Sherbet Island

Diddy Kong Racing - Sherbet Island map.

Sherbet Island is the third world of Timber's Island in Diddy Kong Racing and its remake, Diddy Kong Racing DS. The world is mostly water-themed with pirate ships mostly sunken, pirate caves, and whales and the entrance to the world is located on an island in the bay by the lighthouse. The player needs 10 Golden Balloons to enter this world. Bubbler the Octopus is the boss of this world.

Description

Diddy Kong Racing Sherbet Island. The idea of a tropical paradise is realized on Sherbet Island, where there's barely a soul to be seen and the sunny silence is totally relaxing. Once the home of smugglers and pirates, it's long since been abandoned to the parrots, palm trees and rolling blue waves. Some surprisingly varied racetracks have been created here, ranging from the thundering falls of Whale Bay and the sandbank-studded shallows of Pirate Lagoon, to the sandy coastal tunnels of Crescent Island and the deserted smugglers' lair now known as Treasure Caves.

Sherbet Island

Whale Bay, Sherbet Island

Whale Bay is the first track of Sherbet Island and can only be raced using a hovercraft. The track takes place in a simple bay featuring several whales, one of which forms a shortcut for racers. The player needs 10 Golden Balloons to enter this course, and after Bubbler is defeated the first time, the required re-entry total increases to 17 balloons.

  • Requirement(s): 10 Golden Balloon (regular course)
17 Golden Balloons (Coin Challenge course)
  • Vehicle Type(s): Hovercraft

Diddy Kong Racing Whale Bay. Whale Bay is the ninth track in the game Diddy Kong Racing and its remake, Diddy Kong Racing DS. It is the first track of the third world, Sherbet Island. The default, and only, vehicle for this track is the Hovercraft. As the name suggests, the track is inhabited by a few whales and one of them can become part of the track. A total of 10 Golden Balloons is needed for the player to enter this course.

Course Layout

The track is a very basic almost exclusively water-based course. There is a zipper immediately ahead of the starting line which boost the player towards a row of a variety of balloons. Just beyond the next zipper the player has the choice to either continue upon the water near the wall of the bay and go through another zipper, or they can jet over the sandbars and rocks. Alternatively, the player can drive up the back of one of the whales the bay was named after and come out on the deck of a pirate ship. This is a form of shortcut whereupon the player can drop off the pirate ship and out onto open water, bypassing the sandbars and turn. There is one other zipper just as the sandbars end and the track loops back to the starting line.

In the DS remake, the smaller loop in the course of the track changes from a sunny space into a cove and 3 waterfalls become 2.

Coin Challenge Locations

The coins only appear after player has beaten Bubbler the Octopus for the first time. To compete in the Coin Challenge, the player needs a total of 17 Golden Balloons.

  1. Just in front of the zipper just ahead of the starting line.
  2. Just in front of the line of balloons on the first turn.
  3. In open water just beyond the balloons.
  4. In front of the second zipper.
  5. In open water before the player must choose between the sandbars or the pirate ship.
  6. On a rock beyond the first sandbar.
  7. In the last zipper.
  8. In open water just ahead of the starting line.

Crescent Island, Sherbet Island

Crescent Island is the second track and is set among sandy tunnels and an abandoned pirate ship. This track also has the key to this world's battle arena. The player needs a total of 11 Golden Balloons to access this course, and after Bubbler is defeated the first time, the total to reenter increases to 18 balloons.

  • Requirement(s): 11 Golden Balloons (regular course),
18 Golden Balloons (Coin Challenge course)
  • Vehicle Type(s): Car, Hovercraft, and Plane

Diddy Kong Racing Crescent Island. Crescent Island is the tenth track in the game Diddy Kong Racing and its remake, Diddy Kong Racing DS. It is the second track of the third world, Sherbet Island. The default vehicle for this track is the Car. A total of 11 Golden Balloons is required for the player to enter this course.

