Vine Valley - Walkthrough

Donkey Kong Country #21

Vine Valley

Vine Valley is the third world of the Donkey Kong Island in the game Donkey Kong Country. The area is a vast pine tree forest that includes a small treehouse village and a bridge leading to a small jungle and a temple. The temple is located at a large bay connected to the sea. In the Super Family Computer/Super Nintendo Entertainment System and Game Boy Color versions of the game, the time of day seems to be around dusk due to the setting sun in the background. Queen B. is the boss of Vine Valley.

1. Vulture Culture, Vine Valley

Donkey Kong Country Vine Valley - 1. Vulture Culture Map.

This is the first stage of Vine Valley, and is also the first forest stage of the game. The flying variants of Neckies must be used as stepping platforms for the Kongs to bounce on and jump over pits. And the variants of these vulture enemies found on the ground throw coconuts around trying to harm the primates. Mini-Neckies make their debut appearance in this stage in the Super Family Computer/Super Nintendo Entertainment System and Game Boy Advance versions. They are small vulture enemies capable of spitting nuts forward from their mouths, and some of them can move up and down, being dangerous small targets. Progress over pits is usually made by using moving Barrel Cannons. And some Zingers are also found in the same stage.

Overview

When the Kongs begin the level, they find themselves in front of a barrel that sits next to a small ledge with a Mini-Necky and some bananas on it. An abyss follows the bird enemy, but the primates can cross it if they use the aid of a Barrel Cannon and a Necky hovering over it. The Barrel Cannon is able to blast them into the Necky, causing them to bounce off of the foe and land on a solid area of ground with a DK Barrel. The Kongs can find another pit ahead of here that contains a Blast Barrel, a Barrel Cannon, and then a Necky. The Blast Barrel can shoot them to the Barrel Cannon, which can then blast them into the Necky, causing them to bounce onto the area of land ahead. This area features a raised piece of land in the center of it. A tire sits on top of the land with a Necky standing on top of it. The enemy throws nuts in the area below it. The primates can discover another wide abyss ahead, which holds a Blast Barrel, a Barrel Cannon, and a Necky.

These obstacles are set up in a similar way to the ones in the previous pit. Once the Kongs cross the abyss, they reach an area of land composed of several stair-like structures. A barrel sits at the top of the large platform, and a Mini-Necky flies at the end of it, where another abyss can be found. It contains a Barrel Cannon that is able to shoot them towards two Neckys. They can bounce off of the Neckys to safely land on another solid platform with a Mini-Necky on it. Another pit follows this area, and it also contains a Barrel Cannon that can blast the primates to a pair of Neckys. They can bounce on the foes to access a solid area of ground that holds a Mini-Necky. In a wide abyss located ahead of here, the primates can find a Barrel Cannon that can blast them to a Necky moving in a circular path. After bouncing on the vulture, they can reach another cannon that is able to shoot them towards several Neckys. With the ability to bounce on the foes, the primates are able to reach a strong structure that they must walk down to progress. A Barrel Cannon floats in a wider abyss nearby, and the level's Continue Barrel hovers right above it.

The Kongs can shoot over the remaining part of the abyss with this Barrel Cannon. On the other side of the pit, they can find two tall pieces of land with Neckys on them. The enemies throw nuts off of the edge of the platforms, trying to hit the heroes with them. If the Kongs manage to pass the two Neckys, they reach a wide pit that must be crossed with the use of two Barrel Cannons. These barrels tilt towards each other, so the primates must blast whenever the barrels are aimed in the correct direction. After blasting over this pit, the duo reaches a large platform carrying a Mini-Necky. It is followed by two small pits. The letter O stands on a platform after the first pit. The second pit is wider than the previous, and the Kongs must rely on a Barrel Cannon and two Neckys to cross it. They must shoot to the two foes with the Barrel Cannon, and then bounce off of them to reach a solid area holding a barrel and a pair of Mini-Neckys stacked on top of each other. In a large pit located ahead of here, Donkey and Diddy Kong can find a Barrel Cannon that must be used to blast towards a Necky that orbits a Zinger. After bouncing off of this foe to cross the pit, the two friends land on a slightly slanted pathway with another abyss following it.

Three barrels that tilt when entered are located in it, and they Kongs must shoot when they are aimed correctly to survive. They must also watch out for a Zinger as they blast between the last two barrels. Once they cross the abyss, they come up to a long pathway with a structure raised in the center of it. A Necky is perched at the top of the structure, and it throws nuts at the heroes as they pass through the area. After passing the vulture, they reach an abyss that contains two Barrel Cannons that tilt upon being entered. As before, they must shoot only when the barrel they are in is aimed correctly. A solid platform with a few bananas along it follows this pit. A small pit is ahead of it that can be crossed with a simple jump. The primates can find a Mini-Necky on a small platform after this pit. It hovers near a sign that indicates that the level is near complete. Using several Barrel Cannons that tilt when entered, the Kongs are able to blast over a nearby abyss. As they cross, a few Zingers fly in their path. They also find the letter G between two Zingers as they cross. On the opposite side of the abyss, the primates can find a pathway holding a Mini-Necky, a few bananas, and an exit sign. A passage leading out of the level follows the sign.

Walkthrough

pick up the nearby barrel, then toss it at the Mini-Necky enemy on the platform above. After that, jump into the barrel above the cliff, then blast yourself to the Necky, then use it to get onto the next platform, where you need to go. After getting on the platform, keep going and use the barrels you come across to blast yourself to the other side (you have to use the Necky here too, in order to reach the other side, just like you did previously).

When you reach the other side, knock the Necky that is throwing nuts at you off the above platform, then use the tire to bounce off onto the white patch of land on the ground below to you reveal the "K." Grab the "K" and continue on. It should be straight-foward enough and obvious enough what you have to do to progress, so I won't go into detail about that now. Eventually, you will reach a barrel that you can throw down a slope to eliminate a Mini-Necky by the cliff.

