Introduction
This is the second installment in the NBA Street series. It was released on the Xbox, Gamecube, and PlayStation 2. It was developed by EA Sports Big and published by EA. Like the other games in this series, it is a cartoonish take on street basketball.
NBA Live 2004™ delivers the definitive basketball experience. Whether spinning free in the lane for a vicious dunk or locking down on defense, NBA Live puts you in total control. With an enhanced EA Sports™ Dynasty mode, the ability to take the court at all 29 NBA arenas, and all-new commentary from Marv Albert and Mike Fratello, NBA Live 2004™ is all about authenticity. Blow past your defenders with all-new moves, an even better passing game, and silky smooth control in the fine-tuned EA Sports Freestyle Control. Step up your game with NBA Live 2004™.
you are not Vince Carter, Tim Duncan, or Jason Kidd. You have not been blessed with a three foot vertical jump or the genetic matter to make flushing a leather ball through a metal hoop seem effortless. You do not have a shoe sponsor or a personal entourage. You do not have girls knocking at your hotel room door every night. You are not an NBA superstar. Or are you?
Gripping the controller in your sweaty hands, do you feel the rush of the last second shot, the thrill of an overtime win, the satisfaction of total domination? Do you feel like a complete player? Do you feel like a basketball dynamo?
Or is it the grip of anguish when a three clatters out of the cylinder, the excruciating embarrassment of getting faced on a dunk attempt? Is it always a struggle, even when you are the Lakers and your buddy is the Clippers? Are you a perennial doormat?
No matter who you are this guide you learn how to avoid getting blocked, or make the perfect pass, or drive the lane like a pro. Perhaps you need cheats. Maybe you are looking to see who the stars on your team are, and where you should go with your franchise. You find knowledge on all of these subjects inside the digital pages of this guide. All you need to do is turn the page, and training camp begins.

Game Modes
Play Now
This allows you to play an exhibition game between another player or the computer. Make sure you scout the teams on the team select screen before you move on to get a sense of exactly what you are getting yourself into. you will also want to set up a user profile (or select it from here, if you already have one), in order to earn points that will go toward the NBA Store. After team select, you will be able to hook up both teams with any throwbacks you may have unlocked at the Store. Then it is time to ball.
Season
If you do not want the commitment of Dynasty in your life, opt for Season Mode. It allows you to take your NBA squad through an entire NBA campaign, from the opening tip to the finality of the Finals. Of course, you will be able to completely tweak your experience before it even begins. Run a Fantasy Draft to mix up the team composition, make a Custom league and seed the divisions yourself, and even set the length of the season: either 28, 56 or 82 games. You can even set whether or not sim play yields injuries, the length of time sim games are (in order to make stats comparable), and how the playoff format shakes down.
Once a Season begins, you have full reign over the GM's duties. Simply go to the GM's desk to check stats, see upcoming matchups, read NBA news and keep up on NBA Honors like MVP Candidates and Players of the Month. Use Roster Management to set your lineup, trade and sign players, check on injuries, and create custom players for your squad.
Dynasty Mode
Dynasty Mode is for the diehards out there — the guys and gals who like to play at being a GM over the course of several seasons and try to build an NBA powerhouse a la the Bulls or Lakers. For tips on whipping your team into shape for the long haul, take a peep at the Franchise section of this guide.
Playoffs
If you want all the thrill of an NBA Championship run, but do not want to work that hard, this is the mode for you. It allows you to customize and play your very own NBA postseason. This Mode allows you to determine what branch of the Playoffs you will start in, or you can choose to customize the kind of playoffs you are running. You can also choose a Fantasy Draft for Playoffs, so turn that option to Yes if you want to draft before playing. That way, even the Bulls have a shot.
1 On 1
As in last year's game, you are able to select All-Stars from years past to compete against one another in this mode. How does Cousy stack up against Le Bron? Find out here. The games can be played oulioors in the Urban setting, or inside the Gym. Every one-on-one rule you can think of is selectable here, and you can also choose to play in any of the jerseys you have unlocked.
