Perfect Dark #11

Locations

With more than 30 weapons to choose from, the huge arsenal available to you in Perfect Dark will satisfy any agent's combat needs. Many of the weapons listed below have been based on real-life weaponry, as well as the make-believe special weapons and alien technology. Various weapons will be available in different missions, and all the weapons will be available for use in the Combat Simulator.

In each mission, you will start off with a set of weapons including almost always a Falcon 2 variant. You will be able to then pick up new weapons from fallen guards or hidden locations as you progress through a mission. Listed below are all 35 weapons found in the game.

Locations List

Carrington Institute

Carrington Institute main lobby.

While not in Solo Missions or the Combat Simulator, the player is free to roam around the Carrington Institute. When starting a new save file, Daniel Carrington may also appear and give you a tour of the building. Located throughout are a range of different training rooms, most of which have challenges for you to complete. While it is not necessary to do so, it is recommended that you get to know the various parts of the building intimately, as the information will greatly benefit you in a certain later campaign mission.

  • Shooting Range - In a room resembling a target range, the player is presented with an index of every weapon used by the player in Solo Missions, with each weapon having three different challenges to complete. Completing them all on Bronze difficulty rewards the player with the bonus mission The Duel, while completing them all on Gold difficulty nets the player the reward of the classic weapons, which are actually a handful of weapons from GoldenEye 007.
  • Combat Simulator - In a large black room, the player can practice basic combat training, which ranges from simply looking around to hand-to-hand combat.
  • Gadget Lab - In a small room on the second floor Here the player can train with each of the gadgets in the lab.
  • Hacker Central - In the room next door to the Gadget Lab, the player can access information on character's backgrounds and stories. Cheats can also be activated from this room.
  • Hangar - Located on the ground floor, players can access information on locations and vehicles. They can also practice pushing around a HoverCrate and riding a HoverBike in the area.
  • Combat Simulator - This is the Multiplayer mode of Perfect Dark, although it can be played Solo. The multiplayer is played via split-screen with a maximum of 4 players and 8 Simulants (AI Bots). If a player creates a profile, they can track their statistics, rank and create a custom character by matching heads and bodies.

The Carrington Institute is a private military research and development center founded by Daniel Carrington, who disbanded from Secure Development International, a company founded by his father Sir Richard and later led by his mother Sara.

The Insititute is well-known for its groundbreaking products, such as Null-G technology, which "taught the cars of the world on how to fly" as noted by Daniel himself. However, its main purpose was communication with extraterrestrial life, specifically with their allies, the Maians.

Throughout its business ventures, the Institute has formed its own personal investigation division that outclasses the U.S. Government's, with professional hackers and covert operatives, ready to deploy, to supplement the evidence needed for its operations. Protecting the main building, and its staff, is a small AR34-armed security team and a defense grid.

The Institute does have a high-tech weapon production venture, but it is however not quite as widespread compared to its more military combat-focused criminal rival, the dataDyne Corporation. Despite this, it still makes use of their equipment to service its personnel.

Carrington Institute Joanna office. As seen in the end of the game, it is now backed and well praised by the U.S. Government for its exceptional work in protecting important matters and stopping dataDyne and the Skedar from causing global chaos.

Products

The institute produced few weapons in contrast to its many gadgets and equipment, mostly for their field agents.

Cheese

Similar to the mission Carrington Institute: Defense, and the bonus mission, The Duel, the cheese is located on the balcony. However, the balcony cannot be open. A trick (though somewhat) difficult is explained below.

Requirements:
  • Hover Crate
  • Firing Range
  • Slayer
  • Access to the Slayer in the Firing Range

Head down to the hanger and collect the Hover Crate. Return to the main floor. Go to the Firing Range, open the door, and let go of the Hover Crate right at the door to block it from shutting. Make your way to the transparent door, back up slowly to block said door (make sure you have enough room to access the weapon menu). Use the Slayer's (preferably on Bronze) Fly-By-Wire secondary function and guide the missile outside the Firing Range, (hold A during the process of Fly-By-Wire). Windows to the outside where the Hover Bike is located should be visible. Go out a window, and then guide the missile down and you should see the Cheese.