After doing that, use the barrels to blast off the two Necky's, and onto the other side. At the other side, defeat the Mini-Necky, then use the barrels that you come to blast yourself through the Necky's to get to the other side. Do try and break the white patch of grass on the ground after emerging from the barrels, since you will get a barrel to open up a bonus by smashing the wall to the left.

I know I said I wouldn't include bonuses in the walkthrough, but oh well, I contradicted myself. After breaking the white patch of grass, keep going through the level, blasting your way through the four Necky's you come across to reach the other side, where the Star Barrel awaits. Break it and continue on. When you encounter two Necky enemies throwing nuts at you, quickly run through them once there is a break in their throwing, and continue on.

Eventually, you will reach the "O," so take it and continue on to reach some more barrels, which you will have to use to blast the Necky's out of their way, and use them to get to the other side. Once at the other side, grab the barrel that's nearby and roll it to the area below, being sure to follow it to defeat the two Mini-Necky enemies spitting nuts at you. After doing that, keep going, being sure to blast your way from barrel to barrel to reach different areas of the level.

you will encounter a Zinger in one of your barrel blasting frenzies, so be sure to blast when the Zinger isn't near you. Anyway, keep going after that Zinger segment, you will see a Necky throwing nuts at you from a high platform. defeat it, then jump down onto the white patch of grass below to reveal a barrel. Use that barrel to break a hole in the wall on the slightly lower platform below where the Necky was. Go through that hole into a bonus.

In that bonus, you can collect the "N," which is the only reason I sent you into it. After collecting the "N" from the bonus, keep going through the level and when you reach a segment where you have to go from barrel to barrel (these barrels move from side to side, by the way) and avoid two Zinger enemies by the "G," you are near the end of the level. Get through that segment, doing your best to get the "G" while avoiding extermination by the Zingers.

When you reach the end of the level, take out the Mini-Necky, and continue to the exit.

Bonus Rooms

Spell it Out! When the Kongs find the first perched Necky, they must defeat it and push the tire to the left off the small ledge it was on. They must then push it right, to the edge of the cliff, and bounce from it there, following a trail of three visible bananas. If they bounce high enough, Donkey Kong and Diddy land into a Bonus Barrel. In the Bonus Level, the Kongs must jump at some letters orbiting the center of the stage to spell "KONG." They must avoid jumping at the Kritter heads (which both speed up the spinning and reverse the direction in which the letters rotate). If the Kongs spell the letters in the correct order, they are rewarded an Expresso Token. After winning or losing, the Kongs are sent back into the main level.

Bash the Baddies! Before the Continue Barrel, the Kongs cross an abyss while bouncing on several Neckys. After this, the Kongs go back on land. They must jump on a Mini-Necky and land on a patch on the ground to reveal a barrel. They must pick up the barrel and break away a wall to the left. The Kongs can walk into an opening to go into a Bonus Level (there is also a glitch in the original version where Donkey Kong can break open the wall simply by landing near it). In the Bonus Level, the Kongs must jump on two Klaptraps repeatedly until they are defeated after ten hits; each time either Klaptrap is hit, they release a Banana Bunch that initially represents one banana, but gives out more for each subsequent hit (except in the Game Boy Advance version, where they always give out 10 bananas). The Kongs are rewarded a Life Balloon for defeating both Klaptraps.

Find the Exit! Around the end of the level, the Kongs can discover a Necky perched on a high platform. The Kongs must jump off the platform and land on the ground below to release a barrel. They must pick up the barrel and use it to destroy a wall to the bottom-right of Necky. They must walk through the wall opening to enter the third and final Bonus Level. The Bonus Level is comparable to the first bonus of Barrel Cannon Canyon, because the Kongs must blast from several Barrel Cannons to get across a wide abyss. The Kongs can collect some bananas and the letter N between some Barrel Cannons along the way. At the end of the gap is a platform leading to the exit through an opening. Donkey Kong and Diddy can also exit by falling into the abyss below.

K-O-N-G Letters

The first Necky is perched on a platform and throws nuts at the Kongs. Donkey Kong and Diddy must jump onto a piece of ground to release the K.

The Kongs find the O on a small platform shortly after the level's Continue Barrel.

The N is between the last two Barrel Cannons in the third Bonus Level.

The G is between the final two Zingers, both of which are located over the final abyss.

2. Tree Top Town, Vine Valley

Donkey Kong Country Vine Valley - 2. Tree Top Town Map.

This second stage is the first treehouse village type in the game. It has many Barrel Cannons to traverse pits from treehouse to treehouse, requiring good timing when activating them. Taking place on a high place, many pits are present across the stage. it also contains leaping Kritters and Gnawties as enemies.

Overview

Mine Cart Carnage is the first Mine Cart stage having Donkey and Diddy Kong ride an unstoppable Mine Cart through a long series of track rails, most of which are torn apart, meaning the two have to jump alongside their vehicle to the other side. The stage is laid out for the Mine Cart to collect items at high risk of falling off the tracks. Also, several Mine Carts can be found derailed on the tracks as well, which causes a Kong to be harmed on contact. There are also a few Krashes, Kremling enemies also riding on Mine Carts towards the opposite direction of the primates. Any contact with them must be avoided at all costs.

Except for the Game Boy Color version of the game, a convenient shortcut involves the heroes jumping over the Autofire Barrel at the beginning of the stage, and falling to the left into a Warp Barrel. The barrel shoots them near the end of the stage, before the last Krash.

Layout

The Kongs begin the level by exiting a small hut and walking towards a bridge that a Gnawty walks along. As the Kongs walk through the area, a Necky flies over their heads. The primates soon travel to a Barrel Cannon placed on the edge of a platform composed of several planks. It can shoot them over a small abyss and optionally to a DK Barrel. On the other side of the abyss, the Kongs can find another wooden area that wraps around a tree trunk. A Gnawty drops onto it as they approach a large gap full of Barrel Cannons. Each of these Barrel Cannons, with the exception of the stationary Blast Barrel at the end the pit, move in a vertical path when entered, they the Kongs can shoot through each of them to cross the abyss, which is followed by another wooden platform that is structured around a tree trunk.

