Introduction

This is the second installment in the NBA Street series. It was released on the Xbox, Gamecube, and PlayStation 2. It was developed by EA Sports Big and published by EA. Like the other games in this series, it is a cartoonish take on street basketball.

Three-on-three action basketball game. Like the first NBA Street, Vol. 2's roster of players comprises both fictional Street Legends and real NBA players. In addition to teams of contemporary superstars, the licensed half of the roster also includes great NBA names of yesteryear — Julius Erving, Clyde Drexler, Dominque Wilkins, Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Pete Maravich, George Gervin, Wilt Chamberlain, Jerry West, Bill Walton, and more. The classic players add a nice bit of leavening to the game's style, with the short shorts and high socks of the NBA's old school contrasting with today's baggy jerseys and loosened-up attitude. In total, the roster includes 145 modern players, 6 fictional Street Legends, and 25 NBA Legends.

Basketball returns to the streets in NBA Street Vol. 2, featuring more players, electrifying moves, and online multiplayer battles. Defeat the best players in the game today and even bring legends such as Dr. J, Magic, Bird, Wilt, and Moses out of retirement for some on-court brawling. NBA Street Vol. 2 features all-new spectacular dunks, dribbles, and passes that'll take show-stopping Gamebreakers to the next level. You can take your game against computer opponents or friends, or play with up to three other players online. Are you good enough to rule the streets?

Game Modes

Pick Up Game

The exhibition mode in the game. Players can play the computer or up to 4 can battle it out at once. Up to 4 Profiles can be loaded at once as well, allowing you to keep track of overall wins and losses.

NBA Challenge

A tour style mode. You pick a region such as the Northwest to play in. You must beat NBA teams in that region to unlock the final game, a game against the legends of that Region.

Be A Legend

The "story" mode of a game. You create a character and attempt to conquer the courts with him/her. You start out with low stats and a weak team, but as you play and win you have the opportunity to add better players to your teams and increase your skill points. Winning games and tournaments unlocks new courts to play on. Throughout the "Be A Legend " mode you play against many NBA players and a different Street legends.

Street School

An interactive tutorial showing you how to use the game's controls.

Gameplay

The object of the game is to score points, just like in real basketball. The majority of games go to 21, with the winner having to win by at least 2 points. Unlike most real street basketball the full-court is usually used for play. Players have a limited turbo meter that allows them to perform tricks, trick counters, dunks, and trick blocks. The more stylish you are the more trick points you accumulate. If a player accumulates enough trick points they can activate a gamebreaker. A gamebreaker is a special shot that is worth the same as a normal shot, but takes away a point from your opponent.

Level 2 Gamebreaker

Vol. 2 added new gameplay mechanics to the series, with the most significant addition being the introduction of level 2 Gamebreakers. In the first game, the player could only achieve a level 1 Gamebreakers, while Vol. 2 introduced the ability to "pocket" your first Gamebreaker, thus allowing you to rack up enough points to receive a level 2 version. The level 2 Gamebreaker, which was also unblockable, gave the team 2 points and takes away 3 to 4 points from the opponent, depending on where the shot is from.

New Moves

New moves were also introduced in the game. These moves included the Back 2 Papa (passing to yourself off the backboard), Off the Heezay (passing to yourself off an opponent's head), and the Be the Oop (an alley oop to yourself).

NBA Legends

The other big addition was the ability to play as NBA Legends such as Bill Russell, Wilt Chamberlain, and various versions of Michael Jordan.

NBA Challenge

NBA Street Vol.2 NBA Challenge. Street 2's NBA Challenge mode merely asks you to beat every team in the league, and along the way you unlock the actual NBA Legends themselves. This mode is structured to select a particular division North West or South East that don not always match up to real NBA divisions. You are locked into that division until you beat every team. Once you have been the six or so teams in a division you face a trio of NBA Legends from teams featured in that division. So the South West division featuring the Lakers, Spurs, Suns, Mavs, Clips, and Rockets will be one of the toughest because the NBA's Western Conference is brutal, but guys like George Gervin, James Worthy, and Moses Malone will be waiting for you at the end of that division run.

