Challenges

Combat Simulator Gametypes and options

The Combat Simulator has many options available to players, some settings can look complicated and can confuse the setup of a game. This section deals with general information about the CS, including the advanced setup menu, the several multiplayer scenarios, and a section detailing the new options that you can unlock by completing the challenges.

Advanced Setup

The Advanced Setup has the most options available to players to set up games. Use this only if you want to tweak your games to make them more interesting. Below is a description for all the menus and options available from here. Look in the Challenge Guides section for all the info about them.

Multiplayer Scenarios

Six multiplayer scenarios are available to players to use to set up the style of the game. Each one has their own specific settings for the game and can throw in some variety to the standard run around and shoot each other game.

Combat

The basic scenario of all the multiplayer games, Combat sets you against other players and/or simulants in a standard search-and-destroy. This can also be played as a team game, the team or player with the most kills wins. Knowing where weapons and items are in each map enhances your gameplay and can give you great experience for playing against harder simulants. Also keep in mind that the simluants will be constantly moving, they are much, much more intelligent than the enemies in the solo missions. Once again, experience is what you will need for greater victories. Start with Meat and Easy sims, set the kills score to a reasonably high level, and have fun. Use the Combat scenario for a fun, challenging battle.

Hold the Briefcase

Survival of the fittest. A randomly placed suitcase waits for a player to pick it up. Once a player grabs the suitcase, a timer begins counting down. Once it reaches zero, that player and their team scores a point. When no-one has the case, on the radar it shows up as a green dot. Be careful once you pick it up though, as you will not be able to pick up any shields and you will also move around a little slower than normal. Try to head for cover, and make sure that you can hide where you can have any openings covered. Once you beat the player/simulant holding the briefcase, they will drop it along with all their others weapons. Having human players as team members helps as you can guard the case-holder.

Hacker Central

Track down the Data Uplink and hack into the terminal to score points! The Uplink and the terminal will be shown as green dots on the radar, you will need to find both of them to score any points. Once you find the Uplink, head over to the terminal, take out the Uplink, and press B to start downloading. Be careful though as you are a sitting duck while downloading, you cannot move too far away from the terminal and you cannot use any weapons. Once the red bar fills up on the top of the screen, you will score 2 points. Re-start the download to score again. If you blast the player holding the Uplink, it will reappear in a different place, unless you are close enough to grab it off them as it falls. Try to play this scenario in team games, it really helps when you have someone to watch your back.

Pop A Cap

Simple scenario, track down the target and blast them to score points. Without the Kills Score active, games using this scenario can take a long time to finish. Selected randomly, one player/simulant will be selected as the target which eveyone has to try and track down. Whoever blasts the target will score 2 points, then another player will become the target. If you are the target, you will score 1 point if you survive for 1 minute. A fun scenario with free-for-all players, but only if you are not the target.

King of the Hill

One of the best scenarios, in this you have to find a certain area of the arena which is marked as the 'hill' and guard it until the timer reaches zero, then you will score points. If the other team captures the hill, you will have to blast them out of there before the timer reaches zero. Once a team member enters the hill, the room will change to that team's color and the timer will begin the countdown. You will score points according to how many of your team members are in the hill, if you are the only one, you will score 1 point, if there is three of you, you will score 3 points. If a member of an opposing team enters the hill, the timer will stop until members of only one team are in the hill. Make sure you stay in the hill until the counter reaches zero, otherwise it will reset itself. A great scenario for teams, it is good to know the maps well and know where all the possible hills are to give you an edge.

Capture the Case

Another classic scenario, similar to the PC counterpart Capture the Flag. In this scenario, each team has their own part of the arena as their 'base' and their own briefcase. The objective is to reach your opponent's base, grab their briefcase, and return it to your own base to score points. Using teams is great, one player can guard your base while the other goes after the enemy's case. You will need to run over your own briefcase with the enemy's to score points, so if someone has grabbed yours, get another player to track them down - its not worth risking yourself when you have already got the enemy's case. If the case holder is killed, the case will return to its original base.

This menu is where you can access the various simulants and add up to eight for a game. Check the Simulant Information page on the left to read more about the different types of simulants.

Teams

Use this menu to assign players and simulants to teams. You can also use the auto-team setting to quickly set up teams.

Load Settings/Save Settings

Here you can save your own game setup files to easily bring up your favorite settings. There are also several other preset games that you can use, keep in mind though that there are two simulants automatically set up in each preset and they will not be displayed in the simulants menu.

Player Setup

This menu allows you to customize your character's body and head, their name and you can also view your statistics, so its a good idea to save your player and use it always in any multiplayer game, as you can earn medals and new ranks.

