Torture Maze
This test from Cartwright starts out easy enough, but if you get careless you will quickly face the consequences. As it starts, find the large Scepter and pick it up. it is the only weapon you will have for a while, so it is a good idea to get familiar with it. You can attack using either the fire trigger or the melee attack button—both buttons will execute the same attack, but you can actually get faster results by using the melee button.
The first waves of enemies is just a series of Bone Demons that easily die. Stay aggressive to take them out quickly and avoid getting overwhelmed. After fighting off a number of Bone Demons, you will meet another type of Bone Demon. This ghostly enemy is significantly more powerful than the regular type, taking two or three melee attacks to bring down.
When fighting the ghostly Bone Demons, try to rush toward them and get off two quick hits before double jumping away to regain your vampire shield. In fact, the double jump will be your best friend as you fight to survive this event. If you start losing health, be sure to grab the red health orbs dropped by fallen Bone Demons. After defeating a small army of enemies, a doorway in the room will open. Run down the next hall that is occupied by a few people—you can defeat them if you want, but you will be reprimanded for it.
The next area puts you in an open room that is at first crawling with Gunslingers. Use the Scepter to take out the first enemy or two, and be sure to grab their Redeemer pistols as they drop. Riflemen will begin to appear on the tops of the pedestals in the room. You can take cover behind the pedestals and pick off the snipers one-by-one to stay safe. Grab their Carbines to augment your arsenal, then get ready for the next batch of enemies.
Eventually, Riflemen will appear on upper ledges of the room. Again, take cover behind the pedestals (the closer to the wall with the enemies, the easier it is to hide from them). A doorway will soon open up on the upper platform, letting you enter a hall with some ghostly Bone Demons. Take 'em out, jump over the flames, and then take out the last two Riflemen before exiting through the doorway behind them.
In the next trial, you will drop into a large pit that is filled with thick steam. Before you drop down, grab a nearby Shotgun and stock up on ammo (there is some extra ammo in a barrel). You need to locate three valves in the lower area and turn them off to stop the steam. The valves are not very visible through the steam, so you will need to use your blood vision to spot them. You can locate one of them from your perch before dropping into the steam, giving you a quick advantage.
As you roam the lower area, Bone Demons and their ghostly counterparts will swarm at you. Focus first and foremost on the three valves, using blood vision to spot them through the steam. Use your vampire jump while in blood vision to get a good scope of the area and put yourself out of reach of the enemy.
When all three valves are turned, the fog disperses revealing a pack of Banshees. Rush up to the Banshees with your Shotgun and target their little heads. it is hard to snipe them in this area because of all the pipes, so rush tactics work best. When all the Banshees are dead, you will automatically be brought to the next part of Cartwright's test.
Stock up on ammo in the sewers and head forward until a cutscene interrupts you. you will soon meet a new enemy, the Viper, as you round the next corner. Target the Viper's head to force it to teleport away. Once it reappears, zoom in and drop a couple shots into the Viper's skull to put an end to his life.
you will run into a couple more Vipers as you move through the first part of the sewers, though you will only fight them one at a time. The path leads to a narrow uphill trail that winds around a corner. Watch for two Vipers on the path and blast 'em away with your Shotgun.
The path winds upwards and drops off at a set of upper walkways. Continue forward down the narrow path (do not fall!) and watch for the Viper that drops down ahead of you. When you reach the circular platform, turn left and you will see a large tunnel in the wall. Jump to the tunnel and take out the two Vipers inside. As you scour the tunnel you will find a key that is necessary for opening a door just ahead.
Follow the tunnel to a narrow ledge that leads to the locked door. Just through the door is another part of the sewer at the end of which is a ladder that marks the end of the sewers.
Cartwright's next challenge is a bit more difficult. you are dropped into the center of what looks like an old-style town. Quickly run for the buildings on any side of you—staying in this center area is suicide as you are sure to get surrounded. Gunslingers will run toward you through the many doorways, but there is plenty of cover in the area. Use melee attacks and Carbine shots (supported by dynamite explosions in the doorways) to take out the enemies while peeking out to pick off enemy snipers that are guarding the perimeter of the area.
After defeating off a certain number of enemies, the flow of foes will stop and Cartwright will say something like, "Where, oh where could that bullet be coming from?" there is a lone Rifleman perched atop one of the higher buildings and he may be difficult to spot. Look for the bullet streak and zoom in on him with a Range Rifle of your own to take him out.
Another rush of enemies fills the area, and the strategy for defeating them is the same as before. Stick to the area behind the buildings and you should be safe from danger. When all enemies are terminated, you will be brought to the center of the area and caged up with an Oozer.
The direct sunlight temporarily handicaps you, removing your double jump and vampiric shield. Quickly drop dynamite under the Oozer and fire a couple of rounds from a Carbine into the skull of the beast to take it out, then stock up on ammo that is gathered in the center of the cage. You can use a stick of dynamite to blow up a wall of the cage, letting you retreat to the darkness behind the buildings.
Hordes of Bone Demons and ghostly counterparts will swarm at you from all angles. Stick to double jump and Shotgun blasts to quickly take them out. Watch for the occassional Kegger to enter the scene and, as the enemy flow dies down, keep an eye out for a new group of enemies to spawn in the center of town. The Bone Demons will be accompanied by another Oozer, but as long as you stick to the shadows you shouldn't have much to worry about.
