The Horten's Nest

1. Clipping Their Wings, The Horten's Nest

Acquired Equipment
  • Walther P-38
Acquired Equipment
  • Browning Automatic Rifle (B.A.R.)
  • Gewehr 43/44
  • Bazooka
  • Steilhandgrenates
Find weapons stash

Move slowly and not to take any chances. How well you do affects how you do later in the next two stages. Get the rest of the weapons and ammo without getting too shot up. You only have a Walther P-38 and twelve rounds. I suggest you aim very carefully and then finish people off with a gun butt when they stagger. Press action to get out of the ventilation system and clobber the guard outside. One more guard in the downstairs office before you can assess the situation. Be sure to grab the ammunition both guards drop before opening the garage using the panel in the office. Once the garage is opened, the weapons stash is just a room or two past the garage. You get a B.A.R., Gewehr, and Bazooka.

Find spy camera - plus - Find ammunition room

From where you pick up the weapons, head into the barracks and find four sleeping soldiers. You can also open and search the foot chests for health and ammunition. The chest near the lit candle is the one with the spy camera. As soon as you get the spy camera, the door to the ammunition room opens and take your fill on ammunition and take the Steilhandgrenates before you leave. Head back into the barracks and the door to the kitchen open, along with several enemies including the Angry Chef.

Photograph five blueprints - plus - Get the HO-IX plans - plus - Get into factory

Restore health using the bread on the tables and head past the kitchen. The end of the passageway is the wind tunnel, and just past the wind tunnel are the labs. Try to use grenades around each corner before you go in blazing. Turn up the power of the wind tunnel fan to see some results. You are in the lab area once you go past the wind tunnel. There are two labs and the infirmary. You need to check all three rooms for the five blueprints you need to photo before you can leave the area. The racks of chemicals in the labs can be shot to make them exlode without resorting to your precious grenades. The plans are on a table in the back of the infirmary. Once these two objectives are completed, you can head into the factory on the other side of the lab area. If you cannot find the exit, follow the green wall signs that say, "Ausgang," to get to the next area.

Destroy test engine

The first part of the factory is a room choked with non-moving conveyor belts littered with jet engine parts. The upper catwalk is not the way to go; you need to navigate the lower factory floor and head into the next room. There are two respawn points in the conveyor belt room. They are the two small rooms at the far end of the conveyor belt room. To stem the flow of soldiers coming in to reinforce their dead comrades, you need to destroy the stairs at the doorways to each room. Do it by exploding the drums of inflammables underneath each staircase; although enemies may still appear, they do not chase you to the next room. Have patience, progress through the factory slows to a crawl as you save ammo and conserve health. Make every round count and be patient. Make a break for the second room when you hear little or no gunfire. If you are going for the gold rating, you need to kill every soldier that comes out from those two stairways, so you cannot destroy the stairs; you also need to leave and come back repeatedly to make the game spawn even more enemies.

The second room is where the Me-262 bodies are assembled. Go up and around the belts and clutter on the floor. When you enter the second room, head right and go up the stairs then back down again. Enter the test engine area and make a new hole to leave. Head up the stairs above the test engine, past the wall, kill the scientist, and crank up the pressure on the fuel intake until it is in the red (press action repeatedly; this is a good time to reload your weapon). When the needle hits the red, head back out and press the big green button on the console above the test engine. When the fireworks subside, head for the newly made hole.

Leave the facility

Kill the one soldier on the right tunnel with a bazooka shell. More soldiers (about ten) in the tunnel-like area past the test engine wreckage. Be patient and wait for the enemy to rush you. Once you ambush as many soldiers as possible, deal with the stragglers easily. Go past the tunnel area (do not miss the bazooka rounds at one dead end) and encounter a storage room. There is some health ups in the storage room, but save it for when you need it later after the smelter area.