Course Layout

The track takes place on sand, just beyond the starting line is a fork in the road. The left fork goes by the water, is much narrower, has a rainbow balloon, and contains a zipper, while the right fork is undercover, contains bumpy stretches and has a variety of balloons. The paths merge a little later before stretching to the right, near the wall there are more balloons and another zipper. After the turn, the players will encounter a pirate ship. There are two paths the player can take on the pirate ship; the first is the most straightforward, curving to the left after boarding the ship and continuing on the main track. Or, there is a shortcut by going up a ramp to the right of the main track which will take the player to an opening which will drop them back onto the track within the ship. Alternatively, if the player is using a Hovercraft they can bypass the ship entirely and cross the water instead. After the ship the track enters a small cave, at the end of this cave is another slightly difficult shortcut where the player can take an extremely sharp right turn to get to the starting line. However, if not executed properly the player will run into a sandy column. Otherwise, after coming out of the cave the track curves to the right to return to the starting line.

Coin Challenge Locations

The coins only appear after player has beaten Bubbler the Octopus for the first time, at which point he total needed to reenter the course increases to 18 Golden Balloons.

  1. At the end of right fork path on a sand bump, just before the path rejoins the left path.
  2. By the right wall just beyond where the path converges again, behind some palm trees.
  3. To the left of the ramp leading to the ship, by the water.
  4. Over the porthole shortcut on the pirate ship.
  5. To the left of the cave entrance after the ship, by the wall.
  6. In the shortcut by the sandy column just before the starting line.
  7. In front of the zipper on the left path of the fork.
  8. At the end of the left fork path before it rejoins the right path.

Key Location

It is advisable to use the Hovercraft rather than the Car when trying to reach the key as the key is in an alcove in the water. To get to the alcove, the player must go down the left path at the first fork in the road, however instead of staying on the road go out into the ocean. Where the road joins up with the right fork of the road there is a wall on the left, when coming up to this wall from the ocean there will be an X upon the wall. Under this X is the alcove containing the key to Darkwater Beach. In the DS remake however the key is in a slightly different location, just to the left after the left fork of the road, not requiring the player to go into the ocean.

Pirate Lagoon, Sherbet Island

Pirate Lagoon is a very twisty track featuring many sharp turns among sandbanks, coves and a castle. Like Whale Bay, this track can only be completed on a hovercraft. The player needs a total of 13 Golden Balloons to enter this course, and after Bubbler is defeated the first time, 20 balloons are needed to reenter.

  • Requirement(s): 13 Golden Balloons (regular course),
20 Golden Balloons (Coin Challenge course)
  • Vehicle Type(s): Hovercraft

Diddy Kong Racing Pirate Lagoon. Pirate Lagoon is the eleventh track in the game Diddy Kong Racing and its remake, Diddy Kong Racing DS. It is the third track of the third world, Sherbet Island. The default, and only, vehicle for this track is the Hovercraft. 13 Golden Balloons is the required total for the player to enter this course. Out of all the tracks in the game from N64 to DS, this one has a musical theme change.

Course Layout

The track begins on a stretch of water just ahead of a small rock tunnel, the tunnel leads to several land patches in the water, the first of which contains several balloons. To the right of the land patches is a zipper. The land patches end at an extremely sharp U-turn, this leads the racers to more balloons and another zipper before coming to a land ramp into the castle entrance. The castle entrance contains more balloons before sharply turning to the left down a corridor. The corridor ends in a right turn back out into a cove, with zipper directly outside of the exit. The cove veers to the right through to more balloons before taking another sharp U-turn to the left. After the U-turn, the player comes to a fork; the right path leads out into open water again before looping back to the starting line, while the left has a zipper ahead of a ramp which will launch the player over a shortcut, and collect a balloon along the way, taking the player almost directly back to the starting line.

Coin Challenge Locations

The coins only appear after player has beaten Bubbler the Octopus for the first time, at which point the total needed to reenter this course increases to 20 Golden Balloons.

  1. To the left of the first land ramp
  2. In the center of the U-turn
  3. To the far right on a strip of land before the castle entrance
  4. On the left in the cove outside of the castle, just before the U-turn

Treasure Caves, Sherbet Island

Treasure Caves is the last track of Sherbet Island and takes place in an abandoned smugglers lair featuring another abandoned shipwreck in a gloomy cavern. A total of 16 Golden Balloons is required to enter this course, and after Bubbler is defeated the first time, the total needed to reenter jumps to 22 balloons.

