Hazy Maze Cave
Hazy Maze Cave is the sixth course in Super Mario 64 and Super Mario 64 DS that consists of a cave network and an underground lake. It also holds the entrance to a level with a cap switch and secret stars. In both games, this course is located in the basement of Princess Peach's Castle. The course has many hidden ledges, nooks, crannies, secrets, alcoves, countless bottomless pits, and even an underground lake with a large but friendly sea monster named Dorrie (who appears to be heavily based on the fabled Loch Ness Monster). A map can be found in many areas of the course.
The The Hazy Maze namesake is located deep within the cave. This maze was referred to as the Toxic Maze, the Clouded Maze, and the Hazy Maze throughout the game. The Hazy Maze is a labyrinth whose passageways are clouded with a highly toxic yellow gas (purple in the remake). Mario's health is slowly depleted the longer he stays in the maze, and will eventually suffocate if he is unable to get fresh air. To make matters worse, the Hazy Maze is full of Snufits, Monty Moles, and Swoopers that can hinder Mario's progress. Fortunately for Mario, there are small areas of higher ground scattered throughout the maze, Green Metal Boxes (Red ? Blocks in the remake) (Metal Mario/Metal Wario and Invisible Luigi are unaffected by the poisonous fumes), a Spinning Heart (in the remake only), and several escape routes that are clearly marked on the map just outside the entrance.
Obtaining certain Stars requires the use of certain escape routes. In the remake, Wario's Cap can be found in all the course's missions, Wario's powers are required to get most of the course's Stars in the remake.
There is a special hidden area in this course called the Cavern of the Metal Cap that can be accessed through a door near the underground lake. The Metal Cap's ! Switch is located here, along with eight more Red Coins that can be collected to receive one of the castle's Secret Stars. In the remake version, the Metal Cavern does not have the metal cap switch and instead has several Power Flowers that can be used for Wario & Mario to be used with an extra Star at the top of the course only accessed by Mario's balloon ability.
To enter Hazy Maze Cave you must have beaten Bowser in the Dark World and unlocked the basement. Upon entering the basement, go to the right and use the door to access the corridors. Follow the corridor toward the right. The entrance to Hazy Maze Cave is through the door with the Star on the right side of the corridors.

1. Swimming Beast in the Cavern, Hazy Maze Cave
From the start of the level, take the path to the left. Long-jump over the hole in the ground and use the door at the other end. Enter an area with giant rolling borders and small platforms surrounding a large hole in the center. Long-jump over to the platforms on the left side, until you reach the hallway the boulders are coming from. Avoid the boulders as you walk further into the hallway and turn right to find a door.
The door leads to a small room with a large square on the ground — that is an elevator. Stand on the elevator and allow it to take you to the area below.
Get off the elevator and continue going further down the cavern reaching the water. Jump in and swim on the surface all the way to the back of the cavern to find a large blue sea creature, Dorrie. Jump onto Dorrie’s back and perform a ground pound. She will lower her head for a few seconds. Walk across her neck and stand on the head. Dorrie will raise her head. Dorrie moves in the direction that Mario is facing; so, look toward the rocky platform in the center of the area. Once Dorrie is close enough to the platform for you to get across, jump onto it and grab the Power Star.
2. Elevate for 8 Red Coins, Hazy Maze Cave
Take the path to the right, while avoiding the enemies and the fire, as you run through the hall. Just before the end perform a long jump and avoid the columns of flames to reach the door and enter the next room. In the next room, jump onto the pole directly to your left and slide down. When you reach the ground, turn around and move the camera to see the rest of the area. In the corner of the room, there is a set of large steps to climb. From the top of the steps, jump onto the ledge on the right to reach the metal platform with arrows on it.
Ride the platform around the area of the room, directing it by stepping on the arrow pads that point in the direction you want to move. There are four Red Coins in this area. One is sitting on the corner of the room. The other three are hidden within the red-brick blocks floating in the air. Hit the blocks or do a ground pound to break them and reveal the Red Coins.
As you maneuver the platform across the area, make sure to jump over any horizontal iron beams, as they can nudge you off the platform if you stand still.
Return to the spot where you initially found the moving platform. Instead of working the controls to get it there yourself, simply drop down and go back up the large steps. The platform will be there waiting for you.
This time, you want to bring the platform up against the wall next to you, and then have the platform follow the wall to reach a ledge with a pole. The large stone pillar will prevent you from bringing the platform next to the ledge, so get it as close as possible, and then, long-jump to get there.