Lucerne Tower

Lucerne Tower. Lucerne Tower is the global headquarters of dataDyne and the mission setting for the beginning of the game. Like most buildings in Perfect Dark, it is unclear which city it is in. An unused string in the text files of DataDyne Central: Defection states Chicago, but this is not canon because it does not appear in the final build of the game. The tower is a skyscraper with 14 floors (including the roof, which has a helipad and a room containing the Internal Security Comms Hub).

The floor directly below the roof has two elevators and Cassandra De Vries' spacious office. A button on the desk outside her office controls the lock of her doors. Below this floor are several rooms, presumably used as lounges because they are furnished with tables, chairs, and sofas. The Executive's office terminal is also on this floor. The floor below has a few other offices, one of which has a terminal that controls the elevators. Another office serves as a meeting room. There is also a small weapons cache on this floor.

The contents of the remaining floors are unknown, because there are not accessible, but it is likely they house more offices. On the bottom floor, there is a reception desk by the main entrance; and a guarded security room has the External Comms Hub. An elevator to the dataDyne labs is located within a secret room, only accessible to those with Cassandra's necklace.

Missions

Lucerne Tower is the setting for four missions, DataDyne Central: Defection, DataDyne Research: Investigation, DataDyne Central: Extraction, and the bonus mission Mr. Blonde's Revenge.

Fate

Lucerne Tower, along with the labs beneath it, is ultimately destroyed following the events of Mr. Blonde's Revenge, where a powerful bomb was detonated in the elevator connecting the two.

Laboratory Basement

The Laboratory Basement is a dataDyne owned property located underneath Lucerne Tower, connected by an elevator, and is used to develop weapons and other useful technologies. It is also home to Dr. Caroll, who sets the whole story of Perfect Dark in motion.

The technologies being developed here at the time of Perfect Dark include the K7 Avenger assault rifle, Night Vision goggles, a prototype shielding device and of course Dr. Caroll itself, all of which are stolen by Joanna Dark. There are various other experiments also going on but they are shut down by Joanna.

Located in the labs is a radioactive isotope being tested, and is apparently connected to the shield mentioned above. The labs also contain a firing range being used with the K7 Avenger. There are several maintenance bots to be found in the area, as well as a laser grid which seemingly can only be deactivated by these robots.

Carrington Villa

Perfect Dark Carrington Villa. Carrington Villa is the large mansion-like home of Daniel Carrington. The level Carrington Villa: Hostage One takes place here. The villa itself resides in a non-disclosed location, and serves as the personal retreat of Daniel Carrington. It is one of the larger levels in Perfect Dark, containing four floors chocked full with rooms and an extensive wine cellar. Which floor Joanna starts on depends on which difficulty is selected. On Agent and Special Agent, the player starts outside on a high position overlooking the dock, where one must save the negotiator. On Perfect Agent difficulty, the player is the negotiator.

Owned by the Institute, this secluded residence is used by Daniel Carrington as a retreat from the pressures of the Institute. As well as an observatory, it has a power generator and an extensive wine cellar.

Destroying the wine collection prompts Carrington to say: "Act your age, Joanna". Doing this in the XBLA version grants the player an achievement, which is named in direct reference to Carrington's response.

Chicago

Perfect Dark Chicago. Chicago is a real-life city located in Illinois, being the home of many big businesses and corporations. In Perfect Dark, you only explore a small back-section of Chicago. Accessible from a small gated-off alleyway or from the air, it is here that the carpark for the G5 Building and the secretive Pond Punk Bar reside. The level Chicago: Stealth takes place here.

Chicago: Backstreets of the city. A seedy, grimy part of the city of Chicago, now closed to ground traffic, it is here that the G5 Corporation has its headquarters.

G5 Building

The G5 Building is located in Chicago, and is the headquarters for the G5 Corporation, a front for dataDyne. Located in the grimy backstreets of Chicago, the G5 Building is responsible for representing the host of the many activities of its true identity.

Composed of a large warehouse like building. The building is accessed by a secure lift where a team of guards maintain position in the courtyard. A switch denies access to unauthorized personnel. Three fire exits are on the right of the building. Lightly guarded but never used. A G5 Robot patrols the streets, alongside G5 guards, and FBI Agents.

Inside, it compromises of several large rooms, winding corridors, a large dampening field generator and a large meeting room where key people can talk to, in private. The only obscured viewing port is a small window, accessed by a narrow path of wires, also protected by lasers.

