Introduction

GoldenEye 007 is a first person shooter videogame developed by Rare and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo 64. It was released on August 25, 1997 and is based upon the 1995 James Bond film GoldenEye.

Rare's Goldeneye 007 is a fantastic single and multiplayer game. Even people who were bored of first-person games will love this crafty spy take on the first-person shooter genre. The strategy guide will help you through each of the 18 mission, on all three difficulty levels, and will ensure you know what to do and when to do it.

Plot

In 1986 Arkhangelsk, Soviet Union, MI6 has uncovered a secret chemical weapons facility at the Byelomorye Dam. James Bond and fellow 00-agent Alec Trevelyan are sent to infiltrate the facility and plant explosive charges. During the mission, Trevelyan is shot by General Arkady Ourumov, while Bond escapes by commandeering an aeroplane. Five years later in 1991, Bond is sent to investigate a satellite control station in Severnaya, Russia, where programmer Boris Grishenko works. Two years after the Severnaya mission, Bond investigates an unscheduled test firing of a missile in Kyrgyzstan, believed to be a cover for the launch of a satellite known as GoldenEye. This space-based weapon works by firing a concentrated electromagnetic pulse (EMP) at any Earth target to disable any electrical circuit within range. As Bond leaves the silo, he is ambushed by Ourumov and a squad of Russian troops. Ourumov manages to escape during the encounter.

In 1995, Bond visits Monte Carlo to investigate the frigate La Fayette, where he rescues several hostages and plants a tracker bug on the Pirate helicopter before it is stolen by the Janus crime syndicate. Bond is then sent a second time to Severnaya, but during the mission he is captured and locked up in the bunker's cells along with Natalya Simonova, a captive computer programmer unwilling to work with Janus. They both escape the complex seconds before it is destroyed—on the orders of Ourumov—by the GoldenEye satellite's EMP. Bond next travels to Saint Petersburg, where he arranges with ex-KGB agent Valentin Zukovsky to meet the chief of the Janus organisation. This is revealed to be Alec Trevelyan—his execution by Ourumov in the Arkhangelsk facility was faked.

Bond and Natalya escape from Trevelyan, but are arrested by the Russian police and taken to the military archives for interrogation. Eventually, Bond escapes the interrogation room, rescues Natalya, and communicates with Defence Minister Dimitri Mishkin, who has verified Bond's claim of Ourumov's treachery. Natalya is recaptured by General Ourumov, and Bond gives chase through the streets of St. Petersburg, eventually reaching an arms depot used by Janus. There, Bond destroys its weaponry stores and then hitches a ride on Trevelyan's ex-Soviet missile train, where he kills Ourumov and rescues Natalya. However, Alec Trevelyan and his ally Xenia Onatopp escape to their secret base in Cuba.

Natalya accompanies Bond to the Caribbean. Surveying the Cuban jungle aerially, their light aircraft is shot down. Unscathed, Bond and Natalya perform a ground search of the area's heavily guarded jungle terrain, but are ambushed by Xenia, who is quickly killed by Bond. Bond sneaks Natalya into the control centre to disrupt transmissions to the GoldenEye satellite and force it to burn up in the Earth's atmosphere. He then follows the fleeing Trevelyan through a series of flooded caverns, eventually arriving at the antenna of the control centre's radio telescope. Trevelyan attempts to re-align it in a final attempt to restore contact with the GoldenEye, but Bond destroys machinery vital to controlling the antenna and defeats Trevelyan in a gunfight on a platform above the dish.

Gameplay

GoldenEye 007 is a first-person shooter where the player takes the role of Secret Intelligence Service agent James Bond through a series of levels. In each level, the player must complete a set of objectives while computer-controlled opponents try to hinder the player's progress. Objectives range from recovering items to destroying objects, defeating enemies, or rescuing hostages. Some objectives may also require the player to use high-tech gadgets. For example, in one level, the player must use Bond's electromagnetic watch to acquire a jail cell key. Although the player begins each level with a limited amount of supplies, additional weapons and ammunition can be acquired from defeated enemies. There are no health-recovery items, but body armour can be acquired to provide a secondary health bar.

Game Modes

Single Player Mode

You control James Bond and complete missions based on the movie's story. There is a variety of weapons in the game such as knives, pistols, rifles and others. To complete missions, the player must complete all objectives that are given when you select a mission. Examples include killing a specific enemy, retrieving documents and rescuing hostages. Usually, the number of objectives increase when you select harder difficulties.

Multiplayer Mode

A player can play with up to 4 friends in total in different areas. The players can choose a character of their choice. Some of the characters are not even in the single player mode. Some characters need to be unlocked if you want to play as them, and that is done by completing missions in the single player mode.

Five scenarios may be chosen. All the scenario names, except Normal and Team: - vs - , are names of Bond films.

  • Normal: Classic deathmatch.
  • You Only Live Twice: As the name suggests, players only have two lives. The last person alive wins.
  • The Living Daylights [Flag Tag]: One of the players must find a flag, and then pick it up, without being killed by the other player(s).
  • The Man with the Golden Gun: One of the players must find the Golden Gun, and then pick up the gun, without being killed by the other player(s).
  • Licence to Kill: One hit kills a player.
  • There are also three Team Scenarios:
    • -Team: 2 vs 2
    • -Team: 3 vs 1
    • -Team: 2 vs 1
Cheat Options

You get to use cheats in the single player mode. A cheat is unlocked when you beat a mission really quickly or when you beat a mission on a certain difficulty. Here are some of the cheats:

  • DK Mode - a cheat that allows you and other characters to look a bit like Donkey Kong.
  • Infinite Ammo - a cheat that allows you to have endless ammo.
  • All Weapons - a cheat that gives you every single weapon found in the game.

Tips

Rule of stealth

Sometimes you simply need to be fast, oftentimes strafing and running simultaneously is better than straight running. Stealth includes being sneaky and smart, without getting noticed. Try to be subtle. This is not Doom. Example: Shoot one single round of the KF7 Soviet instead of four to keep the whole army from arriving at your door step.

When you fire off a couple shots of silenced PP7 at as guard, no nearby guards are going to hear. But when you pump a guard chock full of Soviet bullets, guards are going to come. But, shooting only one shot off of the Soviet (use the aimer) will not attract any guards. This is useful when going for head shots on stealth missions. Another point is that shooting a Soviet and other loud guns at drone guns, video cameras, and some computers will NOT attract any guards at all. This comes in handy on the Bunker 2.

Reload often

Reload every time you're about a new encounter. This way you're always prepared.

Check your gadgets and weapons often

Sometimes you will pick stuff up without noticing, or even worse, you never checked the beginning. In almost every level you're given a different stuff. Check it out!

The Railings and Pits Law

For some reason, bug or programmed trick, the enemies in Goldeneye can't shoot over pits and spaces in the level. For example, on the Dam, if you're sniping in one guard tower, and another guard sees you from another guard tower, he can't shoot at you. Instead, he has to jump down the ladder, and run halfway across the Dam to your guard tower, giving you time to nail him with a Soviet.

It's the same thing with the railings on the corners of the stairs in the facility. This "trick" is especially helpful when defeating Jaws on the Aztec Level.

NOTE: For some reason, this law doesn't work with that big pit in the Aztec Level, or with the high bridge near the ammo dump in the Depot.

Guards have Different Amounts of Health

On 00 Agent most Russian Soldiers can take one or two hits to the chest with the average pistol before going down. It's also been noticed that most Janus Special Forces (the black guys on the Cradle) can take MANY ZMG bullets to the chest. And or course the Supervillains (such as Xenia and Jaws) are totally different.

Headshots when possible

When using a PP7 (silenced or not), DD44, or even a Klobb, head shots are ESPECIALLY important, because these are weaker weapons. When using more powerful automatics, you can afford to aim for the chest because most enemies will be a bit stunned after being shot, and automatics take advantage of that.

Shoot through windows

You can shoot anything through a window with one shot. It's fun, they break, and you get to kill.

Be careful of cameras

Cameras send in the troops. Cameras are bad. Do not let them see you. Ever hear the saying, "Kill you Television"? Well, here, the same applies to cameras.

Watch out for grenades, explosive boxes

Listen for the clink of a grenade. They will hurt you, bad. Also don't stand next to boxes with skulls and cross bones on them! They will hurt you bad, too.

Play smart not sweaty

Use your brain. Sometimes it's smart to use a silenced gun instead of a Klobb, sometimes, it's smart to put your gun away altogether (like in the Statue level)

Law of Spontaneous Generation

The Law of Spontaneous Generation is VERY important. In the Facility guys will keep coming as if from nowhere? They do. In most levels, if you reach a certain spot, or set off in alarm, guys will start coming from nowhere.

Ambush

When an enemy turns a corner, there will be a short moment of surprise. Therefore, the best place to ambush enemies is around corners. This is a very important strategy, and you can use it in any level of the game.

Here are some basic tips that will keep you alive while playing. These techniques and quick hints will make your game infinitely better and more fun.

Strafe

Use the left and right C buttons to keep from getting shot.

Lean

Press R and then press the right or left C buttons to lean around corners. This is even better than strafing in certain situations.

Crouch

Press R and then the bottom C button to crouch. Occasionally you can blow the shins off people and it's pure pleasure.

Trivia

  • The faces of the soldiers and other enemies in the game (this excludes Trevelyan, Xenia, Ourumov and Boris) are actually the faces of the developers.
  • Surprisingly, the game's addictive and famous multiplayer was not intended to be in the final version of GoldenEye and was an afterthought.
1001 Video Games

GoldenEye 007 appears in the book 1001 Video Games You Must Play Before You Die by General Editor Tony Mott.

Cheats

Was one of the first games to feature unlockable cheats. In other words players were required to work for cheats in this game.

Goofs
  • In the Control level, if Bond kills Boris, Natalya will refuse to open the security door, thus failing the mission. Her change of heart is quite selfish, as she is letting millions of people die at the hands of Janus, just because she thinks Bond made a mistake.
  • In multiplayer mode, no matter what character you play as, you will always have Bond's hands in animations. Even if you have a gloved or female character.
  • The laser gun is called the Moonraker Laser but if it is your weapon of choice at the end of a multiplayer match, it is incorrectly called the Military Laser.
  • In the Bunker level, you can kill Boris without penalty yet he still turns up alive and well in the Control level.
Cut Content
  • The gun that you see in some of the screen shots on the back cover of GoldenEye 007 (the one that looks like a Soviet, except it's mostly black and brown at the tip) was called a Spyder — it was scrapped at the last moment and replaced by the Klobb.
  • In the beta version of the game, Bond was required to cross the Dam level on a boat to reach the mysterious island. At the far reaches of the level sits a protruding dock, where a boat waited for Bond. On the island he had to defeat a drone gun and a guard to acquire the pontoon gun to rappel down the side of the dam. However in the release version the idea was scrapped due to complications. Now the dock sits idly and no boat awaits. The island now sits with no guard, only an inactive drone gun. However by using the gameshark you can play the beta version and play this part of the mission.
  • Originally the runway level there was a motorbike which was intended to be in the game however was scrapped before the release probably due to the difficulty of controlling the bike in a first person shooter.
  • The truck in the dam level apparently has no purpose. Though there is speculation that in the beta version you were intended to destroy it, it was either scrapped or never taken into account. Rare responded to this and simply said it was to guide the player through the first level. However this only leads to more questions and most doubt this was the original true meaning.
  • The back cover for the American release for the game includes multiple false screen shots and false information. In the description it says that you can navigate 12 interactive 3-D environment. However there were way more levels actually in the game. The screenshots show the original Spyder gun, a gun which was included in the beta version of the game, however scrapped before the release for the Klobb. The screen shots also show Bond shooting a man and blood shooting out of his body, which was not included in the release. Finally, the screenshot of Bond in the silo shows him holding an AR33 assault rifle, a weapon you cannot acquire in that level without cheats.
  • It was intended that there would be a cheat that allowed you to play as all Bonds (Moore, Connery, Lazenby, and Dalton) in multiplayer mode. However because the rights of their names belong to MGM and the respective actors, the idea could not be pulled through.
  • The statue and cradle levels of the game were included in multiplayer in the beta version of the game but strangely scrapped before its release. Some speculate that cradle was too slow and too big to be included, and statue park in multiplayer when played on the gameshark has multiple glitches which were possibly not fixable. Both can be played in beta version using a gameshark.
  • There is an inaccessible trapdoor in a guardhouse in the dam level, where you install the covert modem on the back of it. It was speculated that this is where Bond got explosives for the rumored mission where you had to blow up the truck. However, no one is certain. There are also rumors that it once led down to the data backup room, as it is almost directly over it.
  • In the dam level, there are three guard towers on the main dam, and one is across the lake on the mysterious island. The ones on the dam are marked 2, 3, 4 in order, and the one on the island doesn't have one. So what happened to tower #1. It is speculation that it was immediately to your right once you shot the lock to the dam, and was probably removed and the programmers forgot to change the other numbers.
  • At the very beginning of the Silo, you can look down and see this vent, and have an even closer look with a Sniper Rifle. It was originally believed that it was somehow connected with the level's lost elevator (that can be seen in an early promo video), but I now suspect that the area below was the original starting point for the level. They just placed a grate over it instead of deleting it. Notice how at the end of the walkway, the railing ends... Why would it do that?
Development

GoldenEye 007 was originally going to the Super Nintendo as a side-scrolling game but with the *new* Nintendo 64 Rare decided to scrap their original idea and make a totally 3D First Person shooter instead.