Climb up the pole and jump onto the platform to the left. From there, you can walk onto a checkered platform. This platform carries you as it follows a track around the room. During the ride, avoid or destroy a brick block and a Swoop (blue bat). The platform will carry you to the three remaining Red Coins. After grabbing the final coin, the Power Star will appear in the center of the area below. Ground-pound to get down there and get it.
3. Metal-Head Mario Can Move!, Hazy Maze Cave
To obtain this star, you must first unlock the Cavern of the Metal Cap.
Getting to the Watery Cavern
Use the elevator that leads to the watery cavern where you first saw Dorrie, the sea creature. To get to the elevator: From the start of the level, take the path to the left. Long-jump over the hole in the ground and use the door at the other end. Enter an area with giant rolling borders and small platforms surrounding a large hole in the center. Long-jump over to the platforms on the left side until you reach the hallway the boulders are coming from. Avoid the boulders as you walk further into the hallway, and turn right to find a door. The door leads to a small room with a large square on the ground — that is an elevator. Stand on the elevator and allow it to take you to the area below.
At the Watery Cavern
When you reach the bottom of your elevator ride, jump to hit the green !-Block on the left to become Metal Mario. Quickly go down the path toward the water. When you reach the water, walk clockwise (left) around the shallow part of the lake floor — do not go into the deep end. You reach a darker rocky slope that leads closer to the water’s surface. Walk up the slope and step on the large switch on the ground.
The switch opens a gate on the left that allows you to access the door that leads into the final room. The final room tests your long-jump skills. Perform two long jumps to cross hop over the holes and reach the Power Star at the far end.
4. Navigating the Toxic Maze, Hazy Maze Cave
It is recommended you first unlock the Cavern of the Metal Cap before attempting this star.
Return to the area where you got the Red Coins. To get to that area: Take the path to the right, avoid the enemies and the fire as you run through the hall. Just before the end perform a long jump and avoid the columns of flames to reach the door and enter the next room. Jump onto the pole directly to your left and slide down.
After sliding down the pole, the wall with the large map should be on your left. Beside the map is a signpost. Walk toward the signpost and into the corridor just past it. Use the door at the end of the corridor to enter a small room with two more signposts that warn you about the toxic gas in the area below. Jump into the hole in the ground at the corner of the room to enter the Toxic Maze.
The maze is filled with gas, which is indeed toxic and therefore harms Mario, as well as Snufits that shoot you on sight.
- From the start, run straight to reach the green !-Block; then, continue through the 90-degree turn
- Before reaching the raised platform, a path opens on the left. Take it!
- Keep going as the maze curves clockwise.
- Stop when you reach the left wall with the green moss hanging down. Watch your step, as there are several holes in this area.
- Crouch and jump to reach the ledge above, where the moss begins.
- Use the door to enter the next area.
In the next area, avoid the Swoops and fire as you run to the end of the hall and reach the square elevator on the ground. Stand on the elevator to the area above. Turn around and grab the Power Star.
5. A-Maze-ing Emergency Exit, Hazy Maze Cave
It is recommended you first unlock the Cavern of the Metal Cap before attempting this star.
Reaching the Toxic Maze
For this Star, you have to return to the Toxic Maze. If you already know how to reach the Toxic Maze, skip to the next section. If you need directions to reach the maze: Take the path to the right, avoid the enemies and the fire as you run through the hall. Just before the end, perform a long jump between and avoid the columns of flames to reach the door and enter the next room. Jump onto the pole directly to your left and slide down.
After sliding down the pole, the wall with the large map should be on your left. Beside the map is a signpost. Walk toward the signpost and into the corridor just past it. Use the door at the end of the corridor to enter a small room with two more signposts (they’ll warn you about the toxic gas in the area below - no big deal). Jump into the hole in the ground at the corner of the room to enter the Toxic Maze.
Inside the Toxic Maze
The path is similar to the one for Star #4 Navigating the Toxic Maze. The ledge you need to jump to for this Star is much closer than the previous one.
- Run straight to reach the green !-Block; then, continue through the 90-degree turn
- Before reaching the raised platform, a path opens on the left. Take it.
- As the maze curves clockwise, continue walking until about halfway through the curve.
- Jump next to the left wall to reach a ledge at the apex of the curve.
- Step onto the ledge and use the door to enter the next area.
Out of the Maze
Watch out for Swoops as you go further into the room and reach the elevator on the floor. Stand on the elevator and let it take you to the area above. Once there, you can see the Power Star on a platform to the right.
The only way to get there is by hanging onto the metal gratings overhead. Jump and keep the jump button held down to hold onto the grating. Keep to the right side as you climb across to reach the Star. Be careful to stay as close to the center of the grating as possible as you make the sharp right turn toward the star’s platform. Let go and grab the Power Star.