Individual Practice
Heading to Practice is a good idea if you are having a hard time getting used to the controls. It allows you to practice with one player in an empty gym. Use this mode to familiarize yourself with the Freestyle system and for shot touch. This is especially useful when trying to find range and touch for threes. Select whatever player you need to work out with (including free agents), then head to the gym.
My NBA Live
This year's game brings My NBA Live to the table, where a veritable smorgasbord of NBA goodies await. This is where you will wanna go to view your EA Bio, enter Codes and check out the EA Sports Hall of Fame, which logs several all-time user records. Keep reading for a breakdown of each section.
NBA Store
The NBA Store allows you to purchase items in four categories using Points you have earned by completing tasks during gameplay.
- Hardwood Classics: The Hardwood Classics selection will allow you to purchase several jerseys for each NBA team. The categories are split up along division lines, and each squad's jerseys can be viewed by navigating to the right, then scrolling through each style with the D-Pad. Some Classics are only available for use in Practice and One-on-One, and cost less. Others are available for all modes, and are a tad pricier.
- Shoes: From old school Jordans to new school Shox, this is where you get your kicks. All of them are Nikes, but there are tons of styles to go around, and you can also navigate to the right and change the color of each pair. Once you purchase shoes, you have to go to the Edit Player screen in Roster Management, and select Gear to change Home and Away shoes. Team Gear: Team Gear can be purchased and used in Play Now mode. There are two practice jerseys per squad on sale here — Home and Away. Grab them, then outfit your team on the Play Now team select screen.
- NBA Gear: All kinds of goodies await you here — from headbands to long socks. Again, once you have purchased this stuff, you will have to go to the Edit Player screen to update your look.
NBA Codes
Here is where you will enter codes you discover. Keep checking back to the Secrets and Cheats section of this guide for Code info.
EA Sports Hall of Fame
Much like EA's NCAA game, NBA Live 2004™ allows you to take a look inside the trophy case. From this screen, you can view Team Awards, including Conference and NBA Championships, individual Player Awards, Team and NBA all-time records, and even check out the Retired Jerseys that have accrued during your Dynasty's tenure.
My Favorite Team
Want to change the skin that appears on all of the menu screens? Change it to reflect your current fave team, or make the selection "NBA" to see 'em all.
EA Sports Bio
If this is your first EA game of the year, you may not know what Bio is. Basically, it tracks all of your EA saves and combines them into one file. By playing multiple titles, and spending a lot of time playing EA products, you can unlock goodies for all of the games. The Bio for NBA Live 2004™ mostly unlocks shoes and other gear.
Offense
Do not Force the Pass
The CPU defense does an excellent job of clogging the lane. Therefore, passing across the court is often in exercise in excitement. Take your time to make sure your guy is open before you force the pass in a crowd. Never, ever, make a pass to a player that you cannot see. If you cannot see him, assume he is not open. Instead, use short passes that do not go over any defenders. Use the dribble to create space and draw defenders to you, then pass to the players that get open as a result. do not be afraid to run scripted plays (like the Pick and Roll or Post-Up) in order to spring someone for the pass.
When in Doubt, Use Icon Passing
Sometimes it can be difficult to aim passes right where you want them to go, and this can lead to lots of unwanted turnovers. If you keep getting your passes picked off, or the ball does not seem to be getting to the player you want it to, switch to icon passing. it is an extra button press, but it could save you a lot of hassle in the long run. it is also a good idea to get in the habit of using icon passing on inbounds plays, as it eliminates the possibility of the pass going to an unintended or opposing player.
Know Your Player's Strengths
EA makes it pretty easy on you in this regard by labelling players' best attributes with little icons. Good outside shooters are represented by a little 3 icon, good shot blockers have a hand icon, etc. To take the clutch three at the buzzer, you always want to get the ball in the hands of a dude with a 3 icon. it is that simple.