The smelter area has several soldiers and armed workers on the various levels of catwalk. Clear the nearby area with the MP40, then use the Gewehr on the soldiers who are further away. Try to remain small, and stay crouched unless you need to move fast. Attack the troops past the furnace. Patterson needs to head down the ladders on alternating sides and head to the lowest floor of the smelter room before proceeding past the cauldron to the rocky mine-like area to leave the facility. Proceed slowly and once all is quiet in the mine area, head back and pick up some health before going up to the mine cart tracks and end the stage.

2. Enemy Mine, The Horten's Nest

Initial Equipment
  • Browning Automatic Rifle (B.A.R.)
  • Gewehr 43
  • Bazooka
  • Steilhandgrenates
  • Walther P-38
Acquired Equipment
  • STG-44
  • Panzershrek
Ride mine car to radar installation

Pickup the ammo and gear you saw at the end of the last stage. If you are playing on Hard, scour the area for health ups before you leave. Once you get on that mine cart, it is a one way trip. Equip the Browning Automatic Rifle. The second thing is to switch between Aim Mode and not-Aim Mode. You turn faster when you are not in Aim Mode, and Patterson does not turn with the mine cart as it makes curves. The last thing to know is that there are drums of explosives in the first half of the mines, so use the explosive drums to kill enemies.

The first batch of enemies is on the right, then the left. After the first big drop, the mine car is assaulted by a Panzershrek soldier. Learn to shoot the drums, then look ahead for the next likely batch of suckers; Panzershrek troops litter the mine sparsely, but their presence reduces your chances of escaping the stage alive or in good shape for the next one; learn where they are and remember that they are always there in the exact same spot the next time.

There are two medical kits along the track marking the most dangerous points of the stage. A Panzershrek soldier who is not near any explosive drums (whom you can see long before the first medical kit comes to view) blasts you unless you stop him with body or head shots. A second Panzershrek soldier fires from a bunker on the right (shoot the right-most barrel to eliminate this one). A third Panzershrek soldier fires from the next bunker. Since there are so many barrels, concentrate on shooting the barrels rather than the enemies. Once you pass this area (the second medical kit is right before the second bunker Panzershrek). Sweep the B.A.R. at soldiers and do not worry about accuracy. Once you crash through the shaft exit, you end the stage.

3. Under The Radar, The Horten's Nest

Initial Equipment
  • Walther P-38
  • Browning Automatic Rifle (B.A.R.)
  • Gewehr 43/44
  • Bazooka
  • Steilhandgrenates
Acquired Equipment
  • Demo-charges
Find the demo-charges

Crouch and hug the wall. Crawl back to the fallen mine cart and switch to the bazooka. Creep properly not to raise the alarm of any of the four soldiers manning the nest on the other side of the cabin where you started from. Use the first shell to kill the three near the nest, then run to it while switching to the Walther or some other gun. Kill the last soldier and crouch in front of the nest (there are no enemies coming from the mine). Using the nest's sandbags as cover, take out the remaining soldiers up here. Use the Gewehr and snipe at the soldier in the sniper tower, and the Panzershrek soldier on the hill top oon the other side. If you do not see the tube wielding soldier, he spots you. Kill the machine gun soldier across the field. Wait for another soldier to fill the vacancy, then make that job have the fastest turn-over rate ever (use the Gewehr). There is a second Panzershrek soldier in the area, to the left of the radar station entrance and on the ground below. The demo-charges are near the cabin where you started.

Destroy two radar stations

The first radar station go in and kill the soldier. Once the demo-charge blows, the ladder leading down is available. Head across the field but do not use the machine gun unless you are going for a gold rating. It spawns more than a dozen soldiers. Check the second cabin on the ground for B.A.R. ammo and health. Head up the ladder to the start the small trail to the execution area. Head up a second short ladder to cleanse the hillside of any remaining soldiers (the one where you shot the Panzershrek soldier) but be aware that there is another Panzershrek soldier on the hillside. Keep away from the bonfire and scrape up the items.

