Donkey Kong Country #21 - Chimp Caverns

Chimp Caverns - Walkthrough

Donkey Kong Country #21

Chimp Caverns

Chimp Caverns is the sixth and final world in Donkey Kong Country, located in the eye area of Donkey Kong Island. As its name suggests, Chimp Caverns is set in a large cavern, and it occurs before the boss fight against King K. Rool on Gang-Plank Galleon. The Cave world from Donkey Kong Country Returns is thematically similar and has been suggested to be the same location.

There are five levels in Chimp Caverns, and an additional sixth level, Necky Nutmare, in the Game Boy Color port. Master Necky Snr. is the boss of Chimp Caverns, and is fought at the bottom-right corner of the area. Chimp Caverns appears to be another industrial Kremling mining center like the previous world, Kremkroc Industries, Inc., considering the presence of fuel-run platforms in Tanked Up Trouble and metal platforms in Platform Perils. Chimp Caverns also features numerous mines, including one filled with mist. A body of water appears at the bottom of the world map, dividing the location in two. The Kongs can cross the water by using a bridge. A ladder is also shown at the left and right sides of the world map.

1. Tanked Up Trouble, Chimp Caverns

Donkey Kong Country Chimp Caverns - 1. Tanked Up Trouble Map.

The first stage of Chimp Caverns is a walkway. Similar to a previous stage in the game, two small, automatic platforms must be used by the Kongs to traverse most of location. However, despite the player having no control over these platforms, they consume fuel as they move. Five lateral lights display the current quantity of fuel. Throughout the stage, the fuel supply must be refilled by the primates collecting at least most of the Fuel Barrels in the area. At some points, the heroes must abandon the platforms temporarily in order to reach these barrels located away from them, while also avoiding enemies on the way. Neckies, regular Kritters, Zingers and Gnawties are enemies in the stage.

In Tanked Up Trouble, Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong must stand on a moving platform to progress through the level. The platform is like those from Trick Track Trek, as it moves slowly on a set path. The main difference with the platforms of Tanked Up Trouble is that they run on limited fuel, and the Kongs must provide it with Fuel Canisters to keep it running. The platform starts entirely fueled, and its fuel gauge is represented by five circles on the side of the platform. The circles start out green, but as the fuel depletes, the circles slowly change to red.

If the circles are orange, it means that the platform is fueled halfway. The Kongs cannot skip a Fuel Canister because it usually results in the platform running out of fuel before coming within distance of another Fuel Canister. Zingers are the main enemy in the level, and they are encountered during the latter half of the level. Some Kritters are on the small boardwalk platforms which hang from the ceiling. The Kongs also encounter some Neckys, mostly during the first half of the level.

If the platform runs out of fuel, it falls off the track with the Kongs. Furthermore, if the platform falls off-track while the Kongs are standing on a boardwalk, they cannot progress any farther. If this occurs, the Bonus Level failure theme plays, with the Kongs doing the corresponding animation, and they lose an extra life.

Layout

At the start of the level, the Kongs can find a pit with a slanted pathway on the other side of it. After crossing another gap, they land on a flat scaffold with a dark platform ahead of it. The platform is activated upon touching it. The platform, running on a limited supply of fuel leads them to a Fuel Canister, which refuels it completely. Afterwards, the platform makes a 90 degree turn, beginning to travel upwards. Shortly after, it pulls them to the east, where a Fuel Canister can be found above a Necky. The third Fuel Canister waits just ahead next to a hanging platform with some bananas on it. The platform then leads them down a few sharp turns to a Necky, who is followed by a thin, black platform with an arrow on it; this platform slowly drops after being stood on. A Fuel Canister hovers above the platform. Eventually, the Kongs' mobile platform pulls them towards a set of hanging platforms, one of which that holds a Kritter and another Fuel Canister.

At this point, the platform begins to gain speed, heading towards a pair of black platforms, similar to the one found previously. A Fuel Canister hovers around them. The heroes can also find a Necky after the second of these platforms. Once they get back onto the mobile platform, it makes a sharp turn, beginning to move upwards. As they ride up, they ride past a Kritter, who stands on a hanging platform with the letter O above it. Another Kritter stands on a platform at the top of the area; this foe has a Fuel Canister above it. After passing this Kritter, the moving platform carries the duo to the east, where they can find another black platform that falls when they land on it. Soon after this, the heroes come up to a platform hanging between two Neckys. A Fuel Canister floats above the second Necky. The moving platform then leads the primates towards a Fuel Canister found high in the air. It can be reached with the use of a Blast Barrel hidden at the lower part of the area. After passing the barrel, the platform makes a stop next to a few hanging platforms with a villainous Kritter on one of them. The level's Continue Barrel is located on one of the platforms.

Another mobile platform can be seen nearby that begins to move along the track once activated. It leads them straight towards a DK Barrel with a tire to the right of it. A Fuel Canister positioned high in the air can be reached with the bouncy object. Neckys can be found ahead with hanging scaffolds after them; a tire stands on each of the platforms. The Kongs can find a Fuel Canister just ahead. After passing the barrel, the mobile platform follows a pathway farther down the area, where a Zinger can be found between a tire and another Fuel Canister. Another Fuel Canister is just ahead of here in the center of two Zingers. They can reach both barrels with a tire. Soon, the fuel-powered platform rises along a vertical path and then moves east under a hanging scaffold and a tire. Larger hanging scaffolds are ahead with a tire and a pair of Gnawties placed on them. The tire can be rolled along the two platforms to help the heroes reach a Fuel Canister that they can bounce to.

The primates are then lead back downwards towards a Blast Barrel that can shoot them to a DK Barrel and another Fuel Canister. If the heroes manage to travel farther, they come up to a long scaffold holding two Gnawties. The fuel-powered platform moves under this platform, coming up to the letter N on the way. A pair of Zingers follow the scaffold with a Fuel Canister between them. Once the moving platform passes these wasps, it pulls the duo up to a Barrel Cannon with a Blast Barrel to the upper-right of it. They blast the heroes into a Banana Bunch and back onto the platform, which then guides them towards some Zingers. The first Zinger is found alone, but the next two are piled on top of each other. At this point, the mobile platform begins to drain fuel faster and gain less fuel for the barrels. Once they jump over the enemies, the primates are led farther down to a Fuel Canister with another pair of Zingers around it.