But it goes beyond icons, too, into the realm of common sense. Big guys are better at dunking than little guys. Point guards are better at pulling off finesse moves than lumbering oafs. do not try to shake and bake using your center, or you are liable to give up the rock. At the same time, do not expect to drive the lane with a point guard versus a center and lay it up over him, because he blocks you. Put a little thought into your players' abilities before the game, and note tendencies and successes as you get more comfortable with your squad.
Know Your Players Range
Before the game, take a look at a player's range. Believe it or not, this is an important thing to check out, as it gives you an idea of what percentage you can expect from different parts of the court from your various players. The most important thing to note is who can shoot from long range, and who cannot. do not assume that your point guard always is able to pop from the perimeter. For instance, T.J. Ford in Milwaukee is a terrible three shooter. Careful analysis of range before a game can give you an edge. it is homework, but at least it is fun. To view player ratings in this regard, go to the Reorder Rosters segment of Team Management. Scroll to the right using the D-Pad until you reach the Range rating.
Choose the Right Shoot Button
Remember, there are two shoot buttons in NBA Live 2004™ for the first time. One is a regular shot, a jumper. The other serves up either a finger-roll, layup or dunk, depending who is shooting and where he is on the court. Make sure you are not using the layup button from long range, or your player lobs up a sickly-looking finger-roll from beyond the arch, and no one wants that. The same is true of play near the basket. You do not want to pull up for a J when you are a half-foot away from the rim. If you are going in for a dunk, make sure you are at least inside the foul line to give yourself a chance. Or, if you want to be even craftier, use the Pro-Hop, then use the dunk button.
Do Not Shoot Midrange Jumpers
NBA Live 2004™ does not reward you with a lot of midrange stuff. Instead, this is a three-or-dunk kind of game. Therefore, it does not pay much to look for the short to medium jump shots, no matter how good you think your guy is at shooting them. Try to tailor your game to NBA Live 2004™ strength, which is hard, inside play. Penetration is the key to this game, and is the source of most (if not all of your points). Either you score on a dunk, layup or a kick-out three. Most of your points do not come from jumpers, so try to get used to that.
Use the Pro-Hop
The Pro-Hop is a new addition to NBA Live 2004™, and it is one of the most powerful maneuevers in the game. In fact, mastery of the Pro-Hop is most likely going to be the key to any success you have with this game. it is best used when approaching the basket, as it is a set-up move for a strong dunk or finesse lay-up. you want to either zoom past the player guarding you, or get him off-balance with a Freestyle side-step, then use the Pro-Hop.
Using the Pro-Hop requires a certain rhythm, as well as the right body positioning. It is best to be facing at an angle to the hoop, where the defender is on the inside or outside. This way, you can make the Hop past him, and be in perfect position for an easy hoop. Do not attempt the Hop if a guy is straight-up in your face. That results in you pulling up and having to pass the ball.
That said, do not always use the Pro-Hop to score. Sometimes, it is just as effective to make players commit to your Hop, then pass the ball to let another hombre take the shot. Be creative, and try to use it in combination with Freestyle controls to make the sickest plays look easy.
Do Not Get Blocked
Getting served is definitely not why you play the game. Therefore, make sure you give yourself the best opporunity to make a bucket on each and every shot. there is a very simple rule in this regard. Make sure there is no one between you and the basket when you move in for a layup or dunk. If you attempt to dunk over someone, it is pretty likely you will get blocked (unless you are Shaq on Mugsy). If they are playing off of you even a little, it is also likely that you will be called for a charge if you try to go over the top.
If you do not have a clear path to the basket, make sure you are at least even with the defender before attempting a shot or dunk, especially at close range. Making a defender play you from behind ensures that you have the advantage. If there is going to be a foul called on a play, and you are likely going to get the benefit of the doubt if you are past a man and contact occurs.
As we stated above, the other thing that will help a pristine run to the basket is the Pro-Hop. A sidestep using the Freestyle control is also a good tool in getting past a defender. Just make sure you are not attempting too much Freestyle action with big players, or you will commit turnovers, guaranteed.
