POKER RULES

Poker was developed sometime during the early 19th century in the United States. In the 1937 edition of Foster's Complete Hoyle, R. F. Foster wrote: “the game of poker, as first played in the United States, five cards to each player from a twenty-card pack, is undoubtedly the Persian game of As-Nas.”

Poker is any of a number of card games in which players wager over which hand is best according to that specific game's rules in ways similar to these rankings. Often using a standard deck, poker games vary in deck configuration, the number of cards in play, the number dealt face up or face down, and the number shared by all players, but all have rules which involve one or more rounds of betting.

Winning Hands

  1. Royal Flush A straight from a ten to an ace with all five cards of the same suit. In poker all suits are ranked equally.
  2. Straight Flush Any straight with all five cards of the same suit.
  3. Four of a Kind Any four cards of the same rank. If two players share the same Four of a Kind, the bigger fifth card (known as the kicker) decides who wins the pot.
  4. Full House Any three cards of the same rank together with any two cards of the same rank. Our example shows "Aces full of Kings" and it is a bigger full house than "Kings full of Aces."
  5. Flush Any five cards of the same suit (not consecutive). The highest card of the five determines the rank of the flush. Our example shows an Ace-high flush, which is the highest possible.
  6. Straight Any five consecutive cards of different suits. Aces can count as either a high or a low card. Our example shows a five-high straight, which is the lowest possible straight.
  7. Three of a kind Any three cards of the same rank. Our example shows three-of-a-kind Aces, with a King and a Queen as side cards - the best possible three of a kind.
  8. Two Pair Any two cards of the same rank together with another two cards of the same rank. Our example shows the best possible two-pair, Aces and Kings. The highest pair of the two determines the rank of the two-pair.
  9. One Pair Any two cards of the same rank. Our example shows the best possible one-pair hand.
  10. High Card Any hand not in the above-mentioned hands. Our example shows the best possible high-card hand.

POKER TERMINOLOGY

Flop, Turn, and River

There are 5 cards that are put onto the table. The first three cards are referred to as the Flop, the 4th card is referred to as the Turn and the last final card is referred to as the River.

Showdown

When all five cards on the board are turned over, they are compared to the card in the players hand to determine the winner of the pot.

Blinds

There are small blinds and big blinds. What this mean is that left of the dealer puts money on the table equal to half the minimum bet then the player to the left of that person puts up a big blind which is equal to the minimum bet. The role of dealer and blinders rotate around the table.

Opening Bet

After the Big Blind, players ante up and if the players raise the bet, they continue until a player checks which occurs if no one else raises.

Pot

This is the amount of money that is available to win. The more money bet into the pot, the more the winnings are.

Poker Night Variations

There are many variations on the traditional games of poker that come up now and then at Poker with the Guys and some Gals.

Seven Card No-Peaky

This one is just plain old luck of the draw. Deal everyone 7-Cards face-down and the first player lifts a card face up and bets on it. The second player has top beat that card with a higher card or a pair then bets on it. The third player now has to beat the second player's cards by placing one card face up at a time. If any player cannot beat the previous players hand after all seven cards are face up, then they are obviously out of the hand.

The winner is the player with the best five-card hand with all seven cards. Betting is done after a player has beaten the previous players hand.

Roll Your Own

Can be played as a Five or Seven Card draw.

After the dealer has shuffled the cards, the dealer deals one card (or two cards of playing seven-card draw) face down to each player. The second card is face up but the player has the option to take it or not. If the first player takes it, the dealer does the same to the next player and so on. If the first player chooses not to take it, the card is offered to the next player and so on down the line until someone takes it or the last player has been given a chance to take it. If that player chooses to take it then the next card is dealt to the previous player face up no matter what. After the second card is delat to each player, betting begins as normal. The process is redone for the third, forth, fifth, and if needed the sixth, and seventh card.

The unkown of the game is the hole cards.

Baseball

Do not remember the rules.

Pot

This is the amount of money that is available to win. The more money bet into the pot, the more the winnings are.
