Star Wars: Rogue Squadron - Chapter II

Chapter II: Rogue Squadron

Kasan Moor, Imperial Ace and leader of the dreaded 128th TIE Interceptor Squadron has now defected to the Rebel Alliance.

As a loyal soldier for the Empire, Moor witnessed both its cruelty and hypocrisy in the destruction of her home world, Alderaan.

Convinced to join Rogue Squadron, Moor offers her flight expertise in addition to knowledge of hidden Imperial strongholds...

A battle at the Jade Moon took place during the Galactic Civil War, immediately after the liberation of Gerrard V. The battle was a raid led by former Imperial starfighter pilot Kasan Moor following her defection to the Rebel Alliance. The Jade Moon of Loronar was being used as a supply depot for the Galactic Empire and featured a factory of AT-AT walkers and blaster rifles. The attack was twofold: a ground attack with backup from Rogue Squadron. With the operation a success for the Alliance, the attention turned to other military installations that Kasan Moor had reported.

Prelude

During the liberation of Gerrard V, the leader of the 128th TIE Interceptor Squadron, Kasan Moor, surrendered herself after her TIE/IN interceptor was disabled by Gold Leader Crix Madine. She donated her interceptor to the Rebel cause and supplied the Rebellion with a number of Imperial installation locations. One such installation was on the Jade Moon. The location of a military supply depot, it was an essential factory for AT-ATs and E-11 blaster rifles. Rogue Squadron gathered its members and set to the supply moon.

The battle

A team of Rebel SpecForce commandos arrived at the moon using a Lambda-class T-4a shuttle. Touching down, they infiltrated the moon and set off toward the supply base, but were immediately intercepted by AT-PT walkers. Rogue Squadron flew down and took out the walker attackers, allowing the convoy of combat vehicles to proceed. Upon the arrival at the depot, a ray shield was activated, preventing attack.

Luke Skywalker and Rogue Squadron scouted out the trenches covering the moon for the shield generator. Upon discovering it, Luke fired a volley of Proton torpedoes into the hull, allowing attack on the depot. With the shield deactivated, commandos deployed from the trains and infiltrated the facility. Rogue Squadron covered from the air, taking out TIE/sa bombers and bombarding the surface. The outlying facility was left in rubble, and the commandos finished the job of sabotaging and looting the depot

Aftermath

The operation was deemed a success by the Alliance. The success proved the trustworthiness of Kasan Moor and the information she provided. Kasan commented on how strange it felt to attack the Empire, after taking their orders for so long. Luke assured her that he was glad she joined the Rebellion, telling her that she was fighting for her own ideals now. Kasan was not entirely convinced however. Soon after the battle, Rogue Squadron launched an attack on the facility on Balmorra with the information supplied to them by Moor.

Strategy Guide

Ignore the Shuttle in front of you, as it is deploying your assault team. Follow your radar straight ahead, and take out the 4 AT-PT's in your path. As you approach the shielded Imperial Base, take out the 4 Turbolasers that surround it, as well as any ground targets in your path.

Once that is done, turn around and head back to where you started. Keep an eye out on your right for a trench which you can see on your radar distinctly. Head down the trench, keeping low as instructed. Take out the single Turbolaser that sits at a Y in the trench, then make a left.

Follow it down until you find a large building, but do not rush in; first take out the Missile Turret around the corner on the right. Once that is done, torpedo the building and pick up the mission's Bonus, Advanced Shielding. Take out the Missile Turret above and return to the trench, going back to the Y in the trench, where you now turn left.

Follow the trench to the Shield Generator, firing your blasters as you do, then turn left to find another Turbolaser and an AT-PT. Take them out, as well as any ground targets, then turn and take out the Shield Generator.

Once the following animation sequence plays, follow your radar straight back to the Imperial Base, taking out any Missile Turrets along the way. you will find the shield down and your assault team under attack from AT-PT's and TIEs. First take out the AT-PT's, as they are bombarding your team with blaster fire. Then take out any TIE Bombers, followed by any remaining TIEs. Once all Imperial air cover is cleared, the mission is complete.

Tips

Taking out additional ground targets such as buildings, Turbolasers and Missile Turrets helps increase your enemies destroyed to achieve the 45 necessary for your Gold Medal.