The heroes must jump between the wasps to grab the barrel and avoid the foes. The moving platform then leads the Kongs upwards towards two more Zinger with a Fuel Canister above each of them. The next Fuel Canister is located ahead in a higher part of the track, where a Zinger orbits it. A trio of Zingers are ahead with a Banana Bunch between all of them. The primates must maneuver over and under them to survive and reach a trail of bananas. After passing the trail, the moving platform slowly approaches a Fuel Canister, which has a scaffold hanging above it. If the Kongs continue through the area after the Fuel Canister, they come up to a trio of Zingers and then the letter G. If they jump to the scaffold, they can reach a Blast Barrel that shoots them away from the mobile platform and onto a safe set of scaffolds. The first scaffold here holds a sign indicating that the level is almost over. After climbing along two scaffolds following this, both carrying Gnawty enemies, they make their way onto a flat scaffold with an exit sign on it. Once the two friends pass the sign, they gain access to the next level, Manic Mincers.

Walkthrough

When you reach the first oil-powered platform, get on it, then ride it to the oil barrel, which you should jump on to give the platform you are on more fuel. After that, keep riding the platform, breaking all the oil barrels you come across. When you reach the "K" above a Necky that flies up and down, defeat the Necky and take the "K" by using the height you gained after defeating it.

Once you get the "K," keep riding the platform, breaking all the oil barrels you come across. When you reach the "O" on a small platform to the right, get it, get back on the platform, and continue riding it, breaking the rest of the oil barrels you come across. When your platform starts slowing down, ignore the oil barrel you come across, since there's nowhere else for that platform to go.

Instead, jump to the platform to the east at that point, then keep going until you reach the Star Barrel (defeat the Kritter on one of the platforms before you reach the Star Barrel), which you should break. Now, get onto the new platform that you see, then ride it through more of the level, touching each oil barrel you come to, while avoiding falling off or being hit by the enemies. When you reach a platform with a tire on it, jump on that platform (the oil platform will still move under the tire platform, just hurry up).

Once on that platform, roll the tire to the east, defeating the Gnawties you come across. When you reach the edge of the platform, slow the tire pushing down a bit so that it doesn't fall off, then push it down onto the oil platform that comes near you, then jump onto that platform and bounce off the tire and break the oil barrel you come across to gain more fuel. Once you do that, keep riding the platform, collecting oil as you go.

When you reach the "N" floating below a wooden platform with Gnawties on it, ignore the platform for and Roll Jump to get the "N," then quickly jump onto the wooden platform where the Gnawties are. Then, go right a bit and break the oil barrel that the Zinger is circling around (while avoiding the Zinger). After breaking the oil barrel, get back on the oil-powered platform and continue your progress through the level.

Avoid all of the Zinger enemies you come across by jumping over them (be very careful though, since it is hard to jump over them without losing a kong; you have to time each one of your jumps right or you will fail), and also collect all of the oil barrels you come across to get more fuel for the oil platform. When you get to a platform with a Launcher Barrel above it, and your oil- powered platform starts to slow down, ignore the Launcher Barrel and grab the oil barrel instead.

After getting more fuel, keep riding the platform across the remainder of the level, jumping over the three Zingers you come across, but time your jumps VERY carefully, or you will lose a kong or die if you have only one kong. Once you pass the three Zingers, grab the "G," then continue to the end of the track on your oil-powered platform. When you reach the end of the track, jump to the nearby platform.

Then, simply jump from platform to platform till you reach the exit, though be sure to defeat the Gnawty enemies that try to ambush you, since they can make you lose a life right here after all of your hard work, which can be very frustrating. Once you reach the exit, use it.

K-O-N-G Letters

The K hovers above the second Necky, which flies up and down under it.

Shortly after the K, there are two down arrow platforms, which a 5-unit Fuel Canister floats between. The Kongs must pass a Necky and then ascend past two Kritters. The O is directly over the lower Kritter to the right.

The N is directly under a hanging platform just after the third DK Barrel.

Near the end of the level, the Kongs must ride past several Zingers. If they skip the Blast Barrel shortcut, they can collect the G, which is hovering over the last Zinger.

Bonus Room

Stop the Barrel! When the Kongs start to ride a platform, they must continue until the line goes up. They can jump down into a Bonus Barrel directly below. In the Bonus Level, the Kongs must observe a Life Balloon move between four barrels until it eventually stops. The Kongs must jump at the barrel that it stopped in to win the Life Balloon. They are then sent back into the main level.

2. Manic Mincers, Chimp Caverns

Donkey Kong Country Chimp Caverns - 2. Manic Mincers Map.

It is a cave stage. The main obstacles here are Mincers. Most of them spin at the same place, but others will move around at regular patterns, requiring good timing when jumping in order to the Kongs to avoid contact with them, specially above pits. Early into the stage, Rambi the Rhinoceros can be found inside an Animal Crate, however, the Animal Buddy can also be harmed by the Mincers. The only enemies found here are Gnawties and regular Krushas.

Overview

In Trick Track Trek, which is one of the longer levels, Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong must ride a platform on a rail from start to end. The platform begins to move when the Kongs jump on it. Upon reaching the end of a rail, the platform falls down, although this is not the case for the Japanese Super Famicom version. There are a few boardwalks that the Kongs can move across along the way. While the Kongs are on the platform, they must avoid several Neckys, Mini-Neckys, and Zingers. The platform automatically slows down if the Kongs encounter a Mini-Necky on the track, or if a perched Necky throws nuts at them from above. During the second half, enemies such as Gnawties and Kritters walk down from a boardwalk and onto the moving platform with the Kongs, attempting to knock them off track. A purple Klaptrap is introduced in this level, though it only appears in a Bonus Level.