GoldenIsland

On the first level, the Dam mission, it is possible to see what has been dubbed the GoldenIsland, a distant platform with a tower and a gun turret. Go to the very edge of the level's end, to an outcropping pier at the base of the dam. Use the fullest zoom of a sniper rifle to see it.

Inaccuracies

In the dam level, the climate appears mild, however in the runway level, which is a few hundred feet below it, it appears absolutely freezing. Normally the higher locations are colder.

Multiplayer

Despite the fact that Oddjob and Mayday were both selectable characters in multiplayer mode, neither of them were included in a singleplayer mission.

Player's Guide

A screenshot in the players guide for GoldeEye 007 depicts a Russian Guard at the ending cutscene of Surface 2 with two (maybe three) faces.

References
  • David Doak, as of 2001 the Managing Director of Free Radical Design, was part of the Rare team when GoldenEye 007 was developed. He was rendered into the game as Dr. Doak in the 2nd mission.
  • The Klobb is named after Nintendos Ken Lobb. His head is in the game as well, it has black hair and a mustache.
  • One of the items in this game, the CCVV tape, has the GoldenEye movie poster on it.
  • A reference to every Bond movie (except, of course, those made after GoldenEye's release) is made in some form throughout the game.
  • Many of Rare's games have their logo throughout the levels. In GoldenEye 007, there is the Rare logo in the Depot, in front of the Train building.
  • The clever people at Rare included a no Bond sign in the Facility. It's the famous James Bond silhouette, of course with the line across it. Those soldiers must really have something against Bond, huh?
  • The faces of all of the guards in the game are the faces of people who developed the game.
  • Joseph Stalin and Karl Marx both make an appearance in GoldenEye 007. Stalin's face appears in the Statue Park level. It is a bit hard to find it, but it is inscribed into the side of a block of stone, and it is a bit hard to make out his face. Marx is much easier to see. In the archives, near the windows where you have to jump out on the second floor, Marx's face appears on a poster near the door.
  • The D.K. Mode cheat appears to be a reference to Donkey Kong, due to the similar build of the character used on the cheat. It should be noted that the developer Rare was involved with Nintendo's Donkey Kong franchise at that time.
Sales

One of the best selling video games for the Nintendo 64 with over a million copies sold, allowing it to become a Player's Choice title.

Scientists

The scientists are normally passive, putting their hands up and running away when the shooting starts. But on the harder difficulty levels, Secret Agent and 00 Agent, if you shoot the scientists they get out their guns (DD44 Dostovei) and attack you.

Secrets

In the second Bunker level, a few interesting things pop up on some of the computer screens. One is a man on a skateboard. The other, a man moving his mouth as if he's talking.

Truck

Some rumors went around that a soldier was actually driving the truck in the dam level. It makes sense for Rare not to let us see it, the doors are locked and the windows are blacked out. By using tiny bond mode you can wait for the truck to run you over by crouching. When you see under it you can clearly see that no one is driving the truck, unfortunately.

Unused Room

There is a strange last room in the Train where Xenia and Alec disappear to after you shoot Ourumov. If you have cheats to move fast enough or have a Gameshark, then it is accessible. In the room there is another locked door, and if you use a Gameshark to go through doors, there is only an empty space. The room was only added for completeness.

Weapons

There are many items throughout the game that help fire up the battle. All items disappear after a period of time it is unused or if it is used to a certain extent. The following is a full list of them.

Unarmed Karate Chop
GoldenEye 007 Unarmed Chop.

Unarmed is a weapon/ability, that Bond can utilize in order to conceal his other weapons. Bond also has the option of fighting unarmed in any mission. The attack animations consist of karate chops of Bond's hand, meant to possibly hit certain nerves to debilitate or kill enemies.

While the chop has very short range, it has a unique property unlike that of most other weapons; enemies unaware of Bond's presence can be silently killed in a single hit, conserving ammo. Not only this, but if the enemy is carefully avoided when they actually noticed Bond, if they are then hit on the back with the unarmed attack, it will still be fatal.

When this weapon is active, however, the hand that attacks is not always seen in the view, as it will be seen when it's actually used.

  • The chop is a simple weapon, you just hit the guy! What most people don't know is that the chop can actually cause a one hit death on SOME enemies if used correctly. Try to hit the guys in the chest, and see what happens then. It is a common joke in the GoldenEye 007 community, that Bond is not attacking with karate chops, but rather, a slap. This, coupled with the relatively light-hearted and cartoony impact noises of the attack, makes it truly seem as if Bond is humorously slapping enemies. The joke itself has origins in the development team of GoldenEye - so much so, a gamemode (Slappers only!) revolving around the unarmed attack exists in multiplayer.
Unarmed - Sniper Butt

Once Bond picks up the Sniper Rifle, Unarmed will be switched to its stock. Surprisingly, the damage from Unarmed, according to stats, is the same as the Cougar Magnum or Moonraker Laser. In some stages, Unarmed is your only stealth weapon. It is particularly useful in Archives. A player using Unarmed is not tracked by auto-aim, regardless of what they actually carry. This allows for some leeway when outgunned or after respawns.

If the attacker is killed around midway through the attack, the chop itself still continues as an active hitbox, making it possible to not only injure, but actually kill players beyond the grave with a ghost attack. This can turn out very handy in LTK, where it all but guarantees a kill.

  • The sniper butt replaces your hand as your unarmed weapon as soon as you grab the sniper rifle. You do not really find much use for it in these levels, but it is sort of a fun toy to play with when using All Guns.
Hunting Knife
GoldenEye 007 Hunting Knife.

The Hunting Knife is a melee weapon that is similar to Unarmed but is much more powerful; it can kill most guards with one or two hits. It is actually one of the strongest weapons in GoldenEye 007, as its damage is greater than the Cougar Magnum, Moonraker Laser, or even a full hit of the Automatic Shotgun, and can be dual wielded for deadly effect. This weapon is unavailable by normal means, but cheats do grant Bond it. Like Unarmed, this weapon can not break boxes or glass. This weapon has a very low range and can only hit when next to the enemy. The Hunting Knife is not featured in Multiplayer without the use of a cheating device.

Trivia
  • It is one of the two knives in the game. The other one being Throwing knife.
  • The Watch menu has the Hunting Knife simply called "Knife."
  • This weapon is called the "Fighting Knife" in the instruction manual.
  • In the Japanese version of the game, the weapon's cheat in Cheat Options, known as "2x Hunting Knife," has been replaced with a different cheat called "Dual-Wielded Sniper Rifle and Grenade Launcher." This is because at the time of the game's release in 1997 there has been a series of murders in Japan involving knives. So this cheat has been removed from the International version of GoldenEye 007, because of its offensive symbolism to these murders. Based on this, it's possible to assume that most appearances of this knife have been removed from that version ("All Guns" Cheat and similar knife-referencing).
Throwing Knife
GoldenEye 007 Throwing Knife.

The Throwing Knife is a weapon very similar to the Hunting knife except Bond holds it upside down and throws it, rather than slashing. Damage-wise, although the stats suggest identical power, a thrown knife is not always the same as the Hunting Knife as it can hit limbs which reduce damage and armored enemies shrug it off. Since it is thrown, the knife has a much longer range than its slashing counterpart, but it takes skill to use one successfully, since the knife flies in an arc. Generally Bond needs to aim differently on his target in order to hit them at the appropriate distance, and may never be the same height, similar to usage of the Grenade Launcher, similar weapons and gadgets. Thrown knives on the floor can be picked up.

This weapon is only available in Bunker 2. However, they have their own cheat and this weapon even has its own multiplayer weapon set.

Because of its different technique and the way it is acquired in Bunker 2, its usage is often overlooked in ease of picking up the guard's KF7.

  • A lot of people just don't realize the full potential of the throwing knife. It actually does a lot of damage, about as much as a Cougar Magnum. The only trouble with two throwing knives is that they both get thrown at once, so one goes a little to the left, and the other goes to the right of the crosshair.
Notes
  • These knives may have been based on the ones used by the characters Mischka and Grischka (Two men, henchmen of villain Kamal Khan) in the 1983 James Bond film Octopussy, but this is not the only inspiration; Throwing knives are present in several other Bond films.
  • Once the fire button is pressed, Bond can hold the knife until this button is released, at which point, it will be thrown at the enemy in full force. Throwing Knives are considered hard to use, and as explained earlier, may not be similar as other thrown weapons. The way this weapon acquired is usually overlooked, considering the fact that the enemy guard will drop his KF7 Soviet once he is defeated while Unarmed. His weapon can then be used on the enemies, and they may drop additional ammunition for it, as well. Bond can still use this weapon, before he recovers his Silenced PP7.
PP7 Special Issue
GoldenEye 007 PP7 Special Issue.

The PP7 Special Issue (also known as PP7 for short) is James Bond's signature weapon of choice. The player will start with this gun in most missions. It is much more accurate compared to a DD44 Dostovei and has average damage. The PP7 can also help with conserving valuable ammunition, due to the high accuracy of the gun and considerably easy aiming system of GoldenEye 007. Like its silenced counterpart, it has a magazine size of seven rounds.

Trivia
  • During development, this pistol was called the Walther PPK, after its real-world counterpart. The name was presumably changed for legal reasons.
  • The PP7 is featured in Perfect Dark as the PP9i.
  • The PP7 has a few variants. They are: Silenced PP7, Silver PP7 and Gold PP7.
Silenced PP7
GoldenEye 007 Silenced PP7.

The Silenced PP7 is simply the PP7 fitted with a suppressor. It is slightly less accurate than its regular counterpart but it isn't as loud (which makes it good for stealth) and it has a bit less recoil. Like the normal PP7, Bond often starts with this weapon in missions.

Trivia
  • The Silenced PP7 doesn't appear in any mission after Bunker 2.
  • The Silenced PP7 can be fired faster by holding the fire button and pressing the weapon switch button or pressing Z quickly.
DD44 Dostovei
GoldenEye 007 DD44 Dostovei.

The DD44 Dostovei is a handgun found in the hands of Soviet and Russian officers, including General Ourumov.