2. Imperial Construction Yards, Chapter II

Here, players must traverse stealth and a difficult sneak attack to succeed in this mission.

Briefing

This mission sends you over the facilities of Balmorra, a factory planet that builds advanced weapons of destruction for the Imperial forces. Located at the Outer Edge of the Galactic Core in the Balmorra system, Balmorra's plains are marked with numerous canyons and mountains and, of course, industrial buildings. Although occupied by the Empire, the inhabitants of Balmorra long for independence and free markets for their renowned weapons technology.

Description

kasan moor's information has once again provided the location of a hidden enemy base, responsible for the production of imperial walkers. Watch out for the ground scanners.

Mission Objectives
  1. Approach the Base Undetected
  2. Locate and Destroy the AT-ST Factory
  3. Locate and Destroy the AT-AT Factory
Requirements for Gold
  1. Completion Time: 6:30

Advanced Bombs

This raid on Imperial territory on Balmorra by Rogue Squadron took place around 1 ABY. The attack was aimed towards two factories manufacturing walkers.

Prelude

The raid on Balmorra by Rebel forces was another in a line of swift hit-and-run operations engineered by Lieutenant Kasan Moor, a Rebel sympathizer who defected from the Galactic Empire. Using her knowledge, Rogue Squadron led a successful string of victories against the Empire. Her knowledge of the Balmorra construction yard's layout and security systems allowed Rogue Squadron, led by Luke Skywalker, to get into the facility undetected.

The Battle

Being a surprise attack, the battle was unorganized for the Galactic Empire. Rogue Squadron raced through a trench in Balmorra to surprise attack the facility, while destroying a set of scanning post dishes, blinding their presence from being spotted. As soon as they reach the end, they enter the main yard where the factories are and started their mayhem. TIE Fighters were destroyed before they could take off, and Lambda-class shuttles were shot down during lift-off. The Empire couldn't launch a strong defense force. By the end of the raid, the Empire had lost an AT-AT factory and an AT-ST factory. As the battle was designed to be swift and cheap, and only three fighters were used, the flight quickly pulled out after destroying the two factories.

During the bombardment, Rogue Squadron targeted a domed building near a TIE landing platform, and proceeded to retrieve Advanced bombs for later use.

Aftermath

Rogue Squadron managed to pull off this stealth mission while destroying the factories and many of the forces as they attacked. To their amazement, they consider it a bliss that for once they attack an Imperial facility which it is usually the opposite of what the empire does. With Kasan Moor's help, they will continue to plan more assaults towards other empire locations, leading towards the assault on Kile II.

Behind the scenes

Raid on Balmorra or Imperial construction yards is the seventh level of the Nintendo 64 and PC game Star Wars: Rogue Squadron. The level is designed as a stealth mission which is shown by the idle movement of walkers and TIE fighters not pursuing Rogue Squadron. Additionally, there will be a mission failure if the player doesn't destroy the scanning posts before reaching their scanning area.

There are two active AT-AT walkers present during the battle, that can be brought down by the Airspeeders' tow cables. However, since this mission takes place before the Battle of Hoth, where Luke Skywalker developed the strategy, along with the fact that the mission can be completed without bringing them down, it is likely that this aspect is non-canon.

Strategy Guide

Fly down the canyon and take out the first 3 Radar Dishes, being careful about getting too close. After the third, there is an island formation with another dish behind it at which point you can go left or right. Go right and let your wingmen take care of it, while you take out the 2 remaining dishes.

>Turn right and you will find an AT-AT with a landing platform behind it. Take out the nearby Turbolaser and as many ground targets as time permits. Leave the platform and keep right, where you will find another landing platform where an Imperial Shuttle is about to take off. A few choice shots will take out the Shuttle, then eliminate the Turbolaser on the ridge above. While taking out ground targets here, keep an eye out for a round container in the corner; here you will find the next Bonus, Advanced Bombs.

Once you are satisfied, head out and keep right. Take out the approaching AT-ST, being careful of the Turbolaser behind it. You've now found the AT-ST construction facility. Try to take out the Missile Turret first, then the Turbolaser, then worry about the remaining AT-ST and the factory. To destroy the factories in this level, it is only necessary to destroy the large buildings, not the machines themselves.