The platform is connected by another just like it by a bridge that some Gnawties march along. A wide abyss is ahead, and it contains many Barrel Cannons that, with the exception of the Blast Barrel at the end of the pit, move in a horizontal path when entered. The Kongs must blast among the many barrels in order to cross the abyss, which is followed by two sets of wooden platforms that surrounded tree trunks. The letter K hovers over a small pit between them, and a few Gnawties also walk along the second platform. They can discover another wide abyss near here with numerous Barrel Cannons in it. Aside from the Blast Barrel at the beginning of the pit, all of the Barrel Cannons move in diagonal paths, aiming the heroes one barrel to the next. Once they make their way over the abyss, they slam into the level's Continue Barrel.

A raised set of planks follow the Continue Barrel, and they support a lone barrel. After crossing a small pit ahead of here, the Kongs reach a pair of platforms that circle tree trunks. A Blast Barrel is placed between them, and if they enter it, they are blasted up into a Barrel Cannon that moves back ad forth in a horizontal path. The letter O is to the right of this barrel. A bridge holding a DK Barrel connects the platform to the right of the Blast Barrel to another platform composed of planks. The primates can find a wide abyss after it that consists of four Blast Barrels. They must jump in the first of the barrels with good timing, as it immediately blasts them to the next barrel, which moves in a vertical path up and down. The primates can land in the abyss if they do not shoot at it when it is positioned in front of the first Blast Barrel.

Donkey and Diddy Kong can find another platform made of planks ahead of here, and a Gnawty and another Blast Barrel are located on it. The Blast Barrels fires them above a wide abyss towards a few other barrels that they must use to shoot over the remaining part of the hazard. On the other side of the abyss, the Kongs can find a wooden platform that wraps around a tree trunk, which carries a lone Gnawty. Another wide pit is ahead of here, and the Kongs can only cross it with the help of a mixture of Blast Barrels and Barrel Cannons. As they cross, they must make sure to shoot into the Blast Barrels with good timing so they can blast them into the following barrel while it is positioned in the correct place. On the opposite side of the pit, the duo can discover two platforms composed of planks being connected by a long bridge that supports a multitude of hopping Kritters. A barrel also sits on the first of the platforms. An abyss can be found after the platforms that contains three Blast Barrels and a Barrel Cannon.

As they blast over the beginning of the pit, they must hop into the first Blast Barrel so that it blasts them into the next at a good time, due to the second Blast Barrel shooting them into a moving Barrel Cannon that they are able to miss. Another wooden platform that circles a tree trunk follows the abyss. The Kongs can find another pit immediately after it the contains many Barrel Cannons that move back in forth in vertical paths. After using them to cross a great deal of the pit, the heroes reach a Necky that flies above the remaining part of the pit. They are able to blast on top of it to cross the rest of the obstacle, which is followed by a wooden platform. The letter G hovers high above the platform, which holds a tire that can help them bounce to a higher set of planks. A sign can be found on the higher planks, and it indicates that the level is near complete. After the two friends jump over a small pit ahead of here, which contains a Zinger with an Expresso Token above it, they can find an exit sign that is followed by a small hut. The level is completed when they enter it.

Walkthrough

Defeat the Gnawty, then advance through the level. When you come across an area with several barrels floating above a cliff, time them right and blast your way across to the other side. At the other side, take out the Gnawties that come to attack you (rolling is the best way to dispose of them), then continue onward into another area of barrels floating above a cliff.

As you did previously, time it right when you go to blast into a new barrel. Blast your way from barrel to barrel until you emerge at the other side. At the other side, jump to the platform to the east, grabbing the "K" as you do so. Keep going after getting the "K" and you will come across another barrel-blasting area shortly. In that area, as always, line yourself up with each barrel before you shoot, to ensure you do not fall off.

After blasting from barrel to barrel and reaching the other side, break the Star Barrel and continue on through the level. When you come across a barrel with wires on it, throw it at the Kremling that jumps down from the ceiling to ambush you. After that, go into the launcher barrel that you come across, then use it to get into the barrel moving left and right above you. Use that barrel to blast yourself to the "O."

After getting the "O," keep going through the level, and when you come across a set of barrels above a cliff again, wait until you reach the last one (the one after the launcher barrel). In that one, line yourself up with the lone Banana to the east, just barely above the cliff, then shoot to be shot into a hidden bonus area. In there, you can get the "N," which, obviously, is the only reason I sent you into it.

Once you get the "N," keep going and you will eventually reach another set of barrels above a cliff. Blast from your way from barrel to barrel, being sure to line yourself up properly with the barrels so that you do not die. When you reach the other side, grab the barrel and roll it at the Kremlings that come down to attack you. After the Kremlings are dealt with, keep going through the level, blasting your way through the next two sets of barrels.

At the end of the second set, use the Necky as a springboard to get the "G." After getting the "G," keep going through the level, Roll Jumping to get the Expresso Token by the Zinger if you want, though be careful since you can fall off if you aren't careful, and it is probably isn't worth it to get it. When you reach the end of the level, go through the exit.

NOTE: After this level, you can visit Funky's Flights if you want to.

Bonus Stages

Spell it Out! At the very start, the Kongs encounter a Necky, who flies to the left at them. They must wait for Necky to fly near the Bonus Barrel to the upper-left of the start, and then jump on Necky to bounce up into it. In the Bonus Level, the Kongs must jump at four different barrels which repeatedly switch between each KONG Letter and a banana. From left to right, the Kongs must jump at each barrel to stop them and spell out "KONG." By doing so correctly, the Kongs are awarded with a Life Balloon. The Kongs exit from the Bonus Level after winning or losing the challenge.