  • Requirement(s): 16 Golden Balloons (regular course),
22 Golden Balloons (Coin Challenge course)
  • Vehicle Type(s): car, Hovercraft, and Plane

Diddy Kong Racing Treasure Caves. Treasure Caves is the twelfth track in the game Diddy Kong Racing and its remake, Diddy Kong Racing DS. It is the fourth track of the third world, Sherbet Island. The default vehicle for this track is the Car. While the track is basically identical between the two versions of the game, the DS remake plays different music on the track in comparison to the original. The player needs a total of 16 Golden Balloons to compete in this course.

Course Layout

The beginning of the course is fairly straightforward but depending on the vehicle chosen by the racers can be taken in one of two ways; if using a Car or Hovercraft racers will take a bridge over a waterfall through to a tunnel in the cliff-side. If in a Plane, racers can veer to the right over the water and take a zipper near some pinnacles. Plane racers can either go through the same tunnel as other racers or can alternatively go through a second tunnel in the cliff-face. All racers will then converge at a stone arch before entering a gloomy looking cave containing a shipwreck. Within the cave the track is bordered by green water, there is a zipper for terrestrial racers while plane racers can access a rainbow balloon. The cave later narrows down into a small torch lit tunnel that curves to the left before exiting at the starting line.

Coin Challenge Locations

The coins only appear after player has beaten Bubbler the Octopus for the first time. In order to reenter the course and compete in the Coin Challenge, the player needs a total of 22 Golden Balloons.

  1. Directly ahead of the starting line, by the cliff wall.
  2. Immediately after exiting the short tunnel on the right, slightly hidden when coming over the hill.
  3. Directly ahead of the zipper under the stone arch.
  4. Just beyond the #7 coin, on the left hand side of the track.
  5. At the entrance to the final tunnel, on the left side.
  6. On the tunnel side of the bridge, on the very right hand side beyond the zipper.
  7. Under the shipwreck to the right side of the track.
  8. At the entrance to the final tunnel, on the right side.

Darkwater Beach (T.T. Trial), Sherbet Island

Diddy Kong Racing Darkwater Beach (T.T. Trial).Darkwater Beach is the battle stage of Sherbet Island. This stage has the same format as Icicle Pyramid where players endeavor to be the last racer left standing in an all-out battle, except this time set in an enclosed bay at night time with the hovercraft as the chosen vehicle.

Description

This the second of the rule-free battle zones, set on the usually tranquil coast of Sherbet Island. It's not so tranquil now though, as the four of you thunder around in search of power-ups to blast one another out of the running. Again, you start with eight bananas each; your goal is to still have some bananas left when your opponents all run out!

Track Layout

The arena for this battle track is fairly straight forward, racers will being on one of two sandy sides of the beach. The track consists of these two sandy beach areas which contain some balloons, several banks within the water of sand containing more balloons, a stony arch in the center of the track, several logs in the water and two stony islands in the water. Racers can ride over the stony islands to collect offensive balloons, or drive under to seek refuge from other racers and collect defensive balloons.

Objective

Diddy Kong Racing Darkwater Beach (T.T. Trial) map. At the start of this stage all players begin with a counter of 8 bananas under their character icon, whoever can hold onto their own bananas while knocking other players out be removing their bananas wins. Each hit a player suffers will remove two of the bananas from their counter so the player can only take four hits before they are eliminated. Bananas can be removed by targeting other players using the power-ups granted by the various balloons around the level (i.e. the rockets from the red balloon or the spikes from the green balloons).

Bubbler's Course, Sherbet Island

Diddy Kong Racing Bubbler's Course. Bubbler's Course is the second boss course of Diddy Kong Racing and its remake Diddy Kong Racing DS and is found in the Sherbet Island world. In this level the player must beat Bubbler the Octopus around a circular water course featuring spinning logs for obstacles. Bubbler himself also drops additional obstacles in the form of spikes (bubbles in the rematch). There are some minor changes to the track in the DS version of the game.

Summary

Once the player beats him the first time Bubbler unlocks the silver coin challenges for all the Sherbet Island race courses. After players have beaten all the silver coin challenge courses players will have a rematch with Bubbler, like the silver coin challenge races this rematch will be more difficult than the original race. Once the player has beaten Bubbler both times the second quarter of the stone carving of Wizpig's head on Timber Island will become colored in to indicate the players success.