Head back down the trail and start toward the execution area. There is a Panzershrek soldier along the trail, shoot his head and allow the rocket shell to impact the intervening high ground. The trail splits, head right. There are four soldiers making up the firing squad. Continue on the trail past the execution grounds to the trench maze. The trench maze is covered by two bunkers, both with machine guns. Use the Gewehr to eliminate most of the gun crew in the first bunker before navigating the trench maze. The house at the top of the hill (away from the bunkers) has items and provides cover. Navigate the maze (all while crouching) to some houses that look like bombed-out shells. Alternate between standing and ducking while moving to the top floor and cross the beam under cover from the second machine gun. There is a trail head that leads up to the backs of the bunkers, but be sure to take out as many people you can who are on the radar station's upper walkway. Once it is quiet, head to the rear of the bunkers and throw in grenades. Do not man either of the machine guns unless you want the gold rating. A swarm of a full platoon of crack troops comes if you do.

Past the bunker entrances is the ladder leading to the entrance of the second radar station. Watch for the first of three machine gun guard towers in the distance. Use the Gewehr properly and demo-blast the second radar station to continue onward.

Radio Allied High Command - plus - Enter HO-IX hangar

After blasting the machine gun tower is watch for the last two machine gun guard towers. Deal with any ground troops by leading them back to a secured portion of the trail and scan the distance to the limit with the Gewehr. Eliminate the two machine gun towers with accurate sniper fire or be killed. Reaching the end of the trail, there is a communications structure. A Panzershrek soldier is across the airfield. Ignore the tug towing the HO-IX and focus on finding that tube-carrying soldier. Once he is eliminated, use the Browning to sweep up the rest of the comm-crew, which consists of five soldiers spread out across the two comm-structures. The radio is inside the first comm-structure and the game will tell you where when you get close. Once you complete that objective, you can find the hangar entrance past the second comm-structure.

4. Stealing The Show, The Horten's Nest

Initial Equipment
  • Walther P-38
  • Browning Automatic Rifle (B.A.R.)
  • Gewehr 43/44
  • Bazooka
  • Steilhandgrenates
Acquired Equipment
  • HO-IX
Kill Sturmgeist - plus - Hijack one -- not two, not three, just one -- HO-IX

Patterson starts in the exit of the lower structure where he entered the last stage. After Sturmgeist's cut scene, retreat back around the corner of the small tunnel facility. There are healing items in the tunnel facility and the narrow corridor area means expect to hit whatever you shoot at. There is no time limit, so wait for enemies to round the corner and blast them for health and ammo. If there is a lull, round the corner and draw their fire or kill some soldiers to bait the rest. There are bazooka shells in the starting tunnel as well as Gewehr ammo and some grenades. There are a lot of enemies. Keep up the killing and and no one is outside afterward other than a lot of health and ammo.

Head to the right from the starting tunnel to the hangar the HO-IX is in. An Allied bomb causes the hangar ceiling to collapse, blocking your way to the HO-IX. Take a detour around the rubble to get there. Right after the hangar collapses, a ground crew and a pilot tending to a Messerschmidt jet fighter. Kill all four on your way to Sturmgeist or they come behind and haunt you as you fight Sturmgeist's elite guard. Opening the last door and trigger the cutscene with Sturmgeist, you can switch to your grenades and start tossing all you have into the hangar. There are six elite bodyguards to combat excluding Sturmgeist, use the bazooka and grenades to level the playing field. do not waste all explosives, just one or two to lure out the guards.

Once you think Sturmgeist is the only one left (run across the opening to see or hear how many people are firing), force an obstruction between you and Sturmgeist and toss grenades over the obstacle to blast him. Patterson can also use the bazooka and aim at where Sturmgeist is standing. Your goal is to knock him down (he may not die from the explosion, but he can be knocked down) and then deliver the coup de' grace with a fully loaded B.A.R. Unlike the goons you have fought, Sturmgeist does not get stunned easily from limb hits, so the only way you can fire at him without fear of being shot is to use an explosive to knock him prone. Head over to the HO-IX and press action to bring it home. Sabres and Tigersharks are on the horizon for the USAAF.