This weapon has the same power as the PP7, but it is less accurate and much louder. It has a slightly larger magazine - of an extra bullet, thus making it 8 bullets in capacity. It can be dual-wielded in certain levels, while the Silenced PP7 can only be dual-wielded in Bunker 2.

  • The DD44 Dostovei is basically your standard pistol. It's small, loud, and packs a punch. It also holds one more bullet than the PP7. It's downside, however, is that the PP7 is a little faster than the DD44.
Trivia
  • During development this gun was called the Tokarev after its real-world counterpart. The name was presumably changed for legal reasons.
  • Scientists will draw a DD44 and shoot at Bond if they are intentionally shot twice in a limb and then ignored (this occurs on Secret or 00 Agent).
  • Baron Samedi has magically enhanced dual DD44 Dostoveis. The first encounter it fires as normal DD44s, second, as the ZMG 9mm, and third, as the Moonraker Laser.
  • The DD44 can be fired faster by holding the fire button and pressing the weapon switch button or pressing Z quickly.
  • The DD44 is featured in Perfect Dark as the CC13.
  • The DD44 and the Torka T3 are based on the same weapon.
Klobb
GoldenEye 007 Klobb.

The Klobb is a submachine gun that can be found in many of the missions that take place in Russia. While it is not actually the weakest weapon in the game, nor the least accurate, it is often described as such; The Shotgun, which technically holds both titles, fires a five-pellet spread which can be devastating at close range. The Klobb, on the other hand, fires slowly and the trajectory of its shots can be unpredictable. It does appear paired often, however, which does give it an advantage at times. It is rather noisy upon firing rapidly, so it is not recommended to use in missions like Bunker 2 and Archives where stealth is advisable to prevent multiple guards from appearing and chasing Bond.

Tactical Analysis
  • Given its low damage and accuracy, the Klobb is best used paired. Two Klobbs firing in unison can be an effective way to clear a room despite the noise, but for a lower number of targets, the KF7 Soviet is more effective, provided one has been picked up.
  • On higher difficulties, the subpar stats and ammo consumption make the Klobb a questionable weapon to use paired. Not only do enemies drop less ammo on difficulties such as 00 Agent, but the PP7, which the player has in every mission, can kill and maintain ammo more easily. The Klobb has the smallest magazine of any automatic weapon in the entire game, has low damage, a slow cyclic rate, and low accuracy, making it one of the most unreliable weapons in the game.
  • Rounds Per Clip: 20
  • Ammo: normal
  • Speed: ok
  • Damage: ok
  • Noise: medium
  • Found: Runway, Surface 1, Bunker 1, Surface 2, Bunker 2, Archives
  • Scope: n/a
  • Two?: yes
  • Multiplayer: yes
  • Cheats: n/a
  • The Klobb, even though it's an automatic, is a bit slow on the trigger. It's damage rating is sub-par, and it really does tend to eat away at your ammo.
Notes
  • During development this weapon was called the Skorpion VZ/61 after its real-world counterpart. The name was presumably changed for legal reasons.
  • The weapon was renamed the Spyder after the weapons switched to fictional names but had to be changed again for legal reasons, as "Spyder" is the trademarked name of a type of paintball gun. The name Klobb was chosen to honor Ken Lobb for his help during the development of the game. The game's instruction manual was printed before the proper name change took place, and the incorrect name "Spyder" was used. Ken Lobb is known as a boisterous, opinionated man, and many believe that the gun's inaccuracy and ineffectiveness could be part of the reason he got the honor of having the gun named after him. There is an interview with Ken Lobb from Nintendo Everything discussing the renaming of the weapon:

“I was working super hard, whether I was there or back at Nintendo. I took a luxurious weekend off as that game was about four weeks from done to go visit my in-laws in Portland. I called [Rare] on Saturday morning to talk to Martin. He said, ‘We’ve got bad news and good news.’ We’re weeks from launch. The game has to be done. I’m like, ‘Okay, what do you mean? Please tell me.’ They received a letter from Nintendo legal, saying the name of the Spyder had to be changed. It was a gun. If you have one of the first 600,000 or 700,000 copies of GoldenEye, your manual doesn’t say Klobb, it says Spyder. We already printed those manuals, and didn’t know Spyder was the name of an actual paintball gun. They didn’t want to risk it. It obviously looks nothing like this gun, but it’s a name that’s trademarked, so they wanted to change it, but didn’t have time to do a worldwide search. The name had to be unique. So Martin said, ‘We named it after you!’ The people at Rare called me Klobb. ‘So, we named it after you, is that okay?’ I was honored. And little did I know that the game was going to do great. I had no idea it was going to be what it was. The little letter from legal ended up having a nice impact on me, personally. It was appreciated.”
  • Evidence of the name Spyder can be found in the game's text files. All the names of the weapons are in alphabetic order with the exception of Klobb, which falls between Spy File and Staff List.
  • The Klobb is featured in Perfect Dark as the KL01313. It is one of the most unpopular weapons among the Goldeneye 007 fanbase. A Facebook Page was created to honor how disliked the Klobb is in the game.
KF7 Soviet
GoldenEye 007 KF7 Soviet.

The KF7 Soviet is an assault rifle that is the standard issue of all Russian guard enemies, including Russian Soldiers, Siberian Guard (Arkangelsk) and Siberian Guard (St. Petersburg), Arctic Commandos and some others. The KF7 Soviet is based off of the stock-less AK-47, which is seen in many James Bond movies. One of the most common weapons, it can be found in nearly every mission in GoldenEye 007, specifically the first half of the whole game. The KF7 has a zoom effect when in aim mode. This weapon is not recommended to shoot very rapidly, since it's very loud and can attract nearby guards with its noise (this applies to all other automatics). Short bursts reduce the chance of alerting and help improve its accuracy. Despite being based on a powerful real life rifle, it is the most basic automatic in the game and is relatively inaccurate.

  • Rounds Per Clip: 30
  • Ammo: rifle bullets
  • Speed: quick
  • Damage: good
  • Noise: blasting
  • Found: Dam, Facility, Runway, Surface 1, Bunker 1, Silo, Surface 2, Bunker 2, Statue, Archives, Streets, Depot
  • Scope: yes
  • Two?: n/a
  • Multiplayer: yes
  • Cheats: n/a
  • The KF7 Soviet is your standard, Russian made machine gun. You get the opportunity to use it in most of the levels in the game. It has great man stopping power, but a little bit of recoil can be expected, especially when using auto-aim. The Soviet's scope is also very helpful in most situations.
Notes
  • During development, this weapon was called "Kalashnikov AK47" and was based after its real-world counterpart. However, in the Goldeneye movie's set it is said that the gun prop used is a heavily modified Chinese "Norinco Type 56-1" rifle that look like AKS-74s. It is not clear why the name was changed.
  • This weapon's model was drastically changed before release. While both are similar and resemble a Type 56, the final model has a sleeker appearance.
  • The KF7 Soviet is featured in Perfect Dark as the KF7 Special.
  • It is found in every St. Petersburg level except for Train.
  • In Depot it cannot be used without the Infinite Ammo cheat, due to the fact that the rifles there are empty of any ammo.
  • Due of the rifle's appearance, the KF7 Soviet is well known in the Goldeneye fanbase as the "pencil gun."
  • Ironically, this gun and the AR33 are seemingly reversed in raw power compared to their actual counterparts. The AK-47's rounds are bigger and heavier (7.62-39mm) than the M16's 5.56mm which are smaller but faster. Both real guns penetrate, but the former does it harder. The AR33 can pierce targets but the KF7 Soviet does not, and the former is stronger. However, both Goldeneye 007 weapons do match their real life counterparts in accuracy and fire rate.
  • The Phantom shares the same firing sound as this weapon.
ZMG (9mm)
GoldenEye 007 ZMG (9mm).

ZMG (9mm) is a fast-firing submachine gun with a 32-round magazine. It is often found paired in the hands of the Janus Special Forces in the game's later missions.

  • Rounds Per Clip: 32
  • Ammo: normal bullets
  • Speed: awesome
  • Damage: excellent
  • Noise: medium
  • Found: Train, Caverns, Cradle, Egyptian
  • Scope: n/a
  • Two?: yes
  • Multiplayer: yes
  • Cheats: n/a
  • The ZMG is a really good weapon. It is really fast, and when you have two, it is even faster! It is also REALLY powerful and can stun a guy for a while even if you only hit him once.
Notes
  • This weapon is a Micro Uzi submachine gun. No pre-release screenshots of the weapon using that name are known to exist. A text string found in Perfect Dark's Carrington Institute trailing text file calls it the Uzi 9mm.
  • The ZMG (9mm) is featured in Perfect Dark as the ZZT (9mm).
  • The ZMG is one of the two weapons that appeared in Perfect Dark's E3 trailer, the other being the Cougar Magnum.
  • Baron Samedi's second encounter in Egyptian has his dual DD44 Dostoveis perform as the ZMG.
D5K Deutsche
GoldenEye 007 D5K Deutsche.

The D5K Deutsche is an average submachine gun found in some of the game's missions. It is typically used by Janus Marines and is commonly found paired in later missions. A suppressed variation is only available in Frigate.

  • Rounds Per Clip: 30
  • Ammo: normal bullets
  • Speed: quick
  • Damage: good
  • Noise: loud
  • Found: Facility, Frigate, Depot, Train, Control
  • Scope: n/a
  • Two?: yes
  • Multiplayer: yes
  • Cheats: n/a
  • The Deutsche isn't really a very good weapon. It is not as fast as most other automatics, plus it is louder and does less damage.
Notes
  • This weapon is based on the real-world Heckler & Koch MP5K. No pre-release screenshots using this name are known to exist.
  • "Deutsche" means "German." The MP5K is a weapon of German origin.
  • The D5K is featured in Perfect Dark as the DMC.
  • The Golden Gun shares the same firing sound as the D5K.
D5K Deutsche (Silenced)
GoldenEye 007 D5K Deutsche Silenced.

This weapon is only found in Frigate. Bond uniquely starts with it in said mission with rather low ammunition instead of the PP7. It fires like the regular D5K, but has the ability of the Silenced PP7 noise reduction, making it useful to shoot enemies quickly and quietly. It shares the same firing sound as said weapon and the Sniper Rifle.

  • Rounds Per Clip: 30
  • Ammo: normal bullets
  • Speed: quick
  • Damage: good
  • Noise: quiet
  • Found: Frigate
  • Scope: n/a
  • Two?: n/a
  • Multiplayer: n/a
  • Cheats: n/a
  • You only get the Silenced D5K in one level (Frigate), so use it wisely! This is the only silenced machine gun
Notes
  • The All Guns cheat allows Bond to use this weapon in any other mission than Frigate.
  • Be careful of rapidly shooting targets with this weapon, especially when dual-wielded. Despite the auto-fire advantage over the Silenced PP7, enemy guards can still be alerted from a distance.
Phantom
GoldenEye 007 Phantom.

The Phantom is a powerful submachine gun found only in the mission Frigate. It is less accurate than the D5K but has greater damage and magazine capacity. The power of this weapon is equal to that of the AR33, but it doesn't have the penetration and accuracy of said weapon, the fire rate is slightly slower, and has no zoom. It has the same firing sound as the KF7 Soviet assault rifle.

  • Rounds Per Clip: 50
  • Ammo: normal bullets
  • Speed: quick
  • Damage: excellent
  • Noise: loud
  • Found: Frigate
  • Scope: n/a
  • Two?: yes
  • Multiplayer: n/a
  • Cheats: n/a
Trivia
  • During development this weapon was called the Spectre after its real-world counterpart. The name was presumably changed for legal reasons.
  • Spectre (although spelled SPECTRE) is also the name of the villain organization of Rosa Klebb and Donald "Red" Grant in the Bond film - From Russia With Love.
US AR33 Assault Rifle
GoldenEye 007 AR33 Assault Rifle.