Character

Here you can choose your character's body and head. Use the control stick to choose a body, and press up and down to switch between the head and body. You will start with a small number of available characters, once you unlock certain challenges, you will gain access to more of the characters.

Control

Here you can customize your prefered controller settings to use in a game. Try out some of the options to see what they do, but usually you should just leave the default setting active.

You can also earn one or more of the four medals in each game depending on how well you played in it. The four medals are Kill Master, Head Shot, Accuracy and Survivor. You can only earn the Head Shot and Accuracy if another human player is in the game. As your stats raise, you will receive a new rank, with 21 being the lowest and 1 being the highest. do not think you will reach 1 quickly, it will take a long, long time before you even get close.

Soundtrack

Choose from one or more tracks to be played during the game. Most of the tracks available are the ones played during the Solo Missions.

Team Names

Here you can assign a custom name to each team color, so that instead of displaying the team's color name in each game, it will show the new name.

Lock

Here you can set which player can set the options for the next game. You can choose from the winner and loser of the last game, your specific character and all players.

Ratio

Change the ratio to 16:9 if any of the screen is missing off the edge of your TV screen. Changing to 16:9 will make the screen slightly thinner.

Split

Simulant Information

There are six normal simulants a player can battle against, as well as many special simulants which have a twist on their personalities. The simulants range from very unintelligent to almost unbeatable. You will have to face the range of simulants in each challenge, and as the challenges increase, you will battle against more intelligent opponents. Listed here are the various simulants available to be used as opponents or team-mates, each one with their own description.

Standard Simulants
MeatSim

MeatSims are the easiest and therefore least intelligent of all the sims. This sim is the perfect choice for a beginner, as it is movement is slow and it has extremely poor accuracy. Take your time with these sims and use them for practice.

EasySim

This simulant has basic skills, movement and accuracy, and it also is the first sim which uses the Disarm attack. Not very skilled, be careful though as they should not be underestimated. Use this sim for a casual and fun battle.

NormalSim

NormalSims have the skill of the average player. These guys have much more skill than easy and meat sims, use these sims if you want to have a moderate challenge and a battle where you will not be guaranteed a win - just for something different.

HardSim

HardSims are just that - hard. They move around fairly quickly and have higher accuracy. They can easily pick you off from a distance, and they also tend to run backwards while somehow managing to fire at you. Use these guys only for a real challenge, using one is fun, but if there is a group of them, look out.

PerfectSim

PerfectSims are the ultimate opponents, they move around at a high speed and can accuractely hit you even while running backwards away from you. Use these guys only if you are an expert at controlling your character, it also helps to know your way arond each arena and where all the weapon placement areas are. These sims can really help you refine your combat skills, if you use them for a while, (be prepared to get beaten often) you should find fighting against the lower sims will be much easier.

DarkSim

DarkSims are practically unbeatable - only use them if you expect to get beaten, big time. These guys are not human but robots, allowing them to race around a map at high speeds, they can also climb ladders a heck of a lot faster than any other sim. They have almost perfect accuracy, and can see you a mile away. This sim is only here for the most daring players, they do appear in three of the challenges, but apart from that, most players probably will not want to bother using them, as they are very frustrating. It is fun though to have one on your team, if you have one with you, do not bother fighting anyone else, just order the DarkSim to protect you and you will probably never have to press fire.

Special Simulants
PeaceSim

PeaceSims protest the use of weapons and will only try to disarm you if you come too close. They will often run away from you, and will go around the arena grabbing as many weapons and ammo before you can get to them. The advantage is that if you blast them they will usually drop a whole heap of weapons for you. They will not put up much of a fight at all.

ShieldSim

ShieldSims will always want to have full shield protection. If they lose even the smallest bit of energy from their shield, they will run off to find a new one, but if you chase them they will run backwards and fire at you. If there are no shields in the arena, they will start out with one, but they cannot find a new one once it takes damage.

RocketSim

This sim prefers to use any type of explosive weapon, it is obsessed with blowing things up - even if it means blowing itself away in the process. It will also use other weapons, but its priority is explosives. Try to use explosive weapons on it as if you can fire at a sim just as it releases a grenade or rocket, the weapon will explode in their face. The RocketSim will also tend to walk straight through explosions, I guess it thinks it can somehow survive them, but it usually does not.

KazeSim

A KazeSim will ruthlessly hunt down a chosen target and will stop at nothing until the target is defeated. It will aggressively attack you and will tend to fire explosives even if it is near you. Be careful, this sim is not afraid to blow itself away.

FistSim

FistSims will try to punch you and disarm you repeatedly. They will not use any other weapons, but if they get near you, they will rip into you and circle around you to deliver some nasty blows. Your vision will get really blurry if you let one get close, try to blast it while running backwards to dodge it is fists.

