Stars appear in the air, along with a Diddy barrel. Switch to Diddy and hop into the barrel. Use your snazzy flying skills to quickly fly through all of the DK stars before time runs out. Now the doors in this room open...but there is still a cage covering them. Let Chunky knock down 4 of these cages.

To open the K. Rool door, you must collect the 5 banana medals in this place. Getting banana medals here is different from in other stages. You need to go into the character's room and defeat 2 challenging mini- games. To open the room, simply play the appropriate instrument on the music pad. All of the doors are easily found except for the Diddy door, which is high in the air. Use the rocketbarrels to reach it.

DONKEY KONG

#1 - You need to jump into the blast barrel and shoot yourself at three different targets within the extremely small time limit. You need to have a quick eye here. There is no time for mistakes.

#2 - you are Rambi and you need to defeat the required number of Kremlings before time runs out. If you hit one of the electricity things, you are dead. Again, the time limit is extremely small and you will need to hurry.

CHUNKY KONG

#1 - After Donkey's two difficult challenges, this is like a bonus. You just need to break open the boxes to find a hidden Kremling and defeat him. Hop into the Chunky barrel to become big, then primate punch away. you are given more than enough time here.

#2 - Shoot five Kremlings with the help of your Sniper mode. This game was really easy for me since I still had some homing ammo left from some other level.

TINY KONG

#1 - In this one, you need to fly through the DK stars (with the pony tail whirl) without touching the floor, and then simian slam the switch at the end. Be careful in the third star, you will need to sly through it and make a sharp turn to land on the platform. Other than that one, it is pretty basic.

#2 - Now you will need to bounce on the mushrooms and fly through the DK stars (once again, using the pony tail whirl). You should have no problem with this one.

LANKY KONG

#1 - You need to find the switch in this maze, then cross the finish line. Get some speed from the Lanky barrel, then run through this maze quickly. With some luck, you can do it on your first try.

#2 - Your mission here is to shoot, and defeat, three bees. it is pretty hard because of the time limit, so be quick. Position yourself close to a bee and fire away. Then go to another bee and repeat.

DIDDY KONG

#1 - Of all the mini-game here, this is the weirdest. Find the Kremling that hit the switch to make is solid again, then simian slam it. you will heat a sound when you defeat the right Kremling. Keep your ears open.

#2 - Shoot all of the switches to get a nice surprise. Hop into the Diddy barrel to get the rocketbarrels, then fly up to the middle part of this place where the switches are. Shoot all four of them and the cage on the floor will lift up. Go down there and simian slam the switch.

Now that you have all of the banana medals, the K. Rool door will open up. The next door you come to required at least 4 battle crowns for you to pass (see the battle arenas section if you do not have enough). Now you will see a cinema of K. Rool fleeing Hideout Helm on a getaway jet. Continue and you will find a door with a picture of the Nintendo and Rareware coins on them. You need those coins to pass. Inside you will find two banana fairies and the final boss key.

Now that you have all of the keys, go back to K. Lumsy and free him. He will go to DK Island and chase down K. Rool's jetplane (this cinema reminds me of that crappy Godzilla movie). Now get over there to fight the final boss, in the final battle of the game. Good luck! (see the "Boss strategies" section below for details).

There are no bananas in the final level. But, you still need to work hard.

The first part of the level is timed, but if you managed to collect all of Snide’s blueprints you have plenty of time to complete it. Each Kong must use the same moves they have been using for the majority of the game to get to the machine room, and then stand on a music pad.

Once they all do that, each must go through mini-games. Once you complete that, K. Rool departs leaving behind the final boss key you need to free K. Lumsy. The problem is, you need both the Nintendo and the Rare coin to get in to the key.

For the Nintendo Coin:

You must first beat the original Donkey Kong game. It is located in the Frantic Factory area, and you need to use a Gorilla-Grab to operate the lever. Once you beat all four stages, play once more and finish it again to win the coin.

For the Rare Coin:

Collect at least fifteen Banana Medals, then go see Cranky. He lets you play the classic Jetpac game, and if you score 5,000 points, the Rareware coin falls from the sky.

Once you have the key, you can free K. Lumsy and go on to the final battle against K. Rool.

Boss Strategies

Army Dillo

The first boss is very simple. As DK, simply move left and right to dodge the fireballs, then run away from him when he rolls around the arena. When he pops his head out of his shell, toss the TNT barrel at him.