Collect the Bananas! At the second abyss after the Continue Barrel, the Kongs must shoot out of the Barrel Cannon as it moves downward. By doing so, they are caught into a In the last barrel over this abyss, the Kongs should shoot out of the barrel as it moves downwards below the bridge. If timed right, the Kongs blast into the Bonus Barrel. In the Bonus Level, the Kongs must blast from a horizontally moving Barrel Cannon which repeatedly tilts. They can blast from the Barrel Cannon to collect many bananas in midair and the letter N at the top. Once they reach the top, the Kongs quickly descend. They can exit the Bonus Level by missing the Barrel Cannon as they fall.

K-O-N-G Letters
  • After crossing the first three abysses and first group of three Gnawties, the Kongs can collect the K between a small gap.
  • Near a Barrel Cannon found shortly after the first abyss from the Continue Barrel. The Kongs can shoot to the O from the barrel.
  • The N is high in the air inside of the second Bonus Level. The Kongs can shoot to it with the bonus's Barrel Cannon.
  • Near the end of the level, the Kongs can find an arrow sign pointing the nearby exit. The G is located just before it, and the Kongs can reach it by bouncing from a nearby tire or by shooting from a nearby Barrel Cannon on a Necky and jumping off it near the end.
Extra Life Balloons

Red Extra Life Balloon: the red balloon is gotten by jumping over the first Krash and making an early jump to the next track to land on the below one.

3. Forest Frenzy, Vine Valley

Donkey Kong Country Vine Valley - 3. Forest Frenzy Map.

At the beginning of the level, the Kongs are greeted by a jumping Kritter and a large abyss with a rope moving across it. They can use the rope to cross the pit and access a large piece of land holding two Kritters and a raised area of ground with a DK Barrel on it. Another abyss is ahead, with the letter K in it and a rope swinging above it. The platform on the other side of this pit holds a Kritter and is followed by a wider abyss that must be crossed by using two ropes that swing towards each other in the center of the pit. A Zinger with some bananas around it stand in the primates' way as they cross.

On the other side of the abyss, the heroes can find a low piece of land with two Kritters near it at a higher elevation. If the Kongs jump on the lower area from the rope they can break a part of the ground that contains a barrel. They can find another pit near here with a rope hovering over it. As the Kongs cross the pit, which can only be done with the use of the rope, they come past the letter O and then reach an area of land carrying two more Kritters and some bananas. A rope dangles above a wide abyss near here. Once they grab onto it, it begins to pull them past an area with many Zingers. The rope then leads them to a platform with the level's Star Barrel above it.

Another rope is next to this platform, and it can be used to send the heroes over a wide abyss containing a Zinger that moves in a vertical path around a V-shaped trail of bananas. A DK Barrel wobbles between the bananas. They can find another platform being dominated by a Kritter on the other side of the abyss. A larger abyss is ahead of here that leads the Kongs past a long line of Zingers that move back and forth in a vertical path. Two platforms can be found on the other side of this abyss, each with a Kritter on them. A Necky flies between the two platforms. If the heroes grab onto a rope that hangs over a large pit after here, it begins to pull them past a Zinger moving in a circular path, who moves above a V-shaped trail of bananas with the letter N between them.

After passing this Zinger, the rope stops near another rope that the Kongs must jump onto to be guided over the remaining part of the abyss. As they glide over the beginning of this area, they pass many Zingers flying in circular paths. One of these foes orbits a DK Barrel. Soon, they reach a pair of Zingers that move parallel to each other in a vertical path. The letter G hovers between them. Another Zinger ahead of here quickly orbits an Life Balloon. Once they pass this foe, they are lead into an area full of bananas. As they travel over the rest of the pit, many Neckys approach them, trying to run into the duo. Eventually, the two friends reach a large area of land with four small ledges on it. Kritters bounce on the edges of most of the ledges. On the fourth ledge, the heroes can find a sign indicating that the level is almost over. After climbing down three more ledges, the last two of which that hold Kritters, they reach an exit sign with an entryway ahead of it. If they enter the opening, they complete the level.

Walkthrough

Defeat the Kremling that attacks you, then continue on and jump from the rope to reach the platform to the other side. At that platform, grab the DK Barrel and break it if you need another kong. Either way, however, progress through the level until you reach the "K," at which point you should use a Roll Jump to get it. After getting the "K," keep going through the level, defeating all enemies you come across, and jumping across each rope you come across without dying.

Eventually, you will come to the "O" located by a Zinger enemy. Be careful that you do not get hit by the Zinger, and be sure to grab the "O" when you reach it, then after that, use the rope to jump to the other side. When you reach the other side, keep going and you will reach an area with a ton of Zingers enemies, and I do mean a ton. Be careful not to be defeated by them; in order to avoid death, you will have to work quickly, moving up and down on the rope depending on the Zinger's position.

After completing the Zinger segment, break the Star Barrel, then keep going through the level, jumping from rope to rope, avoiding the Zinger enemies you come across, as well as defeating any Kremlings you come across. After going through the level a bit, you will reach the "N," which you should get (watch out for the Zinger enemy, however). After getting the "N," you will soon reach the final segment of the level.

In this segment, you will have to avoid MANY Zinger enemies while on a rope. After that, you will have to avoid a ton of Necky enemies, while on a rope. The "G" is located in the Zinger segment, so try and get it without dying. It can be quite difficult not to die on this segment, however (I guarantee you will lose at least one kong during this whole segment, possibly both if you are an inexperienced player). Just be careful and hope you do okay.

'

After passing the final segment of the level, simply continue through the hilly area you come to, defeating all the Kremlings you come across. When you reach the exit sign, exit the level.

Bonus Stages

Stop the Barrel! While the Kongs ride on the last rope in the level, they encounter numerous Neckys flying at them. The Kongs must climb around them and drop into a Bonus Barrel, which is barely visible at the bottom of the screen. In the Bonus Barrel, the Kongs must observe a Rambi Token as it quickly moves between four midair barrels before stopping in one. If the Kongs jump at the correct barrel, they are rewarded the Rambi Token. After either winning or losing the Bonus Level, the Kongs return into the main level.