The key in NBA Challenge is using the correct team to get the job done. You cannot throw a squad together to fit the needs of your next opponent, you have to select a pre-existing team from the team select menu. The great part is any team you created yourself will show up in the team select menu. Any crazy combination of NBA players, created players, Street Legends, NBA Legends or unlocked characters can be assembled into a five man team that is available in NBA Challenge. Obviously you will not have too many great players to work with initially, but there are plenty of talented NBA players to get you over until guys like David Thompson, Osmosis, Nelly, and Darryl Dawkins are available.

The best strategy in selecting your team for a run through a division is to gameplan for the toughest teams in that division. In the unforgiving South West division, you pretty much have to nut up against the Spurs' David Robinson and Tim Duncan, Kobe Bryant, and Shaquille O'Neal on the Lakers, Yao Ming and Steve Francis of the Rockets, Dirk Nowitzki and Michael Finley of the Mavericks and Pheonix's ridiculously overrated mix of Stephon Marbury, Amare Stoudemire, Penny Hardaway, and Shawn Marion. The LA Clippers and they are loaded with Lamar Odom and Andre Miller.

There is no strategy beyond that for the South West division because you have so much defensive talent concentrated in one area. And make no mistake, it is the defensive abilities of those teams that aggravate you the most. Scoring comes easy enough with a few hours gameplay on NBA Street Vol. 2, but applying defensive pressure consistently with plenty of steals and blocks is the real challenge as you play through 40 or so NBA Challenge games.

The other divisions however are a little more manageable. The class of the Central division will be Indiana, Minnesota, and Detroit where Jermaine O'Neal, Kevin Garnett, and Ben Wallace, respectively, are waiting to put the heat on you. New Jersey and Philadelphia will be the biggest problems in the North East with Jason Kidd, Dikembe Mutombo, and Allen Iverson applying the defensive pressure all around. The South East is a relative cakewalk with Orlando's one-man gang Tracy McGrady representing the greatest threat in the entire division made up of Atlanta, Orlando, Memphis, New Orleans and Miami. Sacramento and Portland are the powerhouses of the North West division with the most versatile and well-balanced teams.

Just like in Be a Legend mode, having a well balanced team is the key to dominating the NBA Challenge. Your talent pool you are selecting from is made up of the very best ball handlers, scorers, and big men available in the game, especially if you have unlocked a lot of cool new characters. If you have put in the time you could have a three man team made up entirely of maxed out created characters, a team of Michael Jordan's from '85, '96, and 2003 or the all-time Dream Team of Dr. J, Larry Bird, and Magic Johnson. But if you are anxious to dominate the NBA right away, one of the combos mentioned above (Payton, Yao, Kobe or Shaq, Garnett, A.I.) will get you through NBA Challenge. Since you have the best players on your team, it is up to you to get the most out of your Shaq when you go up against the CPU's Laker squad.

One surefire way to tip the scales in your favor is to always include your created player on the team you are running through NBA Challenge. He or she is the one you are most familiar with anyway if you have been playing through Be a Legend and they are also the only ones who can be maxed out in attributes. You can have as much power and dunk ability as Shaq but with the handles of Allen Iverson in one player. Get some guys on your team who does not screw up and be a ballhog. That is the best strategy for NBA Challenge. If you and a buddy want to proceed through NBA Challenge cooperatively then it really does not matter who you pick as your third since two human players even with crappy characters should be able to outsmart the CPU.

Be A Legend

The first thing you want to do before creating your street legend, is backing out of the Legend mode and heading straight to Street School. This teaches you how to successfully play the game and you earn 100 skill points to help improve your baller before you even create him.

After graduating from Street School, it is time to create your character. When creating your player, there is one thing you need to remember, and that is no matter how many attribute points you earn or buy, the one thing you can never change about your baller is his size. In Street, just like the NBA, the team that controls the paint, controls the game, and the way you control the paint is through size. Even though you can pick up new players off of the teams you beat, you do not get an effective big man until you pick up Shaq toward the later stages of the game. Since swing men and point guards are in surplus throughout the mode, it is actually best if you create your own seven-footer to patrol the paint. And do not make him some string bean Shawn Bradley body either. Give him some beef and make him the massive body type to knock your opponents around from the jump.