Manic Mincers is a cave level that feature several Mincers as the main obstacle, as its name suggests. Each Mincer moves in a different pattern, either horizontal, vertical, or clockwise. Some of them do not move at all. Early in the level, Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong can release Rambi the Rhino from his animal crate to ride him for the rest of the level. Rambi cannot defeat the Mincers, because if he hits one, he runs away. Rambi can help the Kongs access a few Bonus Levels. A few Krushas are in the level, and Gnawties are the most common enemy of the level. In the original Super Nintendo version, the lighting subtly changes; for instance, it gets slightly darker just before the Rambi Crate but lighter after the letter O.

Layout

At the start of the stage, Donkey and Diddy Kong must advance past a Gnawty, then jump over a Mincer in an abyss. Then they pass under another mincer, while carrying a DK Barrel, which they defeat another Gnawty with. They must next collect the Letter K next to the wall, and carefully jump under the next Mincer, then the next after that over another abyss. Afterwards, the Kongs must break a crate containing Rambi inside of it and ride on him throughout the level. However, he can still get hurt by the Mincers, so carefully jump in between the two of them. After passing them, take out two passing Gnawties on the following path, then pass under another floating Mincer, and another. The Letter O is found above the next Mincer, in between the descending Mincer. The same gimmick is done with a Banana Bunch, but the two mincers have swapped places.

The following pathway has a pattern with one Mincer, and a Gnawty, until one Mincer moves left and right, and the Kongs collect a line of four bananas, and they finally reach the Star Barrel. There is a TNT Barrel next to you, and a circling and stationary Mincer. Grab the barrel to take out the Krusha up ahead, then grab the DK Barrel. There are two circling Mincers above an abyss. Carefully jump in between them, and use DK to defeat the Krusha down below. Use the DK Barrel to open a hole in the wall, leading to a Bonus Level where the Kongs have to jump on 3 moving Klap Traps. After winning the bonus level, proceed to encounter three circling Mincers, and a Banana Bunch in the middle.

After passing that, the Kongs reach a long abyss, a small moving platform, and another Mincer. The next path has another TNT Barrel, which can again take out the Krusha. There is another moving platform over an abyss, where you can find the Letter N. This time, there are two Mincers, making jumping harder. There is another DK Barrel on the following path, but it's optional. There is a stationary platform, but a Mincer circling it. Make your jump quick, then you will meet another Krusha, and another one. use DK or the DK Barrel to get ride of the foes. There will later be another stationary platform, with two circling Mincers.

The next path has three Gnawties to defeat, then the exit sign is found, but also a fast moving Mincer. Carefully get past, the Mincer and jump over the stationary Mincer, then proceed to find a different platform, with a hole in the wall. Enter it to get inside of a special room with three fast moving Mincers, and the Letter G. After exiting this tough room, you will find a TNT Barrel right next to you, and another DK Barrel to your left. Jump off the edge and walk on a long path to get to a small wall and make a hole in it to get to the next Bonus Room; a Slot minigame. If you ingore the Bonus Level, you have to use the tire to jump over the verical wall of two mincers, but if you enter the Bonus Room, you will get blasted out of the other side, sparing you from a difficult fate. Simply walk left and exit the level.

A Gnawty and a small pit containing a Mincer can be found at the level's entrance. Two more Mincers are ahead, moving in vertical paths. The level's first DK Barrel wobbles immediately before them, and a Gnawty walks between them. A small wall with the letter K next to it is located near the second Mincer in this area, which has a small pit in it. A Mincer floats in and out of the abyss. An animal crate containing Rambi the Rhino sits near here by a pit consisting of two moving Mincers that are always parallel to each other. The primates can find a few Gnawties marching down the area after the abyss, being followed by two higher pieces of land with Mincers on the edge of them. Another Gnawty can be found before a pair of Mincers on the highest piece of land. In this Mincer group, one stationary Mincer sits on the ground with the letter O over it, while the other Mincer moves up and down above it. Another pair of Mincers are ahead that move in the same pattern, except this time the top Mincer is stationary while the other moves. Four more stationary Mincers grind against the ground after this, and a fifth Mincer travels between the last two of the obstacles. The level's Continue Barrel can be found shortly after the last Mincer in this area.

,p>A TNT Drum can be found immediately after the barrel, along with two Mincers; one of these Mincers are stationary, while the other orbits around it at a quick pace. The heroes can find a DK Barrel on a raised piece of land after they pass a Krusha. Two additional Mincers moving in a circular path are ahead above an abyss that is followed by a barrel and an alcove containing a Krusha. Three more Mincers can be found ahead, each traveling in a circular patten around a Banana Bunch. The primates can find a wide abyss ahead of here with a Mincer grinding in the center of it. A small platform hovers across the whole pit to help the heroes cross it. A TNT Drum and another Krusha can be found on the opposite side of this pit, followed by a second wide abyss with another moving platform in it. As it pulls them over the abyss, they are taken past two Mincers and the letter N.

,p>A DK Barrel shakes on the other side of the pit, and it can be broken to free a lost partner. A Mincer orbits a small platform floating in an abyss nearby, which is followed by a lone piece of land with a pair of Krushas on it. Another abyss after this area contains a small platform used to cross it. Two sharp Mincers surround it. Once the heroes cross the pit, they come towards a few Gnawties and a sign indicating that the level is almost over on a straight pathway. A stationary Mincer with another Mincer speeding around it can be found nearby, being followed by a group of high ledges. Gnawties march along a pathway that leads farther into the level in front of the ledges. Using a small cave (leading to a Bonus Level) around this area, the primates can access the top of the high pieces of land, where a DK Barrel and a TNT Barrel wait. The primates' path is soon blocked by a wall created by two Mincers stacked on top of each other, which can be jumped over with the use of a tire sticking out of the ground next to them. An exit sign stands on the other side of the obstacles with a tunnel ahead of them that leads out of the level.