Collect the Bananas! Just after the first Bonus Level, the Kongs must jump off the last rope and jump onto a Kritter to land on an item cache, which releases a barrel. The Kongs must carry the barrel around some bouncing Kritters and avoid hitting them with it. At the exit sign, the Kongs must throw a barrel to a wall on the left to break it open and reveal an opening to the second Bonus Level. There, the Kongs must grab on a moving rope and collect numerous bananas. An Enguarde Token is on the right platform just before the exit. The Kongs can also fall into an abyss to return into the main level.

K-O-N-G Letters
  • After the first DK Barrel, the Kongs must roll jump in the second abyss of the level to reach the K.
  • The O is to the right of the second Zinger in the level.
  • After the Star Barrel, the Kongs must go across an abyss and dodge several Zingers. Then after passing a Necky and two bouncing Kritters, the Kongs encounter a Zinger moving in a circle over the N.
  • After the N, the Kongs must grab on another rope and pass four more circling Zingers. They then encounter a pair of circling Zingers, and the bottom one orbits the G.

4. Temple Tempest, Vine Valley

Donkey Kong Country Vine Valley - 4. Temple Tempest Map.

This stage is the final temple stage of Donkey Kong Country. This stage's main feature are the Millstone Gnawties that are quick and chase the Kongs until they are blocked by a wall. In total, there are fourteen Gnawties, six Millstone Gnawties, twelve Kritters, three Zingers, eleven Neckies found in a Bonus Room, and finally with a lone Klaptrap found in another bonus stage.

Overview

At the beginning of the level, the Kongs exit a tunnel and encounter a few Gnawties, who walk down several stair-like structures. A rope hangs over an abyss after here that the primates can swing along to grab the letter K and reach the other end of the obstacle, where a DK Barrel, a Gnawty, and a millstone are located. If they pass the millstone, it begins to chase them along the flat pathway. After crossing a small gap and climbing up a ledge, the heroes reach an area safe from the millstone, where they can find a wide abyss that they can cross by swinging on a nearby rope. They can find another millstone on the other side of the pit that chases them down a few small, stair-like structures when passed under.

They can find a wide abyss that they are able to cross with the aid of a rope after the stair-like structures. A ledge follows the pit, and once they climb to the top of it, they are safe from the millstone. A third millstone is located immediately after here, and it pursues the primates down more stair-like structures with Gnawties walking along them. After passing these foes, the Kongs reach an abyss that is wider than the previous pits. They must swing along two ropes located within it to cross. As they jump between the two ropes, they approach the letter O. Once the pit is crossed, the primates encounter more Gnawties marching up stair-like structures. A tall, raised piece of ground is ahead of here that the heroes can climb to the top of with a nearby rope. The level's Continue Barrel stands on top of the raised area.

After passing the special barrel, the Kongs reach a second DK Barrel and a few more small, stair-like structures that several Kritters hop along. At the top of the stairs, they can find a millstone inside of an alcove with a rope above it. With the help of the rope, the duo is able to jump over the millstone and progress to a small pit that they can cross with a rope. As they travel through this area, the millstone found in the abyss passes them. It continues to pursue the two friends as they head over two smaller alcoves, both containing Zingers. Once they jump over the gaps, they find another wide abyss with three ropes dangling above it.

The rope in the center of the pit is surrounded by many bananas that form the shape of an arrow pointing downwards. The primates can use the rope to cross the abyss and then progress towards a tire that can help them bounce onto a tall piece of ground. The millstone ceases to chase them when it runs into this raised area. A pathway with several small, stair-like structures along it is ahead, and many Kritters hop down these structures. The Kongs can pound on a piece of the ground in this area to reveal the letter N. Once they walk all the way across the stair-like structures, they find a small pit that they can cross with the help of a platform that supports a tire. Another tire is located ahead of here on a flat stretch of land. It can be used to reach a platform positioned above another millstone that begins to chase the heroes when they jump to the other side of it.

As it pursues them, the duo travels over a wide abyss that contains two small platforms, both carrying bouncy tires. On the other side of the abyss, the heroes can find a tire in the center of the area that they are able to use to reach a Banana Bunch placed high in the air. Farther ahead of the tire, a wide abyss can be found, and it holds two small platforms that both support a tire. A Zinger flies between them. Once the heroes cross the pit, they find a large, triangular alcove with another tire in it. Once the millstone reaches this alcove, it falls inside of it and remains there.

If the primates travel to the east from here, they find several stair-like structures and a sign that indicates that the level is near complete. A millstone is located in a small pit ahead of here. Once it is passed, it chases the heroes up more stair-like structures that are infested with Kritters. Using a rope, the primates can cross a wide abyss near here that the millstone falls into when it reaches it. An exit sign is located on the other end of the pit. If they enter the tunnel ahead of here, they complete the level.

Walkthrough

roll through the three Gnawties, then get on the rope and get the "K" before the rope passes it. After gettng the "K," get the DK Barrel if you need another kong. Either way though, advance through level, defeating all the Gnawty enemies you come across, swinging from rope to rope (just like Donkey Kong would do), and avoiding any and all Millstone Gnawties you come across along the way.

Thankfully, these Millstone Gnawties aren't nearly as annoying as they were in Millstone Mayhem in the second world. Anyway, eventually, you will reach the "O' letter, so grab it and continue onward through the level, defeating the Gnawties you come across (rolling is the best way), as well as grabbing the Star Barrel that you come across. After breaking the Star Barrel, continue through the level, defeating the Kremlings you come across, and using the DK Barrel if you need it.

Shortly after defeating the Kremlings, you will come across a Millstone Gnawty that will follow you until you pass the rope after the rope that has the Bananas pointing down in the shape of an arrow. After it quits following you and you are on ground again, bounce off the tire and continue your trek through the level, but be sure to use one of the Kremlings that comes at you for a high jump to get the "N" buried beneath the shadowed piece of ground, which I'm sure you notice is quite near.