Once cleared, head out towards the walker you saw earlier, and to the platform behind it. you will find the squadron of TIE Fighters has now returned, and are sitting on the platform. Blast away at as many as you can, then turn and fly in the direction the AT-AT is going.

Straight ahead you will find a canyon, the same one that would be immediately to your right when you flew out of the initial canyon with the Radar Dishes. Stay high and to the left, because there's a ledge you can fly along that will provide some cover. you will need cover, because ahead you will find an AT-AT, two Turbolasers and two Missile Turrets. Try to fly ahead and avoid the Turbolasers, and focus on the Turrets. Once they're gone, attack the AT-AT construction facility you just found, trying to take out ground targets and machinery first, then the larger buildings. If you need to circle around, be careful of the Turbolasers you passed earlier, and destroy them if necessary. Once the last building is destroyed, your mission is complete.

Tips

You only have 6:30 to get a Gold Medal on this mission, but you also need 80 enemies destroyed, which means you have to take out many targets as you can in a short amount of time. You also need to worry about achieving 45% accuracy, so try not to be blasting all the time. Be careful of the 2 groups of 3 TIE Fighters that are flying about too, as they will blast you if they see you. do not bother taking out the AT-AT's with your tow cable, as it is not worth the time to take out only 1 enemy.

3. Assault on Kile II, Chapter II

The pilot is introduced to the Y-wing, giving more diversity for the player to enjoy.

Briefing

On this planet, you will be attacking the Imperial Enclave, an enormous facility that supports the Empire's naval operations in that sector of the galaxy. The surface of Kile II is marked by canyons and large, enclosed areas, where you will find the Imperial spaceport, a long-range sensor post, and troop barracks. Towards the end of the mission, Rogue Squadron's second-in-command, Wedge Antilles is shot down and captured by the Imperials.

Description

The deep canyons of Kile II hide the imperial enclave, a sprawling facility supporting the empire's navy throughout this sector. Destroy key elements and help break the empire's hold on the local planets.

Mission Objectives
  1. Locate and destroy the sensor array
  2. Locate and destroy the Imperial Spaceport
  3. Locate and destroy the Imperial garrisons
Requirements for Gold

Star Wars: Rogue Squadron 3. Assault on Kile II.The Assault on Kile II was a battle during the Galactic Civil War, in 1 ABY. The battle, an attack on the Imperial Enclave on Kile II by Rogue Squadron, was another operation engineered by Kasan Moor, a former Imperial pilot who defected to the Rebellion during the Liberation of Gerrard V. The pilots of Rogue Squadron, led by Commander Luke Skywalker, the famous pilot who destroyed the Empire's Death Star I, flew Y-wing starfighters outfitted with twenty proton bombs each. The bombing runs were aimed towards three major sectors of the Empire's base: a spaceport city, stormtrooper barracks, and a sensor array.

The Empire suffered heavy casualties during the assault, and their influence over the local sector was diminished. Only two rebel pilots were gunned down. The fleeing Imperial forces captured one of the downed pilots, Wedge Antilles, and brought him in tow off the planet, shipping him to the Imperial prison colonies on Kessel. As Antilles was considered to be one of the squadron's most valuable pilots, and a close friend of Commander Skywalker, an attack on Kessel was later launched, aimed at freeing Antilles and other prisoners of war.

Prelude

Following the Battle of Corellia, during which a high ranking Imperial officer, Crix Madine, defected to the Alliance to Restore the Republic, the Alliance engineered an operation to break Gerrard V from the Empire's control. During the course of the battle, an Imperial pilot named Kasan Moor surrendered herself to the pilots of the Alliance's Gold Squadron. Following the battle, Moor supplied the Alliance with a wealth of information regarding the Empire's bases of operation, paving the way for guerrilla attacks on the Jade Moon and Balmorra.

The success of these attacks led Madine to authorize a large scale attack on the Imperial Enclave on Kile II. The Alliance's efforts were directed towards a large spaceport city on the planet, which was also home to a large sensor array and a number of stormtrooper barracks. Madine deployed Rogue Squadron, led by Luke Skywalker, who armed themselves with BTL Y-wing starfighters equipped with proton bombs.