Walkthrough

defeat the nearby Gnawty, then advance through the level, avoiding all Mincers that you come across. When you reach the "K" floating above a cliff, grab it, then continue on through the level, and, as always, avoid the Mincers you come across. Eventually, you will reach an Animal Buddy Box that happens to contain Rambi. Break the box, mount Rambi, and continue your trek through the level, defeating the Gnawties you come across, as well as avoiding all the Mincers you come across, by whatever means necessary.

Eventually, you will reach the "O," so grab it and continue on, jumping between the two Mincers you come across. After you do that, continue progression through the level, avoiding all the Mincers you come across until you reach a TNT Barrel near two Mincers (one circles around, while the other just sits there). At that point, move past the two Mincers when the spinning one moves out of the way, then continue on.

Eventually, you will come across two Mincers spinning around above a cliff. Jump between them when you can, then continue on through the level, defeating the Krusha you come across below the platform that you were on after jumping between the two Mincers above the cliff. After defeating the Krusha, continue on and you will come across more Mincers, which you should avoid. When you reach a small moving platform with a Mincer in the center of the area, jump on the platform when it comes to you.

Then, jump over the Mincer when you come to it, then jump to the platform to the other side when you reach it. On that platform, take the TNT Barrel and defeat the Krusha that's nearby, then continue on. When you come to another small moving platform with Mincers in the area, jump on that platform, quickly jump up and get the "N," then jump back onto the platform when you can. Then, jump to the platform at the other side, while avoiding the Mincers.

Once you reach the other side, keep going and use the DK Barrel that you come across after that moving platform with the Mincers guarding it if you need it, but either way, continue onward, avoiding the Mincers you come across. When you reach a huge mountain with a cave entrance on it (actually, two but the easternmost one is unreachable for now), as well as some Gnawties in the area, jump onto the platform and enter the leftmost cave entrance.

Inside, you will see several Mincers that move up and down at very high speeds. If they hit you once, you exit this sort of bonus area, and are carried back to the Gnawty area. Anyway, run through this room, running under the Mincers when they move up. When you reach the other side of the room, take the "G," then exit this area. Back outside, jump down to the area below, then continue out of this level completely, avoiding the Mincers you come across.

K-O-N-G Letters
  • The K is against a wall, which the third Mincer of the level moves over vertically.
  • The O is between two Mincers shortly after the Rambi Crate.
  • After crossing the first abyss with a moving platform, the Kongs pass the third Krusha from the Continue Barrel. From the next moving platform above an abyss, the Kongs must jump up to the N.
  • The G is in the room with the fast moving Mincers when you get past them.
Bonus Rooms

Bash the Baddies! Past the Continue Barrel, there is a barrel next to a small alcove with the second Krusha. They can either defeat Krusha and then pick up the barrel to blast away the wall to the right of it, or they can break the right wall. The opening leads into the first Bonus Level. There, the Kongs must jump from three Klaptraps to earn many Banana Bunches. After jumping on each Klaptrap three times, the Kongs are rewarded a Life Balloon.

Find the Exit! After the arrow sign indicating a nearby exit, the Kongs must pass two Mincers and then enter an opening from a small platform to access the Bonus Level. Inside, the Kongs must sneak under vertically-moving three Mincers (four in the Game Boy Advance remake). The letter G is at the end, followed by the exit. In the original SNES version, this Bonus Level differs from others because it is not required to complete the game, nor does the Bonus Room Blitz theme play in the area. These distinctions are not present in remakes.

Stop the Barrel! After exiting the second Bonus Level, the Kongs must pick up a TNT Drum. They must pick up the barrel and carry it down a ledge. They must avoid hitting the Gnawties and blast away a wall to the left of two vertical Mincers to enter the third and last Bonus Level. Alternatively, they can use Rambi to break down the wall. In the Bonus Level, the Kongs must observe a Life Balloon as it moves between four barrels before it stops and disappears. The Kongs must jump at the barrel that the Life Balloon stopped in to be awarded it. The Kongs return into the main level after either winning or losing.

3. Misty Mine, Chimp Caverns

Donkey Kong Country Chimp Caverns - 3. Misty Mine Map.

As per the name, Misty Mine takes places inside a mine. Across the stage, there are many Oil Drums, with each of them summoning an unlimited number of the same enemy types at regular intervals. After the primates approaching and stepping on some of these drums floating in the air, they can be used as safe platforms. And some TNT Barrels can be throw at the Oil Drums in order to destroy them and reach some collectables. Traversal over wide pits is made by the heroes climbing on moving, vertical ropes. An Animal Crate containing Expresso the Ostrich is located at the end of the first Bonus Room of the stage. Enemies being summoned by Oil Drums inside the location are Slippas, Gnawties, Klaptraps and Armies.

Taking place, as its name suggests, in a misty mine, this stage is littered with many enemy-generating Oil Drums. These enemies include Slippas at the beginning of the stage, and then Gnawties, Klaptraps, and Armies. The stage's mist effect also makes the area a little less clear and harder for the Kongs to see. One of this stage's most unique features is the placement of its K-O-N-G Letters. Each letter is hidden near the other, all put into the first Bonus Stage of Misty Mine. If the primates are able to find this Bonus Stage, they also meet Expresso the Ostrich, who helps them progress through the stage. This location has the same music and tiles as Stop & Go Station.

Layout

The Kongs begin the level next to a TNT Drum with a Slippa-producing black drum ahead of it. After they pass the obstacle and the snakes it shoots at them, they can find a DK Barrel on a higher piece of ground with another Slippa-shooting black drum at the end of it near a second raised piece of land. An alcove with a rope dangling above it is nearby. The primates must use the rope to swing over the alcove, which contains a TNT Drum and a black drum that spawns Gnawties. Two more black drums that release Slippas are ahead, and a wide alcove and a TNT Drum are located between them. Another TNT Drum stands on the edge of a ledge just before a black drum that creates more Slippas. If the primates progress down a small ledge, they can find a black drum above a small gap containing a Rambi Token. Another black drum stands nearby on the edge of a cliff that can be crossed with a straight rope that begins to move to the right when touched. On the opposite side of this abyss, they can find a black drum that shoots Slippas and then a DK Barrel and a TNT Drum next to each other on the edge of a ledge. Two more black drums releasing Slippas stand ahead on the end of long strips of land. The Kongs can find a large pit immediately after the second black drum. After using two ropes to cross the abyss, they duo reaches a long pathway holding a Slippa-shooting black drum and the level's Continue Barrel.