After getting the "N," continue defeating the remaining five Kremlings you come across. After doing that, keep going through the level, since it is very straight-foward after this. Be sure to avoid each Millstone Gnawty, and other obstacles as well. When you reach the "G," which is found by climbing off the bottom of the rope when it reaches its easternmost point, right before the exit of the level. When you reach the exit, go through it to finish the level.

NOTE: After this level, you can visit Candy's Save Point if you want to.

Bonus Rooms

Find the Exit! After the K, the Kongs must pick up a DK Barrel and carry it by two Gnawties as a millstone Gnawty chases after them. The Kongs must jump over a gap and throw the DK Barrel into a wall to the right to make an opening into a Bonus Level. There, the Kongs must bounce across nine Neckys to cross a large gap to the right. If the Kongs jump on eight Neckys in a row, they earn an extra life. To the very right is a small platform with an Expresso Crate, a Life Balloon, and the exit.

Bash the Baddies! Shortly after the Continue Barrel, the Kongs must climb on three vertical ropes. The middle one has a group of bananas in the shape of a down arrow. The Kongs must follow the direction to drop down into a Bonus Barrel. In the Bonus Area, the Kongs must jump onto a Klaptrap ten times. The Klaptrap releases a Banana Bunch each time it is hit. When Klaptrap is first hit, the Banana Bunch represents one banana, but it increases by one more banana each time Klaptrap is hit. Once Klaptrap is defeated, the Kongs are rewarded a Rambi Token. They return to the main level after winning or losing the Bonus Level.

Animal Buddies

Expresso the Ostrich: At the first DK Barrel, one must avoid contact with the Gnawty and make their way over the gap and throw the barrel at the wall. A Bonus Room will reveal Expresso.

K-O-N-G Letters
  • The "K" is n the first rope, must climb low to get it.
  • The "O" is in between two ropes, a Millstone Gnawty will be chasing nearby.
  • The "N" is after the ropes with a banana-arrow pointing down, use the tire to get to the top of the platform and jump down on the weak spot in the ground.
  • The "G" is at the very end, climb on the rope and once it is set near the "EXIT" sign, climb it down.
Extra Life Balloons

Red Extra Life Balloon: In the first Bonus Room, at the end. Another is gained by simply jumping/cartwheeling eight Neckies straight in a row in the Bonus Room.

5. Orang-utan Gang, Vine Valley

Donkey Kong Country Vine Valley - 5. Orang-utan Gang Map.

Orang-utan Gang is the last jungle level in the game, and it involves Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong having to walk along the treetops. It is the first level with Manky Kongs, who stand on the treetops and throw barrels at Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong. Shortly before the Continue Barrel, the Kongs can jump on an animal crate to release Expresso the Ostrich and ride him for the rest of the level. There are five Bonus Levels in Orang-utan Gang, the most of any level in the Donkey Kong franchise, and Expresso is required to reach a Bonus Level hidden under the start of the level.

At the start of the level, if Donkey Kong and Diddy walk left, they can pick up a steel keg on a tree, circled by a Zinger. If they pick it up and throw it to the treetop on the left, the Kongs can jump on the rolling steel keg to ride through most of the beginning portion of the level.

In the original version, the level starts during the day and gradually transitions to sunset. In the Game Boy Color version, the entire level takes place during the daytime. In the Game Boy Advance version, the entire level takes place during a sunset.

Overview

The Kongs begin the level on a line of treetops. The sets of trees in the level are connected by vines that Kritters bounce along. Behind the start, they can find a Zinger circling a Steel Barrel. After another vine, there is a curved trail of bananas nearby that lead to a solid area of land with a DK Barrel and two Klaptraps on it. This area is followed by an abyss with more treetops connected by vines with Kritters hopping along them and a Zinger circling the K Letter in the middle. More treetops are ahead, and all of them have vines. The Kongs can then find a large piece of land that consists of many ledges that hold a few Klaptraps. A small platform between pits holds the letter O. They can also find a crate containing Expresso on the top of the area, which is followed by treetops with the level's Continue Barrel.

A second DK Barrel is found on another tree following an abyss. After passing some more treetops with Manky Kongs and a tree with another Steel Barrel, there is a small pit followed by two more trees that are connected to another pair of trees with a vine. After passing another Manky Kong, the Kongs can reach an area of land that consists of a few large ledges. After that, there is a that leads to a Klaptrap and the letter N. They can find an additional Klaptrap on a higher part of the large platform, which is immediately followed by a pair of trees that hold a DK Barrel. After that, there are more sets of trees, vines, enemies, and Manky Kongs.

The Kongs then reach another large area of land that features a large alcov with a barrel. The Kongs can also find a tall piece of land behind it that they can reach with Expresso. This area contains a Tire that can help the Kongs break two ground patches that release items. After passing through the rest of the area, they can find two pairs of trees that are connected by twisted vines. Once a Manky Kong is passed, there is a large area of land with a sign on it. A tunnel leading out of the level is located after the Kongs climb over a raised piece of land with a Kritter on it.

Walkthrough

Go left and take the Steel Keg Barrel, avoiding the Zinger as you do. After picking up the barrel, throw it to the tree it was standing on before you picked it up, then quickly jump on it. do not get off it when you get on it, but instead, let it ride you all the way to the "K." You will not have to worry about dying via a cliff or by enemies while you are riding on the Steel Keg Barrel.

When you reach the "K" guarded by the Zinger, hold Y to keep the Steel Keg Barrel, and as you hold Y, jump and grab the "K," making sure you jump to the other side as you do so. Once at the other side, roll the Steel Keg Barrel across the trees you are on, following it as you do; you should dispatch all four Kremlings by doing this. After defeating the four Kremlings, keep going and defeat the two Klaptraps you come across on the platform up ahead.

Then after that, preform a Roll Jump (a very low Roll Jump is necessary to do this successfully) to get the "O" on the low platform. After getting the "O," go and get Expresso; he's located at the highest platform in this area. Mount Expresso, then fly your way through the level, dismounting Expresso when enemies threaten. Shortly after flying, you come to the Star Barrel, so break that.

