Super Mario 64 Big Boo's Haunt layout. Super Mario 64 - Big Boo's Haunt - Big Boo's Haunt Entrance 1. Super Mario 64 - Big Boo's Haunt - Big Boo's HauntEntrance 2. Big Boo's Haunt is the fifth course in Super Mario 64 and is located in the Castle Courtyard. The course itself is a three-story mansion located in a small cage. To gain access to the level, the player must defeat the larger one of the Boos in the castle courtyard, then walk up to the small mansion in a cage that appears. Unlike most other courses, Big Boo's Haunt is one of the rare courses that is not accessed via a painting. Instead, Mario must travel to the castle's courtyard after he has collected twelve Power Stars and defeat a Big Boo. The Boo will drop a small cage containing the course. Mario gets teleported to Big Boo's Haunt upon entering this cage.

Mario shrinks as he is entering the cage to Big Boo's Haunt. The level is bounded by what appears to be the bars of a cage, like the one in the entrance to the course, suggesting, along with his entrance into the level, that Mario has shrunk. The course's background is a night sky located in a dark forest.

Big Boo's Haunt is inhabited by none other than Big Boo himself. There is a small shack on the side of the mansion that has a lift to the basement. In the center of the basement is a large merry-go-round with many Boos and some Flamethrowers. There is also the Mad Piano (a piano that comes to life and tries to bite Mario if he gets too close), Bookends (books which emerge from the bookshelves and launch themselves at Mario), and Killer Chairs (chairs which levitate before attacking). Big Boo's Haunt is also home to Big Mr. I. There are two entrances into the main building: the front door immediately visible upon entering the level, and a single back door that leads into a room containing two Boos. This course is one of a few that contain bridges made of bricks that fall away when walked upon. Big Boo's Haunt is the only course that does not share a theme with another course. The music for the Merry-Go-Round is also used in the minigames Lakitu Launch, Bingo Ball, and Slots Shot. In the DS remake, the third floor also contains a painting to the Big Boo Battle which appears to be located on the tower (highest floor) of Big Boo's Haunt where King Boo resides. This place is also where Mario unlocks Luigi.

Layout

Big Boo's Haunt takes place within the carousel. There are two buildings in the course: the main haunted house and a wooden shack off to the side. Around the haunted house are several Scuttle Bugs, and an entrance to a secret room with a couple of Boos is at the back of the haunted house.

The haunted house consists of three floors, though only the first floor is accessible during the first mission (unless the player has unlocked Luigi in the DS version, in which case the player can easily jump to the next floor). The rooms of the first floor consist of, from left to right, a room with the Mad Piano, a room with a library, a room with a dungeon, a room with a collapsing bridge, and a room with a black pit and some platforms. If the player falls into the pit, it will lead them to the merry-go-round underneath. Once all the Boos and the Big Boo on the first floor are defeated, a staircase to the second floor appears.

The second floor has the same number of rooms as the first, as well as the course's Star Marker. The second door from the left leads to a library with books flying out of the shelves, trying to attack the player. The end of the library leads to the first room from the left, which contains a Power Star. The third room has a wire-frame grate floor above the dungeon room, the fourth room has several caskets that rise when the player approaches them, and the fifth room contains a bookcase with Bookends and a large tilting platform that will drop the player into the merry-go-round if they stand on it for too long. The door in the back of the fifth room leads to a blue block (or red in the DS version), and a door above on a ledge leads to the third floor.

The third floor consists of a small hall with doors to the balcony and a secret room containing Big Mr. I. In the DS version, a Luigi painting that brings Mario to the Big Boo Battle stage is also present in the hall. To access the room with Big Mr. I., the player has to be Vanish Mario or Vanish Luigi and enter through the large picture of a Boo before the power wears off. On the balcony lies the Big Boo, and the player can long-jump from the platform to access the roof.

The shack on the grounds of the haunted house leads to an elevator that brings the player to large halls when stepped on. At the end of the halls is a room with water and a merry-go-round in the center, accessed by doors on either side. The merry-go-round has a large spinning platform in the center and several portraits of Boos. One of the portraits has actual Boos come out of it, and another acts like a flamethrower.

1. Go on a Ghost Hunt, Big Boo's Haunt

Layout

In order to collect this mission's Power Star, the player has to defeat the five Boos on the first floor followed by the Big Boo that appears after the other Boos are defeated. These are the locations of the five Boos:

  • Two are found either at the back entrance room or in the second door to the left. The player can use the nearby Vanish Cap in the room to enter through the portrait or wait for the Boos to approach the player.
  • One is found in the left room in the back.
  • One is found in the right room in the back.
  • One is found either in the door across the falling bridge or in the door to the right in the lobby.

