Jolly Roger Bay
Jolly Roger Bay is the third level of the game Super Mario 64. Three stars are required to access it. Eels, Giant Oysters, Goombas and falling pillars makes this course a little harder than the previous ones. Sunken and floating pirate-ships from a time past, giant caves with monsters and treasures, and some cannoning to the highest peaks of the level are what awaits you. Swimming is not all that fun and easy. Controls become a little harder as you now are able to control all directions - up, down, left and right.
The overall course is a large cove filled with water and surrounded by large cliffs amid a blue sky. On land, there are several green ! Blocks, a Cannon, and a ! Switch which makes a bridge to the Ship. Below the water is a massive drop off where Unagi the Eel resides (the Ship is located around this area). One of this stage's most unique features is that layers of the music get added as Mario (or Yoshi) dives in the water and another is added as you enter the ocean cave. Jolly Roger is also the name given to the typical pirate flags. It is also the name of the infamous pirate ship of Captain Hook, the pirate from Peter Pan.
The entrance to Jolly Roger Bay is on the main floor of Peach's Castle, up the stairs to the right, and behind the star door labeled "3," meaning that three Power Stars are required to enter.
Layout
The player starts on the shore of the lake, which consists of a yellow block to the left and a green block (or red in the DS version) to the right. In the DS remake, the shore also contains Goombas and a block containing a Shiny Shell. Over to the right is a platform with a Bob-omb Buddy, who opens the cannon of the level when talked to. A large spire with a Red Coin at the top is located nearby, and going across the platform on the water leads to a series of platforms and another green/red block. Pressing the Purple Switch makes additional platforms appear, making it easier to cross them all. At the end of these platforms is the raised ship, but only in missions two and onward. The ship provides a platform for the player to reach three of the Red Coins in the level, as well as the location of the Power Star that appears when all the Red Coins are collected.
In the Nintendo 64 version, during the first mission, Plunder in the Sunken Ship, a thin fog covers the area, and the sky is darker than in other missions. The player can enter the ship in the lake through a broken window after luring Unagi the eel out. The inside of the ship is full of water and contains several Treasure Chests and platforms. Opening these chests in the correct order drains the ship and allows the player to jump up the platforms and collect the Power Star at the top. Strangely, the drained ship's interior remains upright when it should be horizontal, as the ship is presumably floating on the water. After the player collects the first Star, the fog and dark sky effects bizarrely do not return anywhere in the level, even if the player replays Plunder in the Sunken Ship.
Above the water, near the start of the level, is a cannon that is needed to reach the Power Star during the mission Blast to the Stone Pillar. Below the cannon underwater are a ring of coins and two clam shells: The one on the right has a Shiny Shell, and the other has a Red Coin. Past the three stone pillars is a large trench where the ship lies during the first mission. During any other mission, a jet stream is in the ship's place and Unagi is moved to a crevice up above. The Ocean Cave is to the west, containing many triangular columns that fall on the player if they get too close, Goombas, and a green/red block. At the back of the cave are several Treasure Chests that provide the third Star when opened in the correct order and, in the DS version, a large fenced-off area containing another Star.

1. Plunder in the Sunken Ship, Jolly Roger Bay
Layout
The sunken ship is located at the bottom of the bay, at the other end of where the player starts. It can be entered only through a small hatch, which is guarded by Unagi the eel. After the player dives down to the boat, Unagi must be lured out of the hatch before it can be entered. Once Unagi leaves, it starts circling above the ship but lets the player enter. In Super Mario 64, there are four Treasure Chests inside the ship that must be opened in the correct order. If this is done correctly, the ship rises to the surface, draining all of the water out. Once all of the water is gone, the player can climb up a series of platforms to reach a yellow block. This block contains the mission's Power Star, and collecting it completes the mission.

