Snowflake Mountain
Snowflake Mountain is the second world of Diddy Kong Racing and its remake, Diddy Kong Racing DS. The area is snow based with frozen ponds, giant snowballs, and a single village in one racetrack. To access it, the player must have collected 2 or more Golden Balloons and fly to the entrance on a cliff. Bluey the Walrus is the boss.
Description
The permanently frozen slopes of Snowflake Mountain are pretty inhospitable at most times, but when it comes to testing your racing prowess, they're the place to be. Frosty tunnels, towering ice slabs and vast snowfields all combine to form some grueling courses. Here you'll get the chance to hit top speed on the glacier at Everfrost Peak, loop the loop in the caves of Walrus Cove, skid between tumbling ice boulders in Snowball valley and cruise through the starlit mist at Frosty Village.

Everfrost Peak, Snowflake Mountain
Everfrost Peak is the fifth track in the game Diddy Kong Racing and its remake, Diddy Kong Racing DS. It is the first track of the second world, Snowflake Mountain. Two Golden Balloons are required to enter this course, and after the player defeats Bluey the Walrus the first time, the total balloons needed to reenter the course and compete in the second challenge increases to ten. The default vehicle for this track is the Plane.
- Requirement(s): 2 Golden Balloon (regular course)
10 Golden Balloons (Coin Challenge course) - Vehicle Type(s): Car, Hovercraft, and Plane
In the original N64 version of the track, all three vehicles are usable on this track upon completion of the course or during a Time Trial. In the Nintendo DS remake, Cars are not featured among the options because the water at the start of the level is no longer frozen. The standard vehicle for this track in both games is the plane. The official Diddy Kong Racing website suggested racing as Bumper on this track.
This track is the smallest and most simple snowy track out of the four within the game. Everfrost Peak is in the shape of a sloppy figure-8. The arches are more snowy in the Nintendo 64 version of the game, as in the Nintendo DS version, the arches are a dark black color, and appear to be more rocky than snowy/icy. The arches in the DS version are also slightly bigger, and seem to be thicker than the ones that are in the Nintendo 64 version of the game. The sky for this course in the Nintendo 64 version is dark blue with stars, while it is brighter with the blizzard effect in the DS version.
Course Layout
The track is fairly simple and involves navigating a snowy canyon over a frozen river. Part of the way through the course is a cave, at the end of the cave there is a fork in the road; the left leads to a red balloon and a zipper, while the right has two blue balloons.
At the start of the race, players start in a plane and the frigid road starts off by curving slightly to the right, then to the left with some boost pads on the ground as well as in the air. The sides of the road have big, cold snowy mountains with a bunch of snowy trees on the top.
Soon, the racers approach a long, freezing river with some edges sticking out with some collectibles on them. Also, some snowmen with scarfs start appearing along with the trees on the mountain tops. The freezing river also curves slowly to the left. When the curve is over, the river continues to go straight for a bit as the racers approach an arch hanging above the water from the frosty mountains on the sides of the river. It is nearly in the middle of the racer's flying route, so they have the option to yield over the arch, or cautiously dip underneath it. The river ends as the frosty road returns with some Item Balloons just after the current comes to a stop.
Next, the racers enter an ice cavern, curving to the left and then slightly to the right. The ceiling of the cavern seems to lower at the first curve. The ice is also a darker blue color and seems to be more thick. Once the racers exit the cave, there is a split path with a big, mountainous chunk of ice in the middle separating the two paths. Both paths are pretty much identical, as they are both very short and stay parallel to each other. While the racers are going on the split paths, they are also going on a big downhill. Once the downhill ends, the two paths rejoin back into one big, frigid road again.
Then, the road curves right as the racers go under or over another arch hanging from both of the snowy mountains on the sides. There is also a boost pad on the road if a racer chooses to go under the arch. Then the road curves slowly to the right, with some more boost pads on the ground as well as in the air.
Finally, the road makes some small zigzags as the racers approach the finish line for their next two runs.
Coin Challenge Locations
Like other levels, Everfrost Peak is filled with eight Silver Coins, scattered all around the area. The coins only appear after player has beaten Bluey the Walrus for the first time.
- In the middle of the air directly ahead of the starting line.
- To the far left of an airborne zipper, by some balloons.
- The first cliff to the left.
- Directly behind the balloon behind the first coin on the cliff.
- Above a rocky ridge just beyond the cliff.
- In the middle of the course at the cave exit.
- Above a snowy ridge after the fork in the course.