After the primates pass two Slippa-releasing black drums, they encounter a wide abyss containing a long, straight rope that begins to pull them over it once it is grabbed onto. As the primates glide over the pit, they are brought towards a group of bananas in a V shape and a DK Barrel. A block drum sits on the other side of the abyss, shooting more Slippa enemies. Several Gnawties march along a long pathway ahead of here, being spawned by a black drum. After climbing up two stair-like structures, the two friends approach a black drum located next to a small abyss with another black drum, which releases Klaptraps, following it. An Expresso Token floats above the enemies. The next black drum, shooting more Klaptraps, can be discovered in a large alcove that also contains a bouncy tire sticking out of the ground. A TNT Drum stands on the edge of the alcove that can be used to destroy a Klaptrap-shooting black drum placed farther ahead. Once the duo passes over a small, empty alcove near here, they encounter another two black drums that spawn Klaptraps.

A DK Barrel wobbles above another Klaptrap-shooting black drum found ahead, which is followed by an abyss containing a floating black drum releasing the same enemies. With the use of this black drum, the two friends can cross the pit and access a higher area supporting another black drum that releases Armies. After passing a wide alcove, the primates reach another black drum that shoots Klaptraps. They can find another alcove next to this that is followed by a black drum that spawns Armies. An abyss is immediately after this obstacle, and once they cross it, they can discover four more Slippa-shooting black drums, each being placed in the ground. Once the Kongs continue past the drums, they approach a trail of bananas and then an Exit sign with the level's outlet beyond it. After completing the level, the Kongs can access Funky's Flights and the next level.

Once the Kongs continue past the drums, they approach a trail of bananas and then an exit sign with the stage's outlet beyond it.

K-O-N-G Letters
  • The K can be collected if the Kongs stay at the top of the rope.
  • The O by sliding to the bottom of the rope.
  • The N can then be collected by climbing back to the top of the rope.
  • The G can be collected by sliding to the bottom of the rope.
Bonus Stages

Find the Exit! After passing the Continue Barrel, the Kongs must grab a long rope and travel to the bottom of it. The rope stops next to a ledge with an opening which leads into the first Bonus Level. There, the Kongs must ride a rope and climb up and down the rope to collect the K-O-N-G Letters and follow a trail of bananas that are arranged in a circle shape. The rope stops at a small ground platform with an Expresso Crate and the level exit. The Bonus Level can be re-entered more than once.

Stop the Barrel! Shortly after completing the first Bonus Barrel, the Kongs find a TNT Drum just before a black drum which spawns Klaptraps. The Kongs must jump over the Klaptraps and the black drum and carry the TNT Drum into the right wall of a small alcove shortly after. In the Bonus Level, there are three barrels which alternate between each four types of Kong Tokens. By matching the animal token on each barrel, the Kongs are awarded that animal token. They return into the main level after either winning or losing the challenge.

4. Loopy Lights, Chimp Caverns

Donkey Kong Country Chimp Caverns - 4. Loopy Lights Map.

It is the second mine stage of this world, and the final one of the same type in the game. After a few seconds, the lights in the location will go off, making the screen very dim. By touching On & Off Barrels located through the stage, the primates will turn on the lights again temporarily. The effects of some of these barrels will last longer. The stage features unique variants of Klaptraps capable of walking forward and jumping. They will jump as soon as the player presses the "Jump" button. There are also some bouncing Tires to reach On & Off Barrels in high places or move over pits. Other enemies present in the stage are leaping Kritters, Zingers and some Manky Kongs.

Overview

Taking place in a mine, this level is similar to Stop & Go Station, another mine level, as the Kongs have to hit barrel switches to keep the lights on in both of them. This time, however, Rockkrocs, enemies found in the first mine level, are not present, and the lights have to be kept on simply so that Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong can see. Throughout the whole level, the mine shaft's lights are turned off, so they have to hit 'Off' barrels to put them back on for a short period of time, or otherwise not be able to surpass the hazards found in the area with a clear view. The job is not made easier here either due to the wandering Kritters and Zingers blocking the way, as well as the jumping purple Klaptraps. There is also a Manky Kong at the end of the level blocking the Kongs' progress.

The level takes place in a mine. It is similar to Stop & Go Station because it features barrels that affect the environment of the level, in this case, On & Off Barrels, which affect the lighting. By default, the barrels are set to 'Off', which makes the whole area dark. This effect is similar to Blackout Basement, although in Loopy Lights, the enemies' eyes remain visible. Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong can jump at the barrels to temporarily turn on the lights, allowing them to see the path ahead. The Kongs must avoid Kritters and Zingers along the way and jumping Klaptraps. There is also a Manky Kong at the end. In the Game Boy Color and the Game Boy Advance remakes, while dark, the level is far more visible than in the original version.

Layout

When the level begins, the Kongs find themselves under a barrel switch that displays the word, "Off." If they hit it, the lights turn on, putting a purple Klaptrap near a ledge in view. Another barrel switch can be found on the top of the ledge just before a small pit with the third barrel switch on the other side of it. As the Kongs approach a DK Barrel near here, a purple Klaptrap marches towards them. They find another one of these Klaptraps shortly after here next to another barrel switch that can be used to illuminate the area for a limited amount on time. The primates can find a pit containing a moving platform ahead. They can use the platform to cross and access an area with another purple Klaptrap and a barrel switch.