Walkthrough
Jump into the water. Stay on the surface of the water and swim further into the cavern. After passing the large stalagmites on your left, make sure your breath is full and dive down. Swim toward the sunken ship on the lake floor. Go toward the back of the ship to find a large eel. Swim close to it to lure it away from its position. Wait for the eel to disappear; then, swim through the hole behind it.
Once you are inside the ship, swim down to the chest directly in front of you — it is on its own next to the wall. Open the chest and swim into the bubble of air, which will replenish your breath. From this chest, turn around, and to see three chests nearby. You must open them in the correct order to drain the water from the ship. Open the left one first, then the one on the right. Lastly, turn around and open the middle chest.
This will cause the water to drain. Use this time to swim toward the yellow box at the highest platform. If you do not make it, go for whatever highest platform you can. This can be frustrating as the non-platform sections makes you slip. Try using double jumps to get higher up the slope. Hit the yellow box at the top to reveal the star.
NOTE: It will be possible for you to swim to the far end of the ship before the water is completely drained. If the water is drained, jump up the platforms to reach the yellow !-Block containing the Star.
2. Can the Eel Come out and Play?, Jolly Roger Bay
Layout
The Power Star for this mission is found at the tail end of Unagi the eel, who was freed during the first mission and is now inside an underwater cave. Unagi must be lured out of the cave by swimming in front of it. After that, the Power Star can be obtained from Unagi's tail, though Unagi starts to quickly swim around. Once the player touches the Star, it moves to the opening below Unagi's cave, and the player is able to collect it. If Unagi returns to its cave, the player will have to lure it out again once it pops out.

Walkthrough
Start swimming toward the ship that is now on the surface. When you reach the back wall of the cavern, dive down to see the eel's head poking out of a small cave along the wall. Swim toward it and the eel will start to swim out, giving you a shot at the Power Star that is stuck to its tail. Be careful not to touch the eel itself, as touching it will hurt you.
Swim up to the surface to refill your breath, and then come back down. You should be able swim after the eel and touch the Power Star on its tail. If you do not get it in time, Lure the eel out and try again. Once you touch the Power Star on the eel’s tail, it will bounce off and settle under the cave entrance from which the eel swam out. The star will remain there until you get it. Therefore, if you are too far away and your breath is low, resurface first, then dive down to get the star.
3. Treasure of the Ocean Cave, Jolly Roger Bay
Layout
The third Power Star is found inside the Ocean Cave, which can be reached only by swimming through an underwater tunnel near the bottom of the bay. The cave is outside the water, and at its entrance is a sign that threatens anyone who enters with "certain disaster." Inside are triangular columns that fall in the player's direction, potentially crushing them. In Super Mario 64, Mario can grab a Metal Cap that makes him impervious to the columns' damage.
Past the columns are some Treasure Chests and a sign that was left by The Cap'n. The sign tells the player that The Cap'n has hidden a treasure, and the chests must be opened in a specific order in order to obtain it. If a chest is opened in the wrong order, the player gets shocked with a weak bolt. Once all four chests are opened in the correct order (back, left, right, front), the final chest releases a Power Star that the player is free to obtain.

Walkthrough
Swim toward the back of the cavern to reach the stern (backside) of the ship. Directly under the ship's stern is a tunnel entrance along the wall that leads to another section of the cave. Dive deep to reach it. Use the formation of coins as a nav-point—swim toward the coins and head into the tunnel. Keep swimming until you reach the other end of the tunnel.
Run to the very end of this new cavern, avoiding the falling rock pillars that come down around you. At the end, There is a formation of four treasure chests. Open them up in the correct order to earn the Power Star.
- First: Open the chest that is all the way to the back, touching the cave wall.
- Second: Open the chest that is all the way to the left.
- Third: Open the chest that is all the way to the right.
- Fourth: Open the final chest, which is the one at the front and center, to get the Power Star.
4. Red Coins on the Ship Afloat, Jolly Roger Bay
Layout
In Super Mario 64 DS, the Bob-omb Buddy that points out the Red Coins' locations is found on one of the wooden platforms next to the newly risen ship. Four of the Red Coins are found inside clam shells: one near the player's starting area, one just beyond the first clam shell, one next to the crag with the Bob-omb Buddy that sets up the cannon, and one at the bottom of the bay. One Red Coin is on top of a stone spire next to the Bob-omb Buddy that activates the cannon, and the player can climb that spire. The remaining three Red Coins are on the titular ship, which can be reached by using platforms that temporarily appear once a nearby Purple Switch is pressed. The ship rocks back and forth on the water, and a crate that moves with the ship can damage the player if it comes into contact with them. Once all eight Red Coins have been collected, a Power Star appears at the ship's stern.