- Below the snowy ridge after the fork in the course.
Trivia
Compared to Walrus Cove and Snowball Valley, this is the only course where the ice does not bounce the player back on the track if using a Car.
Walrus Cove, Snowflake Mountain
Walrus Cove is the sixth track in the game Diddy Kong Racing and its remake, Diddy Kong Racing DS. It is the second track of the second world, Snowflake Mountain. The default vehicle for this track is the Car. Three Golden Balloons are needed to enter this course, and after Bluey the Walrus is defeated for the first time, the total Balloons needed to reenter and compete in the second challenge increases to eleven.
- Requirement(s): 3 Golden Balloons (regular course),
11 Golden Balloons (Coin Challenge course) - Vehicle Type(s): Car and Hovercraft
Course Layout
The cove begins with a cave which leads to a massive ice slide which bends upwards. Zippers at the foot of the slide allow the players to traverse it. The slide comes out into another cave which leads to a snowy bridge which goes through the loop of the ice slide. The bridge takes a sharp turn into another cave which leads to a snowy rock canyon, there is a cliff shortcut when coming out of the cave. At the end of the short canyon the track is broken up by water before coming to a fork. The right hand side is normal width, contains broken patch of water, and three balloons (two red with a green in the middle). The left hand path is significantly narrower and harder to stay on but reaches the start line quicker than the other path, it also contains a rainbow balloon and a zipper.
In the Nintendo DS game version, the water near the end of the track acts as normal water. In the original game version, it bounces the player's Car until they reach land; the water does not affect Hovercrafts.
Coin Challenge Locations
Walrus Cove is filled with eight Silver Coins, scattered all around the area. The coins only appear after player has beaten Bluey the Walrus for the first time.
- Just before the ice slide begins.
- In the cave immediately following the ice slide to the left.
- To the immediate left, by the railing, after taking the sharp turn on the bridge, before the next cave begins.
- Near the exit of the next cave to the very right, near the cliff shortcut.
- In the center of the road in the canyon area.
- To the very far right of the road by the water just before the first water break in the road.
- On the left path at the fork in the road, just after the zipper.
- To the very far right of the road by the water at the fork in the road.
Snowball Valley, Snowflake Mountain
Snowball Valley is the third track of Snowflake Mountain and is set in a valley full of snow. Snowballs often roll down the hill and increase in side. This track also has the key to this world's battle arena. 6 Golden Balloons are required to enter this course, and after the player defeats Bluey the first time, the required total to reenter jumps to 14 balloons.
- Requirement(s): 6 Golden Balloons (regular course),
14 Golden Balloons (Coin Challenge course) - Vehicle Type(s): Car and Hovercraft
Snowball Valley is the seventh track in the game Diddy Kong Racing and its remake, Diddy Kong Racing DS. It is the third track of the second world, Snowflake Mountain. The default vehicle for this track is the Car. The Nintendo DS game version is largely the same as the original, though like the track before it, the water in the remake acts like normal water rather than causing players to bounce. Additionally, the key looks slightly different. The total of Golden Balloons needed to enter this course is six, and after defeating Bluey the Walrus the first time, the total to reeneter and compete in the second challenge will increase to fourteen.
Course Layout
The starting line is located within a snowy canyon, the track almost immediately becomes forked leading down two very different paths. The right hand side continues on as a normal track and begins with a line of four balloons (two red and two green), the road is edged by water pools (the property of the water varies between the game versions). This path ends by launching the player over a cliff and into the titular valley of the track. The left path at the fork leads to an icy tunnel containing a blue balloon. The tunnel crosses the road the right path takes. Before coming out at the foot of the cliff the other path terminates at. Both paths end at the entrance to the valley; in the valley the players must evade gigantic snowballs that roll across the path. If a snowball makes contact with a player the character will be squished flat. The valley ends in a tunnel resembling an igloo which will bring the player back to the starting line.
Coin Challenge Locations
The coins only appear after player has beaten Bluey the Walrus for the first time.
- At the start of the track before the fork, in the center.
- At the end of the right fork in the track, just before the player goes off cliff to the left.
- To the sharp right, on the wall of the valley, after exiting the ice tunnel.
- In the center of the wooden arch before the snowball valley properly begins, in front of the balloons.
- To the left of the valley before the igloo tunnel.
- The left of the track before the starting line.
- To the left of the fork in the track, at the entrance to the ice tunnel.
- To the right of the valley just after the wooden arch.