Another wide abyss is ahead, but the Kongs can cross it with the aid of two small platforms that move across it. On the other side of the pit, they can find a barrel switch and a purple Klaptrap, who is followed by a smaller abyss containing a stationary platform with a tire sticking out of it. The Kongs encounter two more purple Klaptraps on the opposite end of the pit, and a tire sits between them, which can help the two primates bounce to a barrel switch high in the air. Six small platforms float in an abyss near here. The primates can use the stationary platforms to cross the wide pit and access an area containing a barrel switch on a high piece of ground. Purple Klaptraps march nearby at a lower elevation, which is followed by a small pit with another barrel switch above it. Several large, solid platforms stand ahead of here. The first of the platforms holds a group of bananas, while the letter O can be found between the second and third platforms. A few purple Klaptraps also travel through this area, which is followed by a long pathway leading to a barrel switch and the level's Continue Barrel.

A barrel switch is placed immediately after here that can be hit to activate the lights again, as hitting all other barrel switches in the level does. After dropping down a small ledge near here, the primates encounter a Kritter hopping over a small alcove in the ground, which contains a DK Barrel. A raised piece of ground with a tire and a Kritter on it can be discovered next to a nearby barrel switch. The heroes can push the tire under another barrel switch found high in the air and then bounce on it to reach the most recently discovered switch. An abyss is ahead that can be crossed with the assistance of a small, moving platform that hovers back and forth over the whole pit. The primates can find a couple of purple Klaptraps in the area ahead of here, which also contains another barrel switch that floats near a small pit. On the other side of this abyss, the Kongs can find many small ledges that they must climb to reach the top of a pyramid-like structure.

At the top of this area, a Necky on a barrel switch can be found, along with a simple barrel that can be used to defeat enemies or open secret areas. Several more ledges that lead to the bottom of the pyramid-like structure are ahead, and a small pit is at the bottom of them. The heroes can find a barrel switch and a raised piece of land with a purple Klaptrap on it on the opposite side of this pit. More purple Klaptraps march near the next barrel switch, which is followed by an abyss that can only be crossed with the aid of two small platforms in it that move back and forth in a vertical path. A Kritter can be found on the other side of the pit near another barrel switch. Four tires are located after here in a wide abyss, each with a tire on it. Using the platforms, they can cross in order to access an area containing a high piece of land with a barrel switch at the end of it.

The duo can find a long pathway ahead of here consisting of a great extent of Zingers that float in place and move. The letter G is located behind one of the Zingers, who is followed by two more of the wasp enemies and a barrel switch. After crossing a small pit that follows this area of Zingers, the primates can find a sign that indicates that the level is near complete and several small ledges. Several barrels being thrown by a Manky Kong found ahead roll down the ledges as the heroes climb them. They meet the Manky Kong under a barrel switch at the highest ledge, which is followed by a small pit. When the Kongs cross it, they land on a raised piece of land with another barrel switch in front of it. Once the Kongs drop down the raised piece of ground and travel slightly farther into the level, they come up to an exit sign and a small tunnel that leads out of the level. A purple Klaptrap guards the exit.

Walkthrough

This level is very similiar to Stop & Go Station all the way back in World 2 (Monkey Mines), in the sense that there are ON/OFF barrels you have to use throughout the level in order to get through the level alive. Anyway, at the start, hit the ON/OFF barrel, defeat the Klaptrap (be careful, since the Klaptraps in this level jump at you as you jump at them), then continue through the level, jumping down the first gap you come across to get into a hidden bonus room.

In that bonus room, blast from barrel to barrel until you reach the "K," which you should get. After exiting the bonus, advance through the level even more, hitting each ON/OFF barrel you come across. When you reach a DK Barrel, break it if you need it (defeat the Klaptrap along the way), but either way, continue onward, defeating the enemies you come across and activating any ON/OFF barrels you come across, and also jumping across the small moving platforms above the cliffs that you come across.

Eventually, you will come to the letter "O," which you should get, via the use of a Roll Jump. After you get the "O," continue your progress through this level, defeating each Klaptrap enemy you come across, as well as activating any ON/OFF barrels you come across (be sure they all stay at "ON"). When you reach the Star Barrel, break it and continue on, activating the ON/OFF barrels you come to.

defeat the jumping Kremling you come across after the Star Barrel, then keep going, activating the ON/OFF barrels you come across. When you reach a tire (be sure to defeat the jumping Kremling that's guarding the tire before you start to pushi t), push it to the right until you are below another ON/OFF barrel. You should bounce off that tire and activate the ON/OFF barrel above you.

After doing that, continue progression through the level, defeating the Klaptraps you come across, as well as activating all of the ON/OFF barrels you come to. When you reach a Necky throwing nuts at you from atop an ON/OFF barrel, dispatch the Necky, then activate that barrel. Now, pick up the nearby barrel (the one below the ON/OFF barrel), then continue to the platform to the east (you reach it after jumping across a gap).

There, dispatch the Klaptrap after sitting the barrel down, then activate the ON/OFF barrel that's nearby, then pick the barrel back up and slam it into the east wall in the pit below to reveal a bonus, which you should go inside. In this bonus, jump from platform to platform in the dark room, being sure to get the "N" when you come to it, via Roll Jumping. After exiting the bonus, keep going through the level, defeating the Klaptraps and Kremlings you come across, as well as activating any and all ON/OFF barrels you come across.

When you reach a segment where you have to jump across four tires on small platforms floating above a cliff below you, do just that and jump across the four tires to the other side. After jumping to the other side, continue your progression through the level, and you will come across an area with a lot of Zingers guarding ON/OFF barrels. When you come to that, activate the ON/OFF barrel you come to, then advance further in that segment, activating the next ON/OFF barrel you come to (though beware of the Zinger that flies up and down and guards the ON/OFF barrel).

After activating that barrel, continue through the remainder of the level, avoiding the barrels the Manky Kong rolls down the slopy stair-like platforms in an attempt to defeat you. When you reach the Manky Kong, jump on it, activate the ON/OFF barrel that it was guarding, then continue onward through the rest of the level, defeating the Klaptrap enemies you come across, as well as being sure to activate the ON/OFF barrels you come across.

