The Operative No One Lives Forever

Unexpected Turbulence

Briefing

During the flight to London, attempt to learn as much as possible from Doctor Schenker about his research. Schenker is a notoriously cautious man, so direct questions are not advised. He is also reported to have little tolerance for skeptics. Try to keep an open mind.

Objectives

Learn what you can from Doctor Schenker.

Trivia
  • This is the first mission not to be preceded by a briefing or training level.
  • If you are polite to Dr. Schenker in your conversation at the plane, he will thank you for rescuing him later and apologizes for having initially doubted Cate's competence.
  • Magnus Armstrong becomes the second villain to be introduced in the game.
  • During the captain's speech, he mentions turning the No Smoking signs off. This re-visualizes the fact that smoking was allowed on planes until the late 1980's.
  • After knocking Archer out, the patriotic Armstrong says that he will not kill her because “she is a fellow countryman.” This is the first of three times that he spares her life in this way.
  • It is unknown whether the Head Paratrooper is the same man that always accompanies Armstrong on his missions. Similar characters make frequent appearances, (e.g. A Tenuous Lead and The Indomitable Cate Archer) but they all remain nameless.
  • Although Archer and Dr. Schenker are the only passengers that can be seen by the player during the hijack, it is implied that there were more civilians on board, as there are two toilet doors which cannot be opened (they are marked as OCCUPIED), one before the first Economy class cabin (near where you start), the other before the Executive level (below the cockpit at the bottom of the ladder). They do not open even when the plane is about to explode.
  • When escaping the plane, the only toilet you could enter during the hijack is now closed, marked OPEN. Despite what this may suggest, it cannot be opened.
  • This is the only mission in the game where a weapon is held sideways. Archer holds the Hampton MPL 9mm SMG sideways while in freefall at Scene 2. Hampton MPL becomes your standard weapon once you jump out of the plane.
  • Entire mission is a heavy test for player to seize environment around them to progress, timing their reload and a check their long range accuracy for depth perception.
  • Thanks to game engine not calculating the wind speed or bullet fall, trajectory of shots show very small amount of deviation.
  • Shooting your only objective at Scene 2; hurting the only paratrooper below you with an unopened parachute pack, will force him to open his parachute like other paratroopers while player fall to their death with no fall back options.
  • The parachute scene is a reference to the 1979 James Bond film: Moonraker, which also features a scene in which Bond steals a parachute from Jaws after he falls out of a plane.
  • When paratroopers at Scene 2 incur enough damage, they will not die instantly or fall to their demise but open their parachute to float instead of zipping around Archer and try to gun her down. This can be an indication of them being more durable than their previous fellows.
  • While you are in freefall, a man can be witnessed strapped to his chair screaming out of the plane, plummeting helplessly. If you focus on the chair for long enough, you can see that the man is clearly a civilian (your crosshair will turn red if it is turned on). Going by the look of the chair, it is likely he was hiding in the first OCCUPIED toilet as it is nearer the start of the Economy class seats.
  • The planes in this Mission could be British De Havilland DH-106 Comet 4s, due to both of them having engines built into the wings and slightly lengthened fuselage. If this were the case however, the interior wouldn't match up to the exterior due to the plane in the mission having a second floor (which the Comet does not.). Also, there are more windows inside the plane than there are outside. Not to mention, the Comet does not have cabin Rooms, which the NOLF plane has.(Note that the cabin in the beginning where Archer and Dr. Schenker are talking does not even have Beds!)

1. Scene 1, Unexpected Turbulence

Intelligence Items: 3
  1. The intelligence is gained by being polite to Dr. Schenker during the initial conversation
  2. Dossier in the room on the left behind where you start
  3. Envelope on the sink in the restroom

You begin the mission in conversation with Doctor Schenker. When prompted for a dialogue choice, select “What about your wife? Will she be joining you in England?” and Schenker will go on to describe his wife and his experiments. At the next choice, select “How is such a thing possible?” to receive more information and an intelligence item.