Kick it Out For Three
As it has already been stated, the CPU plays some pretty stingy D, especially in the key. However, this can work to your advantage. If you are able to bring a big guy in the paint, the defense will frequently pull other players in to cover, leaving the perimeter ripe for exploitation. Penetrate, use the Pro-Hop, then take a glance at the outer rim. Often, you will have a guard on the outskirts who's unguarded or guarded loosely in this situation. Kick him out the ball and let him drain.
Freestyle Controls Work
One of the most consistently effective maneuvers in the Freestyle realm is the spin move. In the hands of an agile baller, it helps you cut a quick path to the hoop. Of course, in order to pull it off, you have to shake the defender. Use this combo. Give the ball to your point guard in a halfcourt set. Turbo toward one side of the lane, then pull the stick to the right or left (go right if heading to the right side of the lane) in order to sidestep the defender. Then use the spin move (press toward the basket — usually UP — to pull off the move) to get penetration. Finish up with a Pro-Hop, and then use the Dunk/Layup button for an easy basket. If nothing else, a defender commits to your razzle-dazzle, and there will be another open player somewhere.
Give Yourself Some Space
Another effective Freestyle control is the step back. This is useful if you are being hounded by aggessive defenders. it is also kind of sneaky to use when hovering right at the edge of the three point line. Pull back on the stick (while facing the defender) and you take a large step back, creating separation. As soon as you complete your step, pull up for a shot in rhythm. If you can get the timing of this maneuver down, you can milk it for a lot of points.
Back Down the Defender
The back down move is not quite as effective as it was in last year's NBA Live 2004™, where you could easily spin off of it and jam again and again. But it helps open things up. For one, if you use the back down near the outer edge of the lane, you usually draw another defender to you, leaving another player open somewhere. Then it is just a matter of tossing the ball over to him to drain.
The back down also allows you to open up some backdoor passes. If you start backing down near the foul line with a forward, you are able to hit a cutting center with a pass around your back for an easy bucket. Or, if you are close enough to the hoop, you can simply back your guy under the rim and use the dunk button to turn and slam it. Not only is this an effective scoring move, but it can also lead to defensive fouls a lot of the time.
Forget the Pump Fake. Unless.
Gone are the days when excessive pump faking would lead to open shots and fouls. In this Live, defenders are much more pump-savvy, so leave that mess at the hitching post. The only time you should use a fake is right when you receive a pass. Tap the shoot button to momentarily pause the defender, then use a Freestyle move to (hopefully) squirrel around him. If you do not use it in this way, it is not very effective.
Go to the Hot Shooter
Guys get hot and cold in Live, so stick with a player who is consistently hitting to cash in. Although this seems like common sense, some have to fight the urge to spread the touches around. Resist it, and milk hot players for all they are worth. Likewise, do not keep going to the same shot if you are consistently missing it. Trying eight threes from the same spot has nothing to do with the law of averages and everything to do with utter stupidity.
Defense
Move With the Ball
In some games, it is wise to play a more laid-back style of D. But in NBA Live 2004™. you are rewarded by following the action, and always matching up with the guy on the ball. By doing this, you should be able to stay in front of the offensive player and minimize his runs to the basket. Make sure you spread your stance, and make lateral movement impossible, and do not be afraid to get right up in someone's grill. Pressure defense, especially against a computer opponent, is the key to NBA Live 2004™ success.
Use a 2-3 Zone
There is no more effective defense than the 2-3 zone (it is one of the quick defensive plays that can be called using the D-Pad). It clogs the lane better than anything else, making for a tough trip to the basket. It puts defenders in perfect position for rebounds when the ball clatters off the rim after your opponent misses his outside shot (that is forced by packing the middle). The 2-3 Zone also makes passing across the lane nearly impossible. Call the play immediately after the other team takes possession so it has time to set up before.
Double Team Often
Hook up the double team manually by bringing an extra defender (usually the point guard) up to pressure the offensive player. Double teams in NBA Live 2004™ are uncommonly good at knocking the ball loose, leading to a higher turnover ratio. you know when you are doing it properly when both guarding players enter into a specific animation, and the player being guarded begins swinging the ball over his head in order to get it free. Double teaming is especially crucial when trailing down the stretch, but it should be used earlier than that simply to create opportunities.