After flying for a bit, you will come to a platform with three Klaptraps, as well as the "N." defeat the Klaptraps (dismount Expresso first), then collect the "N" and continue on with the level. Eventually, you should come to a tire below the tree area you always use in this level (the tire is located just after the "N" basically, and is below the trees and on the ground). Go down into that area, being sure to pick up the barrel on the platform above the tire platform before going down.

Go all the way right, ignoring the low pit area you come to. Eventually, you will come to what seems to be a dead end to this solid ground area. There, break the wall with the barrel, then you will enter a bonus room. In that bonus room, jump up on the tire and use it to smash the soft spot of ground in the room to get the "G." After getting the "G," exit this bonus and continue your journey through this level.

you will come to the end of the level very shortly, just be sure to avoid all enemies you come across, or simply just defeating them would be the better method. When you reach the exit, go through it, as is always the case.

NOTE: After this level, you can visit Cranky's Cabin if you want to.

K-O-N-G Letters
  • Near the start, the K is over a small gap, circled by a Zinger, after some bouncing Kritters.
  • The O is on a small platform directly under the Expresso Crate. The Kongs must do a small jump to go across the small abyss, else they land on the ground above.
  • An area full of Klaptraps is located immediately before the second DK Barrel from the Continue Barrel. The N stands on the edge of a low cliff at the bottom of this area.
  • Inside the fourth bonus level, the Kongs must bounce from a floating, round tire to pound a weak spot in the ground, revealing it.
Bonus Stages

Spell it Out! After freeing Expresso from his animal crate, the Kongs and Expresso must backtrack to the first DK Barrel of the level. The Kongs can defeat the bouncing Kritters along the way so that Expresso does not hit into them and run away. From the first DK Barrel, Expresso must jump off the left edge and flap all the way down to the bottom-left area of the level; from there, the Kongs and Expresso can land on a hidden platform with an opening. By walking into the opening, the Kongs enter the first Bonus Level. In the Bonus Level, the Kongs must jump at orbiting letters to spell out the names of the four Animal Friends, in order of: Winky, Rambi, Enguarde, and Expresso. For each Animal Friend's name that the Kongs spell correctly, they are rewarded an animal token of that Animal Friend. After winning or losing, the Kongs exit back into the main level.

Collect the Prizes! To get in the second Bonus Level, the Kongs must have Expresso with them and then travel to the area with the letter N. Expresso must jump off the cliff and glide over an abyss to the right until he lands on a platform. From there, he must glide over another abyss and land on a platform with a barrel. The Kongs must dismount Expresso and use the barrel to break open a wall on the right, and then walk into the opening to access the Bonus Level. There, the Kongs must bounce on a floating round tire to land on three ground patches. From left to right, the items hid under the respective patches are: a DK Barrel, a Life Balloon, and a Banana Bunch. Donkey Kong and Diddy can exit through a small opening to the right.

Collect the Prizes! After the letter N, the Kongs must go across another set of treetops and pass two bouncing Kritters and two Manky Kongs. After this, they must continue by another two bouncing Kritters and then pick up a barrel. (They must avoid Manky's barrels hit the barrel or else they lose a chance to enter the Bonus Level) Once they pick up the barrel, Donkey Kong and Diddy must drop into a gap between the ground and treetop, move past a tire stuck in the ground, and go down another gap and hit the barrel against the left wall in the second gap. They must then walk into the opening to enter the Bonus Level.

There, Donkey Kong and Diddy must bounce on a tire and land on two distinguished patches on the ground to win either two Life Balloons or two Banana Bunches, one per ground patch. Once done, the Kongs can exit to the right. (In the original version, there is a glitch where if the Kongs bounce on the nearby tire, the opened cave closes back up.)

Collect the Prizes! The fourth Bonus Level is accessed similarly to the third one. The difference is that instead of dropping into the gap with the third Bonus Level, the Kongs must jump over the gap and run the barrel into a wall to the right. This creates an opening into the Bonus Level. The Bonus Level looks almost the same as the second and third ones except that there is only one patch on the ground (instead of three or two in the respective two previous Bonus Levels). The Kongs must bounce on the tire and land on the patch to collect the letter G. They can exit the area to the right.

Find the Exit! Near the third and fourth Bonus Levels is the final Manky Kong. To access the Bonus Level, the Kongs must jump over Manky Kong. They must wait for Manky Kong to throw a barrel, which rolls along the ground before eventually hitting a nearby wall to the left of an arrow sign pointing to the nearby exit. It creates an opening in the wall, which the Kongs must walk into to enter the stage's fifth and final Bonus Level. There, they must break an Expresso Crate and ride him over a wide abyss. There are four groups of bananas shaped like a right arrow that point in the direction that Expresso must glide. A platform with a Life Balloon is at the other end, along with the exit.

6. Clam City, Vine Valley

Clam City is the sixteenth level of Donkey Kong Country, and the sixth and final level of the Vine Valley area in the Super Nintendo Entertainment System version. In the Game Boy Advance version, it is instead the fifteenth level of the game and the fifth level of Vine Valley, due to Temple Tempest becoming the final level.

Clam City is the second underwater level, but unlike Coral Capers, it takes place in a sea rather than a lakebed. Clambos are the main enemy, and they spit out pearls at Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong. Some other enemies include Chomps, Chomps Jrs., Bitesizes, and Croctopuses are other enemies in the level. Clambos appear between all of these enemies. Enguarde can be freed from his animal crate in the level, by passing through a coral wall west of the first DK Barrel. Enguarde can help defeat many aquatic enemies along the way except for Croctopuses or Clambos. Like other underwater levels, Clam City does not have any Bonus Levels, and is the third level to not have any.