The thing is, if you make a seven footer, you do not need to improve his rebounding or shot blocking for a while, as he is naturally good in those areas just because of his height. This frees you up to give him handles, shots, and dunks. Imagine a seven footer who can handle like Iverson, shoot like Bird, and dunk like Shaq. If you create the perfect big man, your imagination could become a reality.

Another important factor when adding skill points to your character is you can only crown (completely max out) one attribute. So do not go ahead and give the crown to your player's dunks thinking you can crown his handles later. Make a decision of what kind of player you want early, then carefully distribute the points accordingly.

When you first start playing games and you are picking teammates, you need a ball handler and a shooter to go along with your big man. Look through the list of local balers and take the two you think fit the bill best (do not worry too much, you are able to update your team after each win with better players). Some of the better players you want to pick up as play progresses include Gilbert and Reggie. Gilbert can make lots of plays with his quickness and shakes, and Reggie is one of the best early leapers in the game and should provide plenty of thrills high above the rim.

An important thing to remember when playing Legend mode is to completely finish off the area you are playing in before moving on to the next city or challenge. By doing this, you earn bonus attribute points for finishing the area, and this improves your chance as you advance against more highly skilled computer opponents. It is also important to complete the various street challenges in the various cities as this helps you max out your player's skill set a lot quicker.

The first Street Legend you encounter is Stretch in Soul in the Hole. Beat him and add him to your team immediately. Stretch is a tall player who blocks a lot of shots. Adding him to your team of the big man and Gilbert virtually ensures that you dominate the Soul Street Challenge.

Once you beat the Soul in the Hole Street Challenge, you are able to pick up a little known NBA player who can make an immediate impact on your team. His name is Chris Whitney, and the guy has such good handles and clutch shot, that he can carry your team as you continue to upgrade your created player's skills. Play with Stretch, Whitney, and your big man to dominate everyone in your path.

You want to stick with that lineup until you have the opportunity to pick up John Stockton. Stockton might not look like a street baller, but the man hits threes with little effort, and is actually even smoother at the shakes than Whitney.

NBA Street Vol.2 Be A Legend. As you continue through the game, the lineup of Stockton, Stretch, and your seven-footer can pretty much handle all comers. Between Stretch and your big man, you should block a ton of shots, not to mention control the boards. Keep them on the inside, while busting from the outside with Stockton. Keep the lineup in tact until you have the opportunity to pick up Gary Payton, and replace Stockton for G.P. Payton can shoot just as well, has extreme handles, and is a better defensive player than Stockton. Other players that can help you out (and you can switch in if you get bored of simply using the same lineup), are Eddie Jones (steals), Troy Murphy (boards), Richard Jefferson (dunks), and Jerry Stackhouse (shots/dunks). Most of the Street Legends, like Biggie Little and Dime, while dominant in one area like handles or steals, are not as good overall as the various NBA stars and cannot help you enough to even bother with. Stretch is the man, everyone else is just visiting.

The only real difficult choice you need to make is whether you want to take Kobe or Shaq. The thing is, Shaq is better than Stretch, but Kobe is better than just about any other swing man like Stackhouse or Jefferson. It comes down to the type of game you like to play. If you add Shaq to the lineup of Payton and your seven-footer (who should be the man at handles and shots), you are going to dominate the lane. But if you made your seven-footer more Shaq-like, and decided to max him out in dunks and power, then you do not need two of the same player, so take Kobe. Do not worry, though, you get the chance to pick up whomever you do not select out in Oakland, if you are a big Lakers fan you can actually run a team of Kobe, Shaq, and your big man (decked out in a throwback Wilt jersey).

