Bob-omb Battlefield

Super Mario 64 Bob-omb Battlefield layout.Bob-omb Battlefield (ボムへいの せんじょう Bob-ombs' Battlefield?) is a world in Super Mario 64. This world serves as the first world in these games as Mario does not need any Power Stars to enter. It is located on the first floor of Princess Peach's Castle, through the door on the far left. Bob-omb Battlefield takes place in a grassland area with many trees. It contains several mountains and hills which can be climbed. The ruler of this land is King Bob-omb, who sits at the top of the mountain in the middle. The Bob-ombs are having a war with the Bob-omb Buddies, who are your friends, so you will have to stop them from destroying everything. There are several Red ! Blocks and six cannons in the level. It is impossible to fall off the course here. Common enemies here include Goombas, Bob-ombs, and a Chain Chomp (the only one in the game).

Like every world in our Super Mario 64 walkthrough, Bob-omb Battlefield has a total of seven stars to collect. Six are obtained through the level stages while the final star is earned once you collect 100 coins in a single run.

Layout

The setting of the course takes place on and around a mountain, split between the territories of the two Bob-omb races. The player starts in the Bob-omb Buddies' territory, far off from the mountain in an area with two Bob-omb Buddies and a cannon that is available to use after the player has collected the first Power Star, along with a couple of crates and Goombas farther ahead. To the left of the starting area are a few Bob-ombs and a gate that has to be opened by pressing the Purple Switch on the other side of it, providing a shortcut should it be opened. Additionally, several iron balls roll down the slope and collide around this area. Going up the bridge from the starting area leads the player into a field with several large rocks, Goombas, a Koopa Troopa, and a Chain Chomp. Several water bombs fall into this area, damaging the player character if he comes into contact with them. Crossing the teetering bridge ahead brings the player into the Big Bob-omb's territory.

To the left of the bridge is an area with a couple of Goombas and several stumps, in the middle of which is the Star Marker for this course. Up the short set of stairs is a large field with many Bob-ombs and a cannon, along with water bombs falling from the sky to attack the player. At the end of the field is a path leading behind the gate from earlier. Going up the stone path leads into the base of the mountain, which has two iron balls (or three except for the first Star in the original version) rolling around in the crevice. The way up the mountain is a spiraling pathway with iron balls constantly rolling down it and gaps the player has to jump over. The player can also use a Warp Point, located in the small cave the iron balls roll out of, to instantly travel up to the top of the mountain. At the top of the mountain lies either the Big Bob-omb during the first mission, the flagpole during the race against Koopa the Quick during the second mission, or nothing at all during any other mission.

Also on the course is a floating island that does not appear to be controlled by either territory. The island contains a red block containing a Wing Cap/feather, a yellow block containing a Power Star, and a cannon that can be used to collect the rings of coins floating in the air.

Enemies encountered

Goombas, Bob-ombs, Koopa Troopa, Chain Chomp, Big Steely, and King Bob-omb (boss)

1. Big Bob-omb on the Summit, Bob-omb Battlefield

Layout

In Super Mario 64, Mario should reach the mountain's summit of the Bob-omb Battlefield to fight the Big Bob-omb. Mario encounters several obstacles and enemies along the main path, including Goombas, Bob-ombs, a Chain Chomp, and iron balls that roll down the road spiraling around the mountain. Once Mario reaches the summit, he confronts the Big Bob-omb, who introduces himself as the "lord of all blasting matter," accuses Mario of trespassing, and battles him for a Power Star. Mario can defeat the Big Bob-omb by carrying him from behind and throwing him to the ground three times. If Mario approaches from the front, however, the Big Bob-omb grabs him and tosses him away. If Mario throws the Big Bob-omb off the summit plateau, he jumps back up, declares that Mario has cheated, and makes him restart the match.

When defeated, the Big Bob-omb is surprised that he is beaten by someone who seems weak, but he acknowledges that his troops could benefit with Mario as a role model. Upon defeat, he breaks the fourth wall by saying that if Mario wants to fight him again, he should "select this Star from the menu." After that, the Big Bob-omb bids farewell, explodes, and releases a Power Star.

Walkthrough

At the beginning of the level are the Bob-omb Buddies. They will give you access to the cannon right next to them. The cannon will allow you to go to higher places, such as clouds.

Right after them is a bridge which the Goombas are guarding and a huge Chain Chomp is guarding a star. All around are Bob-ombs that will blow up all over, and in the middle is a mountain with boulders coming down.