The US AR33 Assault Rifle is a powerful rifle found in GoldenEye 007's later missions. It is equal in power as the Phantom, but much more accurate and with a longer zoom, than the KF7 Soviet, making it useful for picking off targets at a distance. Shots from this rifle will also penetrate though objects and enemies. Like the KF7 Soviet, it has a three round burst. Though one of the strongest automatic guns in the game, the RC-P90 outperforms it.

  • Rounds Per Clip: 30
  • Ammo: rifle bullets
  • Speed: awesome
  • Damage: excellent
  • Noise: loud
  • Found: Jungle, Caverns, Cradle, Aztec
  • Scope: Yes, larger than the Soviet, but smaller than the Sniper.
  • Two?: yes
  • Multiplayer: yes
  • Cheats: n/a
  • The AR33's large scope and great speed make it the best long range weapon. It especially comes in handy on the Jungle, where you need to do a lot of sniping through the trees. It's only real problem is that the AR33 tends to give you a sort of small ammo shortage when you start out a level, seeming as how it takes rifle bullets.
Notes
  • During development, this gun was called the Commando M16A/2, after its real-world counterpart. The name was presumably changed for legal reasons.
  • This rifle was much more common during the development of the game.
  • It is the strongest assault rifle in the game.
  • The AR33 is featured in Perfect Dark as the AR53.
RC-P90
GoldenEye 007 RC-P90.

The RC-P90 is a very powerful and accurate personal defense weapon with a massive ammo capacity and very rapid rate of fire. It is rare, only appearing in three of the game's missions. It is able to penetrate objects, including doors. A single shot causes slightly more damage than the Phantom or AR33, but its power is just short of the Cougar Magnum or Moonraker Laser.

  • Rounds Per Clip: 80
  • Ammo: normal bullets
  • Speed: awesome
  • Damage: awesome
  • Noise: medium
  • Found: Train (Agent Only), Jungle, Caverns
  • Scope: n/a
  • Two?: yes
  • Multiplayer: yes
  • Cheats: 2x RCP-90
  • The RCP-90 can really be described as the best weapon in the game. With a Huge clip, Awesome speed, and Unbelievable damage caused to those wimpy enemies. You can get 2 RCP-90s without the cheat. In the Caverns, if you hang out at the very end, some guys will come, some of which have 2 RCP-90s.
Trivia & Notes
  • This weapon is based on the real-world FN P90. No prerelease screenshots using this name are known to exist, but an unused text string, which can be found for it in Perfect Dark. This string seems to have been lifted from the ones used by GoldenEye 007's inventory during development.
  • Following the previous note, the weapon's real life counterpart, only holds up to 50 bullets in its magazine.
  • Following the mention in the first note, it appears that the RC-P90's 80 round magazine was likely a mistake by the developers. This is because RC-P90, apparently uses "0x50," which in "hexadecimal" is "80," and for it to have 50 bullets, it should have been "directly" given "0x32," which is "50" in "decimal."
  • It's possible that this weapon's fictional name was inspired by the "Reality Co-Processor," the Nintendo 64's graphics processing chip.
  • In the Water Caverns, it is possible to find guards dual wielding the RC-P90. These guards will only show up after Trevelyan disappears into the elevator.
  • This gun is a popular favorite among the Goldeneye 007 fanbase.
  • The RC-P90 is featured in Perfect Dark as the RC-P45.
  • The weapon was voted #4 in GameFly's "Best. Weapons. Ever."
  • The RC-P90 was #6 on UGO's list of "The 50 Best Weapons of All Time."
  • The RC-P90 has the largest magazine capacity in the game.
Shotgun
GoldenEye 007 Shotgun.

The Shotgun is a weapon that can fire five pellets ahead of Bond in a cone shape, making it nearly worthless over long distances but useful at short range. Each pellet does less damage than an average strength weapon (such as the PP7) but a target hit by all five pellets will take as much damage as if they had been hit by the Cougar Magnum or Moonraker Laser. It is in every way inferior to the Automatic Shotgun and was most likely removed from the game for this reason.

  • Rounds Per Clip: 5
  • Ammo: cartridges
  • Speed: slow
  • Damage: better the closer you are to enemy
  • Noise: blasting
  • Found: Use the All Guns Cheat
  • Scope: n/a
  • Two?: n/a
  • Multiplayer: n/a
  • Cheats: All Guns Only
Notes
  • This weapon can only be obtained using cheats; it is not found in normal gameplay.
  • During beta development, the shotgun was available in Archives.
  • The shotgun is tied with the tank for being the loudest weapon in the game.
  • This shotgun is based on the Remington 870 folding stock.
  • This weapon has a unique model, which can only be seen by hacking.
  • When the player reloads the Shotgun with 4 or less shells in reserve, the shells in the rack on top of the gun will be used. This is, however, a completely cosmetic change.
Automatic Shotgun
GoldenEye 007 Automatic Shotgun.

The Automatic Shotgun is a weapon variant of the normal Shotgun (which is not normally found in the game). It fires five pellets ahead of Bond in a cone shape, making it almost worthless at long distances but extremely effective at short range.

This weapon is slightly faster then its original counterpart and the cone range is not as wide, making it useful against groups of enemies at short range in open areas. Each pellet does less damage than a normal strength weapon but a target hit by all five pellets will take even more damage than if they had been hit by the Cougar Magnum or Moonraker Laser.

The Automatic Shotgun is superior to the regular Shotgun in every way. It surpasses in terms of accuracy and damage, and has lower recoil and noise. It is only found in Statue, but Trevelyan does wield one in Caverns although he never fires it.

  • Rounds Per Clip: 5
  • Ammo: cartridges
  • Speed: slow
  • Damage: better the closer you are to enemy
  • Noise: blasting
  • Found: Statue, Caverns
  • Scope: n/a
  • Two?: n/a
  • Multiplayer: yes
  • Cheats: n/a
  • The Automatic Shotgun is a bit more practical than the normal shotgun as it is a little quicker to fire.
Notes
  • The Automatic Shotgun was originally supposed to be available in Frigate. It was possibly removed for balance reasons.
  • Many pre-release screen shots show the Automatic Shotgun, one of them being a shot of the watch with 6 bars.
  • The Automatic Shotgun appears to be based on the Franchi SPAS-12. When the player reloads the Automatic Shotgun with four shells or less in reserve, the shells in the rack on the gun will be used. This is a completely cosmetic change; the number of shells in the rack has no effect on the function of the weapon.
  • Although normally only found in Statue, the All Guns cheat allows Bond to obtain it in any other mission.
  • In Caverns, it is possible to find guards with this weapon after Trevelyan escapes into the elevator.
  • This weapon is dangerous under enemy guards' hands, as being hit from the Automatic Shotgun inflicts the full damage on Bond regardless of range and they fire it much faster than the player.
Sniper Rifle
GoldenEye 007 Sniper Rifle.

Sniper Rifle is a weapon fitted with a long-range scope and an undetachable suppressor, and is unique from other weapons in that that its long zoom range can be adjusted using the up and down C Buttons when in Aim mode. The weapon becomes increasingly hard to aim the greater the distance between Bond and his target, simulating real life.

The Sniper Rifle is intended to be used for eliminating targets in the distance, meaning it is recommended for stages with large outdoor areas like Dam and Surface. The weapon can, however, be used effectively at medium and short range. Its damage and firing rate is comparable to the Silenced PP7. Anytime the Sniper Rifle is in possession, Unarmed will be replaced with its stock.

  • Rounds Per Clip: 8
  • Ammo: rifle
  • Speed: ok
  • Damage: good
  • Noise: silent
  • Found: Dam, Surface 1
  • Scope: Yes, it's long range and adjustable.
  • Two?: n/a
  • Multiplayer: yes
  • Cheats: n/a
  • Sniper Rifles are not used much in the game, but when you get one, fill it up with Soviet bullets and use it. To adjust the scope, use the Up and Down C Buttons, up to make things bigger, down to make things smaller.
Trivia
  • Auto-aim does not work with this weapon.
  • On the right side of the weapon, a long cylindrical tubular attachment is mounted toward the right of the sniper scope. This presumably is a range finder, however, this attachment serves no function in the game, whatsoever.
  • The Sniper Rifle can be dual wielded, though this requires use of cheats.
  • This weapon shares the same firing sound as the Silenced PP7 and Silenced D5K.
Cougar Magnum
GoldenEye 007 Cougar Magnum.

The Cougar Magnum is a powerful weapon in GoldenEye 007, comparable in power to the Moonraker Laser. It can penetrate through multiple doors and bulletproof glass. The Magnum is a strong weapon in multiplayer mode, but it is also very slow, requiring precise aiming to use effectively. While it has a low rate of fire, the Cougar Magnum can be a useful weapon, due to its high power and great accuracy. A shot to the head can be an instant kill. Natalya noticeably uses it in the Jungle and Control missions, but the weapon itself is unavailable without cheats.

  • Rounds Per Clip: 6
  • Ammo: magnum
  • Speed: slow
  • Damage: awesome
  • Noise: blasting
  • Found: Use a Cheat
  • Scope: n/a
  • Two?: n/a
  • Multiplayer: yes
  • Cheats: Magnum
  • The Cougar Magnum is that really loud gun that Natalya uses in the Jungle. The Magnum is loud, slow, and REALLY powerful! The Cougar's most useful function is that it can shoot through doors, which comes in handy in Multiplayer.
Trivia
  • During development, the Cougar Magnum was called both the Ruger Magnum and the Blackhawk Magnum after its real-world counterpart.
  • This weapon cannot be obtained in solo without cheats. Natalya Simonova carries this weapon in Jungle and Control, but will not drop it even after being killed.
  • The Cougar Magnum was featured in Perfect Dark's prerelease trailer. It was carried by NSA Director Trent Easton, but the weapon was left out in the final version of the game and replaced with the DY357 Magnum.
  • According to the instruction manual of GoldenEye, the Cougar Magnum is "possibly the most powerful revolver in the world." This is likely a reference to the movie Dirty Harry, where the titular character states his .44 Magnum (which is the caliber the real-life Blackhawk fires) is "the most powerful handgun in the world."
  • The PP7 has a special variant based on the Cougar Magnum, called the Silver PP7.
Golden Gun
GoldenEye 007 Golden Gun.

The Golden Gun is the villain Francisco Scaramanga's signature weapon of choice in the 1974 Bond film The Man with the Golden Gun, and is the strongest weapon in GoldenEye 007 (alongside the Gold PP7). Its only appearance is in the bonus mission Egyptian, but it is available afterwards as its own cheat. The Golden Gun is a high-risk, high-kill type of weapon, because it only holds one bullet at a time and must be reloaded every time it is fired. Due to its extreme power, it can kill any enemy with a single shot.

The Golden Gun is also available in multiplayer in its own weapon set titled, fittingly enough, Golden Gun. It is also the main focus of The Man With The Golden Gun scenario.

In order to get the Golden Gun in Egyptian, Bond must walk through a room only touching the correct floor tiles. If he steps on the wrong tile, a bulletproof glass shield will surround the weapon and its ammunition, and four alcoves containing drone guns will open. Bond must then flee the room in order to close the drone gun alcoves, which will allow him to attempt the tile puzzle again.