The most important thing to remember when playing through the game is to simply know the strengths of each of the players out on the court. If you are playing with Eddie Jones, do not stick him under the basket and wait for blocks. Jones can D-up any guard or forward in the NBA, and he is more likely to swipe the ball mid-dribble than jump up and swat away a potential dunk. The same thing goes for players like Shaq. Do not try to dribble the ball up court with Shaq and bust some mad dribble shake. Most likely, you lose control of the ball and turn it over. Leave the dribbling to the small guys (unless you crowned your big man's handles), otherwise, leave Shaq in the paint as your point guard dribbles the ball up and your swing player hangs out for a three.

The final game in Be A Legend mode actually puts you on the court against a trio of legends, Dr. J, Connie Hawkins, and Earl Monroe. Beat them and you unlock them as playable characters. By now, your player should be pretty maxed out in terms of skills. If this is the case, you have earned the title of Legend. If not, keep your head up and keep bustin' those threes. The better you pass the ball, the more easy shots you get, and in the end, that is all you need to become a legend in more than your own mind.

Got Game?

By Loren Coleman

Here you go, taking to the asphalt at Brooklyn's famous Soul in the Hole street court. Somebody brought a box, 'cause Nelly's Not In My House is pumping out solid tunes, and already, you have got three long and lanky players in your face. You cut around, rifle a pass that you bounce off the head of one defender, and then go to the hoop on your own, while calling back for the ball. And, it is none other than Dr. J, the jam-master himself, who gives you the alley-oop pass, and you slam it home!

that's what Electronic Arts delivers in their newest follow-up, NBA Street Vol.2, a three-on-three street battle with no rules, fast action, and some of the biggest game-breaker moves you'll find this side of Oakland's Mosswood court.

So, how do you begin to measure up? First, be prepared to spend quite a bit of time in the pick-up game tutorial, which lets you practice several ways to do dozens of moves, from basic passing to calling back your pass to setting yourself up for an alley-oop slam. Your opponents might not have the same level of game you'll be seeing eventually, but it is still a chance to get your virtual feet on the court and build some skills. You're gonna need 'em because look at the talent EA has lined up:

Dr. J, Larry Bird, “Magic” Johnson, and Clyde Drexler to name a few. The Chinese rookie Yao Ming, Walt Frazier, and Moses Malone to name a few more. There's also Wilt Chamberlain, James Worthy, Isaiah Thomas, Bob Cousy, and three (count 'em, three!) versions of Michael Jordan. You get more than 140 NBA stars, including 25 NBA legends and six street legends (in case you are just too good for that easy-court stuff).

Every player is artistically rendered, meaning that the designers spent more time on style than a detailed mirror-image of the person. There is definitely a kind of retro feel to it. But, this actually works in the game's favor, putting that much more flair and color into theaction. The 10 different street courts, all modeled after real-world, famous (or infamous) locations, are likewise given a touch-up that accents, rather than distracts, from the game. It's the street-basketball world, remember, and you are a street player. If you want reality, go shoot some mediocre hoops at the local YMCA. I promise, this is a lot more fun.

When EA promises no-rules, no-holds-barred street play, that is just what you get. Do not go crying to your friends because the other team puts on their game faces and comes for your hide. You have the same advantages. You can goal tend and drive into the pack like a bull—fouling your opponent simply means that he was not watching. There are no whistles and no shot clock (unless you want one). In fact, you can add a few game-tipping adjustments (like the shot clock), if you want to really throw your opponents an advantage. You can also spot them points. You can even set up a “dunk-only” game that gives nuthin' for anything that does not go into the net followed by your hand (and most of your arm). Posers beware. This option sets you up for some of the most brutal games you are likely to see. It is not for the faint of heart.

Still not enough? How about some tweaks to the A.I.'s gameplay? Picking the three tallest attackers is still a viable option, but not necessarily the ultimate team. Wanna try to steal from that seven-foot-plus monster? Faster, little guys will have a good advantage, so there are more well-rounded teams. And, then, there is the double game-breaker. You can still rack up points and build power toward that score-tilting combination that not only feeds you points, like His Airness feeds the hoop, but also grabs them away from your opponent, too. But, keep playing your best game, and you can double-up. A hidden game-breaker meter keeps building power until you have banked the best you ever have, and after that, go for the gold, baby. Double game-breakers are unblockable, unstealable, and deliver humiliation to your opponent in a cut-scene movie that leaves you jumping in his face and waving fists in the air.