Key Location
There are two ways the key can be reached in this level: either by going immediately left upon starting the race or by veering off to the left after exiting the igloo tunnel after nearly completing a full circuit of the track. There is a small path to the left of the main track which terminates in an alcove containing the key for Snowflake Mountain.
Frosty Village, Snowflake Mountain
Frosty Village is the fourth track of Snowflake Mountain and is set in a village. The player needs 9 Golden Balloons to gain access to this course, and after Bluey is defeated the first time, the total to reenter the course increases to 16 balloons.
- Requirement(s): 9 Golden Balloons (regular course),
16 Golden Balloons (Coin Challenge course) - Vehicle Type(s): Car, Hovercraft, and Plane
Frosty Village is the eighth track in the game Diddy Kong Racing and its remake, Diddy Kong Racing DS. It is the fourth track of the second world, Snowflake Mountain. The default vehicle for this track is the Car. In the remake version, several large rocks were removed from the middle of the track in order to make it easier for players to take a shortcut. Nine Golden Balloons are required to enter this course the first time and in order to reenter and compete in the second challenge after defeating Bluey the Walrus, the player needs a total of 16 Balloons.
Course Layout
The starting line begins on a snowy track surrounded by water (unlike most other courses in Snowflake Mountain this water is normal). The track leads to short cave with balloons and a zipper before coming out onto a snowy mountain with rocky arches overlooking the titular village. After navigating the curve through the village, the track comes to a long cave before coming out into a misty forested area. If the player turns right after exiting the cave, they can take a shortcut through the forest using zippers. At the end of forest there is another short cave, if the player is using a hovercraft they can go over the water to the right of the track after the cave, there is a shortcut back to the starting line behind the waterfall. If the player is in a car the track goes through another very short enclosed section before coming back out near the starting line.
Coin Challenge Locations
The coins only appear after player has beaten Bluey the Walrus for the first time.
- Through the leftmost arch on the hill before descending to the village.
- By the middle house in the village, on the left.
- On the wall of the cave immediately after the zipper, to the left.
- In the forest area just beyond the first zipper, on the left of the track near a tree.
- On the left wall of the track in the section with the waterfall shortcut.
- Just before the starting line. to the very left of the track by the water.
- Immediately after the starting line by the wall to the left.
- Through the rightmost arch on the hill before descending to the village.
Icicle Pyramid (T.T. Trial), Snowflake Mountain
Icicle Pyramid is the battle stage of Snowflake Mountain. Four players compete in an all-out battle to eliminate each other with power-ups and the last one standing wins.
Description
If it's a straightforward all-out battle you're looking for, this course might be more your style. Race around the frosty corridors of the pyramid, seeking out your three rivals and letting loose with any power-ups you can find! Everybody begins the game with eight bananas, losing two for each hit they take; your only aim is to be the last one standing...
–Description from the Diddy Kong Racing Instruction Booklet
Course Layout
As the name suggests, this battle stage takes place within a large pyramid of ice, comprised of three stories. The bottom floor is made up of narrow tunnels with occasional alcoves with balloons, the tunnels run along the square borders of the pyramid, but there are four connecting tunnels leading to a large open area in the center if the level. The large open area has icy ramps leading up to the next floor. The second floor is where the players begin the stage, and like the bottom floor has tunnels running the perimeter of the pyramid. Again, there each tunnel connects to the central area of the level which in this case is an ice platform containing balloons directly over the central area of the bottom floor. This platform contains no barriers so if a player runs over the edge of the platform they will be dropped down to the bottom floor. Two of the tunnels on the second floor lead to large, curved snow ramps that lead up to the third floor. The third floor is quite small and empty compared to the other two, having only a few balloons and a small road around the perimeter of the pyramid again. There is no central area on this level only a large hole which, should the player run off the road, will drop them down to either the second or first floor.
Objective
At the start of this stage all players begin with a counter of 8 bananas under their character icon, whoever can hold onto their own bananas while knocking other players out be removing their bananas wins. Each hit a player suffers will remove two of the bananas from their counter so the player can only take four hits before they are eliminated. Bananas can be removed by targeting other players using the power-ups granted by the various balloons around the level (i.e. the rockets from the red balloon or the spikes from the green balloons).
Bluey's Course, Snowflake Mountain
Bluey's Course is the second boss course of Diddy Kong Racing and its remake Diddy Kong Racing DS and is found in the Snowflake Mountain world. In this level the player must beat Bluey the Walrus to the end of a slippery and winding ice course. There are some minor changes to the track in the DS version of the game.