  • Rounds Per Clip: 1
  • Ammo: golden
  • Speed: slow
  • Damage: one hit death
  • Noise: medium
  • Found: Egyptian
  • Scope: n/a
  • Two?: n/a
  • Multiplayer: yes
  • Cheats: Golden Gun
  • Scaramanga's Legendary Golden Gun causes any enemy, from Russian Soldier to Janus Marine to die with only a single bullet. The down side is that it only holds one bullet, making the time between firings seem like an eternity. That might be why most people prefer the Gold PP7 over the Golden Gun. On an interesting note, in Ian Fleming's book "The Man With the Golden Gun," Scaramanga used a gold plated Colt 45 as his weapon, which can hold six bullets. More practical than the Golden Gun from the movie of the same name.
Trivia
  • This weapon is used by the notorious assassin Francisco Scaramanga in The Man with the Golden Gun. In the film, Scaramanga can disassemble the Golden Gun into several pieces to disguise it as everyday objects:
    1. A fountain pen for the barrel
    2. A lighter for the breech
    3. A cigarette case for the grip
    4. A cuff-link for the trigger

All of these objects are gold plated, which lead to the weapon being named The Golden Gun. Scaramanga obtains multiple one-hit kills with the Golden Gun, leading to its eponymous ability of one-hit kills in the James Bond games. The background section of Egyptian's briefing mentions Scaramanga, calling him the deadliest assassin of all time. In his own words about his marksmanship skills and perhaps the raw power of the Golden Gun, he says in the film "I only need one."

The Golden Gun has the same firing sound as the D5K Deutsche.

The PP7 has a special variant of this weapon, called the Gold PP7.

Perfect Dark contains a homage weapon of the Golden Gun, called the DY357-LX, owned by NSA Director Trent Easton. Like its GoldenEye 007 counterpart and the Gold PP7, it is gold-plated and kills any enemy with 1 shot. Interestingly, it closely resembles Scaramanga's weapon from the 1965 The Man of the Golden Gun novel by Ian Fleming as both are revolvers (though a Colt Python instead of a Colt. 45). It could be pure coincidence that the DY357-LX is in fact the original Golden Gun.

Multiplayer Notes

In Multiplayer, if a character has +10 health from the handicap option in the multiplayer setup, plus body armor, and then is shot once in the limbs, they will survive with all their armor destroyed and their health with six out of eight bars on the watch reticule remaining. With this knowledge it is possible to survive up to 4 shots without dying under the conditions listed above (You would have to pick up another body armor after every shot). This also works for the Gold PP7.

Other Notes

The Golden Gun is able to kill ALL characters in one hit, with the exception for:

  • Baron Samedi's 3rd phase, when shooting the limb. It takes 2-3 shots on the limb. Chest may take 2 shots and the head takes 1 shot.
  • In 007 mode, with 1000% health setting, Jaws can take more than one shot.
  • Enemies in invulnerable states due to programming conditions on when characters take damage or not. Examples include Trevelyan in Statue and Caverns as he is unkillable in those levels. This can easily be experimented with cheats.
Silver PP7
GoldenEye 007 Silver PP7.

The Silver PP7 is a special PP7 with silver plating and the raw penetration and power of the Cougar Magnum. It fires as quickly as the normal and silenced PP7, giving it an advantage over the magnum.

  • Rounds Per Clip: 7
  • Ammo: normal
  • Speed: good
  • Damage: varies
  • Noise: medium
  • Found: Use a Cheat
  • Scope: n/a
  • Two?: n/a
  • Multiplayer: yes
  • Cheat: Silver PP7
  • The Silver PP7 takes the same ammo and has the same speed and loudness of a normal PP7. But, the damage system is a bit different. On normal mode, one hit to the chest or head will usually kill you. But, a hit to the leg or arm will not! This scale does not work for when you fiddle with 007 mode, causing enemies with 1000% health to be able to take multiple hits to the head without dropping. It can shoot through doors, objects, and enemies, something the Gold PP7 cannot do.
Trivia
  • This weapon can only be obtained using cheats; to earn this weapon, the level Train must be beaten on 00 Agent in 5:25 or less.
  • The Silver PP7 uses the normal PP7's third person model.
  • The Silver PP7 can be fired faster by holding the fire button and pressing the weapon switch button or press Z quickly.
  • The Silver PP7 is able to shoot through doors and bulletproof glass, an ability shared with the Cougar Magnum and Moonraker Laser.
  • With the strength of the Cougar Magnum and silver coloring, it can be considered it transforms the Walther PPK (the weapon the PP7 is based on) essentially like a Desert Eagle 50 AE.
Gold PP7
GoldenEye 007 Gold PP7.

The Gold PP7 is a special PP7 with gold plating and the instant kill ability of the Golden Gun, therefore is the most powerful weapon in the game (tied with the Golden Gun in raw power). Like the normal and silenced PP7, it has a seven round magazine, giving it a huge advantage over the Golden Gun.

  • Rounds Per Clip: 7
  • Ammo: normal
  • Speed: good
  • Damage: One Hit Death
  • Noise: medium
  • Found: Use a Cheat
  • Scope: n/a
  • Two?: n/a
  • Multiplayer: n/a
  • Cheat: Gold PP7
  • The Gold PP7 is more popular than it's predecessor, the Golden Gun, because it is faster, holds more ammo, and takes a more common kind of bullet.
Trivia
  • This weapon can only be obtained using cheats; it is unlocked by completing Cradle on Agent in under 2:15.
  • The Gold PP7 uses the normal PP7's third person model.
  • The Gold PP7 can be fired faster by holding the fire button and pressing the weapon switch button or press Z quickly.
  • Interestingly, in the Man with the Golden Gun film, when Scaramanga proposes Bond for a duel, he says the words "My Golden Gun against your Walther PPK," with Bond responding "6 bullets to your one". Noticeably, the Gold PP7 is technically their trademark pistols fused into one, as not only the gun's design, gold coloring and extreme power match, even the 7 round magazine lines up.
Moonraker Laser/Military Laser
GoldenEye 007 Moonraker/Military Laser.

The Moonraker Laser is a very powerful weapon comparable in power to the Cougar Magnum but with a much higher rate of fire and no magazine or ammunition limitations. It can normally only be found in Aztec but two cheats exist specifically to give Bond this weapon in any mission.

Bond can run over enemies with the tank, thus squishing them. In addition, being in a tank makes Bond heavily armored, making him highly resistant (but not invincible) to gunfire or explosives.

  • The Laser can usually cause either a one hit, or a two hit death on those pesky Moonraker geeks. The good thing about is that it never runs out of ammo, so you can just run around the level holding the fire button, and those enemies won't have a chance! The laser's one con is that it takes a little while to fire once you hit Z, which is actually a pretty small con. The Moonraker can also shoot through doors...and people.
Notes
  • The Moonraker Laser is called the "Military Laser" in the watch menu.
  • The Laser was much more common in pre-release versions of the game, appearing in the Facility, Bunker 1, and Silo levels. It was probably only used for testing and never intended to actually appear in those missions.
  • In the Moonraker movie, the real Moonraker Laser was a prop that is based around a plastic toy Uzi.
  • The Moonraker Laser is able to shoot through doors, crates, guards and other objects similarly to the Cougar Magnum and Silver PP7. (Note: Though it passes through bulletproof glass, it may not damage enemies like the Magnum does as its penetration ability is less in comparison.)
Glitche

There is a rare glitch that can occasionally occur from whenever a guard is dual-wielding the lasers. This can occur whenever a guard tries to perform the offensive combat roll, and then open fire with both lasers after standing back. After this action, the guard may become stuck on his shooting animation, will not fire any shots, and will simply just stand still with his lasers aiming at where he was going to fire. He will not react to Bond at all or move out of this glitch until he is shot and wounded or killed. This same effect may also occur in the Egyptian level when Baron Samedi's DD44 Dostoveis are equipped with Moonraker Lasers when Bond faces him for the third and final time.

Grenade Launcher
GoldenEye 007 Grenade Launcher.

Grenade Launcher is a weapon that fires special, Grenade-Launcher-only grenades in an arc. Unlike hand grenades, grenade rounds detonate after shorter time when contacting the ground, and can detonate immediately after firing in long distance, but the distance may actually range. With proper skill, it is possible to take advantage of the grenade's ability to bounce, launching them around corners, through windows, and other situations to hit targets in other rooms.

This weapon can only be found in the first Surface level inside the hut with the Russian Commandant, in the Streets level after being dropped by a Russian Soldier, in the small indoor area past Zukovsky and next to some body armor near the start of the level, and in Jungle, where it is being held by Onatopp dually with the RC-P90. This odd combination of weapons can be obtained after defeating her.

  • The grenades also explode on contact, making them easy to handle. The Grenade Launchers major con is that it's hard to hit things that are really far away, but this can be improved with practice.
Rocket Launcher
GoldenEye 007 Rocket Launcher.

Rocket Launcher is a weapon that fires a single RPG missile attached to the front of the launcher. It must be reloaded after each shot, making it a slow weapon. The rocket launcher can only be obtained in Streets and Depot but has two cheats dedicated to it, including one that gives it to every guard in at the start of a mission.

  • The best strategy to use, especially in Multiplayer is to aim for the floor or wall next to where the enemy is.
Notes
  • The appearance and magazine size of the rocket launcher changed during development, and was shoulder-fired instead of handheld. It could hold three rockets at once, which could be fired in rapid succession.
  • The rocket launcher was available in Aztec at one time.
  • Rockets are subject to gravity; while at first it appears they travel upwards forever, they will eventually come crashing back to earth. The best place to see this is in Surface 1 and Surface 2, where there are large, open areas.
  • The rocket launcher appears to be based on the Type-69 RPG however it has been painted grey and has no wood grain finish on it.
Grenade
GoldenEye 007 Grenade.

Grenade is a throwable and explosive weapon that can be obtained from almost every mission (except Dam). While it's rare to find an actual grenade pickup (like the crates in Runway), almost any guard can pull out a grenade and throw it at Bond. Grenades are difficult weapons to use as they have a timed fuse; Bond has to anticipate where his target will be when the grenade explodes. For this reason grenades are much more useful against stationary targets, like security mainframes. Guards won't react to a grenade being thrown at them unless they also see Bond.

  • The grenade is the only weapon that can be found in every level. You just have to get a guy to take one out before you kill him. Once you have a grenade, press and hold Z, and count to four. Release Z once you hit four! Watch out, the grenade explodes five seconds after the pin is pulled, even if you're still holding it at the time.
Notes
  • If a guard is shot after they pull the pin on their grenade, they will hold onto the grenade until they are killed. They will drop the grenade which is not possible to pick-up due to its pin pulled and it is about to explode. If they are killed before the pulling of the pin happens, however, grenade may sometimes be completely invisible. It can be picked up when it is clear that the guard didn't pull the pin on it. The grenade can also be shot while it is still in their hand to cause it to explode.
  • Pressing and holding the fire button will pull the grenade's pin and prepare it for throw. It can then be "cooked" to throw at enemies and objects. If the grenade is held without its pin for too long, however, it will explode. Oddly enough, guards who do that similar action, don't have their grenades exploded.
  • Scientists are able to throw grenades, and use them much more often then some of the guards. They will do this, if they are first provoked to pull out a DD44 pistol to attack Bond.
  • It is possible to destroy the communications link in Surface 2 without obtaining the room key. Simply throw a grenade through the window in back of the antenna building. However, it can be very difficult on any difficulty higher than Secret Agent.
Proximity Mine
GoldenEye 007 Proximity Mine.

Proximity Mines is a weapon that is one of three types of mines found in GoldenEye, the other two being timed mines and remote mines. Proximity mines detonate whenever a moving object is within their range, making them perfect for taking out patrolling guards but wasteful for stationary objects.

  • Rounds Per Clip: n/a

  • Cheat: n/a
  • It is used mainly in Multiplayer. Just throw the mine, wait a second or two, (to arm it) then when someone walks by...BOOM! Proximity mines can also be set off if another mine is placed right next to the first one, causing both of them to explode.
Notes
  • There is a short time after placing a mine before it becomes active. Use this time to get out of its range.

