Several Bridges Too Far

1. Nijmegen Bridge, Several Bridges Too Far

Initial Equipment
  • Webley Silenced Pistol
  • Wire snippers
Acquired Equipment
  • MP40
  • Gewehr 43
Cut eight explosives under the bridge

The Nazi demo-squad is lightly armed relatively speaking and cannot muster too many people on you before you get the drop on them with sniper fire. Your true foes in this mission are the myriad number of machine gun nests so littered about the shattered landscape of the bridge. If you are not aware of the machine gun nests, you walk right up to them and die. This is why you want to use the Gewehr to sight forward occasionally and find out what is there before you walk up to it.

Kill the MP40 wielding soldier on the right before drilling the Mauser/Gewehr using soldier on the left. Pick up both weapons and be ready to switch between them for the better part of this stage. There are a pair of soldiers coming your way on the bridge's right side. Settle their hash and proceed slowly across the bridge. You come across your first machine gun nest soon enough. Drop the infantry near the nest gun and keep your scope there. If you think you can rush them without too much trouble after the nest gunner is killed, then by all means do so. If you do not want the gold rating, avoid manning the machine gun as this creates more enemies for you to fight.

Around the area of the first nest, you can find the entrance to the underwalk of the bridge. Head down there slowly and use your Gewehr to kill the first members of the demo-squad here. There will be explosives #1 and 2 for you to snip on this side of the bridge. As you cross to the other side, you are able to make out the silhouettes of the other team on the other side of the bridge. Again, explosives 3 and 4 can be snipped on the other side of the bridge. When you come back up to the bridge, you find that you have also circumvented the roadblock and are now past the first machine gun nest.

You come under immediate fire from the guard shack to the right. Secure the area and look for health items. You can head back to earlier spots on the bridge if you ignored a health item before. Proceed further down the bridge until you find the concrete "Dragons' Teeth" that litter the bridge. You come under fire from the tops of the bridge as you near the Dragons' Teeth, so use the concrete obstacles as hard cover. Return fire carefully to the snipers on top of the bridge. When all is quiet, proceed forward while on the right side of the bridge and look ahead. You find some soldiers loitering at the next two gun nests. Try not to fire and go in from the right side crouching. You need to climb up the ladder that leads up to the top of Nijmegen Bridge. As you head up, you should draw some fire, but keep climbing as the bridge trusses should shield most of the gunfire.

.

Remember you can fire your guns while on the ladder, so eliminate as many soldiers on the top of the bridge as you can. Once you get to the top of the bridge, clear the top and use the Gewehr to snipe the soldiers below. You find more Gewehr ammunition at the top, and two snipers midway up the bridge shooting at you. Crouch and stick to head shots. A fall this high kills Patterson. You can probably see both gun nests from this vantage point; use your Gewehr to vacate the guns so fresh meat can be added. You can eliminate platoons like this, and you should use up your Gewehr rounds. Once it is all quiet, you can head back down the same ladder you came up from. If there are any stray soldiers you have missed, they are lingering near the base of the ladder. Kill them from the safety of the ladder before reaching the ground.

When you do touch ground again, clean up the mess you made. Scarf up the ammo and health before you search for the underwalk entrance leading to the remainder of the demo-squad and explosives 5, 6, 7, and 8. The charges are laid out the same way as on the first underwalk, but the squad make up is different: you fight three or more soldiers at the first pair of charges, then a lone soldier at the second pair. Come up the underwalk and you face another guard station and another machine gun nest. Secure the area and move to the end of the bridge; you face three soldiers with automatic weapons. you are at the end of the bridge near where the A.A. station is placed, but you need to get past yet another small squad of soldiers before you get there. There are three soldiers smoking down by the exit ramp from the bridge to the highway.