A cutscene interrupts the conversation showing the burly Scottish man in his own plane - docking with Cate's plane!

Objectives

Head to the cockpit and find out what is going on. Exit the room with Doctor Schenker and go left immediately and enter the baggage room. Locate the intelligence item inside here. Return and proceed left past Doctor Schenker's room toward the main section of the plane - which is filled with new enemy guards! Take out your submachine gun and eliminate the guards ahead. Additional guards take cover behind the airplane seats. Search the nearby bathroom for another intelligence item.

Continue pressing forward and taking out guards. You will reach an area of the plane cracked by an explosion. Thankfully, a conveniently sized seat covers the hole in the plane. Locate the hatch in the floor and open. Crawl down and move through the wheel section. Climb the ladder on the other side and open the hatch. Kill the guards ahead. Locate the stairs heading up and kill the guard protecting the top. Locate the cockpit to the right and approach the captain to complete the scene - Cate's knocked out by the burly Scottish guy.

Walkthrough

Once the cut-scenes are finished, equip the Hampton (or whatever heavy weapon you chose) and go out the door, left. Go into the first cabin on the left and get the DOSSIER there. Go back out and take a right from Schenker's cabin this time. Go through the next cabin and then into the bathroom in the next antechamber. Get the LETTER and body armor there.

In the next cabin the door will burst open. Open the hatch in the floor and continue forward. Open the next hatch and listen to a FUNNY CONVERSATION. Go around the bathroom here and up the stair on your right. Then go into the cockpit.

2. Scene 2, Unexpected Turbulence

Intelligence Items: 5
  1. Envelope in conference room behind the cockpit
  2. Briefcase on table in the room at the bottom of the ladder
  3. Dossier on seat blocking the open door
  4. Film canister on shelf by two guards talking about parachutes
  5. Envelope on table in last room before falling out of plane 1
Objectives

Find a parachute and get off the plane. Cate awakens inside the plane and has less than a minute to locate a parachute. She is also has no weapons! Exit the cockpit and go down the stairs to pick up a submachinegun and use it against the guards still on the plane (searching for their own parachute). It is tough to collect all the available intelligence items and still reach the end of the plane. You will find one inside the briefing room across from the cockpit, another near the hole in the plane, one near the stairs, one near the restroom, and a film canister on a counter behind a closed bathroom.

Run to the end of the plane (through the wheel area), and though you will not find a parachute, you will find a new route out of the plane - an explosion. Cate finds herself flying out of the plane without a parachute. The Scottish guy decides to seize the opportunity and keep the pressure on the plummeting Cate.

Objective

Catch up to the fellow below you and appropriate his parachute. You can control yourself during the decent. The directional keys will move Cate around, though expect the movement to be unpredictable. Your goal is to move Cate over the guard below her - that is the only way to grab him and steal his parachute. You can also use the jump key to get a moderate upwards boost.

Meanwhile, other guards are falling around you and taking shots. To survive, you must repel their fire with your submachinegun. Just hit the guards a few times to cause them to release their parachutes.

The scene ends once you reach the guy below you, and you land directly on top of him. Cate steals his parachute, and he goes plummeting into a barn.

Walkthrough

You are unarmed. Go into the conference room and get the FOLDER. Go down the ladder real fast and get the gun. Shoot the guy and grab the BRIEFCASE in the cabin to your right. Run back real fast and down the hatch. Go up and grab the DOSSIER by the ruined door. Run back the other way, shoot the two guys to get their ammo, and run into the next cabin. Grab the FOLDER on the table to the right and dash down the hall.

At this point, the plane breaks apart and you are free-falling. Look down to see a guy. Catch up to him WITHOUT SHOOTING HIM. Once you get close enough, Cate will say something like "mind if I borrow that?"

Get closer and you will grab it from him, ending the level. Think you got close enough, and the level did not end? You did not get close enough. Get closer. when you get close enough, the level will end.

There is a parachuters coming down after you. Shoot them if can; their accuracy is uncanny, considering the circumstances.