PreySim

PreySims will only attack players who have low health, have just re-spawned or are using an inferior weapon. They will hunt weaker players and ignore stronger players such as ones who have shields. This weakness opens the sim for attack from the stronger players.

CowardSim

CowardSims will tend to just run away from you. They will fire at you while running backwards if you chase them, so be careful. Try to stay alert though, as they will often try to attack you from behind or if you have an inferior weapon.

JudgeSim

The JudgeSim will do the opposite to what the PreySim does, it will attck the winning player. This sim will stop at nothing to take the lead for itself, but if it is in the lead, it will attack anyone to stay that way. Be careful if you are on top.

FeudSim

The FeudSim will pick a target at the start of the game and will ruthlessly attack them for the rest of the game, even if they are taken down a few times. They will also fire on other players, they will just mainly concentrate on one. If you are the target, get ready to run, otherwise try to concentrate on other players or sims.

SpeedSim

SpeedSims will move around much faster than human players and can easily outrun you if you do not know your way around. They will often rely on shields to protect them, their speed is only a way to get away from you quickly. If you stop moving while chasing one, it will stop, giving you an easy shot while they are motionless.

TurtleSim

TurtleSims have a prototype shield generator which is twice the power of a normal shield, making these guys difficult to take down. Their disadvantage is that the shield slows their speed, making them easier to hit. They can often survive a direct hit from an explosive weapon, so constant fire is usually the best way to beat them. Be careful though, as they are not stupid and will fire back at you with relative accuracy.

VengeSim

A VengeSim will always attack the last player who took him down. It will only attack one player at a time, but if another player beats it before it can take down the other player, it will go after the new player, so be careful.

Combat Simulator Challenge Guides

There are 30 challenges that up to four players can play in. The challenges are preset games intended to test your skill against opponent simulants. As each challenge grows in number, they will become increasingly difficult. You can gain new options, weapons, characters and arenas by beating a certain number of challenges, so its well worth trying to complete them. Each game will have customized sims, weapons, options and different arenas, giving a wide range of games available. Once you beat each challenge, it will be recorded straight into the game even if you have not saved your player, so that then any saved player can access the bonus options. This section details the 30 challenges, giving info about the settings and a simple guide for each one.

Be very careful here, if you are caught in a simulant's fire, you will not have much chance of escaping it. Finding a SuperDragon and a shield is a must. Once you find them, charge after the simulants and blast away at them. Due to the slow motion, they will not be able to escape your fire easily. One again, know the map and get ready to (slowly) run.

Use the Laptop Gun sentry feature to rack up points here. Get as many weapons as possible, deploy the Laptop Gun (out it the large room with the walkway is a good spot) then hide somewhere and wait. Every time the simulants dash into the room they will be blasted away before they get near you. Keep this up and you should beat this challenge easily.

Cloaking devices are a must here. Try to grab as many Cloaking Devices as possible, you will need them to sneak into the simulants base to grab their case without them seeing you. If you have more than one player and you are base is in an enclosed room, have one player guard while the other goes after the case. If a cloaked guard tries to enter your base, the defending player can blast them easily. Use the FarSight to get easy kills, and remember that one of the simulants will usually be cloaked, standing on top of their case, making them an invisible but easy target.

Try to get a shield, SuperDragon and as many proxy mines as you can carry. The simulants in this challenge are very cunning and are difficult to beat. A good place to hide is up in the toilet area. Plant as many mines on the small room connecting the toilets to the stairway, and if a simulant comes in they will not stand a chance. Another good idea is to have the grenade launcher function of the SuperDragon handy and aimed at one of the slow-opening doors. If the door opens, pump it full of grenades and the simulant will not know what hit him.

Another tough one, the Slayer can mean success or disaster here. If you ever come across a simulant that is standing still with a Slayer out, it means they are using a remote rocket. Blast them quickly and they will not know what hit 'em. The shields help here, but using a remote rocket on the simulants if they get into the hill really helps (once on a 2P game, all four simulants went into the hill just before I blew them all away with a single rocket!). If you see a rocket flying around, run away or try to blast it with the Reaper. Watch your back and always be aware of stray rockets.

A tough one, but the DY357-LX will come in handy. Try to get two of them, and storm the enemy base. Be careful, though, as the simulants will most likely use Devastators. Quickly pick them off before they can fire. Get to know the map well and use the tunnels to escape enemy fire. With more than one player, it should be easier to beat, but also be careful with explosives.

Get ready for a hard-core battle here. There are no shields, but the simulants like using Reapers and are cheatingly accurate with them. If you are a hotshot, the charged-up Mauler will work well, but otherwise, use the Reaper and just fire in the direction of the simulants. Try to also use a Laptop Gun, planting one in the hill while they are in it will work well. If you find it difficult to score, get ahead and stop them from scoring.