  • In multiplayer players can attach mines to ammo crates and then quickly pickup the ammo before the mine arms itself. This will cause the mine to become invisible and thus even deadlier.
Timed Mine
GoldenEye 007 Timed Mine.

Timed Mines is a weapon that is one of three types of mines found in GoldenEye 007, the other two being proximity mines and remote mines. Timed mines detonate shortly after being placed, making them good for destroying stationary objects but less so for guards.

  • Rounds Per Clip: n/a

  • Found: Runway, Caverns
  • Scope: n/a
  • Two?: n/a
  • Multiplayer: yes
  • Cheat: n/a
  • The only place to use the timed mines is when blowing up the Missile Battery on the Runway.
Notes
  • These mines were probably inspired by the mines Bond used to destroy the bottling tanks in Facility in the GoldenEye film.
  • According to Nintendo Power Issue 093, the timed mines originally had a one-minute timer.
Remote Mine
GoldenEye 007 Remote Mine.

Remote Mine (or Mine (Remote)) is a weapon that is one of the three types of mines found in GoldenEye 007, the other two being Timed Mines and Proximity Mines. Remote mines are arguably more useful than the other types of mines as they can be detonated at any time.

  • Rounds Per Clip: n/a

  • Multiplayer: yes
  • Cheat: n/a
  • You throw them, they arm, and then you detonate them later. You can also use the A+B trick to detonate a mine right after you throw it, causing it to explode in midair, making remote mines quite the combat weapon.
Detonator

Detonator is a weapon that always comes paired with the remote mine, in the appearance of a watch. Pressing the fire button causes it to detonate any remote mines Bond has placed.

GoldenEye 007 Remote Mine Detonator.

From left to right - the view of the detonator in the watch menu; the view of the detonator from first person

Notes
  • Remote mines can be detonated at any time by pressing the A Button and B Button at the same time while the remote mines are the active weapon. This allows mines to be detonated much faster than switching to the detonator and can be a life saver (or ender) in Multiplayer. In the hands of a skilled player, this is arguably the deadliest explosive in the game.
  • Only six remote mines can be detonated at a time. The behavior of any mines over this amount changes based on the version of the game being played.
  • The Three mines are based on the remote mine seen in the GoldenEye film
  • Placing mines on ammo crates in multiplayer causes the mines to become invisible when the ammo crate is picked up. The mines can still be manually detonated after this.
Taser
GoldenEye 007 Taser.

The Taser is a stun gun-like weapon in GoldenEye 007, only available when the All Guns cheat is active. The gun appears to be a "Joke Weapon". The words "Tazer Boy" are printed on the top-left corner of the weapon, a screen with a scrolling Bond silhouette, and the weapon itself resembles a hybrid between a real taser and the Game Boy Pocket (1996 compact redesign of the original Game Boy). The Taser functions more like a pistol than an actual stun gun: it fires a single "bullet" while playing an electric zap sound effect. It is not a very powerful weapon but perfectly accurate with no recoil. Also like the Moonraker Laser it has no magazine or ammo restriction.

Tank
GoldenEye 007 Remote Mine.

The Tank is a heavily armored vehicle, that Bond can utilize for his own use. When fired, the shell will fly out of the cannon. This weapon is similar to a combination of a grenade launcher and rocket launcher, it fires shells in an arc like the grenade launcher but they explode on contact with anything like a rocket launcher.

Bond can run over enemies with the tank, thus squishing them. In addition, being in a tank makes Bond heavily armored, making him highly resistant (but not invincible) to gunfire or explosives.

  • Rounds Per Clip: 1

  • Damage: explosion
  • Noise: blasting
  • Found: Runway, Streets
  • Scope: n/a
  • Two?: n/a
  • Multiplayer: yes
  • Cheat: n/a
  • The Tank as a vehicle is technically not a weapon. The shells cause a regular explosion, but they take a REALLY long time between shots. If you're using the All Guns cheat, you can have tank shells even without the tank.
Notes
  • The Tank Cannon doesn't actually require the tank vehicle itself to work; it is available with the All Guns cheat, with the shells simply shooting out of the player character's face. However, the tank's armor and running-over abilities require the vehicle itself.
  • The Tank Cannon itself, will not clip through walls, and instead actually get stuck there, unless it is moved to a different side.
  • The damage when inside the Tank is roughly 1/4 the amount you normally take.

Enemies

Anywhere but the Face

GoldenEye has a body-hit detecting system, where if you shoot someone in the leg they will take a small amount of damage, but a shot to the head almost gurantees a kill! However, if you want to stall someone instead of actually killing them, shoot them in the foot, the knee, or the hand, because they will hold it for several seconds and will not do anything.

Guards Are Listening

Yeah, it's true. Guards can hear all the noise you make, unless you don't make any noise at all...in which case they couldn't hear you, because there's nothing to hear! Wow, it shows how easy it is to make something so simple complicated!

If you use a KF7 Soviet (a loud gun) then all the guards will come rushing to see what's the matter, but if you use a silenced weapon (usually the PP7) then no one will hear you. So always remember this.

Siberian Guard (Arkangelsk)

GoldenEye 007 Siberian Guard (Arkangelsk)Siberian Guard (Arkangelsk) (Otherwise known as just Siberian Guard) is the name of the first enemy in GoldenEye 007. The name given is mostly credited to the community, because there is another variant of Siberian Guards, found in St. Petersburg levels. The name itself was probably mistakenly seen twice in the credits and Multiplayer mode character selection screen, because the two guards are actually not the same. They are only found in the Dam and Runway missions. They wear brown military overcoats and they sometimes wear berets (mostly in Runway), but never wear any armor. In Runway, they also often wear russian Ushanka hats. Their primary mission objective, seems to be to guard the perimeter of the Chemical Warfare Facility #2; on top of it guarding the Dam and outside of it guarding the Runway. They are never met in the Facility mission, or any mission after Runway.

As the first enemies that are met in GoldenEye 007, they have very low accuracy and reaction, unlike the Moonraker Elite, which have very high of both.

Levels
  • Dam
  • Runway
Weapons Used

The only weapon they carry and use is the KF7 Soviet. It appears to be the standard issue of the Soviet Military. They never throw any grenades, unlike Russian Soldiers, or any other guard and enemy.

Multiplayer
  • They are the 28th character on the roster.
  • They are permanently available after the Antenna Cradle stage has been beaten.
Trivia
  • In the Bond film GoldenEye, Siberian Guards were chasing Bond to the Service Runway.
  • They never use any other weapon besides the KF7 Soviet, and they almost never throw grenades.
  • Due to their low reaction speed, it is possible to quickly overcome these enemies.
  • The word Arkangelsk is misspelled in the original GoldenEye 007. The correct spelling of this word would be - Archangelsk or Arkhangelsk.
Russian Soldier

GoldenEye 007 Russian SoldierThe Russian Soldier is a Russian military guard armed with a variety of weapons and wearing a green uniform, with a russian Side Cap called "Pilotka." They are the most abundant of enemies in Goldeneye 007, and appear in several missions. They seem to be under the command of Colonel Ourumov (later general) and the various commandants. In Mission 1 (Dam, Facility, Runway) their main objective is to protect the chemical weapons facility. In Bunker I, they guard the GoldenEye satellite key from falling into enemy hands. In Mission 6, and their final appearance (Archives and Streets), they are ordered by General Ourumov to eliminate Bond and try to stop him after his escape.

Levels
  • Dam
  • Facility
  • Runway
  • Bunker (i)
  • Archives
  • Streets
Weapons Used

The Russian Soldiers may carry 4 weapons, these include: Klobb (Service Runway and some others (Sometimes used dually)), KF7 Soviets (Dam, Facility...), Grenade Launchers, and Rocket Launchers (Streets only). Their main weapon is "KF7 Soviet". Russian Soldiers are allowed to use Rocket Launchers in the Street level, to counter the Tank that Bond may want to use. In that same level, only one of them will carry a Grenade Launcher.

Tactical Analysis
  • Russian Soldiers will try to avoid getting shot by Bond, but in most cases, will just stand still and shoot from this stance. They seem to shoot from the hip whenever they are standing and shooting, though sometimes they seem to aim from the shoulder even though their KF7 Soviet lacks stock, like the original weapon it was taken.
  • They have low HP and can usually be killed in 3 or 4 shots in chest, and 1 shot in the head (as headshots triple the damage).
  • Russian Soldiers tend to randomly decide what to do immediately following Bond; they may open fire, take a knee and open fire, combat-roll, or perhaps simply rush toward Bond and then shoot. Or they may stop following Bond and stand completely still all of a sudden after running away from them to a safe distance and waiting.
  • Their accuracy is somewhat subpar, but Russian Soldiers appear in large numbers. They don't reload their weapons, and will continually shoot long full-auto bursts at the player without running out of ammo. Their hitting and damaging varies in difficulty: if on Agent difficulty, they will rarely ever hit their target, and once they do, their damage will not be too significant, then on 00 Agent difficulty it will be much more significant, and their target will be hit once every burst of their fire.
  • Russian Soldiers, when not alerted, will either follow a certain path or stand in place. They have a short delay before they are alerted; a player can often peek from a corner and kill a Russian Soldier before they can react.
  • It should be understood that Russian Soldiers do not actively flank the player intentionally- their tactics are limited to shooting and attempting to dodge bullets coming their way.
Multiplayer
  • They are the 13th character on the roster.
  • They are permanently available after the Antenna Cradle stage has been beaten.
Trivia
  • Like in GoldenEye 007, in the original movie Russian Soldiers were the most frequently-seen hostile characters.
  • Russian soldiers vary in their headgear; most wear nothing or "Pilotka" side caps, while some wear steel helmets.
  • The Klobb russian soldiers in the Bunker 1 and Archives wear red berets. In Runway, these soldiers don't wear berets.
Russian Commandant

GoldenEye 007 Russian CommandantThe Russian Commandant is found in the Dam, Surface I, and Bunker I levels. Unlike most generic enemy characters, there are exactly only three in the GoldenEye 007. They seem to be the head officers of their respective operations. Most Russian Commandants in GoldenEye 007 (Dam and Bunker), take considerable amount of damage to kill (even more then the amount of damage used to kill Russian Soldiers or Siberian Guard (Arkangelsk)), however, the one in Bunker I, will practically have the same amount of damage to kill, as the aforementioned guards. Also, in Dam, in particular, in that same guard shack, there will be a single Russian Soldier who takes that same amount of damage to kill as the Commandant there. Also, it can be noted that, being that they are the commanders of these guards, they don't have weaponry as superior as they do. These commandants are in charge of different things, depending on the location:

  • The one in the Dam is in charge of protecting the Dam and its data. He is found in a guard shack.
  • The one in the Surface I is in charge of protecting the communications dish and holds the key to a certain cabin, where another key can be found. He is found in a much different cabin.
  • The one in Bunker I is in charge of protecting the GoldenEye satellite key and its data. He is found in an additional room in the main hall where the GoldenEye key is held.

They all wear brown Service Alpha uniforms with a Sam Browne belt, and wear an officer's cap, similar to that of Ourumov.

Levels
  • Dam
  • Surface 1
  • Bunker 1
Weapons Used

Each Russian Commandant uses a different weapon:

In the Dam, he uses a single DD44 Dostovei, a pistol familiar with military officers of the Soviet Union in GoldenEye 007.

In Surface I, he uses a single Klobb, and holds a key which may need to be recovered.

In Bunker I, he (oddly) uses a PP7 Special Issue. In this level, he can also throw hand grenades. The odd weapon choice of this commandant in this mission, may be because of the JSF reinforcements after the alarm has been sounded off.