X-Factor: Off the Heezay

By Ben Barker

Electronic Arts, the champions of console sports publishing, brings the authentic back-alley ball of the NBA Streetseries to the Xbox® with the stunning NBA Street Vol.2. This game lets you hit the asphalt (or concrete) with 25 new NBA legends, a fat roster of current pro ballers, and your own custom-designed players and games.

Look Sharp

The gritty graphics crackle with realism and style that truly shines on the Xbox hardware. The standard play view offers enough detail to see the sweat on the players' foreheads, but lets you see enough of the court to plan your moves with precision. Each player has a distinct uniform (sometimes actual game togs, but usually a street version of same), and your choice of ready-made players and legends borders on overkill. For legend value alone, choose from a list that includes Dr. J, Magic Johnson, Wilt the Stilt, Bill Walton, Clyde Drexler, Isaiah Thomas, Pistol Pete Maravich, or one of three different Michael Jordan options. (Like Godzilla, Jordan plays and looks differently depending on the era. Of course, he doesn’t have atomic breath, but come on, he’s Jordan.)

The players look good, but the gloriously detailed real-world basketball courts look even better. NBA Street Vol.2 lets you try out the finest street hoops arenas in the country, without blowing the college fund on air fare (or, if you live in New York, cab fare). Take on the greats in Manhattan’s Uptown, Philly’s Broad Street, Brooklyn’s Soul in the Hole, the NYC Rec Center, The Cage at Greenwich Village, Oakland’s Mosswood, Foster Beach outside of Chicago, L.A.’s Lincoln College, Rucker Park in Harlem, and even the pastoral asphalt of Seattle’s Greenlake. You’ll need to work on your skills to unlock some of these classic courts, but they’re worth it.

The Jams Are Fully Pumped

NBA Street Vol.2 comes packed with woofer-worthy hip-hop and R&B tracks. In addition to Nelly's exclusive Not In My House, you can groove your game to the dulcet tones of artists like MC Lyte, Nate Dogg, and Erick Sermon (featuring Redman). The music never overpowers the gameplay audio (well, unless you trick out your audio options to do so), which layers the courtside trash talk with ambient sounds appropriate to the locale. Players call for passes in directional stereo, helping you manage your plays in-game without slowing down.

But, How Does It Play?

EA’s latest foray into the NBA plays remarkably smooth, but the game truly shines when you master the Tony Hawk-style trick system. While simple moves—passing, shooting, evading defenders — are easy to pick up and exploit, you will get bonus points for dunks, alley-oops, and a gaggle of other outrageous tricks that would never be allowed on a professional court. NBA Street training mode guides you through even the most difficult combos and teaches you how to make the most of “game-breakers.” These spectacular shots (applied with a dose of turbo power from your recharging turbo meter) don’t just score, they demoralize the other team so badly that they’ll have to give you some of their points.

Now, this is street ball — goal tending, fouls, and the like aren't just allowed, they’re encouraged. With the “My Rules” option, you can further customize game types to your liking. Set up a Trick Challenge, and win by scoring bonus points with a Back 2 Poppa or an Off the Heezay. Add and manipulate the shot clock, adjust the points needed for victory, set up a slam-dunk-only game, or, if you’re feeling cocky, spot your opponent some points that you can take back later with a game-breaker.

Get In the Game

Like many sports titles, NBA Street Vol.2 lets you create your own superstar from the ground up. You get a full range of body types, from shot-blocking giants to fast-moving dunk maestros. You can place your custom baller in your own team — and select an original logo — then enter the Pick-Up Game, NBA Challenge, or Be a Legend modes. Myself, I built a gigantic Princess Leia clone and teamed her up with Rick Barry, Magic, Dr. J, Bill Walton, and a Wizards-flavored Jordan.

No other console does the crystal clarity, immersive sound, or smooth gameplay of NBA Street Vol.2 like the Xbox, which allows up to four players to take to the court at once. So, call out your rivals, and get set for the tip-off — EA’s taking it to the street.