Walkthrough
The Coins in the Clams
The first four Red Coins you will find underwater, hidden in the mouths of the clams that rest on the bottom of the lake. Wait for them to open up, and you will have plenty of time to swoop in to grab the coins they hold. There are three clams with Red Coins in the shallow part of the water.
Out of the Water
The fifth Red Coin can be found at the top of one of the slender spires sticking out of the water. Return to the beach at the start of the level. From there, head right and swim toward the platform with the Bob-omb Buddy on the right side of the cavern. Jump to his level and jump onto the spire that is right next to the platform. Climb to the top to reach the Red Coin.
The Coins on the Ship
The remaining three Red Coins are sitting on the deck of the floating ship. To reach the deck of the ship, swim over to the small stretch of sand on the right side of the cave - it is just past the floating wooden platform near the Bob-omb Buddy. In the corner of this little sandbar is a column of coins. Walk over to them and backflip onto the stone platform. Trigger the big button on the ground to activate the connections between the thin planks and go across them. When the bow of the ship drops with the flow of the water, jump onto the ship's deck and collect the last three coins.
To reach the final two Red Coins, get to the roof at the back of the ship. You can reach them a couple of different ways. Wait for the sliding crate to be nearby and use it to jump off and reach the roof. Or, jump onto the elevated edge of the ship’s side and jump from there to reach the roof. Jump to grab the final two coins. Get the Power Star that appears at the stern to complete the level.
5. Blast to the Stone Pillar, Jolly Roger Bay
Layout
The Power Star is located on a ledge on the other side of the bay from the player's starting position. Next to the platform is a group of stalagmites that can be grabbed on to, with one of them holding a 1-UP Mushroom at its tip. The lower half of the spires cannot be climbed; if the player slides down the spire while holding on to the upper half, they quickly fall off. The level's cannon, which is unlocked by a Bob-omb Buddy on a low platform to the right of where the player starts, must be used in order to reach the Power Star. The player must launch themselves with the cannon to one of the stalagmites and then jump to the platform. In Super Mario 64 DS, Mario can alternatively use his floating power to get to the platform, while Luigi can backward-somersault from the ship to reach the platform.

Walkthrough
From the starting beach, jump into the water and swim toward the right side of the cavern. Swim past the slender spire sticking out of the water, and jump onto the floating wood platform just ahead. From there, turn around and jump onto the stone platform next to you. Talk to the Bob-omb Buddy, and he will ready the cannon in the area.
Swim back toward the beach to find the stone pedestal with the cannon hole on top. Drop into the cannon and aim to the right slightly. you will see three slender spires sticking up out of the water. Aim at the leftmost spire and slightly tilt your aim above it. Fire away flying through the air, grabbing onto the spire as you collide with it. There is a yellow !-Block floating a platform on the left side of the wall. Climb to the very tip of the spire to cause Mario to do a handstand at the top. Turn so that Mario’s head is looking in the direction of the platform, and jump to backflip off the spire and land on the platform. Hit the yellow !-Block to get the Power Star.
6. Through the Jet Stream, Jolly Roger Bay
Layout
The Power Star is found at the bottom of a jet stream, which is located at the bottom of the bay. The stream is covered by a grate, which lets the pressure pass through but prevents the player from entering. In Super Mario 64, Mario can obtain the Power Star only if he becomes Metal Mario. There are three Metal Caps in the level: one on the shore where the player starts, one on a platform close to the ship, and one inside the cave where Treasure in the Ocean Cave takes place. As Metal Mario sinks to the bottom of the water, he is unaffected by the jet stream and can collect the Power Star.