Koopa the Quick will also offer to race Mario to the top once King Bob-omb is defeated by Mario. The last level of Bob-omb Battlefield is where Mario has to beat the Chain Chomp you have seen in all the other levels. To beat it, one will have to ground-pound on its peg. Once the peg is totally in the ground, the Chain Chomp will be freed and give you its Star. There are several Wing Cap Blocks and six cannons in the level.

To collect the first Star of the game, Mario needs to advance throughout the course and scale the mountain until reaching the top of the summit. There are Goombas, a Chain Chomp, water bombs, and Big Steelies which roll down the path along the way. Mario encounters King Bob-omb. To defeat him, go behind him and lift him up to slam him to the ground. King Bob-omb then makes a single bounce and gets back up. Mario must repeat this step two more times in order to fully defeat King Bob-omb to gain his first Power Star, allowing him to gain access to the top-right room with Princess Peach's Slide and Whomp's Fortress.

Defeat Big Bob-omb. Being in front of him is dangerous. If you get too close to Big Bob-omb, he will grab you and throw you, possibly off the edge of the mountain. If you are off the mountain too long, the battle will start over again.

To defeat Big Bob-omb, walk behind him and grab his back. Once you have grabbed him, throw him onto the ground to make him take a hit. do not throw him off the mountain — it will not count. Keep the battle at the mountain top where you are. Do this two more times and he will explode. Pick up the Power Star he leaves behind to complete the level!

2. Footrace with Koopa the Quick, Bob-omb Battlefield

Layout

When Mario enters the mission, Koopa the Quick is waiting nearby. If Mario talks to him, he asks about Mario's victory against the Big Bob-omb. He says that Mario would have to be fairly strong and fast to defeat the Big Bob-omb but that he is slower than Koopa. He then challenges Mario to a race towards the top of the mountain. When the race starts, Mario has to make it to the top and touch a flagpole at the summit's center. The cannons cannot be used, as Koopa accuses Mario of trying to scam him if Mario jumps into a cannon at any point during the race. However, Mario is allowed to enter the iron balls' alcove midway up the mountain and warp to the other alcove close to the mountaintop. If Mario loses the race, Koopa boasts about his victory, and he cannot be rechallenged until the mission is restarted. If Mario wins, Koopa admits that Mario is fast and rewards him a Power Star.

The mission is slightly different in Super Mario 64 DS. If Yoshi, Luigi, or Wario talks to Koopa, Koopa asks him to bring Mario to him. If Mario (or one of the other characters wearing Mario's cap) talks to him, he says that Mario has "put on a few pounds" since the last time he saw him. Koopa then decides that a race to the top of the Bob-omb Battlefield's mountain will be good exercise. The same rules still apply; however, if the other characters lose Mario's cap and finish the race, Koopa asks where Mario is before believing that Mario abandoned the race due to Koopa's superior speed.

Walkthrough

For this Power Star you have got to beat Koopa the Quick in a race to the top of the mountain — the same mountain you fought Big Bob-omb. Speak to the large Koopa at the start of the level and accept his challenge to race him. The goal is to reach the flag on the summit of the mountain before your racing rival does. Since you cannot use cannons, use a similar path to that of the first level. Make sure to also use long jumps to move faster too.

Super Mario 64 - 2. Footrace with Koopa the Quick - Bob-omb Battlefield 1.

The fastest way up is the same way described in the first mission. Run up the path ahead and cross the first bridge. Follow the path as it turns left. Stick close to the wall to avoid the Chain Chomp. After passing the Chain Chomp, cross over the teetering bridge ahead and run toward the signs with red arrows that lead you through the gap in the fencing ahead.

You can jump over them, or step around them if there is enough room. Dodge the rolling balls while jumping over the gaps in the path (to make it over the last gap, use a running long jump). When you get to the top, simply touch the flag and wait for Koopa the Quick to catch up and give you your prize.

3. Shoot to the Island in the Sky, Bob-omb Battlefield

Layout

The floating island is near the big mountain. Mario can use two of the Bob-omb Battlefield's four cannons to reach the island, which are opened if Mario talks to the Bob-omb Buddy near the stage's entrance. The first cannon is on a rock in the field to the right of the Chain Chomp. The other cannon is on the mountain, and it directly faces this floating island. The Wing Cap, found inside scattered red blocks, can also help Mario reach the island. Once Mario reaches the island, he can break the yellow block and grab its Power Star.

Walkthrough

Talk to the pink Bob-omb Buddy at the start of the level to unlock the cannon. Go up the wooden bridge and look for a cannon inside the top of a nearby rock. Look up at the floating island above you and aim just above the top of the tree and shoot the cannon. After grabbing onto the tree, open the yellow block to reveal the star.