Multiplayer
  • They are the 17th character on the roster.
Scientist

GoldenEye 007 Scientist.Scientist is the name of all scientists that are usually found in the levels and missions of GoldenEye 007. The name that was given to them is partially credited to the community, because there was also another variant of scientists, which is female, and this variant wasn't used, as this variant of scientists never seems to appear in GoldenEye 007. They are normally found in the Facility, Silo, and Caverns levels. In Facility, they are working on chemical weapons for the Soviet Military. In Silo, they are working on rocketry for the Russian military. In Caverns, the Janus Syndicate scientists control the pumps that make the GoldenEye satellite submerge or emerge from the ground. It is unknown if they work for Janus or if they are being forced to help. A lot or all of scientists cannot be killed, because it will ultimately fail the objective known as "Minimize Scientist Casualties". As a result, the kills of scientists that were done prior to this mission objective's failure, may be deemed as accidental.

Levels
  • Facility: Soviet Military
  • Silo: Russian Military>li>
  • Caverns: Janus Crime Syndicate
Weapons Used

The Scientist does not normally use weapons. However, on Secret Agent, 00 Agent, or 007 difficulties, the scientist can pull out a weapon under certain conditions. A weapon must be pointed at a scientist until he is in the surrender position, then must be shot in a limb. He will try to shake off the pain and surrender again. Shoot him in a limb and after he shakes off the pain once more, he will reach into his coat and pull out a DD44 Dostovei and start shooting. After a while, but more frequently in Facility, he will pull out a Hand Grenade. Even though he attacks you, you still cannot kill too many scientists without failing the mission. With the All Guns cheat, it is possible to make a scientist hostile on Agent difficulty using a Klobb or a Shotgun.

Multiplayer
  • They are the 15th character on the roster.
  • They only become permanently available for play after the Antenna Cradle stage is beaten.
  • The Male Scientist in multiplayer is the same character model as Dr. Doak.

General Ourumov

GoldenEye 007 General Ourumov.General Ourumov, full name Arkady Grigorovich Ourumov (Аркадий Григоревич Урумов (Russian)) was a rogue and merciless Russian colonel (later general) who joined the Army of the Soviet Union at the age of 18 and is one of the main villains. He most notably appears in Arkangelsk missions, such as Facility, but is also met in several others. He is first known to be at rank of Colonel, but later he gains military rank of General.

Background

Ourumov always had a zeal for power, and would constantly use any means necessary to get his way to the top. 27 years later, Ourumov, who had grown tiresome of having little power, was finally promoted to Colonel and was given the important job of being in charge of a Soviet Russian Chemical Weapons Factory. During his early days in his new position he meets a young and bitter Alec Trevelyan, who tells Ourumov of his past, his hatred for MI6 and his future intentions, but making sure to leave out a few vital details about himself. Alec offers Ourumov a part in his plan and that he will be paid well and receive his status as the next "Iron Man Of Russia", Ourumov graciously accepts. The two pledge not to see each other until Alec Trevelyan and James Bond were to go on a mission to destroy Ourumov's base. However, Ourumov and Trevelyan had different plans. Trevelyan deliberately gets himself caught by Ourumov and his men, and Bond witnesses Ourumov shooting Trevelyan in the head. Ourumov attempts to catch Bond and almost succeeds, but Bond just manages to escape.

The shooting was staged, however. Unbeknownst to Bond, Trevelyan is alive, albeit deeply scarred on the right side of his face. He becomes an international terrorist under the name "Janus" (The two-faced Roman god). Ourumov, supposed to be executed for the destruction of the chemical weapons base, frames one of his soldiers for the incident and is instead promoted to the rank of General, and is placed in charge of the Severnaya Space Facility in Siberia. Ourumov also has the job of employing another member for The Janus Crime Syndicate - he hires Xenia Onatopp, an ex-Soviet fighter pilot, whom he is familiar with. For the next nine years The Janus Crime Syndicate would terrorize Russia without getting caught and all their identities remaining secret, and Ourumov was earning more power, which was starting to trouble the Russian Government.

A year before the main plot of GoldenEye takes place, Ourumov completes the establishment of their syndicate's greatest weapon: "GoldenEye". Two GoldenEye satellite dishes were built: one in Siberia, and one hidden in Cuba. Anyone who became suspicious of Ourumov ended up dead at the hands, or perhaps the thighs, of Xenia. The Syndicate's first act is the theft of the Tiger helicopter - Ourumov and Xenia personally took care of the operation under the strict order of Janus not to fail. They successfully manage to steal it before Bond can stop them, and arrive in Siberia hours later where the second act of their operation would take place. Ourumov made sure to hire the most intelligent computer programmer to take care of the GoldenEye weapon: Boris Grishenko. Ourumov and Xenia enter the satellite base where the corrupt general orders one of his men to give him the GoldenEye and authorization codes they need to testfire the GoldenEye. Upon receiving these, Xenia suddenly shoots everyone in the base, and together they arm the GoldenEye to fire on Severnaya in order to eliminate the evidence. The two leave, pleased with their success, not knowing one person is still alive - Natalya Simonova.

Ourumov and Xenia take Boris with them and escape moments before the GoldenEye weapon detonates, and their witness, Natalya, narrowly escapes. Afterwards, Ourumov heads back to Russia to report to Defence Minister Dimitri Mishkin. Ourumov soon learns that Natalya Simonova is alive and he leaves immediately, frustrated with Xenia's failure to kill "everyone". He assigns Boris and Xenia to find her, which doesn't take them long. Ourumov takes Natalya to Trevelyan's hideout, where he ties her up in the Tiger helicopter to await her death. Bond also ends up in the helicopter, moments after learning that Trevelyan is alive and that he is a traitor. Bond and Natalya escape moments before the Tiger helicopter's heat-seeking missiles fire back on itself, but they are soon caught by Russian troops and taken to the military intelligence archives and locked in a prison cell.

Later, upon hearing that Dimitri Mishkin has Bond and Natalya in custody, Ourumov arrives and storms into the cell where Mishkin is interrogating the pair. Ourumov argues with Mishkin, trying to convince him that Bond is the traitor. Believing Natalya's story concerning Ourumov's treachery, Mishkin yells for a guard to arrest him, but the general quickly shoots Mishkin's bodyguard and then Mishkin himself with Bond's gun. After improvising a cover story, Ourumov then calls for the guards to kill Bond and Natalya. However, Bond hurls a chair into Ourumov and beats him, then throws him headlong into a wall. While he's dazed, Bond takes on two soldiers who enter the cell, then arms himself before escaping with Natalya. Ourumov leads his soldiers throughout the archives, searching for the pair. Ourumov's men manage to capture Natalya, leaving Bond to escape on his own. Ourumov takes Natalya and one of his men and they escape out onto the streets of St. Petersburg by car, but Bond hijacks a tank and suddenly bursts through a wall in pursuit. He leaves a path of destruction behind him as he chases Ourumov through the busy roads, but the general soon arrives at Trevelyan's converted missile train. Ourumov boards the train with Natalya, and explains to Trevelyan that Bond has escaped. Later, their journey is halted by Bond, who uses the hijacked tank to stop the train. He then boards the damaged train and holds Trevelyan and Xenia Onatopp at gunpoint. Ourumov is called into the room, holding a gun to Natalya's head. Bond reveals to Ourumov that Trevelyan is a Lienz Cossack, leaving Ourumov shocked - however, Trevelyan smooths things over by telling him how rich and powerful he will soon be. He then nods for Ourumov to shoot Natalya, but his real intention is for Ourumov to distract Bond while he and Xenia escape, turning the general into a sacrificial lamb. At this point, Ourumov is too slow and ends up being shot by Bond's AKS-74U, thereby putting an end to the "Iron Man Of Russia"'s life.

Single Player

Ourumov plays a big role in single player, despite only appearing in three levels: Facility, Silo, and Train. First encountered in Facility, Ourumov apparently shoots 006, as he and James Bond were going to sabotage the chemical weapons facility. In Surface I, M informs Bond that General Ourumov is now in charge of the Soviet Space Weapons Division.

Later, Ourumov is commiting unscheduled test firings in a Missile Silo in Kirghizstan, that may be used to cover the launch of GoldenEye weapons satellites despite it being unknown to the former Soviet powers in the region. It is found out that Ourumov will be firing satellites, and he appears near the end of the level where he orders Bond to be killed after discovering he has infiltrated the silo.

In Bunker II, Natalya tells Bond that Ourumov stole the GoldenEye satellite and that she has been branded a traitor. At the end of the level, Ourumov fires on the bunker in order to erase all evidence of the theft.

If the player decides to sit through the interrogation at the Military Intelligence Archives, Bond tries to convince his interrogators that Ourumov is a traitor but they do not believe him. A Russian soldier then enters the room and informs his interrogators that Ourumov's new orders are to kill Bond. Bond kills them all and rescues Natalya, then they go and see Dimitri Mishkin. Mishkin admits that Bond was correct and that General Ourumov is the traitor, and he claims that he will inform the Politburo of the general's deceit.

When Bond and Natalya escape to the Streets, Ourumov kidnaps her. Bond finds out from Valentin Zukovsky that Ourumov is taking her to a Disused Military Depot, where Trevelyan's train is located. Ourumov is stalled in his getaway by Valentin's "associates."

Ourumov is last seen in Train, where he is seen holding Natalya hostage. Bond has to choose whether to kill him and save Natalya, or finish the mission and apprehend Trevelyan. In order to complete the mission though, Bond must kill Ourumov and save Natalya. However, whereas Ourumov had taken extreme amounts of damage in Facility and Silo, he is now as weak as a regular guard and one shot will instantly kill him. This is simply because Ourumov wasn't meant to be killed in the earlier missions - the Train is where Bond finally eliminates him and continues his pursuit of Trevelyan.

Levels
  • Facility
  • Silo
  • Train
Weapons Used

The only weapon Ourumov carries is a DD44 Dostovei. He only uses it briefly by firing at Bond in Facility and Silo before running away. In Train, he only uses it if Bond shoots Trevelyan, waits too long or tries to exit the room once he has entered. Ourumov will kill Natalya and then start firing at Bond while Trevelyan escapes. Once he is killed, his weapon can be taken from him. In Facility and Silo, if the player has a Golden Gun or a Gold PP7, Ourumov can be killed and his weapon can be retrieved.

Multiplayer
  • They are the 5th character on the roster.
  • He presents a disadvantage to the player as his hat increases the chance of a headshot.
  • He has the second tallest line of sight.
Alec Trevelyan

GoldenEye 007 Alec Trevelyan 1.Alec Trevelyan is the main antagonist and a villain in both the Goldeneye movie and N64 video game. Trevelyan is known as a 00 agent - 006, previously. However, later on, he betrays MI6 and becomes the leader of the Janus Crime Syndicate, secretly and under a belief that he was shot and killed by Ourumov in Chemical Warfare Facility #2.

Levels
  • Facility
  • Statue
  • Train
  • Control
  • Caverns
  • Cradle
Weapons Used

Trevelyan uses many weapons. In Facility, he uses a D5K Deutsche. The mission can be beaten without seeing his supposed demise and thus does not use it. He only uses it if Bond shoots at him and he fires back, and, if he was not shot at, he will fire on oncoming Russian Soldiers. This weapon can be taken from him by killing him whereby the mission is failed even if the rendezvous objective was completed. Another way is to let the story play out and have Ourumov shoot him. He will drop his gun and it can be picked up.

When he appears again in Statue, he is unarmed. In Train, he uses a ZMG (9mm) which he will fire once if Bond either gets too close or kills Ourumov and saves Natalya.

He escapes to Cuba and is found at the end of Control where he is carrying a D5K Deutsche. In Caverns, he has an Automatic Shotgun. On the Antenna Cradle, he uses a US AR33 Assault Rifle which he will use to shoot at Bond periodically and frequently drops Hand Grenades as Bond is chasing him. The Assault Rifle and potentially a Hand Grenade can be picked up upon killing him.