Walkthrough
This one is simple, but you cannot get it until you have the Metal Cap unlocked from Hazy Maze Cave where a Metal Cap box waits. It is a simple jump in the water from there straight down to the star. Note the jet stream with a star at the bottom as you enter, you will have to come back here. Grab the Metal Cap and walk back out to where the big jet stream is. With the Metal Cap on, the stream will not push you to the surface. Walk over the grate and jump up to get the star. If time runs out and you lose the cap before reaching the star, there is an alternate metal cap box over where the red Bob-omb is.
For a challenge, it is possible to swim directly to the star without using the metal cap. it is a very big challenge, as the boat sits directly above the star, but you can use your shadow on the sea floor to line yourself up. Start above the jet stream and tap the A button at the correct pace to swim faster. Swim straight down into the jet stream to get the star. Note: if you do not swim straight down, the jet stream will push Mario aside.
At the bottom of the pool is a jet stream with a series of rings flowing upward from it. Swim through five of the rings in order to make the Power Star appear. Go through the rings normally, just by swimming straight down into the jet stream.
The force of the jet stream prevents you from reaching the start itself. Swim over to the back wall and jump onto the platform that contains the green !-Block. Hit it to get the Metal Cap; then, sink to the bottom and walk over to the Power Star.
7. 100 Coins Star, Jolly Roger Bay
This is one of the more annoying 100-Coin Stars because the coins are spread across a large level and swimming is slow. Your main source of coins here will be the 8 Red Coins, the lines of coins on the docks leading up to the Pirate Ship, and the Blue Coin switch in the secret cave.
Beyond that, find the rings of coins around the stone spires near the canon, the ring of coins in the water outside the cave entrance, and kill as many Goombas as you can.
There are not very many coins in this level, so you need to really hunt around. It iss advised to do this on a star where the ship has been drained.
- At the start, turn left and hit the ! Block, and get three coins. Run over to the water and jump onto the pillar. Climb to the top and grab the red coin.
- Jump into the water and swim down to the bottom, where there is a rock with 8 coins around it.
- Get the three red coins from the seashells for a total of 6 coins.
- Near the highest seashell is a small beach. There are five yellow coins in a column.
- Hit the ! Switch and carefully walk on the bridges to get 15 coins.
- Jump onto the boat and get the three red coins for 6 more coins.
- Jump off the boat towards the three pillars. Around one of the pillars are 8 coins.
- Swim all the way down to the bottom of the lake, and get the red coin from the seashell.
- Swim to the tunnel, and get 8 coins just around the tunnel.
- Head to the underground cave. There is a blue coin switch, and you can get 30 coins out of it. You must get every blue coin from this switch or there will not be enough coins left to get 100 coins.
- You can get 3 coins from the goombas.
- Run to the treasure chests, but head right just before that. You can get 8 coins in a ring, and get your star.
Trivia
- There is a similar course with water and same music: Dire, Dire Docks.
- In the original Japanese version, Jolly Roger Bay's painting instead consists of bubbles with a blue frame, while in the overseas, the Super Mario 64: Shindō Pak Taiō release, and Super Mario 3D All-Stars port, the painting shows the sunken ship with a yellow frame. In Super Mario 64 DS, the painting depicts bubbles like the original Japanese version.
- During the first visit of Jolly Roger Bay, the sky is shown to be very dark and stormy-like and mist can be seen above the ground. After collecting the Star in the Sunken Ship, the sky brightens up and the mist disappears. Unlike nearly everything else in the game. If you return to the mission, the stormy sky as well as the fog will no longer be there. In the remake, the sky stays gray and stormy-like permanently but no fog is ever present.
1-Up Mushroom Locations
- Swim through the ring of coins near the eel that leads to the cavern.
- On top of a pillar near one of the stars. You must shoot to it using the cannon.