Whale on the Steal Button
The virtual refs are not too charitable when handing out defensive fouls, but that works to your advantage while playing Defense. It means that you can absolutely mash the steal button and not get punished too much for it. Make sure you are also in a spread stance (use the right stick to press toward the player) so that the player cannot get by while you are trying to rob him.
Get Your Hands Up
Use the Freestyle control (UP on the stick) to get your hands up while guarding, especially when defending an in-bounds pass. Often, just having your meathooks in the air causes your opponent to make an errant pass. If you are ever playing a support role on defense (hanging back between a guarded player and the basket), it is a very, very good idea to have your hands up. This further cuts down the passing lane and increases the chance that you pick off an errant pass.
Block, Block, Block
A hug part of this year's game is blocking. Since it becomes pretty obvious when someone is making a move to the hoop, your goal on every shot is to cram it down the shooter's throat. The key to an effective block is being in front of the shooter. This sounds simple, but it is a key ingredient that is often hard to achieve. If for some reason a player gets past you and is striding to the rack, use the last player back button to switch to the nearest defender. You should try to block if a player gets past you, as you can sometimes swat it away from behind, but facing up is always preferable.
Stay as close to a shooter as you can. Separation means you are less likely to block. When a player goes up to shoot, pause a half-second from the beginning of the shoot animation, then make your jump. You do not want to be coming down on a block attempt because you jumped too early. Timing takes reps to perfect, but if you stagger your jump slightly, you are better off. do not lunge at a player when you attempt to block, as this only results in a defensive foul. Instead, jump straight up and down. If you are in the proper position, you execute perfectly without altering your direction while in the air.
Hit the Boards
Almost as important as blocking is rebounding. If you do a good job matching up on defense, you can be guaranteed a lot of errant shots. In order to cash in, you have to minimize the second chance points as well. To do this, you better be good at rebounding. Grabbing boards is mainly about the position your players are in on the court. Once a ball goes up, it is difficult to manuever someone into position at the last minute in order to get under the hoop and collect the rebound. Therefore, make sure you have the lane packed. As we mentioned earlier, using a 2-3 Zone is a good idea in order to always keep warm bodies in the paint. Use it.
Once a shot goes up, switch to the player nearest the hoop that is what the button is there for. As the ball bounces, jump to grab it at its highest point. The CPU often gives you the benefit of the doubt just by having a player close to the ball, so do not worry too much about grabbing stylish boards. Just make sure a guy is in place, and good things happen.
Watch the Freestyle Video
This one is extra-helpful in helping you learn some defensive techniques, especially as they relate to Freestyle control. Do yourself a favor and give it a look.
Franchise
Sign Any Free Agent For Minimum Salary
When going down the list of preseason activities, head into the free agent section and scroll through the list of available players. Whatever you do, do not sign anyone. Instead, back out of the free agent screen and head back to the list of preseason activities. Once you have completed everything on the list and move on to the season, click on the section that enables you to sign free agents again to find all of the free agents available and ready to sign for the minimum. It does not matter if it is Tim Duncan or Avery Johnson, everyone is wanting to sign for pennies. Fill your team with stars then head into the season with your new lineup to dominate the NBA.
Keep Your Eye on Upcoming Free Agents
You can find this selection in the GM's Desk section of the Dynasty Mode menu. It helps you keep an eye on guys who is coming up for free agency in the next season. Makes you an incomparable free agent-signing force. Just make sure you do not sign or draft a need that could obviously be filled by one of the marquee players about to be released to the market, and you are golden.
Improve in Training Camp
Training Camp, the first stop on the Dynasty Mode train, affords you the opportunity to improve your squad in four key areas:
Shooting
Training on shooting will affect a player's Field Goal, 3 Pointers, Free Throw and Inside Scoring ratings.
Defense
Training on defense will affect a player's Block, Steal, Defensive Rebound, and Defensive Awareness ratings.