The building also has a large bank-vault. Protected by a heavy-encrypted lock and will alert guards of any hacking attempt. As interior defense, an alarm system and a large force of guards litter the building. Which the latter will not think twice of raising when unauthorized personnel are detected.

Area 51

Area 51 is a secret US government facility in the Nevada Desert. It is an Air Force base, and covers most of the area due south of Dry Groom Lake. Given the secretive nature of the area, popular belief is that the US government is conducting experiments there on captured extraterrestrial technology and, possibly, live aliens. It is the main testing facility for new aircraft designs.

However, in the far more interesting world of Perfect Dark, there really are aliens at Area 51. Captured, imprisoned and awaiting dissection. Only you can save the Maians prisoner from a grisly fate! Area 51 is home to four missions:

  • Area 51: Infiltration
  • Area 51: Rescue
  • Area 51: Escape
  • Maian SOS

Area 51: Near Groom Dry Lake, Nevada. This section of the extensive facility known as Area 51 is based in the foothills around Groom Dry Lake. Exterior helipads and communication towers hint at the size of the complex beneath ground level.

Alaskan Air Base

Perfect Alaskan Air Base. A small airbase that resides in a remote corner of Alaska, this high-tech, high-security facility is only feasibly accessible via a tramcar. One of many small airbases used by the United States President and Air Force One, this private airport is well protected with alarms, security systems, and a fleet of Alaskan guards armed with Dragon assault rifles. A number of civilians work the airbase including a secretary at the front entrance and a handful of airline employees, off-duty pilots, and other office workers.

The level Air Base: Espionage takes place here. When Joanna infiltrates the airbase in order to board Air Force One, she must avoid detection from the security system. Upon shutting it down, a number of NSA agents under Trent Easton’s command will launch their attack on the base, killing the guards and the airport civilians. As Joanna must fight her way through the assault, a number of NSA reinforcements will arrive with the goal of taking out Joanna before she can reach the presidential plane to stop Trent and save the US President.

Alaskan Air Base: Brooks Range, Alaska. One of a series of reinforced air bases available as staging posts for Air Force One. Typically, the air base is remote, in an inhospitable region, far away from prying eyes.

Air Force One

Air Force One is an aircraft, owned by the US Government and for personal use by the President. It was on a flight from Alaska to Norway for a annual visit. Air Force One features a long array of seats, an upper command deck, well-equipped kitchen and emergency systems in the event of a hostile takeover, including an escape pod for the President.

Both the cockpit and the President's Office is located near the front of the aircraft, on the upper deck, accessible by a set of stairs. The lower cargo deck, and kitchen were accessible by a hidden trapdoor or by a service lift. It is here where the Escape Pod is stored, as well as any cargo, the plane may be carrying. Crew consists of the flight crew and a security detail to ensure the protection of the VIP on board.

Air Force One also has an auto-pilot system that must be manually activated in the event of loss of pilot and co-pilot.

Air Force One was stationed in preparation for a annual visit to Norway from the secret air base in Alaska. Trent Easton, and his NSA entourage, given their clearance as US personnel, boarded the plane in preparation to ask the President one final time before their attempt to kidnap him.

Joanna however manages to sneak onboard as one of the flight crew and makes her way to the President and convinces him with evidence of DataDyne's true intentions.

Upon Trent's request, a Skedar Dropship intercepts the plane and attaches itself, so that to allow NSA reinforcements to arrive to take over the plane. Joanna was able to get the President off and try to dislodge the attackers. However, it was unsuccessful and asks Elvis to try and shoot it off. His ship's weapons malfunction and instead crashes into the connector, causing all three to crash land.

Trivia

Air Force One is based off the fictional design in the namesake movie, including the escape pod. Although both planes suffered different fates.

Crash Site

Crash Site is a location, within Victoria Island in the Arctic Circle. A cold, vast snowscape; It is where Air Force One, A Skedar Ship and Elvis' Maian Saucer have crashed. The location is vast and so vehicle means is ideally sought in order to cover the large distance between noticable spots.

Trivia

The position coordinates 71N 118W is actually a location within Victoria Island.

Pelagic II

The Pelagic II was a Deep-Sea Research Vessel which was owned by the US Government. This ship is believed to be the successor of the Pelagic I, a research vessel owned by DataDyne in 2022.