6. Watch for the Rolling Rocks, Hazy Maze Cave
Take the path to the left. Long-jump over the hole in the ground and use the door at the other end. The room has giant rolling borders and small platforms surrounding a large hole in the center. Long-jump over to the platforms on the left side until you reach the hallway the boulders are coming from. Avoid the boulders as you walk further into the hallway and turn right to find a door.
Do not go through the door; instead, stand several steps away from the door. Face the door so that you have a wall on your left, a wall on your right, and you are safe from the rolling rocks behind you. Perform two wall kicks in this hallway to reach a ledge that is out-of-view. Jump toward the wall on the right side and do a kick to bounce toward the left wall. Kick again to bounce toward the right and reach the hidden ledge with the Power Star on it. It may feel awkward at first, since you cannot see what you are aiming for, but it is there.
7. 100 Coins Star, Hazy Maze Cave
Collect 100 coins without dying or leaving a level to earn an additional star. Collect all the coins you see laying around but do keep in mind the following tips as you play. There is a possible 139 coins to collect.
- Make sure to defeat all enemies. Snufits and Scuttle Bugs give out three coins each.
- The Mr. I enemies give blue coins when defeated.
- There is a blue switch in the toxic maze that gives a hefty 35 coins if all coins are collected.
This is one of the worse 100-Coin hunts in Super Mario 64, so prepare to have you patience tested as you run around the entire level scrounging for every coin you can find. From the start make sure you are killing every Scuttlebug you see as you head toward the Red Coin room. They are worth 3 coins each.
Grab all the Red Coins, defeat more Scuttlebugs and the eyeball enemies if you can, then move into the toxic maze. In the toxic maze continue to defeat all enemies you can using the Metal Cap, and find the Blue Coin switch for a big burst of coins.
Clear out this entire area as well as you can then head back to the start, making your way to the rolling rocks area where you can find more coins and go to the water area. There is a ring of coins in the elevator room you can grab on the way, and another ring of coins on the center platform in the Nessie room.
This should get you very close to 100-Coins, so keep running around killing any bats and bugs you can until you hit it.
- At the start, stomp on the Scuttlebug for three coins.
- Take the right path, and another Scuttlebug will jump out of the pit. Stomp on it for another three coins.
- There is a line of five coins after the pit.
- Head into the door at the end of the path, and slide down the pole. There are two more Scuttlebugs down here for six coins in total.
- Get the first four red coins as described in that section of the walkthrough.
- Head into the door that leads into the Hazy Maze Cave. There are five coins leading into it.
- Jump into the cave. There is a Snifit up ahead that gets you two coins.
- Go straight and to the right, where you will find a blue coin switch. Do not press it just yet. Instead, turn left and kill the four Swoopers for four coins. The Metal Cap is very handy for this part.
- Grab the Metal Cap if you have not already, hit the blue coin switch, and then run very quickly to get 7 blue coins. You need to turn back the way you came, go to the right, and then follow the path.
- At the end of the blue coin trail, it leads up to a little alcove with a door. Enter the door and kill the two Swoopers contained within that room.
- At the end of that room, there is an elevator. Go up the elevator and enter the door at the top. Above the Black Hole, jump up and grab onto the cage, and get the five yellow coins that lead to the A-maze-ing Emergency Exit star.
- Turn around and head back the way you came. Instead of taking the right path which leads to the star, take the middle path, which leads to a ! Block with a 1-Up. Jump down to the bottom and kill either a Scuttlebug or a Swooper.
- Head up the way with the rolling rocks. There are five coins on that way. Head through the door at the end, where there are eight coins surrounding a ! Block with a 1-Up.
- Go down to the underground lake and get the eight coins that surround the star on the island. You should have 100 coins.
Trivia
- This is one of the few levels not accessed via a painting; instead, Mario must enter the door to the right of the entrance to Lethal Lava Land and jump into a pool of liquid metal inside.
- Even though this course is named "Hazy Maze Cave," none of the areas in the cave but the aforementioned maze contain fog.
- In the Nintendo DS version, Dorrie can be seen wearing a Wario Cap which can turn the player into Wario.
- This world has two Power Stars that can be obtained by gaining eight Red Coins. One in a secret area and the other being in the main area.
- This is the only main course in the game that has a Cap Switch.
- This is the only underground cave-like main course in the game.
- This is the only main course to include Dorrie.
- In Super Mario 64, the low collision detection made it so that the Power Star of Metal-Head Mario Can Move! can be collected without using the Metal Cap.
1-Up Mushroom Locations
The following is a list of where to find all four green mushrooms.
- Continually jump on the moles in two locations in the maze (two 1ups).
- Inside a ! Block above the Black Hole.