You need to give 60 regular bananas to Troff n' Scoff, then you can fight this boss with Donkey. It is a huge armadillo with a metal "shell" and two big guns sticking out of it. At first he will hide his head in the metal shell and start shooting fireballs at you. Just go left and right, avoiding them. After a while he'll stick his head out and laugh a bit. This is your chance! Get the TNT barrel in the center and throw it at his head to hurt him. Now he will curl up into a ball and start rolling at you. Just run away to avoid getting smashed until he goes back to his "fireball shooting" routine. Repeat the process until he is defeated (it takes only 3 hits).

Dogadon

Dogadon needs the same strategy to defeat as Army Dillo, but you use Diddy, and you do not need to worry about him rolling after you. Whenever he lands, toss the TNT barrel at him.

You need to give 120 regular bananas to Troff n' Scoff, then you can fight this boss with Diddy. He is a big red flying dragon (more like a dragonfly actually) that spits out fire...and he's very easy. His attacks are similar to the boss of Jungle Japes. His hovers in the air while throwing fireballs at you (although much faster). Move around to avoid getting hit. After a while he will stop to give you a chance to hit him. Get the TNT barrel and throw it at him to knock him into the lava. After swimming around a bit, hewill burst out and do the fireball throwing again. It takes 3 hits to defeat him.

Mad Jack

This jack-in-the-box is probably the most annoying and frustrating boss in the game. You need to use Tiny to glide from platform to platform as he chases around. When he lands you need to find a platform that is the same color as the one that he is sitting on, that also has a switch. Stomp the switch then repeat the process.

You need to give 200 regular bananas to Troff n' Scoff, then you can fight this boss with Tiny. Step into the light and the platforms will rise and bring you up to the sky. The arena is made up of 20 square platforms (4 rows, 4 columns) of alternating blue and white color. If you fall down, you will NOT lose energy and you will be brought back up. You should use the pony tail whirl to jump between platforms. The huge jack-o-lantern boss will chase you by jumping from platform to platform. Just get away from him until he stops.

When he stops, TWO switches will appear. One on a white square and one on a blue one. You need to go to the switch that is on the same colored block as the boss and simian slam it to hurt him. You will get hurt if you slam the other one. He will repeat the procedure again. After you hit him twice, there will be no lights shining on the switches so they will be harder to spot. After you hurt him 3 times, he will start shooting lasers at you, which are much harder to avoid. After you hurt him 4 times, he'll become *invisible*. You can still see his shadow and the sparkles that trail him...and you WILL get hurt if he stomps on you. After hitting him the 5th time, he is defeated.

Puftoss

For this easy boss, simply use Lanky and drive the boat through the five DK stars multiple times.

You need to give 250 regular bananas to Troff n' Scoff, then you can fight this boss with Lanky. He's a big spiky blowfish that does not move. He just stays in the center and spins around to shoot fireballs at you. To avoid those fireballs, just do not STOP moving! The entire battle is done on a boat (press Z to move forward, control stick to steer, and A to jump). Each time you go through a DK star, a metal pole thing will come out of the water. After driving through 5 DK stars, the poles will make an electric current to zap the fish! Zap him five times to fully defeat him. there is a time limit to go through the stars that begins as soon as you go through the first one. If you do not go through the next DK star within the time limit, the poles will go down and you have to start again. it is 30 seconds for the first time, then 25, then 20, then 15, then 10.

Dogadon 2

Now, Chunky has to face Dogadon. Use the same strategy as before, but after the platform starts to sink, throw the TNT barrel at him, use the Chunky barrel, and super punch him three times every chance you get.

You need to give 300 regular bananas to Troff n' Scoff, then you can fight this boss with Chunky. He's that sissy dragonfly from Angry Aztecs...but this time he's not a sissy anymore. At first he'll fly in the air and quickly throw fireballs at you. Avoid them by moving left and right. When he stops (practically giving you a chance to hit him), throw the TNT barrel at him. you will continue on like this for a while. He learned some new attacks: A shockwave attack, similar to what the Kasplats do to you (simply jump over it), and a 'firewave' attack. The firewave seems to be unavoidable. After a while, he'll go completely mad and stomp on the platform, causing it to slowly sink. You have a limited time before it completely sinks into the lava! Continue on like before... but after you hit him with the TNT barrel, go into the Chunky barrel to become huge and start hitting him (you should be able to hit him AT LEAST 9 times). Be as fast as you can, because this platform WILL sink into the lava if you are not fast enough. After quite a few hits, he'll be defeated.

Army Dillo 2

Again, DK must face Army Dillo. Use the same strategy as before, and then run in very tight circles to shake the new homing missile that he will fire at you.