Offense
Training on offense will affect a player's Pass, Dribble, Offensive Rebound and Offensive Awareness ratings.
Conditioning
Training on conditioning will affect a player's Strength, Speed, Quickness, Jumping and Stamina ratings.
There are a mere 100 points to spend on each of these categories, in increments of 5. While you might be tempted to put all of your beans into offensive categories, it is actually the opposite that works best. Sink 50 points into Defense and 50 points into Conditioning.
Here is why. The CPU-controlled players play the majority of your defense, as you are usually only controlling the guy on the ball. The other four guys are out of your control, but if you make them better at Defense, there is a better chance that they put themselves into good position to make a steal, snag a defensive rebound, etc.
As for conditioning, it allows your stars to spend more time on the court without their ratings taking a hit. Since your starters are always your best guys, the more minutes you can get them, the better. it is that simple. Conditioning also helps improve some fundamental ratings categories, which can give you that extra edge that you need.
Use Dynasty Development
One way to make your squad better during the season (short of being great at controlling the players) is by hiring coaches to help in various ratings categories. In order to hire them, however, you will have to earn Dynasty Points by completing objectives during gameplay. The more impressive you play, the more points you will accrue.
There are two ways you can go about this. You can hook up a Training Session, which can help an Individual or have a Team Session, which is preferable. But the best way to go is actually the Dynasty Extras selection. This allows very focused ratings-growing, and it has a much more diverse range of prices.
Hiring coaches and doctors in the Dynasty Extras menu allows you to improve the ratings of your entire team, and the length of time you want the ratings to last for. The Whole Season selection is always preferable, as it will give you the best shot to compete down the stretch. However, sometimes the 10 Games option is a little more manageable points-wise.Your increased ratings will likely help to generate even more Dynasty Points. And the circle of life is complete.
So what should you develop? Here's where you should focus on your team's deficiencies. While it always helps to increase your team's Stamina rating with Conditioning, it might be a better idea (especially if you already boosted Stamina in Training Camp) to bolster your Shooting or 3 Point Shooting across the board. Review your individual player stats to see what the whole team needs help with, then go after those categories aggressively.
Draft and Trade For Size
Since NBA Live 2004™ is focused on in-the-paint play, having as many big guys as possible is key. In fact, you will want to draft and trade for as much size as possible. Even guys who do not have stellar ratings... like Theo Ratliff... can be really good additions to your roster simply because they can bully players and get physical in the lane.
You may also consider going with some unconventional lineups to try to push the boundaries of the game. it is not unheard of to have three large, imposing guys on your starting roster, as long as one of them can move somewhat. This seals off the defensive end (especially in the 2-3 Zone) and make you almost impossible to guard on offense.
Ask Yourself: How Long Are You Going to Play For Really?
Be honest. If you are not the type of person who is going to play more than one season, you do not need to be too concerned with locking yourself to high-ticket players or long-term contracts. Knowing roughly the number of seasons you are going to play through can make your life a lot easier. If you are only going to play one or two, you might as well blow it all on a title run, and forget about the mess you are going to make at the end of the year. If you know you are in it for the long haul, you have to be a little more judicious about your decision-making.
Keep Injuries at Bay Cheater
One thing that can devastate a team more than any other is injuries to your starting lineup. One way to get around that is by cheating. Sure, part of the fun of being a GM is rolling with the proverbial punches, but if you do not find the challenge of scrambling to find replacements particularly appealing, go to the Gameplay Settings in the Settings menu and turn the Injury Frequency to 0. it is not necessarily sporting, but hey. it is your team. After all, it is better than paying a Team Doctor 10,000 Dynasty Points, when you could be boosting ratings instead.

NBA Live 2004™ Hint: Getting Great Players
While playing in dynasty mode, after the first off-season, pick up free agents that have an overall rating of 65 or over. Next, trade the players that you have just picked up for a great player and two horrible players (by horrible I mean having an overall rating of 30 to 40). They should accept your trade.