Multiplayer
  • They are the 5th character on the roster.
  • He is Player 3's default character in 3-4 player matches.
  • He is wearing his Janus outfit.
Background

Goldeneye (Film)

In the film, he first appears as an ally (as 006) when Bond meets with him in the Chemical Warfare Facility; their mission is to destroy the base, specifically the production equipment and stockpiled nerve gas. Trevelyan is promptly "killed" by the commander of the facility, Colonel Arkady Ourumov (who reappears later in the film, being promoted to the General in charge of the Russian Space Forces). Bond escapes by detonating the bombs he and Trevelyan had set, albeit by deceiving Ourumov and the Soviet soldiers that the timer was set for six minutes when in fact he had halved the time.

Bond meets Trevelyan again in the Statue Park in St. Petersburg, Russia, much to his astonishment. He discovers that Trevelyan's "death" had been faked and that General Ourumov is in fact working for Trevelyan. He had taken the name Janus (after the two-faced Roman God) because his face was scarred when Bond destroyed the barrels back in the facility. Although the plan was to destroy the barrels, Trevelyan's anger is that Bond lied about setting the timer for six minutes instead of three, and the early detonation afforded him less time to flee to safety.

Bond then finds out that Trevelyan is planning to bankrupt England by electronically transferring millions of pounds sterling (£) from the British government to the Janus Crime Syndicate (his criminal organization), and then destroy London with an EMP blast from his stolen GoldenEye satellite to erase all evidence of the transaction. This in turn would destroy the city, kill millions of citizens, and result in the greatest financial meltdown in world history, enough it is believed to make the financial problems of the Great Depression or the dissolution of the Soviet Union pale in comparison.

Trevelyan had chosen to betray MI6 not so much to get rich, but more for a personal reason: To take revenge on the British government for betraying his parents during World War II. His parents were Lienz Cossack Russians who sold out Russia to the Nazis during WWII. Russia, having taken the brunt of the Nazi attacks on the Allied Powers, were angry at the Lienz Cossacks. They fled to England for asylum hoping to avoid Stalin's wrath, but the British government eventually returned them to Russia and they were slaughtered. Trevelyan states that he would have originally let Bond join him in his scheme, but he instinctively knew that "007's loyalty was always to the mission... never to his friends". He then attempts to kill Bond and Natalya (who his henchmen Xenia Onatopp and Boris Grishenko had captured earlier) inside the EMP-hardened Tiger helicopter (that Xenia and an unknown accomplice had previously stolen from the French) by firing its own missiles back on itself, but Bond manages to escape in time by headbutting the eject button.

Later on, Bond confronts his former ally aboard his converted armored train, where Trevelyan betrays General Ourumov (using him as a "sacrificial lamb") and lets Bond shoot him so that he and Xenia can escape, allowing Bond to rescue Natalya. Trevelyan attempts, once again, to kill them both, this time by rigging explosives inside the train and setting them for "the same time you gave me". However, Natalya uses the computer to send a "spike" to Boris's terminal (he was online in Cuba, backing up his files), and as a result, finds that he is now located in Cuba, and that Trevelyan and Xenia are most likely headed there to continue their operations. Bond uses his watch laser to cut a hole in the floor as she does this, and escapes with her.

When Bond reaches the Janus control centre hidden in the Cuban jungle, he and Trevelyan face each other once again. Bond manages to stop the GoldenEye from firing on London with the help of Natalya Simonova, but Trevelyan chases him to the top of the satellite cradle in an attempt to finally kill him and stop him from ruining his plans. While Bond is on the ladder suspended below the cradle, Trevelyan tries to make Bond fall off and they both end up fighting on a very small platform suspended high above the dish. They both struggle to throw each other off of the fixture, but Trevelyan is distracted when Natalya hijacks one of his helicopters. This gives Bond the opportunity to strike him and knock him off the platform, but before he falls, Bond grabs his leg and dangles him below the platform. Trevelyan's last words are "For England James?", to which Bond replies "No. For me." He then lets go and Trevelyan falls screaming from the fixture, then crashes onto the satellite dish far below. Had Trevelyan not died by defenestration, the collapse of the satellite dish would guarantee his doom.

Goldeneye 007 (N64)

GoldenEye 007 Alec Trevelyan 2.In the GoldenEye 007 Nintendo 64 game, Trevelyan plays very similar to that of the film. He once again meets with Bond in the Chemical Warfare Facility and is 'killed' by Ourumov. In the Statue Park, ex-KGB agent Valentin Zukovsky arranges Bond's meeting with Janus at the Statue of Lenin. Bond stands by the statue and is soon confronted by Trevelyan and his bodyguards, where the traitorous spy informs Bond of the British government's betrayal towards his parents and how he plans to take revenge. Bond then finds out that Trevelyan had kidnapped Natalya Simonova and has left her by the stolen Pirate helicopter, which is primed to explode in three minutes time. Before Bond can kill Trevelyan, he runs away and his bodyguards attempt to stop Bond from pursuing him. Trevelyan reappears aboard his Converted Missile Train along with Xenia Onatopp and General Ourumov (who is holding Natalya at gunpoint). Bond kills Ourumov and saves Natalya, but Trevelyan and Xenia take this opportunity to escape. Trevelyan then travels to Cuba and attacks Bond in both the Janus Control Centre and the Subterranean Caverns, but Natalya manages to redirect the GoldenEye's path of alignment away from London while Bond destroys the master control console. Trevelyan then climbs to the Antenna Cradle suspended high above the control centre, where a back-up control console is situated. The villain uses this to realign the GoldenEye in a final attempt to destroy London, but Bond reaches the cradle himself and destroys the console. He then engages in a fierce gunfight with Trevelyan and chases him throughout the cradle, finally confronting his former ally on a small round platform and killing him.

Notes
  • In certain missions, though most noticeable in the Antenna Cradle level, Trevelyan runs faster than Bond can. This is due to the movement and speed assigned to him in an Action Block. However, by utilizing the strafe-run technique, you may catch up to him.
  • In Facility, Trevelyan has a different outfit. He is wearing gear similar to Bond's covert utilities, but has no open neck as Bond's does. This outfit can be used in Multiplayer via cheat device code. This alternate outfit has the same height as the default Multiplayer Trevelyan. As it is character specific, it will merely make a clone of Trevelyan with his stealth suit as replacing his head is impossible.
  • In Cradle, there is a trick where if Bond stands in a certain spot, Trevelyan will throw a Hand Grenade toward Bond but will actually be throwing it at a wall, causing it to come straight back at him. The explosion will harm him or may even kill him.
  • An extra cutscene can be seen in Cradle if Bond manages to knock Trevelyan off the Antenna Cradle. It will show Trevelyan falling to his death, and this can also be seen in reverse roles if Bond falls instead.
  • If Bond hurts Trevelyan in Facility but does not kill him, Trevelyan will attack Bond in a similar manner to Mishkin in Archives.
  • If Bond gets Trevelyan to attack him in Facility, then stands in front of a soldier or a scientist, Trevelyan will shoot them instead and may even kill them. This ironically means you can get Trevelyan to kill Dr. Doak too.
  • It is possible to save Trevelyan in Facility and still win the mission. Take either the Golden Gun or Gold PP7 with you to the mission. As soon as the alarm goes off, wait at the door for Ourumov to open it. Shoot him and the showdown will never take place. You are now free to gun down endless guards with Trevelyan or shoot him for some fun. Try it with Enemy Rockets too - sometimes Trevelyan will kill himself with his own rocket.
  • It is possible to kill Trevelyan in the Statue Mission, but it will result in a mission failure as no information will be received from the Janus (Trevelyan). Use the Gold PP7 or Golden Gun, and once he appears, immediately shoot him to kill him. His super armor is also still applied when he is in the middle of his death animation.
  • It is also possible to kill Trevelyan in Control. Though, the chances are slim due to Trevelyan immediately closing his elevator door the moment he is being shot at or when Bond is within a certain range from his elevator. If Bond kills him by chance, he will gain access to his elevator, which holds no significance as he must enter his elevator to complete the mission, as well as his D5K Deutsche he carries. When he is killed, his body must disappear first before being able to gain access to his elevator. Otherwise, he will immediately close his door as done in the game's script. His elevator door opens and closes faster than any other elevator and will remain accessible until the mission is completed. It also does not have the chime being heard when it opens/closes.
  • In Cradle, if you follow Trevelyan down onto the small platform and then climb back up the ladder, Trevelyan will also climb back up and pursue you throughout the level like a regular guard (although his speed is increased). However, it's hard to reach the top again because Trevelyan will shoot at you and is likely to cause you to fall back down.
  • In Cradle, if the Fast Animation cheat code is turned on (easier to perform with Invisibility as well), Trevelyan can accidentally fall into his own death when reaching the final showdown on the platform. Sometimes he will accidentally run off without Bond having to gun him down. His model will fade away running as if he escaped if the player catches a quick glimpse before the cut-scene of him falling he shown.
  • Alec Trevelyan is an "anti-Bond" villain, as he shares similar skills to James Bond because he was a former 00 Agent (006) and is actually capable of defeating 007. He shares that distinction with Francisco Scaramanga.

Missions

Rare's Goldeneye 007 is a fantastic single and multiplayer game. Even people who were bored of first-person games will love this crafty spy take on the first-person shooter genre. Our strategy guide will help you through each of the 18 mission, on all three difficulty levels, and will ensure you know what to do and when to do it.

Review - Jeff Gerstmann

August 19, 1997

Upon first seeing GoldenEye 007 at the E3 convention, I was underwhelmed. I mean, here was yet another first-person shooter, with the only features setting it apart being the neat-looking sniper rifle and the fact that it was based on a movie that just about everyone had forgotten about. I couldn't have been more wrong. GoldenEye not only lives up to the "quality, not quantity" mantra that Nintendo continues to tout, it surpasses it. The sheer joy experienced by putting a bullet in some Russian's head with the sniper rifle, from 200 yards, never gets old, and the countless mission objectives spread across 12 different environments and three difficulty levels ensure that the game has the staying power of - dare I say it - Mario 64.

GoldenEye closely mirrors the plot of the 17th James Bond movie, starting with the daring bungee jump sequence and ending with a showdown between 007 and Alec Trevelyan atop a huge antenna. In between, you will shoot scads of soldiers, plant explosives, escape from a train seconds before it explodes, and execute other decidedly Bond-like maneuvers. The entire game takes place from a Doom-like perspective, except that holding down the R button allows you to aim anywhere on the screen, and with the sniper rifle, zoom in for a nice, clean head shot.

The graphics in GoldenEye are incredible. From installations deep under the snow to lush Cuban jungles, each environment looks really good, with a decent amount of detail. There is a slight bit of fogging at the edge of your view, but hey, St. Petersburg is a foggy place. The sniper rifle alleviates some of the fog, enabling you to zoom up and peep the action long before the guards are alerted to your presence. Also, the characters in the game look really good. When you run into Boris, he actually looks like Alan Cumming. The only character who doesn't transfer favorably into the 3-D world is Natalya, who looks a little too square.

The music in GoldenEye is absolutely perfect, and adds a lot of ambience to the game. For instance, one of the later levels starts in an elevator, complete with laid-back elevator music. When you exit the elevator, the level's real soundtrack kicks in. A minor point, sure, but it demonstrates the detail of the game. The only thing that could make GoldenEye's sound better is the inclusion of speech.

GoldenEye is the type of game N64 owners have been waiting for since they finished Mario 64. It has outstanding graphics and sound, and contains a certain depth in its gameplay that really entices you to finish it on all three difficulty levels. If more N64 games use this as a model, as opposed to Cruis'n USA or KI Gold, then perhaps the system really does have a shot at toppling the PlayStation's reign as the dominant game platform.