Destroy the A.A. gun emplacment - plus - Hijack the medical truck

The A.A. unit fires on some P-38 Lightnings as you get close, but you should really pay attention to the metal access door that is to the road's left; it opens as you near the emplacement and some guards may see you. Blast the soldiers who come pouring out and you should do fine. The A.A. gun is to the right, and the exit and medical truck is to the left. The A.A. gun is guarded by a four man unit, so if you can crouch, inch out and blast the red explosive drum with a full burst from the MP40, you can eliminate the whole unit and the gun with two shots. When you are done with the gun, head to the exit tunnel, but be ready to stop halfway down and retreat up the tunnel. If you do this correctly, you can leave the A.A. gun bunker and turn right at the entrance. You should see the truck you need to hijack, as well as any guards you may have spawned by going halfway down the exit tunnel. If you do not see anyone, try going farther down the tunnel before you try to get the drop on them again by back tracking outside. Once those last two soldiers are killed, you can steal the truck with ease.

2. Yard By Yard, Several Bridges Too Far

Initial Equipment
  • Webley Silenced Pistol
  • Gewehr 43
  • MP40
Acquired Equipment
  • Shotgun
  • Mark II Fragmentaion Grenades
Clear out four Nazi checkpoints - plus - Destroy two Panzers
Checkpoint #1

This mission sees the truck you stole from the last mission handed over to a Dutch driver. Your new task is to blast the four gun nest checkpoints and let the truck through as well as reach central Arnhem to join some British Airborne units. The first gun nest is across the street and inside the house. Open the door and head upstairs, using only your silenced Webley to kill the soldier manning the upper machine gun. Instead of the machine gun, switch to your Gewehr rifle if you did not alert the guards below. Inch out and see if you can shoot the soldier on the street by the street level machine gun. That should kill half the checkpoint's squad and clear the way for the truck. The rest of the squad can be terminated (with extreme prejudice) using the MP40 and some decent strafing.

Checkpoint #2

Head down the street and into the alley. The alley leads into the backyard of an occupied house. The second checkpoint is outside that occupied house, but you need to head upstairs. The next room needs you to go through the small access hatch to reach the upper gun. Once there, you should eliminate the gunner and try out the Gewehr again if you did not draw any fire. You should man the machine gun in a pinch if you alert the enemy at the second checkpoint, so you can kill the soldiers quickly. Afterward, you head down stairs and make your way into yet another backyard.

Checkpoint#3

From the back yard of the house (this should be the house you entered via secret tunnel from the house after clering checkpoint two), you head out into the street. Near where the Gestapo officer is a soldier slapping the civvie, there is an entrance to the next block's easement (alley). Although you can head down the street, there is a machine gun nest and a squad of soldiers who opens fire. Head into the easement instead and into a house where some Dutch civilian women are startled by your presence. Head upstairs and come under fire from the soldiers outside. Again, you need to use a secret tunnel to reach the house next door and operate the machine gun. A Dutch sympathizer drops some much needed grenades when you reach the second floor of the Dutch women's house. Once you get rid of the third checkpoint, the first Panzer patrols the street you were on. A good idea would be to get rid of the tank before you head back out (back track) on the street and pick up the bits and pieces of ammo and health from the carnage.

When you are done, you can either head back into the house and navigate the maze of rooms and stairs, or head down the street, cack the four goons at the end of the street and make a left to go to checkpoint four. If you want the shotgun, you should make a right at the end of the street the tank was on and head into the first available backyard to find the weapon (a Dutch woman -- not the one calling for Kristina -- will greet you with a quieter salutation if you find the shotgun backyard). You can also go through the path that leads through the houses from checkpoint two and three and reach the backyard the shotgun is in.

Checkpoint #4

The last checkpoint is not far from where the woman calling for Kristina was. The house layout is similar to the one from checkpoint two; head from the "right" room to the "left" room using the secret tunnel. The guard manning this gun is facing the door when you open it, so be ready when you kick open the door. Once you are done, head downstairs in the house with the gun and leave by the back yard.