The assault

Kile Sensor Array on 3. Assault on Kile II from Star Wars: Rogue Squadron - Chapter II.Rogue Squadron entered the Imperial enclave from a nearby canyon, where the Imperials were enlightened to their presence. They ambushed the Rebel attackers with swarms of TIE/LN starfighters when the Rogues came to a fork in the canyon's path, causing the squadron to scramble. The pilots of the slow moving Y-wings managed to overcome their shortcomings and outmaneuvered the Imperial ambush, laying waste to the Imperial spaceport, troop barracks, and sensor array.

During the battle, a sudden wave of Imperial reinforcements caught Rogue wingmates Wedge Antilles and Rogue Seven off guard, leading to both of their Y-wings being gunned down, as well as an unidentified third Y-wing flying behind them. Antilles managed to crash-land safely and was promptly taken into custody by Imperial forces, who retreated soon after with him in haul. In the end, the Imperials suffered at least 65 casualties.

Aftermath

The Alliance's operation effectively hindered Imperial activity in the sector, and proved to be another successful operation organized under the guidance of Kasan Moor. Following the battle, Commander Skywalker opted to organize an operation aimed at freeing fellow pilot and best friend Wedge Antilles from Imperial custody on Kessel.

Behind the scenes

Rogue Squadron's attack on the Kile II spaceport was depicted in the "Assault on Kile II," the eight level of the Nintendo 64 and PC game Star Wars: Rogue Squadron. The player takes on the role of Luke Skywalker during the mission. To get a gold medal on the level—the highest ranking a player can achieve —one must ensure that all friendly units are kept safe (though Rogue Seven and Wedge Antilles are scripted to go down), the mission is completed under six minutes, and that at least sixty five enemies are destroyed.

While the canonical order in which the three different sectors of the Imperial base were destroyed is unknown, if the player opted to attack the troop garrisons and the sensor array before the spaceport, an Imperial Lambda-class T-4a shuttle descends into the canyon to survey the damage before flying through the canyon into the airport, acting as something of a guide for players who are easily lost in the network of canyons.

It is never specified who flew under the callsign "Rogue Seven" during the battle. Imperial defector Kasan Moor is the one who usually takes up the mantle, though it is implied that Rogue Seven was killed by Imperial forces prior to Wedge being shot down. A third Y-wing is seen being shot down in the beginning of the cutscene.

Strategy Guide

Once you fly down the initial canyon and it curves to the right, keep right. you will come across a small cluster of buildings accompanied by 3 turbolasers. Take out what you can and continue on, keeping right. Proceed down a narrow canyon, taking out 2 Turbolasers on the way, and you will come out into a large opening. You've found the Imperial Spaceport.

Turn right and take out the Missile Turrets and Turbolasers first, which generally encircle the Spaceport. Then start bombing the spaceport itself. Watch out for TIE Interceptors and Imperial Shuttles, which will constantly blast at you for as long as you are in the area. If you get a Shuttle in your sights, blast it, and it and any other Shuttles will leave the area.

Once you are finished, exit the Spaceport down the same narrow canyon from which you entered it. When you reach a break in the canyon, turn right and stay right, taking out the Missile Turret along the way. you will come out into another large opening. Now you've found the Sensor Array and the Imperial Garrisons.

The Garrisons are closest, so bomb the 2 buildings and 2 Turbolasers first. Then move out to the Sensor array, a large building surrounded by 5 Radar Dishes and plenty of Turbolasers and Missile Turrets. Take out the enemy fire first, again being careful of attacking TIE Interceptors. Then take out the Radar Dishes and main building.

When you see the animation sequence where Wedge gets shot down, you know you only have a couple of targets left to destroy. Once they are all destroyed, your mission is complete.

Tips

To get your Gold Medal, you have 6 minutes to destroy 65 targets with 60% accuracy, so try to place your bombs between 2 close targets where possible, keeping in mind your supply of a mere 20. Try to take out Missile Turrets and Turbolasers with your blasters, saving bombs for the largest buildings. do not waste time trying to tackle the TIE Interceptors, as the Y-Wing is much too slow and time is of the essence.