You must do as the mission title says, “shoot to the island in the sky.” There is a small island floating in the air near the side of the mountain. Getting there is your goal.

Super Mario 64 - 3. Shoot to the Island in the Sky - Bob-omb Battlefield 1.

Talk to the pink Bob-omb straight ahead of where you start to open the cannons in the level. Use a cannon to get there, though cannon at the very front will not do the trick. you will need to reach the cannon that is on the mountain. it is on the path near the top of the mountain.

Super Mario 64 - 3. Shoot to the Island in the Sky - Bob-omb Battlefield 2.

Head up the mountain — you have already done this twice before. There is a cannon halfway up the mountain with a black Bob-omb standing next to it. that is not the cannon you want; it is just there to shoot water. Keep going up the path. The cannon you want is near the top, next to the Heart Icon that heals you. Jump into the hole in the ground to drop inside the cannon and make it appear.

Super Mario 64 - 3. Shoot to the Island in the Sky - Bob-omb Battlefield 3.

Gravity will pull Mario down, so you may need to aim slightly higher from where you want to land. Aim for the floating island so that Mario slides across the ground, or aim at the tree so that Mario grabs onto it. Either way, once you are up there, walk around the island to see a yellow box. Break it to reveal the Star.

4. Find the 8 Red Coins, Bob-omb Battlefield

Layout

One of the Red Coins is located above the moving platforms on the main path, one is located above the Chain Chomp's stump, one is located on a rock near the Chain Chomp, one is found under the bridge leading to the mountain, one is on the steep incline at the base of the mountain, one is above a tree on the floating island near the mountain, and two are found in the center of four logs. Once all eight Red Coins are collected, the Power Star appears at the Star Marker in the log area.

The Power Star appears in the field where the fourth and fifth coins were. Use the cannon on the floating island to launch yourself in that direction and collect your Star.

5. Mario Wings to the Sky, Bob-omb Battlefield

Layout

The rings are located near the floating island, where Shoot to the Island in the Sky's Power Star is located. The coins can be collected by using a Wing Cap, which is found on the floating island and near the moving platforms on the main path, or by using a cannon, which is located near the stage's entrance and partway up the mountain. Once all five middle coins have been collected, the Power Star appears near the area with four stumps, next to Find the 8 Red Coins' Power Star.

Walkthrough

For this Mission, you need to have collected 10 Power Stars and unlocked the Wing Cap.

Wing Cap required. Use a cannon to shoot yourself up to the floating island. Grab the Wing Cap from the red block and jump into the cannon. Aim at the coin in the center of the first ring of coins and blast off. Thanks to the Wing Cap, you can push down to get Mario to fly upwards. Fly through all coin five rings and a star will appear in the log area.

After unlocking the Wing Cap from the hidden level in the hallway, what the player needs to do here is to get the Wing cap, get to the island in the sky, and get into the cannon. The player must control Mario's flight through each ring of coins. Mario must collect the Coins in the center of the Coin Rings. Once done, the Star will appear. It is possible to get the Star without the Wing Cap (and without activating the Wing Cap Switch) via the use of the Cannon on it is own, but this takes good aiming and cannot be done in one try.

With the Wing Cap on, run over to the start of the level and jump into the cannon. Aim at the floating island and shoot. Then, fly to land onto it. On jump to hit the red !-Block to refresh the Wing Cap. Hop in the cannon that is on the island platform.

Just ahead there are five rings of coins — the goal is to collect the coins that are at the centers of each of the five rings (five coins total). You do not have to make it in one swoop; so, if you miss a coin or two, or all of them, just float back to the platform and fire yourself off again. Once you have collected all five center coins, the Power Star will appear near the field where the Red Coin Star was. Float down and collect the Star.

6. Behind Chain Chomp’s Gate, Bob-omb Battlefield

Layout

The Power Star is visible behind a set of iron bars, which can be removed only by ground-pounding the stump that the Chain Chomp's chain is attached to three times. This frees the Chain Chomp, letting it break the bars and escape. In Super Mario 64 DS, the Star is slightly lower, and its associated mission is unchanged; however, there are a few more methods to obtain the Star. The player can use Vanish Luigi to phase through the bars, and Wario can flatten the stump with a single Pound the Ground attack. The player can also use a mushroom found inside a Brick to flatten the stump. During 5 Silver Stars!, the Chain Chomp is running out in the field, and as a result, the player must use Vanish Luigi to collect the Star.

Through a glitch, it is possible to use an exploding Bob-omb to clip through the bars instead.