Destroy the radio - plus - Reach central Arnhem

When you head out into the easement behind the backyard, you should rush the next Gestapo interrogation with an MP40. Although you may see the machine gun, you should make an effort not to use it since the Panzer on the other side of that wall (to the left of the machine gun) nails you with its tank gun while you drill infantry. If you drill the tank, the infantry get in a lot of shots. Either way, you lose. The better way is to use up the MP40 and clear the area behind the wall so you have a safe place to lob grenades over the wall. If you need more grenades, head to the wall's left (while you are facing where the sounds of the tank are coming from) and find more grenades and a spot to toss them from at the second Panzer. Six to eight grenades exploding on the turret puts the tank out of commission.

When you come to the very long and suspicious looking alley, use your Gewehr to sight far down the corridor and carefully terminate the snipers at the end of the alley. All the people who are up in that perch until you head up into it which spawns two more soldiers. If you kill all the snipers from down the alley, you can run forward without fear. Otherwise, if you start ducking into and out of the various backyards, you meet extra enemies and the Dutch sympathizer who is scripted to die. The last backyard on the right (while facing the sniper perch) is where the radio is. If you are not looking for the gold, drop a grenade as close to the side of the house as possible (you do not need to go in). The radio is behind the left window of the house and should be destroyed in the explosion that goes through walls.

Central Arnhem is just past the sniper perch. If you head up there and snag the Gewehr ammo, two squads rush the perch from the ground and both sides via the roofs. You can stay to pick them off, or run through the door behind the Gewehr ammunition to end the stage.

3. Arnhem Knights, Several Bridges Too Far

Initial Equipment
  • Gewehr 43
  • Shotgun
  • Webley Silenced Pistol
  • Mark II Fragmentaion Grenades
Acquired Equipment
  • Browning Automatic Rifle (B.A.R.)
  • Panzershrek
Destroy Panzershrek squad - plus - Destroy two Panzer tanks

This is a pitched city fight, block by block, and broken down into five areas, each with its own unique tactical and logistical quirks. If you are not prepared to face the chaos of moving around in small spaces, and are easily confused by where to go, you are gonna die.

Area #1

You learn to miss that MP40 in a heated firefight, but British Airborne Master Sergeant Kelso will have an American B.A.R. next to him as he greets you and briefs you on the situation. As soon as you make a break for the street, he and what is left of his men start fighting soldiers. You should head up the short flight of stairs you can see from the corner where you met Kelso instead of meandering onto the street like sniper bait. In that house, you can find some ammo for the B.A.R. and some grenades, as well as two soldiers in the ruins. You can also easily see the two other snipers on the other side of the street. Deal with these four, rain grenades down the far side of the street. Once the firing lessens, head back down the streets and use the Gewehr and B.A.R. alternatively to clear the way ahead — look out for the lone sniper up high (very high) down the street in this area. When you see the hulk of the house blocking your way, that is the end of area one. Be sure to stick around and find all the ammunition; leave the health items (especially the medical and surgeon kits) unless you really need them. And always make sure you have some buddies around to secure the area in case you need to come back. Kelso follows you most of the way, but he usually dies at area four.

Area #2

The next area features an unmanned machine gun and two squads of troops (Axis and Allies) killing each other with relative equality until someone decides to cheat and call in a tank. As you head in, try to eliminate the lone sniper on the structure on the right side of the street (he is right above the machine gun); this way, more of your allies can be spared to return fire. When you hear the rumble of the first Panzer, make for the machine gun and blast it before it kills your buddies. The rest of the fight basically becomes mop up duty as you find and kill the last survivors. If you need to restore health, return to area one and clean out the health-ups there first before returning here. The way on to area three is past the side of the sweet shop to the machine gun's left.