4. Rescue on Kessel, Chapter II

The first of two levels taking place on Kessel, this mission tests the player's ability to use the secondary weapon: the ion cannon.

Briefing

This mission takes you to the reddish, potato-shaped planet of Kessel, where the Empire has a notorious prison facility. Kessel's surface is covered with salt flats and pockmarked by deep craters and mines. The thin atmosphere of this inhospitable planet is barely breathable, so special factories have been built to generate oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide.

Description

You must find wedge before the imperials deliver him to the prison facilities - and certain death!

Mission Objectives
  1. Rescue Wedge
  2. Locate and disable the train
Requirements for Gold

X-Wing

The Rescue on Kessel was an operation that took place around 1 ABY. During the Rebellion's assault on Kile II, Wedge Antilles's Y-wing starfighter had been disabled by Imperial forces. Antilles was smuggled into an evacuation shuttle and shipped to the prisons of Kessel. Rogue Squadron commander Luke Skywalker led a raid on the prisons using modified X-wing starfighters, equipped with ion cannons. He and Rogue Squadron disabled the Armored hovertrain carrying Wedge using their ion cannons.

Soon after the rescue of Antilles, Rogue group returned with a commando team commanded by General Crix Madine and freed the remaining prisoners using Wedge's knowledge of the prison. They disabled the shield generator protecting the prison centers, evacuated the Rebel prisoners, and proceeded to rendezvous with the Rebel fleet.

Prelude

Following the defection of Kasan Moor, the Imperial commander of the 128th TIE Interceptor Squadron, to the Alliance to Restore the Republic, the Alliance used her knowledge of Imperial bases and operations to their advantage, and won a string of battles striking against Imperial installations. During an assault on the Imperial spaceport in the canyons of Kile II, Wedge Antilles, of the elite Alliance starfighter unit Rogue Squadron, was shot down by Imperial forces, and was taken as a prisoner of war. Antilles was scheduled to be transferred to the prisons on the spice planet Kessel. Rogue Squadron, under the command of Luke Skywalker, refused to let this happen, and a rescue operation was initiated to safely extract Antilles from the hovertrain transferring him and other prisoners to the main prison facility.

The rescue

Rescue of Wedge Antilles

Using modified X-wing starfighters equipped with ion cannons, which shuts down the electric systems of whatever it impacts, Rogue Squadron deployed to disable the hovertrain carrying Wedge Antilles and other prisoners. The Imperials attempted to use a secondary convoy to mislead Rogue group's on-board lifesign scanners.

Kasan Moor, Rogue group member and a former Imperial pilot, recognized this tactic and persuaded Rogue group to ignore it. Skywalker destroyed the convoy before moving onto the hover train carrying the prisoners. Zev Senesca's long range scan confirmed Antilles to be on the train, and a barrage of ion cannon fire caused the train's systems to shut down, allowing Antilles and the train's passengers safe passage to escape.

Extraction of other prisoners

Based on advice given to him by Antilles, General Crix Madine organized an operation to free other Rebel prisoners of war held on the planet. The prison camp Antilles was to be taken to, situated in a series of canyons, had three main facilities protected by a main DSS-02 shield generator, turbolasers, and a missile turret. The battle plan called for Rogue Squadron to knock out the main power generator, allowing Madine to deploy his commandos via a landing craft into the prison facilities and free the prisoners. Skywalker and the Rogues protected the transport while it traveled to each of the three facilities and disembarked the Rebel commandos to free the prisoners. While liberating the second facility, Rogue Squadron, after making sure any threats to the escape transport were neutralized, proceeded to destroy a bunker nearby, retrieving advanced seeker missiles in the process.

Behind the scenes

The Rescue on Kessel appears in two consecutive missions in the 1998 video game Star Wars: Rogue Squadron. It was also mentioned in the game's strategy guide, Star Wars: The Official Starships & Vehicles Collection 12, and Wedge Antilles' entry in The New Essential Guide to Characters.

During the first mission, there is a secondary convoy which the player may ignore or destroy. This article assumes the Rogues skipped it and went to the hovertrain.