End of the line, if you hate DarkSims, I advise you to go no further than this challenge. An AR34 and a shield is a must, and you will have to be VERY fast to escape enemy fire. Try to sneak in past them and grab their case, if you cannot get back to your base just hide somewhere and stay there, if no-one scores, you will automatically win. Only try these last three challenges if you are very, very patient.

Limits

10 minutes/Team Score 1P-10, 2P-20, 3P-25, 4P-30

Probably the toughest challenge to beat, but it is possible. If you are the only player you will be up against two DarkSims, one of them has Grimshaw's face (the hacker guy with the corny voice) so if you do not already, you will end up disliking him, possibly even hating him. First, try to get up to the bridge in the far corner near the small alcove in the ravine area. You will find a CMP150 on the bridge and a Dragon at one end, with ammo for it lying on the ramps leading down the tall shaft. Using a proxy Dragon and placing it over in the corner leading down to the main large room helps a lot, often you will get a double kill as the simulants ignore explosions and think they can survive a blast, which of course they cannot.

Do not be worried that there are not any shields, this means you will be able to whack them easier. Hide just around the corner up on the bridge and toss a proxy Dragon into the other corner and wait. Take out the CMP150 or a Cyclone, and aim at the right of the corner where you place the Dragon, as when they fly up around the corner, they will rush into the corner before charging at you. Watch your radar, and as they close in on the corner, start blasting away and you will hit them before they get a chance to fire at you. Head shots are a must, and you should blast them quickly before they get a chance to fire. Keep persisting and you should eventually beat this challenge, but be thankful that no shields, explosive weapons or instant kill weapons are available.

Having a NormalSim on your team will help a lot in this challenge. Not as tough as the previous one, you will only have pistols in this match, so try to grab a Mauler or two and always use the charged-up shot. The DarkSims will always use MagSec's, so just blast away at them and you should beat them easily with the charged shots. Order your simulant to "Hold Hill," so that they stay in the hill once you capture it. Stay with her until the timer goes, and you will score two points instead of one. You should not have too much trouble beating the DarkSims, the instant-kill shot of the Mauler really, really helps. Keep persisting and you should find this challenge much easier to beat than the previous one.

Combat Rankings

One of the best features of the Combat Simulator is that it allows you to record several statistics gained from each game you play in. Every time you play a game, your statistics will rise accoridng to how many kills you make, if you play well enough to receive an medal, the distance you ran, and so on. You will also have an overall title for your player which describes how high your statistics are, the better the rank, the higher your statistics.

Each statistic must be at a certain level to reach the next rank, SubDrag of the former dataDyne HQ site managed to discover that it is a system of points, and each time a certain statistic reaches a higher point your rank increases. Making it to Perfect:1 is the ultimate goal, but it takes a lot of time and patience to get there. Read on for the list of ranks, the requirements for the top rank, and some handy hints on how to get there.

Raising Kills + Damage Dealt

This is a very cheating method, but it will cause your damage dealt and kills count to shoot through the roof. First, set the options to those listed below.

  • Arena: Felicity
  • Scenario: Capture the Case
  • Simulants: Maximum, any difficulty
  • Weapons: All Remote Mines
  • Teams: Player: Red, Sims: Yellow
  • Limits: None

If you are using the Temple arena, head down to the large open area where the pillars are. Stand near the center of the room and hold the control stick on an angle so that your character runs around in circles. While holding the stick at an angle, press L + R + Start together to lock the neutral position to the angled position. Release the stick and your character will continue to run around in circles.

Make sure they do not run into any pillars, by using this trick and leaving the game on overnight or for 10 hours a day, you should be able to reach the requirements fairly quickly, and fast movement will cause you to run at a faster rate which helps greatly.

Raising Distance + Time

Not as much a cheating method as the above one, you will notice that the Time and Distance requirements are ungodly high. Use this trick to get them easily.

  • Arena: Temple (or any with large open areas)
  • Scenario: Combat
  • Fast movement active
  • Simulants: None
  • Weapons: None (not needed)
  • Limits: None

If you are using the Temple arena, head down to the large open area where the pillars are. Stand near the center of the room and hold the control stick on an angle so that your character runs around in circles. Raising Medals

This is another cheating method, this will give you all four medals without much effort in each game played.

  • Arena: Any
  • Scenario: Combat
  • Simulants: None
  • Weapons: Any (include the LX)
  • Limits: Score - 1

Have your player loaded as well as a dummy second player (not someone else's player file). Find an LX, go up to the second player and shoot them in the head. With a limit of 1 the game will end and you will get all four medals! This is a very cheating way to get them, only do this if you do not want to put much effort into reaching the top rank.
