Kokiri Forest - Information

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time #2

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time - Kokiri Forest

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Kokiri ForestThe Kokiri Forest is a location in Ocarina of Time. It is located on the eastern section of Hyrule within the Lost Woods, with Hyrule Field to the west and Zora's Fountain to the north. It serves as the home of the Kokiri tribe as well as its guardian spirit, the Great Deku Tree. The Kokiri Forest is known to be the source of life, maintaining the order of the world and deterring outsiders from ever entering the so-called forbidden forest. The Forest serves as Link's hometown.

The village and Forest region comprises the central part of the Lost Woods. It is located in the southeastern region of Hyrule, and it is accessed through the Lost Woods by crossing a small bridge. It is said that no Kokiri can ever leave the woods, or they will die. The Kokiri Forest itself is a pleasant village filled with tree-houses. There is a Training Center in the northern section of the Forest, where it is said the Kokiri Sword lies hidden. There is also a Shop which sells Deku Shields, among other things.

The Kokiri Forest is actually home to the Great Deku Tree's meadow and is a safe haven, compared to the rest of the Lost Woods. The entrance into the Lost Woods is found on a cliff overlooking the Kokiri Forest village. It is also through the Lost Woods that the Sacred Forest Meadow can ultimately be reached.

It is in this small village that young Link starts his adventure in Ocarina of Time. After venturing inside the Great Deku Tree to save him from Queen Gohma, the Great Deku Tree withers and dies. Seven years later, upon retrieving the Master Sword from its Pedestal, Link must return to the once-peaceful village to find the Forest overrun by monsters such as Deku Babas, Mad Scrubs and Skulltulas, among others. In fear of the monsters, all of the Kokiri decide to take refuge inside their homes. They mention that ever since the Great Deku Tree died, monsters have begun to appear all over the Forest. Link then goes to the Forest Temple to defeat Phantom Ganon in order to break the curse on the temple and awaken Saria as the Sage of the Forest. By doing so, the Deku Tree Sprout is born and the Kokiri Forest returns to normal.

Trivia
  • One aspect that makes the Kokiri Forest (as well as the Lost Woods) unique is the strange particles that float in the air. If Link stays still for a certain length of time, these particles will join together in a single file and move through the air in a fashion similar to Moldorm. When Link moves, however, they burst into individual particles again.
  • Every time Link successfully hops across the slabs in the pond by the shop or across the islets near the Twins' house, he will gain 5 Rupees.
  • If Link chops down the sign near the pond while facing the water, the sign fragments will fall into the water, making a splashing sound, and float. This behavior received special mention in an interview, and is likely an Easter Egg, as to program the splashing and floating, the developers would have had to take extra time to program.

1. Forest Training Center, Kokiri Forest

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Kokiri Forest 1. Forest Training CenterThe Forest Training Center is a location within the Kokiri Forest in Ocarina of Time.

In the Forest Training Center, Link finds the Kokiri Sword as a child. It is located near the house of the Know-It-All Brothers, and it contains several Stones and patches of Grass that Link can use for practicing using the Sword and Targeting.

Within the Forest Training Center is a small hole called the Hole of "Z," which leads to a small maze housing a continuously rolling Boulder and a Treasure Chest containing the Kokiri Sword. If Link comes into contact with the Boulder, he will take damage.

Once Link obtains the Kokiri Sword from the Forest Training Center, he is able to go Inside the Deku Tree, the first Dungeon.

2. Hole of Z, Kokiri Forest

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Kokiri Forest 2. Hole of ZThe entrance to the Hole of "Z" is located within the Forest Training Center, near the Know-It-All Brothers' house. It is a small hole in the forest boundary that Link may crawl through, and leads to a small maze containing a Boulder. If Link makes his way past the rolling Boulder and to the end of the area, he will find the Kokiri Sword inside a Treasure Chest atop a tree stump.

Mido requires that Link possess the Kokiri Sword and Deku Shield to enter the Great Deku Tree's Meadow, so entering the Hole of "Z" is necessary to begin Link's quest.

5. Inside the Deku Tree, Kokiri Forest

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Kokiri Forest 5. Inside the Deku TreeInside the Deku Tree is the first Dungeon of Ocarina of Time. It is the interior of the giant guardian of the Kokiri Forest. When it contracts a mysterious disease, Link must venture inside to destroy the Tree's scourge and to break Ganondorf's curse. It is infested with parasitic creatures, the main one being Queen Gohma. This dungeon contains the Fairy Slingshot.

Entrance to the Deku Tree

The Deku Tree is found east of Kokiri Forest. To reach there, however, Link must show Mido, who is blocking the way, the Deku Shield and Kokiri Sword. After that, Link approaches the dying deity, who talks to him about his situation, and enters.

The Great Deku Tree contains five floors, of which three are over the surface and two are underground. The first three floors resemble a central circling room that, with the exception of the first floor, have branched rooms where Link can find various goods. The two basements are only accessible when Link jumps from a very high spot to the center of the first floor's entrance; most of the puzzles in these basements require Link to kill any enemy or destroy thick webs through the use of fire. The final puzzle appears in the form of three Deku Scrubs which must be defeated in the correct order (second in line, third in line, and first in line) to face the boss, Gohma. There is no mini-boss in this dungeon, although there are two individual Deku Scrubs in the dungeon, as well as the aforementioned group at the end.

To obtain all the Gold Skulltula Tokens, Link must return to the dungeon after getting Bombs and the Boomerang.

In the Master Quest version of the game, besides the obvious change in the puzzles and Gold Skulltula locations, Gohma Larvae now appear all over the dungeon, along with Keese and some Big Deku Babas. There is a Business Scrub that sells a Deku Shield, and the Deku Scrub that reveals the code for accessing the boss's room is missing and has been replaced with a Mad Scrub. The slingshot and compass locations have been switched.

6. Kokiri Shop, Kokiri Forest

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Kokiri Forest 6. Kokiri ShopThe Kokiri Shop is a shop located in the Kokiri Forest that sells items from the surrounding forest it is located in. Like all dwellings and houses in Kokiri Forest, the store is a hollowed tree. However, it has a red line painted around the top of it; along with an awning on which a Kokiri girl is perched, and a flat roof. At the beginning of his journey in Ocarina of Time, Link must visit this shop in order to purchase the Deku Shield for 40 Rupees, which, along with the Kokiri Sword, he needs to pass Mido and meet with the Great Deku Tree.

7. Link's House, Kokiri Forest

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Kokiri Forest 7. Link's HouseOcarina of Time begins with Link being woken up inside his house from a nightmare involving Princess Zelda by Navi the Fairy, on the orders of the Great Deku Tree. Here at Link's House in the Kokiri Forest is where the two companions first meet, although Navi's first insistence is that Link leaves the house to visit the Deku Tree with haste. The house is more or less irrelevant in the game after a point, although an interesting feature that keeps its use alive is a scoreboard within the room, with which Link can inspect his achievements in various mini-games throughout Hyrule.

When loading a saved game, young Link will begin in his home if the game was saved while he was not in a dungeon. Link can obtain a Cow that stays in his house after beating Malon's record of the obstacle course at Lon Lon Ranch as an adult.

In Ocarina of Time 3D, Link has the option to sleep in his bed in the house. By doing this he can either recover his health, or access the Boss Challenge Mode, where he can refight any boss which he has defeated in his quest. A Sheikah Stone can also be found just outside his house.