Once the five Boos are defeated, the Big Boo appears in the lobby. The Big Boo acts like the other Boos, but it takes three hits to defeat him. Once the Big Boo is defeated, the Power Star appears on the second floor and a staircase rises, allowing the player to collect it.

During this mission only, whenever the player character defeats a Boo, it delivers the message "Ghosts...don't...DIE! Heh, heh, heh! Can you get out of here...alive?" After the last Boo is defeated, it sends a different message: "Boooooo-m! Here comes the master of mischief, the tower of terror, the Big Boo! Ka ha ha ha..."

Walkthrough

To complete this star Mario must enter the mansion and defeat the six Boos located on the ground floor of the mansion. Once this is done, the Big Boo appears in the mansion hall. Once Mario defeats the Big Boo, the stairs to the upper floor of the mansion are revealed, along with the star for the level located at the top of the stairs.

Go inside the large ghost house ahead of you. Inside, enter a lobby-type room with many doors surrounding it. Defeat five Boos that are scattered throughout the various rooms. Below are the three doors you should use in the lobby to find all the Boos. The position of each door is relative to Mario entering the lobby from the outside and facing the interior of the lobby.

Second Door on the Left - Library
Super Mario 64 - 1. Go on a Ghost Hunt - Big Boo's Haunt 1.

When you enter this room, furniture will float and fly at you. Dodge the furniture and jump on the large table. There is a painting of a Boo that is hiding his face. Turn your back to the painting, and two Boos will float out of it. Wait for them to get close and ground-pound them to take them out. After defeating the two Boos, return to the lobby.

Left Door on the Back Wall
Super Mario 64 - 1. Go on a Ghost Hunt - Big Boo's Haunt 2.

This room contains a single Boo. It also contains a large eyeball that shoots tears(?) at you. Defeat the Boo as quickly as possible and return to the lobby.

Right Door on the Back Wall
Super Mario 64 - 1. Go on a Ghost Hunt - Big Boo's Haunt 3.

When you enter this room, you will need to follow the floor toward the front. You will reach a bridge made of grey-colored blocks. These blocks will fall shortly after you step on them. Therefore, quickly run across the bridge to avoid falling down. After crossing the bridge, defeat the Boo on the other side; then, exit the room through the door next to you.

Super Mario 64 - 1. Go on a Ghost Hunt - Big Boo's Haunt 4.

The door opens to a curved room with a platform in the middle. Be careful of the gaps in the floor. Jump to the middle platform and defeat the Boo. Then, jump to the platform on the right and use that door to return to the lobby.

If you fall through the gaps in the curved room, you end up in the basement. In the basement, find the door that leads to the elevator and back outside the house to try again.

Fighting Big Boo
Super Mario 64 - 1. Go on a Ghost Hunt - Big Boo's Haunt 4.

Return to the main lobby after defeating all the Boos to face off against the Big Boo. He starts out moving very slowly, making your first strike exceptionally easy—just run behind him and punch him (or perform a slide attack by attacking while running at full speed). After hitting him the first time, Big Boo will chase after you faster. Again, circle around him until you can attack him from the rear and nail him with a jumping slide attack. He gets even faster after the second attack, but you can still outrun him. Attack him for the third time, and Big Boo will release the Power Star. Hop up the stairs to grab the star!

2. Ride Big Boo’s Merry-Go-Round, Big Boo's Haunt

Layout

To reach the merry-go-round from the start of the level, the player has to enter the shack to the left. In the first room are a Mr. I. and an elevator that takes the player down to a large water-filled hallway. Going down the hall and through the door leads to another hallway, and at the end of this hall is the door to the merry-go-round. After the player enters the merry-go-round through one of the doors on either side of it, Boos in pairs begin coming out of one of the portraits on the wall. The player has to defeat these Boos on a spinning platform while avoiding the flamethrower. Once all the Boos are defeated, a Big Boo appears. After the player attacks the Big Boo three times, the Power Star appears and the merry-go-round stops spinning.

Super Mario 64 - 2. Ride Big Boo’s Merry-Go-Round - Big Boo's Haunt 1.

Run around the paintings to lure out the Boos hiding inside. Stand in one of the non-moving alcoves of the room with your back to the Boos, and let them float to you. Jump and ground-pound them into submission; then, go around to lure out more Boos. There are five Boos to defeat in total—when all are gone, Big Boo will appear.

Super Mario 64 - 2. Ride Big Boo’s Merry-Go-Round - Big Boo's Haunt 2.