It takes 129 enemy forces destroyed to win a gold medal. The player can optionally retrieve the advanced seeker missile tech upgrade. The guide likewise suggests doing so in order to ensure a Gold Medal win. This article assumes the player did so. The guide suggests the V-wing airspeeder would be necessary to win a gold medal in the mission. However, the article assumes the player did not use a V-wing due to it not being developed yet at the time of the mission.

Strategy Guide

At the beginning of the mission you must choose to either pursue the convoy or the Hover Train; immediately go left and go after the convoy. Wedge isn't there, but you need to destroy the 3-car convoy, and the nearby Turbolaser, Missile Turret, and container to achieve your required 26 enemies destroyed for the Gold Medal.

Once those are eliminated, head for the train, and take out any AT-ST's, Turbolasers, and Missile Turrets that surround the train's "guides." If you get the train in your sights, try to take out the 3 cars that are armed with your Ion Cannons, but do not disable the whole train yet. There are a slew of enemies between the train and the prison. If you hear a TIE Interceptor flying about, destroy it.

Follow the train's path to the prison itself, where it is guarded by only 2 Turbolasers. Take these out, then return your attention to the train and disable the remaining cars. Once the entire train is disabled, your mission is complete.

Tips

You need 26 enemies destroyed for your Gold Medal, which means you must destroy every enemy in the mission. You must act fast, because if the train reaches the prison, your mission has failed. Also remember not to blast the train, because at least 5 of the 6 cars must be disabled intact to get the Gold Medal.

5. Prisons of Kessel, Chapter II

The second of two levels taking place on Kessel, this mission tests the player's ability for protection missions and dogfighting.

Briefing

In this mission, you will once again fly over Kessel, the only planet where glitterstim spice is produced. This valuable substance is prized for giving telepathic abilities to anyone who consumes it, although users can become addicted to it. Before joining the Rebel forces, Han Solo used to smuggle glitterstim spice from Kessel. The Empire uses forced labor to mine this spice, and guards it heavily.

Description

Now that Wedge is safe, help General madine free other rebels from the notorious prisons of kessel.

Mission Objectives
  1. Protect and escort Madine's shuttle
  2. Destroy the power generator
Requirements for Gold
  1. Completion Time: 10:30
  2. Enemies Destroyed: 103
  3. Accuracy: 40%
  4. Friendly Saves: 35
  5. Bonus Collected: 1 (Advanced Seeker Missiles)
Default Craft

Strategy Guide

Once the mission starts, steer right, then left. When you spot 3 Probe Droids, take them and the 2 accompanying AT-ST's out, then follow General Rieekan's Shuttle to the first prison. Take out the 4 Turbolasers, but do not destroy the large rectangular containers until that rescue is complete; you will need to take out the Stormtroopers that emerged when the rescue started.

Destroy any TIE Fighters or TIE Interceptors immediately, as they will all be gunning for the Shuttle. Once you see the animation sequence about the Shield Generator, do not waste a lot of time before following your radar to it and destroying it, as you only have 10 minutes to complete the mission. If you take it out right away, you won't have to worry about your time. Try to take out any Turbolasers at other prisons you might see along the way, but do not deviate off your course to the Generator.

Hurry back to the first prison and the Shuttle, because you can be sure more TIEs have shown up. Once the Shuttle is clear, follow it to the second prison, and again clear away any Turbolasers, TIEs or ground targets, including the Stormtroopers that are scuttling around below. Look around the surrounding hills for a small nook, where you will see a Missile Turret and a container. Destroy the Turret and then the container, inside which you will find your next Bonus, Seeker Missiles.

Once that rescue is complete proceed to the third prison with the Shuttle, and again destroy any TIEs and other targets. Then repeat when you reach the fourth and final prison. Once the last rescue is complete, the Shuttle will leave and your mission is complete.

Tips

To get your Gold Medal, you need a whopping 103 enemies destroyed, which means you will have to get a lot of Stormtroopers on the ground. that is why it is key to leave the containers until the rescues have started and they have emerged from their barracks. Also, avoid following TIEs away from whatever prison the Shuttle is at; focus on the ones that stay in the area, because they will be blasting the Shuttle every chance they get.