K-O-N-G Letters
  • The K is at the end of the first Bonus Level.
  • The O is located in a small gap shortly before the Continue Barrel and after a pair of Klaptraps. The Kongs can perform a roll jump to safely collect it.
  • The N is placed on the edge of the second platform in the second Bonus Level.
  • Near the end of the level, the Kongs encounter several Zingers. One of the Zingers flies vertically at the G.
Bonus Stages

Find the Exit. At the start, when the Kongs come up to the first pit, they must jump down to a banana in the pit to land in a Bonus Barrel. The Bonus Level is similar to the first one of Barrel Cannon Canyon except with an On & Off Barrel at the start; the Kongs must blast between some Barrel Cannons, and collect a few bananas and two Banana Bunches on the way. The letter K is between the last two Barrel Cannons. The Kongs can exit the Bonus Level by either falling into the pit or exiting from the opening on the rightmost platform.

Find the Exit. Shortly after the Continue Barrel, the Kongs encounter three bouncing Klaptraps. Afterward, they must go up some stairs to encounter a perched Necky over an On & Off Barrel. The Kongs must pick up the barrel and run down a few more stairs while avoiding the nuts thrown by the Necky. The Kongs must jump over a small gap and put down the barrel under an On & Off Barrel. They must then jump on a nearby bouncing Klaptrap, then go back to the barrel, pick it up, and run it into the wall to make an opening into the second Bonus Level.

In the Bonus Level, the Kongs must jump at an On & Off Barrel to turn on the lights, and then they must jump from a few ground platforms until reaching the exit. An item is at the right edge of each platform, in order of a banana, a Banana Bunch, the letter N, an Expresso Token, and lastly a Life Balloon. The Kongs can reach the Life Balloon by bouncing from a half tire in the ground, which is also used to bounce up to the last platform which has a few bananas on the ground which lead to the exit.

5. Platform Perils, Chimp Caverns

Donkey Kong Country Chimp Caverns - 5. Platform Perils Map.

Platform Perils is the last regular stage of Chimp Caverns, as well as the last regular stage in the game. In the SFC/SNES and GBA versions, this walkway stage is the only one where the stronger variants of Krushas can be found, being defeated here only by the heroes throwing single Vine Barrels at them. The progress over pits is made by using arrow platforms. Soon after the Kongs stepping on them, these small platforms will move towards the single directions of the white arrows on them. The arrow platforms will fall off at the end of their short courses, usually, after reaching the location of the next ones which the primates must jump towards at. Some of these platforms are occupied by enemies, including stronger Krushas, which the heroes must defeat first in order to ride the arrow platforms. Armies, Klumps, Zingers and Gnawties are also common enemies in this stage.

In this walkway level, the Kongs face several challenges. The main obstacle here are the many black, moving platforms scattered all over the level. Each of these platforms has a white arrow painted on them, and wherever the arrow is pointing is where the platform moves upon being landed on. As a result, the heroes are able to navigate over many abysses with these platforms. The platforms are sometimes guarded by strong foes, namely Klumps and Krushas, and even when these enemies are not on the platforms, the Kongs must avoid standing on the platforms too long because the objects fall after they move for a short amount of time. Other enemies that attempt to attack the Kongs here are Zingers, Neckies, Gnawties, and Armies. Additionally, this is the only level to feature gray Krushas, besides Necky Nutmare, a level exclusive to the game's Game Boy Color version.

Summary

Platform Perils is a walkway level with several challenges. As the name suggests, Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong primarily traverse the level by moving on small arrow platforms, which previously appeared in Blackout Basement. The level exclusively features gray Krushas, whom can only be defeated by the Kongs throwing a barrel at them. (In the Game Boy Color remake, gray Krushas are also in Necky Nutmare.) The gray Krushas are usually on the arrow platforms, which the Kongs are required to use to proceed in the level. They can throw a nearby Vine Barrel at them to defeat them (or TNT Drums in the European version).

The first part of the level involves going across the walkways, with Armies and Klumps appearing along the way. Only a few DK Barrels are found along the path, so Donkey Kong is best used to handle these enemies. Later on, the rest of the level takes place on moving arrow platforms, most of them guarded by gray Krushas. After that is another section with a brief walkway with some Klumps. The last down arrow platform can be taken to reach an obscure Bonus Level at the end.

Layout

The Kongs begin the level on a set of long scaffolds that also support a barrel and a Krusha. A black platform floats in an abyss ahead that begins to pull them to a slanted platform when landed on. The primates are attacked by an Army as they walk up the pathway, which is followed by another scaffold that holds another Army, a barrel, and the level's first DK Barrel. Two black platforms float in an abyss immediately after here that can take them over and up to another set of scaffolds with a trio of Klumps on them. A trail of bananas to the right of the scaffolds with the letter K between them leads the heroes down to a black platform that can pull them back upwards. Two more black platforms are ahead, with a Zinger before each of them. The first platform carries them downwards, and then the second one carries them to a long scaffold after a Zinger. Another scaffold floats near here with a pair of Armies on it.

This is followed by a wide abyss that can be crossed with the help of a black platform that moves upwards when landed on. A small scaffold with two more black platforms next to it in another abyss is after this pit. A Zinger flies around both sides of the two platform, which both descend and then fall when touched. The primates can find two scaffolds holding some Armies ahead of here. An abyss follows the scaffolds, but it can be crossed with the use of a black platform that moves downwards when touched and a Necky that they can bounce on. On the other side of this pit, the duo can find two large scaffolds with a smaller one hanging above them that supports two Armies. An abyss nearby consists of four black platforms that move downwards when the heroes land on them, and several Zinger fly among each of them. After passing the abyss, the heroes reach a small scaffold holding a barrel that is followed by two groups of two scaffolds with Armies on them. A smaller, slanted scaffold hangs after these platforms, and it is followed by a black platform that pulls the heroes downwards to the letter O and another scaffold that hangs under the level's Continue Barrel, which is orbited by a Zinger.