Once all the Boos are defeated, a Big Boo appears. After the player attacks the Big Boo three times, the Power Star appears and the merry-go-round stops spinning. You have to defeat Big Boo just like you did the last time, though it is a bit trickier in this environment. Find a part of the merry-go-round that is away from the fire-breather and circle around that small section to get in an attack on the Big Boo's rear. Hit Big Boo three times to defeat him and get the Power Star.

If you get low on health, you can always exit the room and jump into the water to revive yourself. If you do so, the fight will reset when you return to the merry-go-round –meaning, if you had hit Big Boo before, if you leave and come back, you will have to hit him three more times to defeat him).

3. Secret of the Haunted Books, Big Boo's Haunt

Layout

The player has to make their way up to the second floor of the haunted house, enter the second door from the left, and make their way to the end of the library. When the player walks through the library, several Bookends fly off the shelves and hurt the player character if they come into contact. At the end of the library is a bookcase blocking the path with three books popping out. The player has to hit these books in the correct order (top, bottom, center) in order for the bookcase to move. Inputting the wrong order has a Bookend attack the player, and the code resets. Behind the bookcase is a door leading to the Power Star.

In the original N64 version, the player can reach the Power Star through the room on the far left of the second floor if they time Mario's jumps correctly.

From the lobby, use the second door on the left to enter the library. The second and third coins are on top of two different bookshelves in this room. Stand with Mario’s back to the bookshelf; then, crouch and jump to do a backflip and reach the coin at the top of the bookshelf.

Super Mario 64 - 4. Seek the 8 Red Coins - Big Boo's Haunt 4.

From the lobby, use the first door on the right to enter the curved room with the hole in the center. Jump to the platform by the window to get this Red Coin; then, return to the door and exit back to the lobby.

Super Mario 64 - 4. Seek the 8 Red Coins - Big Boo's Haunt 5.

From the lobby, go up the steps to the second floor. Walk over to the left door on the back wall and use it to enter a room with a mesh walkway. The mesh walkway has large holes you can fall through. Watch your step. This Red Coin is on the innermost wall. Return to the top of the steps in the lobby.

Super Mario 64 - 4. Seek the 8 Red Coins - Big Boo's Haunt 6.

From the top of the steps on the second floor, walk to the wall on the right side of the lobby and use the only door on that wall to enter a room with a large bookshelf. Avoid the flying books and walk around the bookshelf to reach an empty part of the room. Stay close to the wall, as the middle part of the room contains a trick floor that will cause you to fall downstairs. Walk along the wall and pick up the Red Coin. Then, exit the room through the door you had entered — make sure to stay close to the wall to avoid the trick floor.

If you fall through the trick floor, you will end up in the basement. In the basement, find the door that leads to the elevator and back outside the house to try again.

Super Mario 64 - 4. Seek the 8 Red Coins - Big Boo's Haunt 7.

From the top of the steps on the second floor, walk over to the right door on the back wall and use it to enter a room with a large eyeball inside. Walk around the eyeball to discover the rest of the room containing coffins. Walk near the coffins to cause some of them to rise. Two of the coffins will each reveal one Red Coin. Be quick to get out of the way before the coffin falls back down.

Just past the bookshelf, there is a raised platform in the corner of the room. Jump on it and perform either a triple jump or a wall kick to reach the hidden floor above you. Then, use the door to enter the next area.

Super Mario 64 - 5. Big Boo’s Balcony - Big Boo's Haunt 4.

Inside the large room, use the double doors on the right to reach the balcony and confront the Big Boo. You have beaten the Big Boo twice already. This time will be no different, but the balcony is very small and there is no railing, so be cautious. Since the area is so small, defeating him can be a challenge.

Super Mario 64 - 5. Big Boo’s Balcony - Big Boo's Haunt 5.

The easiest way to take down the Big Boo is to stand facing away from him. As the Big Boo nears you, perform a couch jump and ground-pound the Boo as it floats under you. Hit him three times to defeat him.

The Power Star lands on the roof of the house. To get there, do a long jump from the balcony to get onto the roof of the house. Once you land, be careful not to slide off the roof. Keep moving and follow the slope of the roof as it curves around toward the center of the house, where you can pick up the Star.

    • Most enemies release blue coins which restore lots of health.
    • Most big drops have water at the bottom which cushions the fall.
    • Very few enemies in the course actually pursue Mario. The only ones that do are the haunted books, the haunted chairs, and piano.

    • This course is completely enclosed, similar to Bob-omb Battlefield.
    • There are no "instant death" obstacles.