The Chain Chomp is the huge ball with teeth that is chained to a post in the area just after crossing the first bridge. Head over to the Chain Chomp. See the post that he is stuck to? Ground pound (jump, then press crouch in mid-air) the post three times to free him. Once he is free, he will break the gate behind him, allowing you to collect the Star.

7. 100 Coins Star, Bob-omb Battlefield

As with every main course in the game, collecting 100 coins earns a star. There are many, many ways to collect 100 coins. This is one such route. Note: It is advised to get this star on stars 3-6, and after you have unlocked the Wing Cap.

  • Right when you enter the level, head to the brick blocks right in front of you. The left one contains three coins.
  • Go down the path and stomp on the two Goombas, which give you two coins.
  • Below the bridge, there are five coins laid out in a neat line.
  • Head to the field just beyond that bridge. There is a Koopa Troopa there, and if you manage to hit him, you can get his shell. Hit him again, and a blue coin - or 5 yellow coins - comes out.
  • Go all the way around the field stomping on Goombas. You can get six coins from them in total.
  • There is a Bob-omb near Chain Chomp that will give you another coin.
  • Get into the cannon, shoot to the floating island, and get the red coin on top of the tree.
  • Grab a wing cap and fly around, collecting the coins in the sky. You need at least 10.
  • Go back down to the field, and go along getting three red coins.
  • Run past Chain Chomp and over the tilting bridge to the paddock, and get two more red coins.
  • Get the three Goombas for three more coins.
  • There are four posts in the field. If you run around one of the posts three times clockwise, five coins jump out. You can do this for each of the posts for a total of 20 coins.
  • In the Battleground, there are 4 Bob-ombs, with 4 coins.
  • In the corner of the world, there is a flower bed, surrounded by 8 yellow coins.
  • Go down to the little alcove, where there is another Bob-omb.
  • Another red coin is here as well.
  • Press the ! Switch and the gates open. Run out the gates and get four coins from the four Bob-ombs.
  • Run back through the gate and start climbing the mountain. After a short while, you will come across a grassy plain with a single Bob-omb.
  • At the end of that plain is a slide, with a red coin.
  • Climb back up the mountain, and head past the first warp to another Bob-omb. You will have to be careful here, as the coin can easily drop off the side of the mountain.
  • 5 coins are in a neat line near the cannon that the Bob-omb was manning.
  • A little further on, there is a cannon that you can use, and five coins next to it. You should have at least 100 coins by now, and the star appears right over your head once you get the 100th.
Super Mario 64 - 7. 100 Coins Star - Bob-omb Battlefield 1.

Here are some good ways to get the 100-coin star target in this course. First of all, the eight red coins (obviously) bump your total to 16, a good start. From the beginning of the stage, there are some brown stones that you can destroy (throw the smaller stone at the bigger stone or punch them), which release some coins. Before the wooden bridge, stomp the Goombas and blow up the Bob-ombs for some coins (there are lots of Bob-ombs on the left side of the wooden bridge). There is a row of yellow coins beneath the wooden bridge to bump up your total some more.

Super Mario 64 - 7. 100 Coins Star - Bob-omb Battlefield 2.

After going up the wooden bridge, you can take out the Goombas (1 coin each) for a good sum of coins, and the Koopa Troopa for a blue coin (which is worth five coins). After you have collected the coins here, go across the see-saw. Head into the field to the left of the stone steps, where you can fight some Goombas and gain coins. Also in this field, you will find some wooden stakes. Run around them in circles quickly to make each release five coins. Do this for all of them to get a total of 20 coins.

Super Mario 64 - 7. 100 Coins Star - Bob-omb Battlefield 3.

In the nearby area (just before the gate that leads into the mountain), you can take out some Bob-ombs (pick 'em up and throw 'em) to get a few more coins. There is also a ring of eight coins around the shrubs nearby (collecting these also releases a 1-Up Mushroom). Finally, you can go to the floating island, equip the Wing Cap, and blast off in the cannon to get the rings of coins in the sky – and you should then have enough to get the Star. It will appear above the last coin you collect.

Super Mario 64 - 7. 100 Coins Star - Bob-omb Battlefield 4.

1-Up Mushroom Locations

  1. There is a tree next to the cannon by the Koopa Troopa. Climb to the very top and a 1-Up will start chasing you around.
  2. Get the coins surrounding the flower bed in the corner of the battleground. The 1-Up will appear out of the flower bed afterwards.
  3. Next to the "!" switch that opens the gate by the falling cannonballs.

Statistics for Bob-omb Battlefield

  1. Total Number of Coins: 146
  2. Caps Found: Wing Cap (3)
  3. Spinning Heart: Near the top of the mountain.
  4. Cannons: 6