You need to give 350 regular bananas to Troff n' Scoff, then you can fight this boss with Donkey. That dumb armadillo from Jungle Japes is back, and he's got a few new tricks to try out on you. At first he'll do the same thing he did in the other battle, fling fireballs at you. Avoid them by moving to the side. As always, throw a TNT barrel at him at every chance you get. After a while, his cannons turn into rockets and lift him and drop him down, sending shockwaves through the arena (you can easily jump over them). Then his guns turn into a HUGE cannon on his back that throws fireballs at you (avoid them by moving left and right). His last new trick is a homing missile that chases you around. Get rid of it by making it smash into the TNT barrel in the center. Hit him with the TNT barrel a few more times.

King Kut Out

The final "regular" boss is a cardboard cut-out of K. Rool. Use each Kong and blast them to the giant piece of paper.

K. Rool

To defeat K Rool you will need to use all the Kongs and their own special abilities:

  • DK: Immediately jump to the turnbuckles, and eventually barrels will appear over each one. Wait until K Rool plays it up for the crowd, and then blast yourself at him.
  • Diddy: Dodge the gloves until the Diddy barrel appears. Then, fly up to the top of the arena and shoot the targets on the lights so that they will fall on K Rool.
  • Lanky: Use Lanky’s long reach to hit the switches outside of the ring. Then throw the barrel onto the mat.
  • Tiny: Hover over the shock waves, then use the Tiny barrel to shrink and enter K Rool’s shoe. Shoot the first toe once, the second twice, the third three times, and the fourth four times.
  • Chunky: Dodge the shadow of the invisible K Rool, then use the Chunky pads to cloak yourself, and then use the Chunky barrel to become super buff Chunky. You can then lay the final smackdown on K Rool.

You need to give 400 regular bananas to Troff n' Scoff, then you can fight this boss with Lanky. No, it is not K. Rool...it is just a crappy cardboard cut-out of him. At first, he'll pop up on one side of the arena and shoot a few laser beams at you. Avoid them and quickly hop into the cannon to shoot yourself at him (and thereby hurt him). Continue like this until you hit him 3 times, then he'll lose an arm. [NOTE: If you miss him and blast yourself out of the arena, you can switch to a different Kong until all 5 are gone]. Now there will be 2 pictures of K. Rool that pop up. Be sure to blast yourself at the one that is solid, not the fake one. After 3 more hits, he loses another arm. Now comes that hard part. He'll pop up and down really fast and pop up again on another side (he rotates counter-clockwise). it is hard to see what side he's on thanks to DK64's horrible camera system. To do this well, get close to one cannon and adjust the camera so that you see the wall at the *right* side of it. When you see K. Rool come up on that side, get in the cannon as soon as he goes down and you hear him pop up on your side. Do this 3 more times you are finished.

FINAL BOSS -- KING K. ROOL

The final battle with K. Rool is a sort of boxing match. You get 12 rounds to defeat him, and each round lasts only 3 minutes. If you run out of energy you are game over, even if you have other Kongs left. Each Kong gets a turn in battling K. Rool. Starting with Donkey Kong.

DONKEY KONG: K. Rool jumps in the air and slam the ground, sending shockwaves through the arena. You can easily avoid them by jumping over. As soon as the blast barrels appear, climb up a corner of the arena and hop into it. The barrel moves up and down. As soon as you see K. Rool lift up his arms (as if bowing to the crowd), blast and him and hurt him! You need to do this with all of the barrels, and it gets harder each time. In the last barrel, you need to blast at him on the 5th "bounce" of the barrel. When this is all done, you move into the next round with Diddy Kong.

DIDDY KONG: K. Rool throws his glove around to attack you, and it comes right back to him like a boomerang. Avoid that for a few times and a Diddy barrel will appear in the center of the ring. Hop into it to get the rocketbarrels, then boost to the air where the spotlights are. There are two targets on one of the spotlights. Shoot both of the targets with peanuts (press B) and it will fall down...on K. Rool! Then the targets move to a different spotlight. Continue doing this with all of the lights and K. Rool is done for this round.

LANKY KONG: That spotlight is still on K. Rool's head, so he cannot see anything and just goes around the arena like a drunk. There are small towers just outside the ring with buttons on them. You need to get as close to it as possible and push the button with your amazingly long arms (press B). When the button is pressed, a barrel appears. Throw the barrel to the center of the ring to set a banana peel there. Get ready at one of the music pads at the corners. When the banana peel is between you and K. Rool, play your instrument. K. Rool will come running toward you and slip on the banana peel. Do this 4 times to go to the next round.