Area #3

This area places Allied soldiers at a disadvantage as enemy soldiers pour fire down from the higher floors of the shattered houses. You need to be quick about using the B.A.R. and Gewehr at terminating as many soldiers as possible from ground level and making it to a staircase to kill off the attackers. To distinguish this area's exit and entrance, look for a small green sign hanging over the street — that is the entrance to this area. The side of the street without the green sign is the exit. The second house on the right has stairs leading to the third floor, while the second house on the left only goes to the second floor. Use both flights of stairs to reach the soldiers. You may want to use the B.A.R., then instead of reloading, switch to the shotgun, then the Gewehr, then the Webley in cases of heated firefights.

Area #4

If you did exceptionally well in the first three areas, you have slightly more troops to help you here. Otherwise, you are stuck with just Kelso and about two others. You need to climb the stairs to Patterson's left when you enter the area. Follow the stairs up to another flight of stairs. Your goal is to make it to as high a spot as you can to lob grenades or to put cover fire on the enemy. You should duck behind obstacles to break enemy line of sight — any explosions while you are navigating the stairs is lethal. A lot of luck is involved before you reach the highest point of the area and can see the Panzershrek squad. Use your B.A.R. or Gewehr to find and kill the four tube wielding soldiers before you get explosive shells hurled your way. Prioritise and leave the gun nest as the last priority after the Panzershrek wielding soldiers are killed (note that the squad consists of Maschine pistol equipped soldiers as well). Lob grenades over to the nest to kill the crew. Once you manage to survive this one, reload your weapons, and carefully head back down to find some health items in the immediate area.

Panzershrek soldiers do not fire if you are too close, but attempt to club you; however, if you back away just a bit more out of their hand-to-hand range, they still cannot fire until you step back. You can also trick them into killing themselves by moving and forcing objects between you and them. If the object in question is close enough to them, they fire and the explosion kills them.

The way to area five is right next to the wall where the machine gun is. Turn around and face the way you came because as soon as you get near that ramp of rubble, the replacement Panzershrek squad respawns in your midst. If you are lucky, they do not fire because either A) the first Panzershrek squad killed all your buddies, or B) they are firing on someone else. There are four Panzershrek soldiers, two Maschine pistol soldiers, and a sniper on a rooftop for you to deal with, so use five rounds from the B.A.R. on each Panzershrek soldier and then switch to the shotgun or Gewehr (if you can aim without the crosshair) and finish off the rest of the replacements and the sniper. One Panzershrek soldier is perched half way up the structure you were on (you cannot go to that spot normally), so be aware of his presence. Be sure to acquire any Panzershreks dropped by the soldiers to augment your arsenal. You need the fire power in the next fight.

Area #5

The last area is right in front of the custom house where youare headed for. it is guarded by both a machine gun nest and the second Panzer. You can approach this encounter two ways:

  1. Weave your way from house to broken house to reach one house on the left with a staircase to the second floor. You can drop grenades or launch Panzershrek shells into the tank and vape it. Make it a priority before the machine gun (or you can use the machine gun and destroy the tank, but you are not able to strafe-dodge its tank shells). Once the tank is taken care of, you can snipe the rest of the soldiers from the safety of this perch — just remember that soldiers can climb stairs too, so stay sharp and be ready to blast anyone who sneaks past your gunfire and makes an attempt on your life from behind.
  2. Stick to the right side of the street and look for a very narrow alley that you can duck into and come out behind the tank. If you manage to do it, you are taking very heavy gun fire from the enemy, but you are able to reach the machine gun nest faster. If you do get stopped short of the nest, you can still resort to grenades and Panzershrek shells to disable the tank (not recommended).

However you manage this is up to you. Secure this area and go grab some health after making sure every soldier is dead. If you back track from here, make sure an ally is manning the machine gun before you leave; that buys you some time if a lone soldier makes a break for the gun and kills your buddy.

Meet O.S.S. contact at customs house

The customs house is crawling with soldiers. clear the way upstairs to the O.S.S. agent. There is only way to go up. if you secured all the previous areas, you can amble back to previous areas and restore all of your life (and to get a gold rating). Be sure there are buddies around in area four and five before you head back; if there are none, you may want to reconsider your plans and just end the stage.