After passing this barrel, the primates reach a large abyss that can be fully crossed with a black platform that moves to the east when landed on. As they ride along it, they travel under another black platform with a DK Barrel above it. This platform moves downwards when landed on. The primates soon make their way onto a small scaffold holding an Army. A trail of bananas next to here leads them down onto a black platform with a Gnawty on it. This platform pulls the two friends east past a Zinger who orbits the letter N. After the primates ride on another black platform that pulls them eastward nearby, they can reach a platform that carries them north, which supports a Gnawty. Another black platform with a Gnawty on it can be reached with the previous platform. It guides the heroes to another black platform holding a Gnawty. This platform pulls them to the east, where a Klump can be found walking on a black platform that falls when landed on by the Kongs. They can find a slanted scaffold immediately after the enemy with another Klump on it, who is followed by a tire sticking out of a smaller scaffold. It can bounce them to another scaffold holding a tire, which can then help them reach a wide abyss containing four black platforms that fall when landed on by the Kongs. Gnawties walk along each of them, and the primates can avoid making the platforms drop by bouncing on these foes. After crossing the abyss, the heroes reach a pair of scaffolds, both supporting a barrel, with a Zinger between them.

Another abyss follows the scaffolds, and the primates can only cross it with the use of a black platform, which is blocked by a gray Krusha, whom the Kongs can only defeat by hitting it with a barrel. On the small scaffold after this pit, a sign indicating that the level is almost over can be found. In another huge abyss to the right of here, a black platform that travels east when landed on can be discovered next to a Zinger. The platform pulls them past a trail of bananas onto another platform that leads them farther east once activated. The platform supports barrel, which must be used to defeat a gray Krusha blocking the next platform located nearby. This platform can guide the duo upwards to a tire, which can bounce them onto another platform that pulls them farther upwards when touched. A barrel sits on it, which must be used to defeat a gray Krusha standing on the next platform. Once the primates get on this platform, they are guided to the east again, where they find another platform holding a barrel.

A Zinger flies in front of the platform, which begins to pull them back downwards when landed on. Soon, the Kongs encounter another gray Krusha on a black platform that moves to the east when touched. The primates can use the previously mentioned barrel to defeat it and progress onto the platform, which leads them to another platform holding nothing but a barrel. This platform falls down when landed on, forcing the Kongs to continue on the previous platform. A Krusha stands on the next black platform, but once the primates defeat it, they can safely reach it to be taken towards a tire. This tire can help them get onto another platform that can pull them to the west, where the letter G and the next platform can be discovered. This platform, supporting a barrel, can be used to travel to the east, where a Gnawty can be found on a platform that descends when landed on. A long set of scaffolds are immediately after this enemy, leading the heroes past a Klump towards the level's exit sign. The outlet of the level is ahead of the sign.

K-O-N-G Letters
  • The K is found after passing the first group of Klumps, the primates drop onto a platform with the K above it.
  • The O can be found in a pit next to the final platform before the Star Barrel.
  • The primates find the N being circled by a Zinger as they travel along the second platform from the Star Barrel.
  • Near the end of the level, the Kongs can find the G above a black platform that pulls them eastwards towards the final black platform in the level.
Bonus Stages

pell it Out! When the Kongs land on the level's first moving platform, they must walk left and fall off. They can land on a hidden platform directly below where the first platform started. The hidden platform travels left to a hidden Bonus Barrel. In the Bonus Level, they need to hit four barrels displaying one of the four K-O-N-G Letters to spell out "KONG" in the correct order. If they do it correctly, they are given an Expresso Token or a Life Balloon. After either winning or losing, the Kongs return into the main level.

Stop the Barrel! On the very last platform, which has a Gnawty on it, the Kongs are taken downwards. Instead of jumping to the scaffolds to the right, the Kongs must continue down to find a hidden scaffold. They must jump on it and then off to the right to enter the second Bonus Barrel. In the final Bonus Level, the Kongs have to watch an Enguarde Token move through four barrels. Once it stops and disappears, the Kongs must jump at the barrel that it stopped on. If they choose the correct one, the Enguarde Token is released for the Kongs to collect. After either winning or losing, the Kongs are sent back into the main level.

6. Necky's Revenge, Chimp Caverns

This boss stage is also located nearby hoards of bananas, just like all the previous ones. Here, Donkey and Diddy Kong must face the boss Master Necky Snr., another giant vulture. In the SFC/SNES and GBC versions of the game, he will randomly reveal his head at the right or left side of the arena and at different heights. Master Necky Snr. will attack by spitting coconuts at the Kongs. The boss will become vulnerable only between finishing his current attack and before leaving the screen, allowing the primates to bounce on the tire at the middle of the arena in order to reach the top of Master Necky Snr.'s head and harm him. After each hit inflicted upon the boss, he will add single coconuts to his following attacks. However, in the GBA version, both Master Necky Snr. and Master Necky will be featured as bosses, appearing together during the battle. Initially, the former will show up at the right side of the arena, and the latter will appear at the left side. Master Necky Snr. will spit a single coconut at heroes first, and Master Necky will follow with another single one. Both bosses will be invulnerable before each of them attacking and just before leaving the screen. If Master Necky Snr. is harmed too soon, Master Necky will not attack. After one of the bosses is defeated first, the second one will be able to appear at both sides of the arena, and he will attack by always spitting four coconuts per time. Master Necky Snr. will be taken down after receiving a total of five hits in the SFC/SNES and GBC versions. In the GBA version, he and Master Necky will be defeated after each of them taking a total of five hits. In all game versions, the Kongs will also earn a Giant Banana.

Summary

His main attack and defeating method are similar to Master Necky. He will rear his head and launch a coconut, and the Kongs need to react quickly to avoid the projectile and jump on his head via spring. Before spitting all his coconuts each time, he appears, the boss will be temporarily invincible to jump attacks. After receiving a hit, he will launch one additional coconut in a row. Not being hit once, he will launch one; after receiving one hit, he will launch two coconuts, etc. Seeing how fast they are in succession, the coconuts are quite annoying to dodge, and players must work on timing to dodge by using the tire at the center of the arena. After receiving five hits, Master Necky Snr. will be defeated.