TINY KONG: That spotlight is back off his head, and he is back to his shockwave attacks. This time it is much bigger, so you need to ponytail whirl over it. After a while, the Tiny barrel appears in the center. Jump into it to become small, then enter the small hole in K. Rool's shoe. Now you are in a battle with his huge foot. When you see the toes wiggle, be careful because those toes move forward and hurt you. Continue dodging the toes until they all stop and one toe sticks up. Shoot it with a feather to tickle him. Then you come out of the shoe. Repeat the process until all four toes turn red (K. Rool apparently gets knocked out from a tickled foot). The second toe takes 2 shots to turn red, 3 shots for the 3rd toe, and 4 shots for the 4th one. Onward to the final round.

CHUNKY KONG: K. Rool does not feel like doing shockwaves this time. He bounces off the sides of the ring and he turns invisible. Fortunately, you can still see his shadow. Be careful not to get close to that shadow and simian slam the Chunky switch in the center. Chunky pads appear. Use the to become invisible yourself. Now you can see K. Rool, and there is a Chunky barrel in the center. Use it to become giant Kong and you are stuck in the corner. K. Rool is coming right toward you. When K. Rool is in front of you, do a primate punch (Z + B) to knock him to the other side. Continue repeating this process. It gets harder each time. In the 2nd time, he is faster. In the 3rd time, he is invisible. And in the 4th time, he is invisible AND move from side to side instead of a straight line. After 4 hits, he is knocked out for good.

Secrets

The Fairies

The fairies are the main key used to unlock secrets. These are usually hidden very well, and you need to use the camera to snap a picture of them. Before you can take pictures, you need to get the camera in the fairy-shaped stone structure located in the main hub. Simply use Tiny and shrink yourself to get into the structure. Now you are ready to go fairy hunting. Once captured on film, they will unlock secrets in the "Mystery Menu". Some things only require a few fairies, while others will require you to search out every single one in the game.

DK Theater
Requirements: 2 Fairies

Once you locate and photograph two fairies, you can access the DK Theater. As the name implies, it allows you to view any of the cut-scenes in the game (including the opening rap) over and over until you get sick of them.

DK Bonus Stages
Requirements: 6 Fairies

Once you locate both Rambi the rhino, and Enguarde the swordfish, you can access bonus levels starring them with six fairy pictures.

The Original Donkey Kong in Mystery Menu
Requirements: 6 Fairies and the Nintendo Coin

To get the Nintendo coin that is required for unlimited play, you must first beat the original Donkey Kong game. It is located in the Frantic Factory area, and you will need to use a Gorilla-Grab to operate the lever. Once you beat all four stages, play once more and finish it again to win the coin. When you shoot six fairy photos, you will then be able to play the original Donkey Kong game from 1981 at any time via the Mystery Menu

Jetpac in Mystery Menu
Requirements: 6 Fairies and the Rareware Coin

To access the 1983 Rare game Jetpac in the Mystery Menu, you need six fairies and the Rareware coin.

You get the Rare coin in a similar way in which you got the Nintendo coin. Collect at least fifteen Banana Medals, then go see Cranky. He will let you play the game, and if you score 5,000 points the Rareware coin will fall from the sky. Collect the coin to unlock the game in the Mystery Menu.

Boss Battle
Requirements: 10 Fairies

Collect ten fairy pictures to unlock a mode where you can fight any boss that you have already defeated in the game.

Krusha in Multi-Player
Requirements: 15 Fairies

The big bad gator from previous DK games makes a cameo appearance in the multi-player modes if you hunt down fifteen fairies.

Cheat Mode
Requirements: 20 Fairies

If you work hard and manage to collect every fairy hiding in this gargantuan game you will be able to unlock the cheat mode. This allows you to have an infinite supply off all the items that you collect in the game. That means, you will never have to worry about running out of ammo again!

The Blueprints

The blueprints aren't as crucial to collect (for secrets) as the fairies, but if you collect all 40 and return them to Snide, you will gain access to eight bonus levels.

Kremling Kosh

Kremling Kosh is basically Whack-a-Mole, but instead of moles you are whacking Kremlings. The same rules apply, just shoot a melon when the Kremling pops up.

Batty Barrel Bash

Although it has an unusual name, this is an easy game. It’s a slot machine. Use A to spin the wheels, and then press A each time you wish to stop one

Searchlight Seek

Krazy Kong Klamor

In this shooting gallery, aim and shoot at the large banana. Be sure to not hit the Kongs!

Peril Path Panic

This is another shooting gallery where you must shoot melons into the mouths of the crocs so that they will not eat the fairies.

Big Bug Bash

This is a simple bonus level where you just have to swat the fly in the barrel.

Teetering Turtle Trouble

This is yet another shooting gallery. This time, you must shoot the snakes so that they will not drop the turtles.