Layout

At the beginning of the level, the Kongs swim into an area that progressively becomes wider as they move forward. They can find a Clambo at the bottom corner of the area under a thin passage leading upwards. This passage takes them into another wide area, where the first DK Barrel in the level is located. Another passage leading to the south branches off of this area. As the heroes swim through it, they come past a Bitesize and a Clambo shooting pearls at them. A small channel under a coral wall is at the bottom of this passage.

An area full of Bitesizes is on the other side of the passage, containing a small alcove with the letter O in it. After traveling into a slightly smaller area at the end of here, the Kongs come up to a Clambo, who shoots two pearls at once. Another passage is to the north of it. The passage becomes wider after the primates swim slightly higher, giving them more space to avoid the pearls of the many Clambos found throughout it. At the top of the wide passage, they can find a DK Barrel in a small alcove and another thin channel with a large area full of Chomps Jr. enemies after it. A passage at the other side of this area includes an alcove with the level's Continue Barrel in it. A group of bananas forming into an arrow shape stand below the barrel.

The Kongs can find a wide pathway facing north ahead of here. A Clambo shoots pearls from the center of it. Another Clambo sits on a coral structure at the top of the area, shooting three pearls at once. Once the primates swim over it, they can find a pathway facing south, holding a lone Clambos in a small alcove. A smaller passage at the bottom of this area leads past a DK Barrel and into a wide passage leading to the north. As the Kongs progress through it, they come up to five Chomps enemies and then the letter N, located at the top of the area in a corner.

A tight channel leading into another open area is to the right of here with another Clambo in it. The enemy, who guards a Winky Token, shoots several pearls at once. If the duo manages to dodge the pearl projectiles, they can access a section full of many Croctopuses. At this point, they can find a sign that indicates that the level is almost complete. Once they pass the octopus-like foes, they move through another short channel and enter a square-shaped area containing a Clambo on a coral structure with the letter G under it. An exit sign stands on the opposite side of the enemies, pointing to the exit.

After going through the exit, the Kongs can fight Queen B. at Bumble B. Rumble. In the Game Boy Advance remake, finishing the level unlocks Cranky's Cabin, Candy's Dance Studio, and the level Temple Tempest.

Walkthrough

Swim east, grab the Banana Bunch by the Clambo, then quickly swim up, then hug the wall to the left when you get as high as you can go after going up. You should now be in an enclosed area with the "K," as well as Enguarde. After getting Enguarde, then east, then south, then finally east to a segment where you come across quite a number of Bitesize enemies swimming around, threatening to take you out.

Along the way to this Bitesize segment as I call it, you will have to avoid the Clambos' pearls, as well as avoid a Bitesiz enemy. Anyway, upon reaching the Bitesize segment, defeat all of the Bitesize enemies with Enguarde. After the enemies are cleared out, swim up and grab the "O" in the alcove there before continuing on. After getting the "O," you will come across a Clambo enemy, so swim north past him, then keep swimming all the way north, avoiding the pearls that the Clambos shoot at you.

When you reach the top, break the DK Barrel if you need it, but either way, continue going through the level (obviously), defeating all of the many Chomp Jr. enemies in the area, via Enguarde. After that, keep going and break the Star Barrel you come across. After that, keep going through the level, being sure to avoid the pearls that the upcoming Clambo enemies shoot at you. Once you pass the Clambos, you will see a DK Barrel; break it if you need it.

Now, continue on and you will reach an area that you have swim due north in. In that area, you will also find several Chomp enemies as you go up, so dispose of them with Enguarde, or swim around them if you do not have Enguarde. After you reach the top of the area, grab the "N," located in the northwest corner of the area against the wall. After getting the "N," you will come to a Clambo that shoots six pearls out at you, so be sure to avoid them.

After passing the Clambo, you come to an area with three Croctopus enemies, so be sure to be extremely careful in this area, since it's quite easy to die here. After passing the Croctopus enemies, you will be in an area with another Clambo enemy. As always, avoid the pearls (as Enguarde you can just swim above the Clambo) that he shoots at you. Be sure that before you pass the Clambo, get the "G."

K-O-N-G Letters
  • Left of the first DK Barrel, the Kongs can swim through the coral reefs to go in a hidden area with both the Enguarde Box and K.
  • Shortly after the first DK Barrel, the Kongs must swim through a wide area with some Bitesizes. The O is in a small alcove at the top of the area.
  • From the second DK Barrel, the Kongs must swim up a path with many Chomps. The N is at the top-left corner after the Chomps.
  • Right before the exit is a Clambo atop some coral reefs. The G is under the structure in a narrow passage.

7. Bumble B. Rumble, Vine Valley

Like other boss fights in the game, Bumble B. Rumble takes place in an arena filled with bananas. If the player enters with a single Kong, a DK Barrel is instantly broken so that both Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong enter the battle.

Queen B. begins by flying counterclockwise around the area. The Kongs get injured if they come in contact with Queen B. They can attack her by picking up a Vine Barrel generated either left or right of the arena's center (in the Game Boy Color release, a barrel only generates in the center of the arena). If Queen B. is hit by a barrel, she turns red and moves in a vertical wave from top to bottom, following the Kongs. While she is red, Queen B. is invulnerable, and the Kongs must avoid her until she turns back to yellow.

After reverting to normal, Queen B. continues moving around the arena. Depending on where Queen B. was on-screen and the which direction she faced, this may reverse her circumnavigation. For every hit that she takes, Queen B. moves around the arena faster. After being hit by five barrels, Queen B. is defeated and the Kongs recover a Giant Banana.

The battle is different in the Game Boy Advance remake. Queen B. always moves around in a wavy motion, regardless of being yellow or red, although she only follows after the Kongs while yellow. While Queen B. still turns red after being hit by a Vine Barrel, she also summons some Zingers to guard her at the right side of the arena. Instead of regenerating in a specific location, a Vine Barrel falls to a random place in the arena. The Kongs must defeat the Zingers around Queen B. so she turns back to yellow, allowing the Kongs to attack her. Also, right after hitting Queen B., Donkey Kong can quickly defeat the Zingers before they spread around Queen B. by holding up a Vine Barrel under her.