The Pelagic II played a key role in DataDyne's plot to uncover a sunken alien ship that was in the scope of their alien allies for quite some time. However, since the Pelagic II was owned by the US Government, Trent Easton pestered the President with countless demands to obtain legal permission to use it but to no avail but also to obtain a few stem cells to produce a near-identical Presidential clone to leverage the documents for their own gain.

However, Joanna was able to rescue the President and kill the clone before Datadyne could obtain the ship. This did not stop them from stealing the ship altogether however and forcing the crew to work for them instead. The agent, along with her alien companion, infiltrated the ship and finally destroyed it.

Trivia

The Pelagic series were named after the Pelagic zone, a wide area of ocean water near the surface.

Cetan Ship

The Cetan ship is a large, sentient ship that has been resting at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean for centuries. It was discovered by the Skedar, which kicked off the events of Perfect Dark.

The Skedar were interested in the fact that this ship was equipped with a large mega-weapon which the Skedar planed to utilize in their war against the Maians. The ship makes it is only appearance in Deep Sea: Nullify Threat.

The Cetan ship is a large complex layout with various parts accessible by a highly diverse teleportation system. Both dataDyne and Skedar have occupied almost every area in the ship, with the former likely preventing any intruders from disturbing the Skedar's activity within.

The Cetan Ship became the central point within the alien conspiracy. Containing a highly effective nuclear-atom crushing weapon, the Skedar hoped to use it to kickstart another war with the Maians but chose Earth to test it on. They knew that Dr. Caroll would be the only way to effectively work out how to operate it and so it was imperative that he was made unaware of their plot in the first place in the event that the AI would turn rogue, which it did.

Despite the sinking of the Pelagic II, both DataDyne and the Skedar had already found and overrun the ship and eliminating any resistance in the process, likely by the ship's current owners. Though Joanna and Elvis followed them in a submersible and hopped to reinstall Dr Caroll's personality back into him before he activated the megaweapon.

Thanks to their success, the AI wanted to thank Joanna for helping him stop his creators, from completing their operation, and activates the ship's self destruct, buying time for the two to escape the ship's eventual destruction.

Trivia

The name "Cetan" may be derived from Cetus, a sea monster from Greek mythology.

Skedar Assault Ship

The Skedar Assault Ship is a starcraft commanded by theSkedar. Attack Ship: Covert Assault Takes place here. The ship itself is massive, able to house many Skedar and multiple aircraft. It contains a hangar with rooms that not only contain the hangar door controls, but also teleportation rooms that allow Skedar personel to quickly teleport around the ship.

Up a pair of elevators the first floor is home to many Skedar quarters, a Starmap, and the Assault Ship's engines. Going up a small hallway and continuing up two elevators reveals the bridge, being held by a large Skedar (possibly the Commander) dual wielding Maulers. After securing the bridge form the onslaught, Joanna and Elvis make a shocking discovery: the ship is heading toward the Skedar homeworld.

Trivia

It is unknown what the Skedar had originally planned for Joanna and Cassandra upon their capture, but it seems likely they would have stood charges in front of the Skedar King in their homeworld to be executed.

Skedar Homeworld.

Skedar Homeworld

The Skedar Homeworld is, as the name suggests, the home planet of the Skedar alien race. The late missions Skedar Ruins: Battle Shrine and WAR! take place here.

While those missions you play through does take place on the Skedar Homeworld, you only have access to one part of it: The Holy Temple. The Temple itself is fairly linear, starting you off in what appears to be a small landing pad, and is guarded by many cloaked and uncloaked Skedar warriors.

There is one main path outside the Temple itself that leads to 5 separate "special" pillars, 3 of which need to be destroyed. The path ends at a bottomless pit, which separates the outer Temple to the inner Temple. A weakened piece of wall blocks another linear pathway.

The pathway yet again comes to a halt to the same ravine. A room with a large, weighted button controlling the bridge lies in this small area. Traversing across the bridge and continuing on the pathway, there are 2 forks in the road: one leads upstairs, across a walkway to the secret Skedar army, the other leads to the area underneath said walkway to the Idol of War.

Passing the secret Skedar Army room leads into the Battle Shrine itself, home to the Skedar Priest, the leader of the entire Skedar race.

Trivia

While the Skedar homeworld does orbit three sun-like stars, as seen when looking up to the sky on the planet surface, none of the those stars are visible in the skybox when looking outside the level of Attack Ship: Covert Assault (but the planet itself is visible).
